The Willamette University women’s basketball team returns six players from last year and has added nine new players to the roster for the 2010-11 season. The Bearcats finished 4-21 overall and 2-14 in the Northwest Conference last season. The team will be led by senior guard Alex Zennan, who was an Honorable Mention AllNWC selection last year after averaging 14.6 points per game. She scored in double-digits in 21 games and posted a season-high 27 points on three different occasions. Seniors Erin Barclay and Shayna Glynn will help lead a Willamette team that includes seven freshmen and two transfer students. Kaileigh Westermann (Jr.), Maya McFaddin (Jr.) and Sophie Wilson (So.) also return for the Bearcats. Westermann finished the 2009-10 season averaging 6.5 points per game and 6.8 rebounds per game. She started in all 25 contests as a sophomore. McFaddin, who started in 21 games for the Bearcats last season, averaged 4.6 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. Wilson hopes to increase her scoring in her sophomore season for Willamette, after scoring five or more

points in four of WU’s last five games. Wilson played in all 25 games as a freshman. She gave WU depth at the guard position. Kelsey Mueller (Fr.) and Breanne Faehnrich (Fr.) will add depth at the guard positions for Willamette. At the forward position, the Bearcats have added six players. Transfers Dora Rabih (Jr.) and Andrea Harris (Jr.) will each see time at the forward position. Bearcat freshmen Rebecca Josephson, Tia Williams, Alexa Beeson and MacKenzie Lamson will all battle for time as forwards this year. Inside the paint, WU will look to freshman Alex Brunt-Pluta. Brunt-Pluta’s 6’0” frame will help the Bearcats increase their toughness near the basket. The Bearcats averaged 52.1 points per game under the direction of first year Head Coach Anne Lapray in 2009-10. Willamette shot 32.8% from the field and 62.3% from the free throw line last season. Willamette intends to greatly improve its defensive pressure and win the rebounding battle on a more consistent basis in the coming season. More overall depth should help the Bearcats in the 2010-11 season.
The Bearcats were picked to finish ninth in the Northwest Conference Preseason Poll, as voted on by the head coaches. George Fox University is the early favorite to repeat as NWC Champions.

Willamette University soccer teams play home games at Sparks Field, an artificial turf facility next to the Sparks Center. The field is equipped with lights for night games and is one of the best college fields in the Pacific Northwest. The floor in Cone Field House was officially named Gordie James Court in 2010.
To the west of the Sparks Center are six outdoor tennis courts. To the east is the softball complex. Facilities for football, baseball, cross country, and track and field are located two blocks south of campus, in Bush’s Pasture Park. The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 84 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College. Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978.
PAGE PAGE 20 20
Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only and dropped out in 2009. The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.
Willamette is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and competes in Division III, which has 447 members and is the largest NCAA division. Division III promotes student-athletes following passions and discovering potential.
Conference and National Affiliations
The college experience is a time of learning and growth. For student-athletes in Division III, this happens in the classroom, through athletics and, ultimately, by earning an academic degree. The Division III experience provides studentathletes with the opportunity to participate in a competitive athletic environment, where they can push themselves to excellence. At Willamette, student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their full passions and find their potential through a comprehensive educational experience. Athletes in Division III do not receive financial aid related to athletic ability. Willamette and other NCAA Division III members encourage students to participate by maximizing the variety of athletic opportunities. Primary emphasis is placed on conference and regional play. WU often sends its teams to California, Idaho, Washington and Texas for inregion games. NCAA Division III members establish an environment with cultural diversity and gender equity among student-athletes and staff. In Division III, faculty and staff focus on the wellbeing of student-athletes.
