2010 Season Outlook The Willamette University women’s soccer team returns 12 players from the 2009 team that finished third in the Northwest Conference. WU was picked third in the 2010 preseason poll of conference coaches. The Bearcats concluded the season 9-9-2 overall and 8-7-1 in the NWC. Leading the way in 2010 will be junior Stephanie Skelly (MF) and sophomore Andrea Rowan (MF). Skelly was named First Team All-NWC after scoring six goals during her sophomore year. Three of her goals were game-winning goals. Skelly is the only junior on the 2010 roster. Rowan burst onto the NWC scene last year, scoring three goals and earning two assists. She started in all 20 games and earned Second Team All-NWC. Willamette also returns Alex Batzer (Sr., F) and Ariel Wilson (So., MF). Batzer and Wilson each scored three goals last season and will look to continue to make strong offensive contributions. Two other players will be vital to the Bearcats’ success in 2010. Kelli Gano returns for her fourth year in goal. Gano started in 17 games last season and combined with Jill Schneeman (now studying abroad) to record seven shutouts. Megan Moore (Sr.) will anchor the defense. Moore started in all 20 games and played a total of 1,855 minutes, more than any other player on the team. Willamette has 21 players on its roster, including 12 returners. The team also added eight freshmen to the roster. With 16 underclassmen overall, the Bearcats will rely on the leadership of their upperclassmen. In three previous seasons at Willamette, the Bearcat seniors have accumulated 29 wins, including 25 conference victories. The team will play four non-conference games, beginning with cross town rival Corban Page 2

College. After games against Chapman, Bethel (Minn.) and Northwest (Wash.), the team will open Northwest Conference play against Linfield College. The University of Puget Sound will be the team to beat again in 2010, having won eight consecutive conference championships.

Once again, the Loggers were picked to finish first in the preseason poll, as voted by the head coaches. Whitworth University, which finished in second place in 2009, was the other team picked to finish ahead of the Bearcats in the preseason poll. The team will recognize their three seniors on Oct. 24 before the home game against Puget Sound. Head Coach Hillary Arthur is entering her third season at the helm for Willamette. She has coached WU to a 21-17-2 overall record and an 18-13-1 conference record in her two seasons. The team has finished third in the NWC during each of those seasons. Joining Arthur on the sidelines will be assistant coach Colleen Johnston (3rd year) and goalkeeper coach Gordon Peppers (1st year). Since Willamette started competing in intercollegiate women’s soccer in 1981, the Bearcats have earned 350 wins and a .682 winning percentage. The WU women’s soccer program continues to be a model for success. The 2010 team will aim to continue that high level of play.

Conference and National Affiliations

The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 84 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College. Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only and dropped out in 2009. The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.

Willamette is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and competes in Division III, which has 447 members and is the largest NCAA division. Division III is about following your passions and discovering your potential. The college experience is a time of learning and growth. For student-athletes in Division III, this happens in the classroom, through athletics and, ultimately, by earning an academic degree. The Division III experience provides student-athletes with the opportunity to participate in a competitive athletic environment. Studen-athletes can push themselves to excellence. At WU, studentathletes are encouraged to pursue their full passions and find their potential through a comprehensive educational experience. Athletes in Division III do not receive financial aid related to athletic ability. Willamette and other NCAA Division III members encourage students to participate by maximizing the variety of athletic opportunities. An emphasis is placed on conference and regional play. Willamette often sends its teams to California, Idaho, Washington and Texas for in-region games. NCAA Division III members establish an environment with cultural diversity and gender equity among student-athletes and staff. In Division III, faculty and staff focus on the well-being of student-athletes.

lights for night games. It also features a new scoreboard with a video display screen. There is an athletic training room, along with spacious locker rooms and meeting rooms. McCulloch Stadium creates the atmosphere of an old stadium, but provides many modern conveniences. It has a FieldTurf surface. The Charles Bowles Track, located inside McCulloch Stadium, is an all-weather facility that showcases Willamette’s track and field and cross country teams, which host meets each year. This year, Willamette will host the NCAA West Regional in cross country. Located near McCulloch Stadium is Roy S. “Spec” Keene Stadium at John Lewis Field, the home of Bearcat baseball. The stadium features chairback seating in part of the grandstand and an overall capacity of 1,000. The entire football, track, cross country and baseball complex is at Bush’s Pasture Park. The park hosts cross country meets on its wide paths and is known for its art exhibits and rose garden. On the east side of campus is the Willamette Softball Complex. It includes covered dugouts, batting cages, a scoreboard and bleachers. The men’s and women’s golf teams practice at Illahe Hills Country Club and Creekside Golf Club. Athletes on the men’s and women’s rowing teams have their own boathouse and work out on the Willamette River in downtown Salem. Page 15

Some of the most rewarding moments happen on the sidelines. Whether it’s a crowd of hundreds doing “The Wave” or a couple of parents holding a sign, this is the part of any game that hits home for us — people supporting people. In fact, it’s exactly why at American Family, we’re happy and proud to join the cheering section.

About Willamette Willamette University is a top-ranked private liberal arts university located directly across the street from Oregon’s Capitol. It is home to 1,801 undergraduates and 805 graduate students in law, management and education. The campus is centered around the Mill Stream and is home to numerous ancient trees and open green spaces. The beauty of the Pacific Northwest is accurately reflected on Willamette’s 61- acre campus. Guided and inspired since 1842 by its motto, “Not unto ourselves alone are we born,” Willamette fosters community and values service. At Willamette, students can be locally involved in social and environmental issues or study abroad. Willamette is ranked third in the nation among colleges its size with more than 270 alumni having joined the Peace Corps since its inception in 1961. The National Wildlife Federation recognized WU as the nation’s higher education leader in sustainability activities. This achievement, a direct result of studentled initiatives, is further evidence that Willamette lives by its motto, producing responsible citizens of the world who are prepared to live with intention and integrity.

The clock tower and Jackson Plaza are located outside the Hatfield Library.

At Willamette, the student-faculty ratio of 10:1 allows faculty members to maintain ample office hours and serve as advisors. The professors are engaged in scholarly research and publish their findings, but they are primarily focused on teaching. The Willamette endowment is consistently among the largest in the Northwest and compares favorably on a national basis. The campus features 42 buildings, plus the Campus Quad and athletic fields. Ford Hall, the newest academic building, was completed in 2009 and houses Rhetoric and Media Studies, Computer Science, Math, Digital Art, Film Studies and Music Technology. Funds for the 46,000-square-foot building included an $8 million gift from Hallie Ford. Willamette benefits from its location across the street from the Oregon State Capitol. In particular, Willamette students are often chosen for internships with government organizations.

Students gather to study and relax by the Mill Steam.
