2010-11 Season Preview Hanna Connett, Sr.
Head Coach Leslie Shevlin will aim to keep building the WU men’s and women’s swimming programs in 2010-11. Shevlin will be helped by first-year Assistant Coach Guy Gniotczynski. Willamette returns six swimmers from the 2009-10 team. Captains Ian McGahan and Kara Koetje are set to lead the 2010-11 teams. Here’s a look at Willamette’s strengths in each stroke and the individual medley.
Freestyle On the women’s side Lauren Ballinger, a standout during her freshman season, will be joined by freshman Sylvie Peterson in the sprint freestyle events. Peterson was recently named the 5th fastest female during the 2009-10 Oregon Short Course season. Look for these two to make their presence known on all relays and in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events. Senior Hanna Connett will return this year from her 14th place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle event at the Northwest Conference Championships last season. Joining Connett is freshman Erin Parkinson. Parkinson will add depth in the distance freestyle events. For the men, all three swimmers look to make an impact in the middle distance races. Chris Whitehead (Fr.) will use his 6’2” frame to take on the NWC in the sprint freestyle events.
Butterfly Willamette is historically deep in the butterfly events and this season will be no exception. Page 2
On the women’s side, the Bearcats return Kara Koetje (Jr.) and Kayla Kosaki (So.). Both Koetje and Kosaki placed in the 100-yard and 200-yard events at the NWC Championships last season. Ian McGahan (So.) returns for the Willamette men. McGahan made it to the consolation final in the 200-yard butterfly at last year’s conference meet. McGahan will be joined by Austin Williams (So.) in the men’s butterfly events.
Backstroke Senior Chelsea Ibarra will lead the Bearcats in the backstroke events this year. Adding depth on the backstroke and speed on the relays will be Peterson.
Breaststroke The Bearcats aspire to be stronger in the breaststroke events this season. Parkinson and Whitehead look to lead the way in both the 100-yard and the 200-yard breaststroke events, as well as on both medley relays. Connett and Susan Barnes (Fr.) will add depth for the Bearcats in the sprint breaststroke events. Individual Medley Connett, Koetje, and Kosaki provide the Bearcats a formidable front in the individual medley. With the addition of Parkinson on the women’s side and Williams on the men’s side, the 200-yard and 400-yard medley events look to be strong for the Bearcats.

Leslie Shevlin is in her second season as the head coach of the Willamette men’s and women’s swimming teams. Shevlin helped several members of the 2009-10 teams earn personal-best times at the Northwest Conference Championship meet last season. Gwen Schulze (‘10) finished 2nd in the 100-yard butterfly, 3rd in the 200-yard backstroke and 9th in the 200-yard individual medley. All three of her times were personal bests. Shevlin coached two other swimmers to top 10 finishes at the NWC Championships. Jenna Larrow (‘10) earned a 9th place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Lauren Ballinger (So.) captured 10th place in the 100-yard freestyle. Prior to joining the Willamette coaching staff, Shevlin was the assistant women’s swimming coach at the University of New Mexico for a total of four seasons. She previously served as a graduate assistant at Duquesne University. In 2003, Shevlin earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, where she majored in Communication Studies. She received a Master of Arts degree in Liberal Studies from Duquesne in 2005. At UNC-Wilmington, Shevlin competed on the swimming team all four years. She also was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at UNCW. Page 4
She was a graduate assistant swimming coach at Duquesne for two years. She had a variety of duties at Duquesne, including coordinating road trips, team building and serving as the primary recruiter. After completing her master’s degree, Shevlin was hired as an assistant coach at New Mexico. Her primary duties were in recruiting and the coaching of the distance freestyle group. While working at UNM, she was a youth team assistant coach with the Lobo Aquatic Club. She also coached at the U.S. Air Force Academy Summer Camps in 2007 and 2008.

Guy Gniotczynski Assistant Coach (1st year)
Guy Gniotczynski is in his first year as the
assistant men’s and women’s swimming coach at Willamette University. He began working at Willamette during June of 2010. He spent the past two years as a graduate assistant coach for the swimming teams at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisc. Prior to coaching at Carthage, Gniotczynski was the assistant swim coach at the Schroeder YMCA in Brown Deer, Wisc.
At Willamette, he assists Head Coach Leslie Shevlin in all aspects of the swimming program. His duties include recruiting, management of home meets, assisting with swim training, and strength and conditioning. In addition to coaching at Willamette, Gniotczynski helps with the Willamette Swim School and Swim Camps. He also is the Senior Prep coach (ages 11-14) for the Bearcat Swim Club. Gniotczynski received a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Carroll University (Wisc.) in 2003. He was a four-year letterman on the men’s swimming team at Carroll. He earned a Master’s in Education from Carthage in 2010.

Conference and National Affiliations
The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 84 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College. Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only and dropped out in 2009. The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes. Page 12
Willamette is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and competes in Division III, which has 447 members and is the largest NCAA division. Division III is about following your passions and discovering your potential. The college experience is a time of learning and growth. For student-athletes in Division III, this happens in the classroom, through athletics and, ultimately, by earning an academic degree. The Division III experience provides student-athletes with the opportunity to participate in a competitive athletic environment, where they can push themselves to excellence. At Willamette, student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their full passions and find their potential through a comprehensive educational experience. Athletes in Division III do not receive financial aid related to athletic ability. Willamette and other NCAA Division III members encourage students to participate by maximizing the variety of athletic opportunities. Primary emphasis is placed on conference and regional play. WU often sends its teams to California, Idaho, Washington and Texas for in-region games. NCAA Division III members establish an environment with cultural diversity and gender equity among student-athletes and staff. In Division III, faculty and staff focus on the well-being of student-athletes.

Dr. M. Lee Pelton
President
Dr. M. Lee Pelton was appointed the 22nd president of Willamette University in July, 1999. Under Pelton’s leadership, the University has increased its academic profile, successfully employing strategies to attract the best faculty and the brightest students from the state, the nation and the world. Since 2001, Willamette University has been ranked a top tier liberal arts college by U.S. News and World Report. President Pelton holds a doctorate from Harvard University and an undergraduate degree in English and psychology from Wichita State University, where he graduated magna cum laude in 1974. His area of academic focus is 19th century British prose and poetry. He served as dean of the college at Colgate University (1988-91) and Dartmouth College (1991-98). At Harvard, he taught in the English Department and was the dean of one of Harvard’s 13 undergraduate colleges. He teaches at Willamette in subjects ranging from 1st century Athens to post-apartheid South Africa.
Mark Majeski
Director of Athletics
Mark Majeski began his tenure with Willamette University in October of 2000, following five years as athletic director at the University of California, Santa Cruz and four years as assistant athletic director at Menlo College. He has been a past chairman of the NCAA Division III membership committee, which provides oversight of the Division III provisional member program. Majeski previously served on the NCAA Division III men’s tennis committee, overseeing championships in that sport. A former basketball, track and softball coach, Majeski also worked venue management and operations for the 1994 FIFA Men’s Soccer World Cup and the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. At WU, Majeski oversees 20 varsity teams, with the Bearcats competing in NCAA Division III, the Northwest Conference and the Intercollegiate Rowing Association. He also is the swimming liaison between the NWC coaches and athletic directors. Majeski received an undergraduate degree in journalism from Menlo College and a master’s degree in higher education administration from San Jose State University. He lives in Salem with his wife, Denise, and their son, Jack Henry, age 6.

Willamette Athletic Facilities The Willamette Natatorium is the home of Bearcat swimming. It is attached to the Lestle J. Sparks Cemter. The natatorium, with space for 200 fans, also can be seen from a viewing area in the lobby. WU’s pool is a six-lane, 25-yard competition venue with a Colorado electronic timing system. The north end is composed of glass, opening to the Martha Springer Botanical Garden and allowing natural light to enter the natatorium. The Sparks Center includes offices for the Department of Athletics and the Department of Exercise Science. There are also basketball, handball and racquetball courts, a weight lifting and fitness center, classrooms and locker rooms. Cone Field House is the home court for the Willamette men’s basketball, women’s basketball and volleyball teams. The arena holds 2,500 fans, with plenty of seating on each side of the court. There is a sound system, plus tables for official timers, scorekeepers and statisticians, along with space for broadcast media. The Willamette University soccer teams play home games at Sparks Field, an artificial turf facility next to the Sparks Center. The field is equipped with lights for night games and seats 500 spectactors. The facility is one of the top college fields in the Northwest. Close to the Sparks Center and Sparks Field are six outdoor tennis courts. The Willamette men’s and women’s tennis teams host meets at the WU Tennis Courts against NWC opponents each spring.

Willamette’s football team plays home games at McCulloch Stadium, located two blocks from campus. The stadium seats 2,400 fans, has lights for night games and also features a scoreboard with a video display. McCulloch Stadium is a quality facility with a FieldTurf playing surface, along with spacious locker rooms, meeting rooms and an athletic training room. It has the atmosphere of an old stadium, but includes a variety of conveniences for the coaches players and fans.
Home meets are held at the WU Natatorium.
The Charles Bowles Track, located inside McCulloch Stadium, is an all-weather facility for the WU track and field and cross country teams. WU hosted the NCAA West Regional in cross country in 2005, 2008 and 2010. Located near McCulloch Stadium is Roy S. “Spec” Keene Stadium at John Lewis Field, the home of Bearcat baseball. The stadium features chairback seating in part of the grandstand and an overall capacity of 1,000. The entire football, track, cross country and baseball complex is at Bush’s Pasture Park. The park hosts cross country meets on its wide paths and is known for its art exhibits and rose garden. On the east side of campus is the Willamette Softball Complex. It includes covered dugouts, batting cages, a scoreboard and bleachers. The WU men’s and women’s golf teams usually practice at Illahe Hills Country Club or Creekside Golf Club. Members of the men’s and women’s rowing teams hold workouts on the Willamette River in downtown Salem.

About Willamette Willamette University is a top-ranked private liberal arts university located directly across the street from Oregon’s Capitol. It is home to 1,801 undergraduates and 805 graduate students in law, management and education. The campus is centered around the Mill Stream and is home to numerous ancient trees and open green spaces. The beauty of the Pacific Northwest is accurately reflected on Willamette’s 61-acre campus. Guided and inspired since 1842 by its motto, “Not unto ourselves alone are we born,” Willamette fosters community and values service. At Willamette, students can be locally involved in social and environmental issues or study abroad. Willamette is ranked third in the nation among colleges its size with more than 270 alumni having joined the Peace Corps since its inception in 1961. The National Wildlife Federation recognized WU as the nation’s higher education leader in sustainability activities. The clock tower and Jackson Plaza are located outside the Hatfield Library.
At Willamette, the student-faculty ratio of 10:1 allows faculty members to maintain ample office hours and serve as advisors. The professors are engaged in scholarly research and publish their findings, but they are primarily focused on teaching. The size of Willamette’s endowment is consistently among the largest in the Northwest and compares favorably on a national basis. The campus features 42 buildings, plus the Campus Quad and athletic fields. Ford Hall, the newest academic building, was completed in 2009 and houses Rhetoric and Media Studies, Computer Science, Math, Digital Art, Film Studies and Music Technology. Funds for the 46,000-squarefoot building included an $8 million gift from Hallie Ford. Willamette benefits from its location across the street from the Oregon State Capitol. In particular, Willamette students are often chosen for internships with government organizations.
