2011 Season Preview For quite some time, the Willamette University track and field teams have been among the best in the Northwest Conference. Since the 2002 season, the Bearcats have won six NWC men's team championships and have claimed nine consecutive NWC women's team titles. Willamette has sent numerous athletes to the NCAA Division III national championships. The Bearcats will seek to continue their success during the 2011 season, which gets underway with the Willamette Opener on Saturday, March 5. Leading Willamette are two athletes who competed at the 2010 NCAA National Championships. They are decathlete Evin Colignon (Sr., Poulsbo, Wash.) and women's distance runner Kimber Mattox (Jr., Bend, Ore.). Mattox was ninth at the NCAA meet in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:48.16. It was her second trip to the NCAA Championships. She placed sixth in the steeplechase in 2009 for All-America honors. Earlier in 2010, Mattox triumphed in the steeplechase at the Oregon Relays in 10:41.78 to qualify for nationals. Mattox also achieved Stefan Redfield Northwest Conference championships in the

steeplechase and the 1,500-meter run. She achieved an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 4:36.06 in the 1,500 at the Oregon Twilight. Colignon placed 13th in the decathlon at the 2010 NCAA National Championships with 6,126 points. He achieved a second place finish in the decathlon shot put with a toss of 43'8". His top score of the year was 6,472 points as he took second place at the NWC Multi-Event Championships. Mattox also earned All-America honors in the fall of 2010 by placing 35th at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships. She won the NWC individual cross country title earlier in the season. Returning women's thrower Katie Peterson (Jr., Independence, Ore.) recorded an NCAA provisional mark of 134'1" in the javelin at the Willamette Opener last spring. She suffered an injury later in the year. In addition to Colignon, five other returning members of the Bearcat men's team registered NCAA provisional qualifying marks last season. Stefan Redfield (Sr., Sisters, Ore.) earned provisional times in two events. He recorded a time of 14:42.26 in the 5,000-meter run at the Oregon Relays and achieved a time of 3:53.30 in the 1,500-meter run at the Willamette Last Chance. He placed second in the NWC in the 1,500. Ben Donovan (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn.) and Nick Rebol (Sr., Cottonwood, Calif.) each earned qualifying times in the steeplechase. Donovan's top time was 9:21.80 at the Oregon Relays and Rebol's best time was 9:24.29 at the NWC Championships. Donovan won the NWC title and Rebol placed second. In the field events, Josh Clothier (Sr., Walla Walla, Wash.) and Brandt Nevin (Sr., Eagle Point, Ore.) produced NCAA provisional marks. Clothier earned a top mark of 50'10.25" in the shot put. Nevin achieved a javelin throw of 194'4" while competing in the decathlon.
For the WU women's team, other top returning athletes are juniors Jaela Dinsmore (Hines, Ore.) and Brandi Miller (Grants Pass, Ore.), as well as sophomores Theresa Edwards (Lake Tapps, Wash.) and Erynn Rebol (Cottonwood, Calif.). Edwards competed at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships this past fall and placed 13th at the NCAA West Regional. In track and field last year, she took second in the NWC in the 800 and was Brandi Miller third in the 1,500. Dinsmore won an NWC title as part of WU's 4 x 400-meter relay team in 2010. The Bearcats won the race with a time of 4:01.88. Erynn Rebol won the 800 at the NWC Meet by completing the race in 2:22.34. Rebol also contributed to WU’s victory in the 4 x 400-meter relay. Miller placed sixth in the NWC in the heptathlon as a sophomore last season. Her score was 3,926 points. Additional top athletes for the men are Paul Winger (Jr., Bonney Lake, Wash.), Leo Castillo (Jr., Parkdale, Ore.), Neal Howard (Jr., Seattle, Wash.), Steven Collins (Sr., Zillah, Wash.) and David Oppat (Sr., Beaverton, Ore.). Winger won two NWC individual titles last spring, as he took first place in the 200-meter dash in 21.98 seconds and was first in the 400-meter dash in 48.98 seconds. Northwest Conference
The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 84 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College. Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only and dropped out in 2009. The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998.
Page 32
U N I V E R S I T Y
Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.

Bush’s Pasture Park Bush’s Pasture Park covers 90.5 acres and is just two blocks from the Willamette University campus. It is a public city park and is highly utilized by the Willamette community and by the citizens of Salem. Professors take their classes to the park to conduct scientific surveys or to perform ecological restoration projects. Students take breaks from studying to exercise in the park or have a picnic. A total of four Willamette sports call the park home. Baseball plays at John Lewis Field, while football plays at McCulloch Stadium, and track and field hosts meets at Charles Bowles Track. The cross country teams use the entire park for training and for home meets, including the Charles Bowles Invitational. The bark trail around the perimeter of the park is approximately 1.5 miles, making it a great place for Bearcat runners to complete an easy run or a full workout. Races at Bush’s Pasture Park are ideal for the spectator as well since there are many vantage points to see the action and cheer, as runners move through the fast, beautiful course.
Minto-Brown Park
2011 Bearcat Track & Field
Although Willamette University is located in the heart of Salem, Bearcat runners love the fact that it takes just five minutes to hit the trail leading to Minto-Brown Island Park. The Willamette River makes up one of the borders of the park. When winter rains come, the river often overflows its banks and pours out into the park, turning it into an island. The park itself, just about two miles from the track, is the perfect place for long runs and workouts. While many of the 20 miles of paths are paved, a bit of exploration and adventure can lead to the soft surfaces of bark paths that runners crave. This 900-acre park doubles as a Wildlife Refuge, so keep your eyes peeled for great blue herons and beavers. The trails wind through orchards, fields, forests and a dog park. Even when the parking lots are full, Minto-Brown is the place to go for those seeking seclusion. In the front of the park, you’ll find plenty of other runners, walkers and bikers, but once you delve into the deeper trails, it feels like you have the place to yourself!
