John Lewis Field at Roy S. “Spec” Keene Stadium

The Bearcats play home games on John Lewis Field at Roy S. “Spec” Keene Stadium. The stadium has an overall capacity of 1,000 fans with chairback seating available behind home plate. The field is natural grass and stays green nearly all year-round. In 2009, Willamette University laser-leveled the infield surface, allowing the Bearcats to play all of their scheduled home games. It is one of the top infields in the region. Willamette is the only team in the Pacific Northwest outside of NCAA Division I that has a clubhouse at its field. The Bearcats’ clubhouse, which is located below the stadium, features two satellite televisions and can be reached from the Willamette dugout.

Willamette Head Coach Aaron Swick

Head Coach (3rd year) Alma Mater: University of California (2005) Aaron Swick is in his third season as the head coach of the Willamette baseball team. He has led the Bearcats to an overall record of 37-39 (.487), including 21-17 in 2009. Willamette has registered back-to-back fourth place finishes in the highly-competitive Northwest Conference. Swick’s teams have finished the season strong. In 2009, the Bearcats were 16-6 in the final 22 games. In 2010, WU was 7-4 in its last 11 contests. Swick, who served as Willamette’s pitching coach and baseball recruiting coordinator in 2006 and 2007, became head coach in September of 2008. He has coached two All-Americans. Kyle Stalker was Third Team All-America at first base twice (AFCA ‘08, D3baseball. com in ‘09) and belted 53 home runs in his career. This year, Mitchell Rowan is a Preseason All-America pick at DH after batting .403 with 12 homers in 2010. He was named First Team All-Region. Swick has improved John Lewis Field. A new warning track was installed and the

infield was laser-leveled in 2009. Players benefit from an updated clubhouse and new benches in the dugouts. In addition, there is a workout room for pitchers, a new windscreen, a catcher’s area in the bullpens and an updated hitting facility. Prior to returning to Willamette, Swick was an assistant coach with the Green Bay Bullfrogs of the Northwoods League in the summers of 2007 and 2008. Also in 2007-08, Swick was the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at South Dakota State University. In addition to his coaching duties, Swick received a master’s degree in Sports Pedagogy from SDSU. In 2006, Swick was interim head coach for the Wilson Tobs (Coastal Plain League). In five years with collegiate and summer league teams, he has coached 25 players who advanced to professional baseball. Swick pitched at Saddleback College and the University of California-Berkeley. At Saddleback, he was All-Conference once and reached regionals twice. At Cal, he had a 1.86 ERA as a senior. He earned a B.S. degree in Political Science in 2005.

James Shier

Assistant Coach 4th year (Hitting)

Assistant Coach 2nd year (Pitchers)

Mike Doran is in his fourth year as the WU hitting coach. He has had significant coaching experience, with nine seasons as the head coach at South Salem High School, plus six years as an assistant coach at Sprague High School. He has coached in American Legion ball since 1994 and is an assistant coach for the Withnell Dodgers. Doran played baseball at Lewis-Clark State College (Idaho) and graduated with a B.A. degree in Social Studies and Russian Language in 1967. He lives in Salem with his wife, Lana. They are parents of three adult children: Timberlee, Maren and John.

Bert Hunter Assistant Coach 2nd year (Outfield)

Bert Hunter is in his 2nd year at Willamette. He will be responsible for coaching third base during games and will work with the teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s outfielders during practice. Hunter has an impressive background as a professional coach. He managed for six years in the Arizona League for the San Francisco Giants (2001-07). His club won four titles and he was named Manager of the Year in 2004. He was the hitting coach for Jackson (Miss.) in 1997, Salem-Keizer (Ore.) in 1998-00, Hagerstown (Pa.) in 2001 and in the Arizona League in 2008. Hunter was selected by the Houston Astros in the 2nd round of the 1985 draft. He played outfield and first base in a 9-year professional career from 1985-93. He lives in Keizer with his wife and two daughters.

James Shier begins his 2nd season with the Bearcats. He previously coached baseball and football at nearby Blanchet Catholic School for two years. The baseball team qualified for the OSAA State Playoffs both seasons. Shier also coaches and plays for a summer team in the Willamette Valley. Shier was a two-time All League pitcher and outfielder at Sequim High School in Sequim, Wash. He also played at Olympic College in Bremerton, Wash., where he was a team captain his sophomore season. A resident of nearby Keizer, Ore., Shier owns and operates a successful wireless communications company with locations in Washington and Oregon.

Ricky Walker Assistant Coach 1st year (Infield)

Ricky Walker is in his 1st season at WU, after four years as an assistant at Colorado Christian University, where he helped with recruiting, hitting, catching and strength/conditioning. He will coach infielders at Willamette Walker helped CCU claim back-to-back National Christian (NCCAA) regional titles. The team appeared in the NCCAA World Series three times and placed third in 2009. During the past five years, Walker was head coach of the Walker Transmission Baseball Club, a collegiate summer team in Denver, Colo., that he led to postseason play four times. In addition, he coached in the NBC World Series as an assistant with the Denver Bombers. Page 3

Season Outlook 2011 The 2011 Willamette University baseball team has returning players at seven of eight field positions, along with the designated hitter and all three primary starting pitchers. As a result, Head Coach Aaron Swick and the Bearcats are excited about the start of the season. In fact, the Bearcats graduated only one senior at the end of the 2010 season. Nearly everyone else on the team has returned. Willamette ended last year with a 16-22 overall record, including 12-12 in the Northwest Conference, as the Bearcats tied for fourth place. WU went 8-4 in its final 12 NWC games. Last year, Willamette frequently started four or five freshmen. As the season progressed, the freshmen adapted well to the college game and made major contributions to the team. Now, they have a full year of experience behind them and are ready to be even more valuable in 2011. “We have great depth and athleticism at every position,” Swick said. “Pitching has improved significantly. I think we have an opportunity to do great things.”

Infield Doug Bloom, a senior who is a former First Team All-NWC selection, will start at shortstop. All of the other infield positions are very competitive. Bloom hit .250 and scored 33 runs last season. He also was successful on 15 of 17 stolen base attempts and led the team with 125 assists. Bloom owns a .290 career batting average and has scored 108 runs in 116 games for the Bearcats. “Doug has been an ironman for us at shortstop,” Swick noted. “He has incredible abilities in the field and at the plate and does a great job of leading our team while on defense." Returnees Galen Duff (So., 2B), Tim Schilf (Jr., 3B) and Michael Oliver (Jr., 1B) have experience, but will be challenged by several newcomers. Freshmen Tommy Kawamura at Doug Bloom second base and Brandon Chinn and (Sr., SS) Scott Arn at first base are talented infielders who will battle for playing time. Tosh Semlacher (Fr.) is a key newcomer who will compete for playing time at third base In 2010, Schilf played in 28 games, while Duff saw action in 27 games and Oliver contributed during 24 games. Oliver batted .288 during the season. Duff achieved a 1.000 field percentage with 31 putouts and 55 assists. Schilf started 20 games and was 6 for 7 on stolen bases. Providing depth on the infield will be returning player Kyle Kirwan (So., 1B) and newcomers Tenny Pitsch (Fr., 1B), Kevin Lyman (Fr., 3B) and Alex Lavery (Fr., 3B).

Outfield The Willamette outfield features plenty of talent and depth. All three starters return, along with quality back-up players. Page 16

Season Outlook 2011 Providing the most experience is senior left fielder T.C. Lee, who has played in 111 games, with 107 starts in his T.C. Lee career. Lee was named First Team All-NWC in 2010 after (Sr., LF) hitting .389 with 15 doubles, one triple and three home runs. He tied for the team lead with 22 walks and was 11 of 15 on stolen bases. Lee has an impressive career batting average of .351 and hit at least .320 in each of the past three seasons. His career statistics also include 87 runs, 87 RBIs and 30 doubles. He ranks second all-time at WU with 22 home runs. “T.C. is a legitimate threat every time he steps in the box and has been a huge part of our offensive success the last two years,” Swick commented. Mitchell Rowan, who started at designated hitter and saw action in right field in 2010, was chosen First Team All-NWC. He also was selected First Team All-West Region by D3baseball.com and was a First Team Preseason AllAmerica pick prior to the current season. “Mitch has been extremely impressive in his first two years,” Swick said. “Every time he goes up to the plate we know he is going to give us a quality at bat.” Last year, Rowan led the Bearcats with a .403 batting average. He was 13 for 13 on stolen bases, belted 13 doubles and blasted 12 home runs. He led WU with 412 RBIs and 41 runs scored. Tyson Giza in center field and Sky Kelley in right field were named Honorable Mention AllNWC as freshmen last year. Giza achieved a .288 batting average, while stealing 14 bases. He played in 37 games and recorded 115 putouts on defense. Kelly saw action in 31 games and batted .374, with 29 runs and 24 RBIs. He earned a 1.000 fielding percentage. Eli Kass (So.) started at second base last season to gain lots of experience. He has moved to the outfield this season. Adam Reid, a junior, will provide depth.

Catching Max Stepan, a senior this season, was named Second Team All-NWC in 2010. He played in 33 games with 29 starts, and batted .345 for the Bearcats. He belted five home runs and 12 doubles, while driving in 29 runs and scoring 27 times. He also achieved a .959 fielding percentage. “Max gives us great energy and attitude behind the plate. He has learned how to handle our staff and will also be a key part of what we do offensively,” Swick said. Max Stepan Dylan Summers, now a junior, played in 21 games and (Sr., C) had 15 starts in 2010. While platooning with Stepan, he hit .281. He earned a .988 fielding percentage behind the plate. Stepan and Summers have both improved their skills and are ready to work with the pitching staff. Depth at catcher will be supplied by senior Ross Knutsen.

Season Outlook 2011 Pitching

Devin Grindy

Chris Torgerson (Sr., RHP) and Devin Grindy (Sr., RHP) (Sr., RHP) return for Willamette after being the team’s top two starters last season. They combined for a total of 33 appearances, including 21 starts. Torgerson led the team in wins and finished with a 6-4 record. One of his wins was a 7-0 complete-game shutout of conference power Pacific Lutheran University. He completed the year with a 6.52 earned run average in 58 innings pitched. Torgerson was chosen Honorable Mention All-NWC. Grindy topped the pitching staff with 64 innings on the mound. He achieved a 6.61 ERA and a 3-4 overall record, while striking out 27 batters with only 14 walks. “Both of these guys (Torgerson and Grindy) are gamers. They love to compete,” Swick said. “Their experience will definitely play a big part in our staff having success this season.” The third regular starter will be one of several talented pitchers for the Bearcats. Jake Jones (So., RHP) returns after pitching 11 times with eight starts as a freshman last spring. He threw a total of 35 innings and ranked second on the team with 21 strikeouts. Also competing for a starting spot are two transfers and two returning players who worked from the bullpen in 2010. The transfers are sophomore Jamie McCaffrey and junior Ryan Smith. McCaffrey played one year at Clackamas CC. Smith competed for two years at Redlands (Calif.). The relievers who may earn a spot in the starting rotation are Brandon Simon (So., RHP) and Blake Paisley (Jr., RHP). Simon pitched his way to a 3-0 record and a solid 4.61 ERA. He allowed just one homer in 27 1/3 innings pitched. Paisley pitched in 12 games for the Bearcats a year ago. He struck out nine batters in 16 2/3 innings. Parker Johnson (So., RHP) returns as a leader in the bullpen. During his freshman season last spring, he tied Simon for the team lead with 15 appearances and earned two saves. Additional bullpen help will be provided by a mixture of returning and new players. Experienced pitchers include Andrew Wyman (Sr., RHP) and Nate Bender (Sr., RHP). Newcomers are Garrett Davis (Fr., RHP), Matthew Shea (Fr., RHP), Nathan Shea (Fr., RHP) and Henry Harrison (Fr., LHP).

Schedule Willamette will play a challenging schedule. The Bearcats are set to open the year with a four-game series against Simpson in Redding, Calif. One week later, WU will play several games in the Los Angeles area, taking on Chapman, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Pomona-Pitzer and Occidental. The schedule includes a round-robin of 24 games in the Northwest Conference. Willamette will play a three-game series against NWC team. Linfield College, which placed third in NCAA Division III in 2010, is the preseason favorite.. Willamette was picked fourth in the NWC Preseason Poll.

NWC and NCAA Division III

The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 84 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College. Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew in 1978. Whitworth left out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only and withdrew in 2009. The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted from the NAIA to the NCAA.

Willamette is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and competes in Division III, which has 447 members and is the largest NCAA division. Division III is about following your passions and discovering your potential. The college experience is a time of learning and growth. For student-athletes in Division III, this happens in the classroom, through athletics and, ultimately, by completing an academic degree. The Division III experience provides student-athletes with the opportunity to participate in a competitive athletic environment. Student-athletes can push themselves to excellence. At WU, studentathletes are encouraged to pursue their full passions and find their potential through a comprehensive educational experience. Athletes in Division III do not receive financial aid related to athletic ability. Willamette and other NCAA Division III members encourage students to participate by maximizing the variety of athletic opportunities. An emphasis is placed on conference and regional play. Willamette often sends its teams to California, Idaho, Washington and Texas for in-region games. NCAA Division III members establish an environment with cultural diversity and gender equity among student-athletes and staff. In Division III, faculty and staff focus on the well-being of student-athletes and their overall academic and athletic success.

2010 Season Review The 2010 Willamette baseball team, with just one senior on its roster, achieved an 8-4 record in the second half of Northwest Conference play to finish 12-12 in the NWC, tied for fourth place. The Bearcats hit 35 home runs and stole 80 bases. Willamette was 16-22 overall. Mitchell Rowan (So., DH) led the Bearcats with a .403 batting average and 12 home runs. He was chosen First Team All-West Region by the ABCA. He ranked first on the WU roster with 62 hits, 41 runs and 42 RBIs. Rowan was one of two Bearcats to start all 38 games. He ranked 31st in NCAA Division III in home runs per game (0.32). He was selected First Team All-NWC. T.C. Lee (Jr., LF) also achieved First Team All-NWC honors. Lee batted .389 for the year and tied for the team lead with 15 doubles. He earned 51 hits to go with 32 runs and 26 RBIs. Second Team All-NWC recognition went to catcher Max Stepan (Jr.), who hit .345 with 15 doubles and five homers. He ranked third on the team with 29 RBIs. Three Bearcats earned Honorable Mention All-NWC status. They were Sky Kelley (Fr., RF), Tyson Giza (Fr., CF) and Chris Togerson (Sr., P). Kelley provided a .374 batting average to go with 29 runs and 24 RBIs. He had 73 putouts and two assists with a 1.000 fielding percentage. on the team with 14 stolen bases. He scored 30 runs and earned 115 putouts in the outfield. Torgerson topped the WU pitching staff as he earned a 6-4 record. He achievd a 6.52 ERA. Torgerson pitched 58.0 innings. WUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s offensive success was reflected on the Bearcatsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; all-time single season and career lists. Several members of the team earned Top 10 rankings for their efforts (see pages 25-28). The Bearcats also achieved Top 10 rankings in 11 single season team categories. Willamette ranked second with 85 doubles, finished third with 80 successful stolen base attempts and was fourth with 1,346 at bats. Willamette ended the year ranked fifth with 35 home runs, was sixth with 402 hits, placed seventh with 271 runs and was seventh with 242 RBIs. On defense, the Bearcats were fourth in putouts (986) and tied for fifth place in fielding percentage (.554). WU had 419 assists, good for sixth place and the WU pitching staff was listed seventh with 328 2/3 innings pitched. Torgerson earned a complete-game five-hit shutout in a 7-0 win over Pacific Lutheran. The Bearcats claimed a 7-2 victory over George Fox, plus two NWC wins each against: Whitworth, Pacific, Whitman, Puget Sound, Lewis & Clark.

Willamette University

Willamette University is a top-ranked private liberal arts university located directly across the street from Oregon’s Capitol. It is home to 1,801 undergraduates and 805 graduate students in law, management and education. The campus is centered around the Mill Stream and is home to numerous ancient trees and open green spaces. The beauty of the Pacific Northwest is accurately reflected on Willamette’s 61-acre campus. Guided and inspired since 1842 by its motto, “Not unto ourselves alone are we born,” Willamette fosters community and values service. At Willamette, students can be locally involved in social and environmental issues or study abroad. Willamette is ranked third in the nation among colleges its size with more than 270 alumni having joined the Peace Corps since its inception in 1961. The National Wildlife Federation recognized WU as the nation’s higher education leader in sustainability activities. This achievement, a direct result of studentled initiatives, is further evidence that Willamette lives by its motto, producing

responsible citizens of the world who are prepared to live with intention and integrity. At Willamette, the student-faculty ratio of 10:1 allows faculty members to maintain ample office hours and serve as advisors. The professors are engaged in scholarly research and publish their findings, but they are primarily focused on teaching. The size of Willamette’s endowment is consistently among the largest in the Northwest and compares favorably on a national basis. The campus features 42 buildings, plus the Campus Quad and athletic fields. Ford Hall, a new academic building, was completed in 2009 and houses Rhetoric and Media Studies, Computer Science, Math, Digital Art, Film Studies and Music Technology. Funds for the 46,000-squarefoot building included an $8 million gift from Hallie Ford. Willamette benefits from its location across the street from the Oregon State Capitol. In particular, Willamette’s students are often chosen for internships with government organizations.

Willamette Administration Dr. M. Lee Pelton

President

Dr. M. Lee Pelton was appointed the 22nd president of Willamette University in July 1999. Under Pelton’s leadership, the University has increased its academic profile, successfully employing strategies to attract the best faculty and the brightest students from the state, the nation and the world. Since 2001, Willamette University has been ranked a top tier liberal arts college by U.S. News and World Report. President Pelton holds a doctorate from Harvard University and an undergraduate degree in English and psychology from Wichita State University, where he graduated magna cum laude in 1974. His area of academic focus is 19th century British prose and poetry. He served as dean of the college at Colgate University (1988-91) and Dartmouth College (1991-98). At Harvard, he taught in the English Department and was the dean of one of Harvard’s 13 undergraduate colleges. He teaches at Willamette in subjects ranging from 1st century Athens to post-apartheid South Africa.

Mark Majeski

Director of Athletics

Mark Majeski began his tenure at Willamette University in October of 2000, following five years as athletic director at the University of California, Santa Cruz and four years as assistant athletic director at Menlo College. He has been a past chairman of the NCAA Division III membership committee, which provides oversight of the Division III provisional member program. Majeski previously served on the NCAA Division III men’s tennis committee, overseeing championships in that sport. A former basketball, track and softball coach, Majeski also worked venue management and operations for the 1994 FIFA Men’s Soccer World Cup and the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. At WU, Majeski oversees 20 varsity teams, with the Bearcats competing in NCAA Division III, the Northwest Conference and the Intercollegiate Rowing Association. He also is the swimming liaison between the NWC coaches and athletic directors. Majeski received an undergraduate degree in journalism from Menlo College and a master’s degree in higher education administration from San Jose State University. He lives in Salem with his wife, Denise, and their son, Jack Henry, age 6.

Athletic Facilities John Lewis Field at Roy S. “Spec” Keene Stadium is the home of Bearcat baseball. The field is located at Bush’s Pasture Park, near the WU campus. The stadium has a seating capacity of 1,000 with chairbacks behind the plate. The field is natural grass and stays green nearly all year-round WU’s baseball clubhouse has individual lockers for all of the players. The clubhouse also has two satelite televisions. Willamette’s pitchers also can use a conditioning room at the stadium. In 2009, Willamette laser-leveled the infield and improved the mound and home plate areas. New lockers were added and two covered and lighted batting cages were installed. The team also can practice inside Cone Field House. There are two full-length batting cagaes and portable mounds for bullpen throwing. Willamette’s football team plays its home games at McCulloch Stadium, which is next to John Lewis Field. The stadium has a FieldTurf surface with lights for night games, and seats 2,400 fans. Features at the stadium include a new scoreboard with a large video screen. The Charles Bowles Track, is located inside McCulloch Stadium. It is an all-weather facility used by the Willamette track and field and cross country teams, which host meets each year. Cone Field House is home for Willamette’s volleyball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball teams. The arena holds 2,500 fans, with seating on both sides of the court. There is a sound system, plus tables for timers, scorekeepers and statisticians, along with broadcast media. Cone Field House is part of the Lestle J. Sparks Center, which houses offices for the Two of the special features at John Lewis Field are the Baseball Workout Room and the covered batting cage.

Department of Athletics and the Department of Exercise Science. The building has basketball, handball and racquetball courts, a weight lifting and fitness center, classrooms and locker rooms. Also connected to the Sparks Center is the WU natatorium, home of Bearcat swimming. The natatorium, with space for 200 fans, also can be seen from a viewing area in the lobby. The Bearcat soccer teams play home games at Sparks Field, an artificial turf facility next to the Sparks Center. The field is equipped with lights for night games and seats 500 spectators. It also has seating for both teams, plus a public address system. The facility is one of the top college fields in the Northwest. Close to the Sparks Center and Sparks Field are six outdoor tennis courts. The men’s and women’s tennis teams host meets during the spring each year. On the east side of campus is the Willamette Softball Complex. It includes covered dugouts, batting cages, a scoreboard and bleachers. The WU men’s and women’s golf teams usually practice at Illahe Hills Country Club or Creekside Golf Club. Members of the men’s and women’s rowing teams have their own boathouse and hold workouts on the Willamette River in downtown Salem.
