Willamette University Willamette University is a top-ranked private liberal arts university located directly across the street from Oregon’s Capitol. It is home to 1,801 undergraduates and 805 graduate students in law, management and education. The campus is centered around the Mill Stream and is home to numerous ancient trees and open green spaces. The beauty of the Pacific Northwest is accurately reflected on Willamette’s 61- acre campus. Guided and inspired since 1842 by its motto, “Not unto ourselves alone are we born,” Willamette fosters community and values service. At Willamette, students can be locally involved in social and environmental issues or study abroad. Willamette is ranked third in the nation among colleges its size with more than 270 alumni having joined the Peace Corps since its inception in 1961. The National Wildlife Federation recognized WU as the nation’s higher education leader in sustainability activities. This achievement, a direct result of studentled initiatives, is further evidence that Willamette lives by its motto, producing responsible citizens of the world who are prepared to live with intention and integrity.
The clock tower and Jackson Plaza are located outside the Hatfield Library.
At Willamette, the student-faculty ratio of 10:1 allows faculty members to maintain ample office hours and serve as advisors. The professors are engaged in scholarly research and publish their findings, but they are primarily focused on teaching. The size of Willamette’s endowment is consistently among the largest in the Northwest and compares favorably on a national basis. The campus features 42 buildings, plus the Campus Quad and athletic fields. Ford Hall, a new academic building, was completed in 2009 and houses Rhetoric and Media Studies, Computer Science, Math, Digital Art, Film Studies and Music Technology. Funds for the 46,000-square-foot building included an $8 million gift from Hallie Ford. Willamette benefits from its location across the street from the Oregon State Capitol. In particular, Willamette’s students are often chosen for internships with government organizations. Students gather to study and relax by the Mill Stream.

Cone Field House/Gordie James Court is the home of the WU basketball teams. Gordie James was WU’s head men’s basketball coach from 1987-88 through 2008-09.
Cone Field House/Gordie James Court is the home of the Willamette men’s basketball, women’s basketball and volleyball teams. The arena holds 2,500 fans, with plenty of seating on each side of the court. There is a sound system, plus tables for official timers, scorekeepers and statisticians, as well as broadcast media. The WU court is connected to the Lestle J. Sparks Center, which houses offices for the Department of Athletics and the Department of Exercise Science. The building has basketball, handball and racquetball courts, a weight lifting and fitness center, classrooms and locker rooms. Also connected to the Sparks Center is the WU Natatorium, home of Bearcat swimming. The swimming pool, with space for 200 fans, can be seen from a viewing area in the lobby. The Willamette University soccer teams play home games at Sparks Field, an artificial turf facility next to the Sparks Center. The field is equipped with lights for night games and seats 500 spectactors. The facility is one of the top college fields in the Northwest. In addition to lights and bleachers, Sparks Field has a public address system and seating for both teams. Close to the Sparks Center and Sparks Field are six outdoor tennis courts. The men’s and women’s tennis teams host meets at the WU Tennis Courts each year. Willamette’s football team plays home games at McCulloch Stadium, located two blocks from
campus. The stadium seats 2,400 fans, has lights for night games and features a scoreboard with a video display screen. McCulloch Stadium has a FieldTurf playing surface. It also features spacious locker rooms, meeting rooms and an athletic training room. It creates the atmosphere of an old stadium, but provides many modern conveniences. The Charles Bowles Track, located inside McCulloch Stadium, is an all-weather facility that showcases Willamette’s track and field and cross country teams, which host meets each year. WU hosted the NCAA West Regional cross country meet in 2005, 2008 and 2010. Located near McCulloch Stadium is Roy S. “Spec” Keene Stadium at John Lewis Field, the home of Bearcat baseball. The stadium features chairback seating in part of the grandstand and an overall capacity of 1,000. The entire football, track, cross country and baseball complex is at Bush’s Pasture Park. The park hosts cross country meets on its wide paths and is known for its art exhibits and rose garden. On the east side of campus is the Willamette Softball Field. It includes batting cages, covered dugouts, a scoreboard and bleachers. The men’s and women’s golf teams practice at Illahe Hills Country Club or Creekside Golf Club. Athletes on the WU men’s and women’s rowing teams work out on the Willamette River in downtown Salem.

2010-11 Season Outlook
Ryan Meehan prepares to drive into the lane. The Willamette men’s basketball team is ready to continue its up-tempo style in Head Coach Kip Ioane’s second season. Last year, WU went 9-16 overall, 6-10 in the Northwest Conference. The Bearcats ended the season strong, winning six of their last nine games. Ioane’s fast-paced game helped the Bearcats score 82.6 points per game in 2009-10. WU scored 80 or more points 11 times, including seven games above 90. Leading the team this year will be four returning starters. The list includes senior guards Robbie Kunke and Marcus Holmes, plus junior wing Ryan Meehan and junior wing/post Taylor Mounts. Mounts, Meehan and Holmes averaged in double figures last year, while Kunke led the NWC in assists. Mounts earned 14.2 points per game, while Meehan added 11.0 points per contest and Holmes chipped in 10.4. Kunke earned 138 assists in 22 games (6.3 avg.). Mounts shot 85.3% on free throws (81 of 95) to rank second in the NWC. He added 6.7 rebounds per game, good for sixth in the conference. He blocked 20 shots and registered 16 steals. Meehan was a key player in NWC play. He tallied 13.5 points per conference game, while shooting a team-high 57.1% (80 of 140). He scored in double figures in 13 of 16 NWC games, including 25 points in a 105-93 win at Linfield College on Feb. 6, 2010. Adding depth was Holmes, who reached double digits in scoring 15 times. He had 20 points against Corban University on Dec. 11, 2009, in a 78-74 win. He ended the year with 60 assists and 28 steals. Kunke’s ability to provide quality passes allowed him to finish his junior season with 380 career assists. He also has 426 career points and 207 career boards. It will be hard to replace Cameron Mitchell (Post), who graduated after leading the NWC with 21.1 points and 12.5 rebounds per game in 2009-10. He was First
Page 8
Team All-NWC as a junior and a senior. In 2009-10, he was selected First Team All-West Region and was one of 10 finalists for the Jostens Trophy. Mitchell scored double figures in all 25 games last year. He shot 57.9% from the field (2nd in NWC). In three years at WU, he scored 1,200 points and had 791 rebounds. Including one season at the University of Redlands, he earned 1,342 points and 959 rebounds. Rather than attempting to replace Mitchell with one player, the Bearcats will rely on their combined skills to offset the loss of such a talented athlete. The four returning starters will lead the way, but they won’t be alone. Last year, Terrell Malley (So., G) played in all 25 games (4 starts). His speed and quickness helped him average 10.7 points per game. He was strong on fast breaks and was one of the team’s top players at taking the ball to the basket. Other players who saw action in at least 10 games last year are Cody Pastorino (So., G), Oliver Hughes (So., Wing), and Leo Abello (So., G). WU’s newcomers are led by sophomore post Sean Dart, a transfer from Eastern Oregon University. Dart will provide an inside presence while helping Mounts lead the team’s rebounding efforts. Cory Lowe (Fr., Post) joins the team after playing four years of football at WU. A 2010 graduate, he is enrolled in Willamette’s MBA program. In the fall of 2009, he was named First Team All-NWC in football. Several first-year players will supply overall depth. The roster features five true freshmen, plus Trevor Bos (Fr., G), who missed last year due to injury. Also competing is Cole Douglas (Fr., Wing), a former WU football player who is in his senior year academically. Willamette opens the 2010-11 season on Nov. 16 at Western Washington University. The Bearcats will play at Concordia University (Ore.) on Nov. 18. The Bearcats play their home opener on Nov. 20 against Northwest Christian University. Willamette will dedicate the basketball court to honor former Head Coach Gordie James at halftime.

NWC and NCAA Division III
The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 84 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College. Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew in 1978. Whitworth left out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only and withdrew in 2009. The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted from the NAIA to the NCAA.
Willamette is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and competes in Division III, which has 447 members and is the largest NCAA division. Division III is about following your passions and discovering your potential. The college experience is a time of learning and growth. For student-athletes in Division III, this happens in the classroom, through athletics and, ultimately, by completing an academic degree. The Division III experience provides student-athletes with the opportunity to participate in a competitive athletic environment. Student-athletes can push themselves to excellence. At WU, studentathletes are encouraged to pursue their full passions and find their potential through a comprehensive educational experience. Athletes in Division III do not receive financial aid related to athletic ability. Willamette and other NCAA Division III members encourage students to participate by maximizing the variety of athletic opportunities. An emphasis is placed on conference and regional play. Willamette often sends its teams to California, Idaho, Washington and Texas for in-region games. NCAA Division III members establish an environment with cultural diversity and gender equity among student-athletes and staff. In Division III, faculty and staff focus on the well-being of student-athletes and their overall academic and athletic success.

Some of the most rewarding moments happen on the sidelines. Whether it’s a crowd of hundreds doing “The Wave” or a couple of parents holding a sign, this is the part of any game that hits home for us — people supporting people. In fact, it’s exactly why at American Family, we’re happy and proud to join the cheering section.
