Among those returning is Stefan Redfield (Sr., Sisters, OR/ Sisters HS), who finished 58th in the nation (42nd among scorers). Also returning for the Bearcats after participating in the NCAA Championships last fall are senior Matt Parker (Portland, OR/Lincoln HS), junior Leo Castillo (Parkdale, OR/Hood River Valley HS), junior Ben Donovan (Minneapolis, MN/ South HS), senior Nicholas Rebol (Cottonwood, CA/Red Bluff Union HS) and senior Ryan McLaughlin (Milwaukie, OR/Milwaukie HS). Willamette’s strength and depth have combined to earn the Bearcats a #17 national ranking in the NCAA Division III Men’s Country Preseason Poll by the United

Kaitlin Greene States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). In the West Region rankings, the Willamette men begin the year ranked #2 behind Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. In addition, the Willamette women’s team begins the year holding the #4 ranking in the West Region. The Bearcats have six of seven runners back on the women’s team who participated at the NCAA West Regional in 2009. In addition to coaching the distance runners, he was the head assistant coach for the track and field teams. As the head assistant coach at LU, Franz worked with a squad that had 50 NAIA Track and Field All-Americans, including 11 NAIA National Champions. He helped guide the Lindenwood men’s team to an NAIA Indoor National Championship as well as an Outdoor National runner-up finish. Assistant Coach (4th year)

Christopher Sabato is in his sixth year at Willamette University as an assistant coach with the cross country and track and field teams. He works with the cross country teams in the fall and coaches the pole vaulters during the spring. Sabato started his coaching career at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn. At Rhodes, he was an assistant for a program that had 37 All-Conference athletes and four NCAA Division III national qualifiers during his two seasons. Sabato attended Alfred University in Alfred, N.Y., where he graduated in 2002 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. During his collegiate track and field career, Sabato competed in the sprints, the long jump, and the pole vault. He was a three-time All-State pole vaulter in the New York State Collegiate Track Conference. Along with his coaching duties, Sabato is the web master for the Willamette Athletics web site and is a web programer for the University’s web team. He also has designed some of the covers and inside pages used in media guides produced by the Athletics Department.

Bobbi St. Clair is an assistant coach with the Willamette cross country teams. She also assists with coaching the Bearcat track and field squads. St. Clair competed as a distance runner for the Bearcats when she attended WU as a student. She scored in three consecutive NWC track and field championship meets in the steeplechase. In cross country, she participated at the NCAA Championships in 2004. She graduated from WU in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science. She earned a Master of Arts in Teaching degree from Willamette in 2006. St. Clair currently teaches physical education at McKay High School in Salem. Her experiences as a Willamette runner transfer well to her coaching position. She can relate to the combination of academic course work, competitive meets and varied practice schedules faced by the Bearcats. St. Clair’s focus during the track and field season is on distance running. Her efforts have helped Willamette develop a talented group of Bearcat distance runners.

Willamette Home Meets

Willamette will host three meets in 2010, with all of the meets held in scenic Bush’s Pasture Park. The first meet is the Willamette Grass Course on Sept. 17. WU also will host the 36th Annual Charles Bowles Willamette Invitational on Oct. 2 and the NCAA Division III West Regional on Nov. 13. NCAA Division III West Regional Each year, the NCAA West Regional is held in Oregon or California. The event brings together the best NCAA Division III teams from the West Coast and Colorado. This fall, the Bearcats will host the West Regional at Bush’s Pasture Park. The meet will determine which teams and individuals qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships, set for Waverly, Iowa, on Nov. 20. 36th Annual Charles Bowles Willamette Invitational The 36th Annual Charles Bowles Willamette Invitational will be one of the largest college cross country meets in the West. The meet is expected to have have over 1,100 entries. The prestigious event is named after legendary Willamette coach Charles Bowles, who passed away in 2005. This year’s races will include teams from Oregon, Washington, Tennessee, Hawaii, Idaho, Alaska, Montana, California, Nebraska and British Columbia. The men’s course record set by Dave Davis in 2002 is 23:13.62 for 8 kilometers. The women’s record was set in 2003 by Margaret Butler, who ran 5 kilometers in 16:43.70. Willamette Grass Course Meet The WU Grass Course Meet is a fun event each season. The 2010 meet will feature teams from the Pacific Northwest and from

2010 BEARCAT CROSS COUNTRY

California. The course works its way through the upper section of Bush’s Pasture Park and is a 2-kilometer loop that winds through the trees. It is a challenging test for the athletes. The men’s race covers 7.1 kilometers and the women’s race is 5 kilometers.

The arena includes a sound system, plus tables for official timers, scorekeepers, statisticians and broadcast media. Also connected to the Sparks Center is the WU natatorium, home of Bearcat swimming. The natatorium, with space for 200 fans, also can be seen from a viewing area in the lobby. Near the Sparks Center is Sparks Field, an artificial turf facility for men’s and women’s soccer. Sparks Field is equipped with lights for night games and holds 500 spectactors. Close to Sparks Center are WU Softball Field and the WU Tennis Courts. The softball field has dugouts, batting cages, bleachers and a scoreboard.
