2009 Season Outlook The 2009 Bearcats return 13 players from last year’s team that finished the season with a 12-8-0 record. WU was 10-6-0 in the Northwest Conference and finished in third place. 2008 was the first season for head coach Hillary Arthur. Arthur adds eight freshmen to a roster already full of talented players. Leading the way for the Bearcats is the top scorer from a year ago, Alex Batzer (Jr.). Batzer was named Honorable Mention All-NWC after scoring six goals as a sophomore. Another key to success for the Bearcats is goalkeeper Kelli Gano (Jr.). Gano allowed 27 goals in 1801:30 for a 1.35 GAA during the 2008 season. She recorded seven shutouts. A pair of midfielders, Kimber Mattox (So.) and Stephanie Skelly (So.), will provide scoring experience for the Bearcats. Mattox accumulated three goals and one assist last season while Skelly earned two goals and two assists. Three Bearcats, Beth Tatlock (Sr.), Haley Rosenthal (Sr.) and Rachel Janny (Sr.), each scored one goal apiece last season and will continue to add excitement to Willamette’s attack. The Bearcats return five defenders from last year’s squad that gave up just 27 goals during the season. Emily Wigington (Jr.) and Fran Clawson (Jr.) started in 17 games each for the Bearcats last season.

Senior Beth Tatlock recorded one goal and three assists for WU during the 2008 season.

Page 2

Alex Batzer is ready to head the ball for WU. Batzer had a team high six goals in ‘08.

Other returning defenders are Megan Moore (So.), Stazzy Groleau (Sr.) and Laurel Burke (So.). Catherine Stockdale (So.) will add depth at the midfield for WU and Jill Schneeman (So.) will do the same as a keeper. This year’s freshmen class will be exciting to watch as all eight individuals bring unique, dynamic skills to the already high level of play of the Bearcat program. Helping to strengthen a high caliber offense will be midfielders Andi Rowan (Fr.), Tannin Kueffner (Fr.), and Ariel Wilson (Fr.). These three will bring speed and quickness to the Bearcats’ attacking front. Maddy Grainger (Fr.) and Irene Vazquez (Fr.) will also add to the offense at the forward position. They are expected to provide high intensity play, amazing touches and strong shots. Adding depth to the defense will be freshmen Shannon Scott, Allie Mack and Elena Johansen. These freshmen bring high caliber play, a good understanding of the Bearcats’ system and knowledge of their positions. The Bearcats open the season against Northwest Christian University on Sept. 1. WU also will face Western Oregon University, University of Redlands, and Chapman University before opening conference play on Sept. 16 against Linfield College. The Northwest Conference Coaches Preseason Poll picked Willamette to finish in fourth place. The University of Puget Sound was the early favorite for the conference title.

Willamette Athletic Facilities Sparks Field

Sparks Center

The Willamette University soccer teams play their home games at Sparks Field, an artificial turf facility on the WU campus. Sparks Field is equipped with lights for night games and seats 500 spectators. The facility, renovated with a FieldTurf surface a few seasons ago, is one of the top small college fields in the Northwest. In addition to lights and bleachers, Sparks Field includes seating for both teams and has a public address system. Sparks Field is located next to the Lestle J. Sparks Center, which houses offices for the Department of Athletics and the Department of Exercise Science. The building has basketball, handball and racquetball courts, a weight lifting and fitness center, classrooms and locker rooms. Cone Field House, where the WU men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams play, is part of the Sparks Center and seats 2,500 fans. Also connected to the Sparks Center is the WU natatorium, home of Bearcat swimming. The natatorium, with space for 200 fans, also can be seen from a viewing area in the lobby. Close to the Sparks Center and Sparks Field are six outdoor tennis courts. The men’s and women’s tennis teams host meets at the WU Tennis Courts each year. Willamette’s football team plays home games at McCulloch Stadium, located two blocks from campus. The stadium seats 2,400 fans and has

lights for night games. It also features a new scoreboard with a video display screen. There is an athletic training room, along with spacious locker rooms and meeting rooms. McCulloch Stadium creates the atmosphere of an old stadium, but provides many modern conveniences. It has a FieldTurf surface. The Charles Bowles Track, located inside McCulloch Stadium, is an all-weather facility that showcases Willamette’s track and field and cross country teams, which host meets each year. This year, Willamette will host the NCAA West Region cross country meets. Located near McCulloch Stadium is Roy S. “Spec” Keene Stadium at John Lewis Field, the home of Bearcat baseball. The stadium features chairback seating in part of the grandstand and an overall capacity of 1,000. The entire football, track, cross country and baseball complex is at Bush’s Pasture Park. The park hosts cross country meets on its wide paths and is known for its art exhibits and rose garden. On the east side of campus is the Willamette Softball Complex. It includes covered dugouts, batting cages, a scoreboard and bleachers. The men’s and women’s golf teams practice at Illahe Hills Country Club and Creekside Golf Club. Athletes on the men’s and women’s rowing teams have their own boathouse and work out on the Willamette River in downtown Salem.

Conference and National Affiliations NCAA Division III

Willamette is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and competes in Division III, which has over 425 members and is the largest NCAA division. The colleges in Division III place a priority on the overall quality of the educational experience and on successful completion of each student’s academic programs. They seek an environment in which a student-athlete’s activities with an athletic team are seen as an integral part of his or her educational experience. Members in Division III must sponsor at least five men’s sports and five women’s sports.

Athletes in Division III do not receive financial aid related to athletic ability. Willamette and other NCAA Division III members encourage students to participate by maximizing the variety of athletic opportunities. Primary emphasis is placed on conference and regional play. Willamette often sends its teams to California, Idaho, Washington and Texas for in-region games. NCAA Division III members establish an environment with cultural diversity and gender equity among student-athletes and staff. In Division III, faculty and staff care about the well-being of student-athletes.

Northwest Conference The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation for the NWC as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 83 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College.

Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only. The NWC offers championships in 18 sports (nine men’s and nine women’s). The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.

Some of the most rewarding moments happen on the sidelines. Whether it’s a crowd of hundreds doing “The Wave” or a couple of parents holding a sign, this is the part of any game that hits home for us — people supporting people. In fact, it’s exactly why at American Family, we’re happy and proud to join the cheering section.
