Head Coach (1st year) Alma Mater: Willamette University (1996) Office Phone: 503-370-6132 Email: alapray@willamette.edu Anne (McShane) Lapray is the head women’s basketball coach at Willamette University. She has previously served as an assistant coach at WU from 1997-1999 and from 2005-2009. “Anne has exceptional energy and brings a tremendous commitment to everything she does,” Majeski said. “She is looking forward to the continued development of the Willamette women’s basketball program.” Lapray was a starting forward on the WU women’s basketball team that qualified for the 1995-96 NAIA Division II National Tournament. In high school, she was the 1989-90 Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of Oregon for her efforts at Oregon City High School.
Lapray played basketball at Oregon State University until a knee injury sent her to the sidelines. Later, she played at Portland State, where a second knee injury almost ended her career. At Willamette, she was selected Honorable Mention All-NWC as a senior. She received her degree in Sociology from WU in 1996. Lapray and her husband, John, live in South Salem. They are the parents of three daughters, Janie, Maggie and Mary, and a son, Jack. Lapray is focused on changing the culture of Willamette women’s basketball and is committed to providing student-athletes with a complete college experience.

Sara Brooks begins her third year as part of the Bearcat coaching staff. Brooks played point guard for Willamette University for two seasons. During her two years with the Bearcats, she played in 41 games (41 starts). She scored a total of 225 points, while grabbing 150 rebounds and dishing out 133 assists. She transferred to Willamette following two seasons at Chemeketa CC. She earned AllConference and All-Academic recognition while playing for the Storm. Brooks was a starting guard her freshman year when the Storm finished second place in the NWAACC with a 22-8 record and averaged 14 ppg her sophomore year. At Willamette, she earned a B.A. in History in 2007. Following WU, she earned her Masters in Sports Administration and Leadership from Seattle University. She currently works as the Assistant Communications Director for the Bearcats. She makes her home in Salem with her fiance Joey and their dog Maci.
Kevin Eakin is an assistant coach for the Willamette University women’s basketball team. This is his first season on the Bearcat coaching staff in 2009-10. He has previously coached at the high school and youth level with his most recent stint being with the Lincoln Youth Basketball (Portland, OR) working with both the boys and girls program. He has also been a clinician at numerous summer camps and specializes in individual skill development. Outside of Willamette, Coach Eakin is a co-owner of Camp Cascade and Cascade Sports Camp which is located 45 miles east of Salem. He is also involved in several commercial and residential real estate projects in the Willamette Valley. Eakin is a 1982 graduate from Oregon State University. He earned his degree in Business Administration. He lives in NW Portland with his wife, Renae and two children, Adam and Abby.

Dr. M. Lee Pelton
President
Dr. M. Lee Pelton was appointed the 22nd president of Willamette University in July, 1999. Under Pelton’s leadership, the University has increased its academic profile, successfully employing strategies to attract the best faculty and the brightest students from the state, the nation and the world. Since 2001, Willamette University has been ranked a top tier liberal arts college by U.S. News and World Report. President Pelton holds a doctorate from Harvard University and an undergraduate degree in English and Psychology from Wichita State University, where he graduated magna cum laude in 1974. His area of academic focus is 19th century British prose and poetry. He served as dean of the college at Colgate University (1988-91) and Dartmouth College (1991-98). At Harvard, he taught in the English Department and was the dean of one of Harvard’s 13 undergraduate colleges. He teaches at Willamette in subjects ranging from 1st century Athens to post-apartheid South Africa.
Mark Majeski
Director of Athletics
Mark Majeski began his tenure with Willamette University in October of 2000, following five years as athletic director at the University of California, Santa Cruz and four years as assistant athletic director at Menlo College. He currently serves as a member of the NCAA Division III membership committee, which provides oversight of the Division III provisional member program. Majeski previously served on the NCAA Division III men’s tennis committee, overseeing championships in that sport. A former basketball, track and softball coach, Majeski also worked venue management and operations for the 1994 FIFA Men’s Soccer World Cup and the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. At WU, Majeski oversees 20 varsity teams, with the Bearcats competing in NCAA Division III, the Northwest Conference and the Intercollegiate Rowing Association. He is also the basketball liaison between the NWC coaches and athletic directors. Majeski received an undergraduate degree in journalism from Menlo College and a master’s degree in Higher Education Administration from San Jose State University. He lives in Salem with his wife, Denise, and their son, Jack Henry, age 5.

WU Athletic Facilities
Cone Field House is the home court for the Willamette women’s basketball, men’s basketball and volleyball teams. The arena holds 2,500 fans, with plenty of seating on each side of the court. There is a quality sound system, plus tables for official timers, scorekeepers and statisticians, along with space for broadcast media. The WU court is connected to the Lestle J. Sparks Center, which houses offices for the Department of Athletics and the Department of Exercise Science. The building has a pool, handball and racquetball courts, a weight lifting and fitness center, classrooms, and locker rooms. The Women’s Basketball Team Room is located in the basement of Sparks Center, close to the training room. The team room has showers, a stereo system, and individual lockers for all of the players. Conveniently located between the women’s team room and the gymnasium is the Burr Treatment Center. This facility is staffed by 3 full time athletic trainers who evaluate and rehabilitate althetes. Willamette University soccer teams play home games at Sparks Field, an artificial turf facility next to the Sparks Center. The field is equipped with lights for night games and is one of the best college fields in the Pacific Northwest.
Each team member receives shoes and WU practice gear.
To the west of the Sparks Center are six outdoor tennis courts. To the east is the softball complex. Facilities for football, baseball, cross country, and track and field are located two blocks south of campus, near Bush’s Pasture Park. Recent upgrades include new lighting, a state-of-the-art scoreboard and a FieldTurf™ playing surface. The remaining two sports sites, beyond walking distance from the campus, are for golf and rowing.

University employs three full time trainers and several work study students. The sports medicine team provides evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation to student-athletes. Burr Treatment Center, located in the basement of the Sparks Center, is open Mon.-Fri. and for events on the weekends.
Dr. Thorsett graduated from Washington University Medical School in June 1991. He completed his residency at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in June 1996. Currently he is affiliated with Silverton Hospital, where he specializes in sports medicine and adult reconstructive surgery of the hip, knee and shoulder. Dr. Thorsett enjoys running, fly-fishing, backpacking and bicycling. He lives in Salem with his wife, Sarah, and their three children. Full Access Sports Mike initiated radio coverage of Bearcat men’s basketball games in 1991 and football in 1994. The “Voice of the Bearcats,” he’s also been calling women’s and men’s games since 2000. He began his sportscasting career while at Central Washington University (1980-83) and has since called hundreds of high school and college ball games. He’s been honored for his work by the Associated Press and Salem Sports & Breakfast Club. Mike works for the Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs as a public affairs specialist. Major Allegre retired from the Oregon Air National Guard in Jan. 2007 after serving 21 years. Between them, he and wife Suzanne have five children and one grandson. Conference and National Affiliations NCAA Division III Willamette is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and competes in Division III, which has over 425 members and is the largest NCAA division. The colleges in Division III place a priority on the overall quality of the educational experience and on successful completion of each student’s academic programs. They seek an environment in which a student-athlete’s activities with an athletic team are seen as an integral part of his or her educational experience. Members in Division III must sponsor at least five men’s sports and five women’s sports.
Athletes in Division III do not receive financial aid related to athletic ability. Willamette and other NCAA Division III members encourage students to participate by maximizing the variety of athletic opportunities. Primary emphasis is placed on conference and regional play. Willamette often sends its teams to California, Idaho, Washington and Texas for in-region games. NCAA Division III members establish an environment with cultural diversity and gender equity among student-athletes and staff. In Division III, employees care about the well-being of their student-athletes.
Northwest Conference The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation for the NWC as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 83 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound, plus Whitman and Whitworth. The charter members in 1926 included Willamette, College of Idaho (Albertson College), Linfield, Pacific, and the College of Puget Sound (UPS). Albany College was added in 1931 and remained for seven
years, then departed and returned in 1949 as Lewis and Clark College. The next member, Pacific Lutheran, joined in 1965, followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew in 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984, but returned in 1988. Menlo College joined the NWC in 2006 in football only. The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.

Bearcat Basketball Alumni Molly Fillion (‘09) clawed her way into the WU record book eleven times. Fillion was a Bearcat for two seasons, from 2006-08.
Fillion Named First Team All-West Region Willamette University women’s basketball player Molly Fillion was named First Team AllWest Region by D3Hoops.com. The All-West Region squad was selected in voting by Sports Information Directors throughout the Region. Fillion was the leading scorer and rebounder in the Northwest Conference this season. She averaged 14.0 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. She recorded 11 doubledoubles during the season to give her 18 in her two years with the Bearcats. During her two seasons at Willamette, Fillion started all 47 games. She scored 637 points for 13.6 points per game. She also contributed 466 rebounds for an average of 9.9 boards per contest.
Fillion was named First Team All-Northwest Conference in 2008-09. She was an Honorable Mention All-NWC selection in 2007-08. Filion has her name in the WU record books eleven times, including the top three spots for rebounds in a single game. Her 9.92 career rebounding average broke the record by more than one rebound per game. She graduated with a degree in Psychology in May 2009.
The 1985-86 Women’s Basketball Team
In conjunction with the Hall of Fame weekend, current WU players sat down with the 1985-86 team to eat pizza and talk basketball. The 1985-86 team was inducted into the Willamette Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2009. The 1985-86 team went 20-7 overall and won the WCIC with a 10-0 record. The next team to go undefeated in the conference was George Fox at 16-0 in 2007-08. The Bearcats also went 14-6 against NAIA District 2 teams. WU lost in the first Page 20
round of the NAIA District 2 Tournament to Northwest Nazarene, 75-64. First Team All-Conference selections for Willamette and Head Coach Cheryl K. Brown in 1985-86 were Christine Suess and Natalie Marth. Willamette achieved a +9.5 rebound margin and limited opponents to 39.0% shooting. The Bearcats were 11-2 at home and 9-5 on the road. WU had a 13 game winning streak during the season. Willamette will be inviting alumni to several games during the 2009-10 season.
