BEARCAT FRESHMEN

willamettE ready for 2012 season The Willamette University baseball team has high expectations for the 2012 season following a 22-17-1 record last spring, including 12-12 in the Northwest Conference. The Bearcats were very close to an even greater season, as the team sustained six one-run losses in NWC action, with three of the losses in extra innings. Willamette has a total of six returning starters on offense with a seventh starter returning from injury. Also returning are two starting pitchers and three of the team’s most experienced relief pitchers. Overall, the Bearcats have seven players on the roster who have previously earned All-Northwest Conference recognition. At the top of the list of returning All-NWC selections is Mitch Rowan (Jr., OF), who missed all but seven games in 2011 with a hand injury. In 2010, he was named First Team All-NWC and was a First Team All-West Region pick by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA). Rowan was a First Team Preseason All-America choice by D3baseball.com last season. This year, even with limited playing time in 2011, he is an Honorable Mention Preseason All-America selection. Other returning All-NWC players in the field are junior outfielder Tyson Giza (H.M., 2010), junior outfielder Sky Kelley (H.M., 2010) and sophomore first baseman Brandon Chinn (2nd Team, 2011). Three pitchers on this year’s roster also have attained All-NWC status. They are junior starter Brandon Simon (2nd Team, 2011), senior reliever Blake Paisley (H.M., 2011) and junior closer Parker Johnson (H.M., 2011).

Infield The Bearcats are bolstered by three returning starters on the infield. All three started more than 30 games as freshmen last year. Chinn batted .330 for the Bearcats with 16 RBIs and 15 runs scored. At first base, he earned a .993 fielding percentage while leading the team with 287 putouts. Tommy Kawamura (So.) played second base last season and hit .332, while walking a team-high 27 times and scoring 27 runs. Kawamura moves to shortstop this season, where he will take over Doug Bloom, who was a four-year starter. Bloom graduated this past spring after setting a school record with 499 career assists. Tosh Semlacher (So., UTIL) saw action at several positions last year. His athletic ability helped him achieve a .296 batting average. He scored 25 runs, produced 23 RBIs and tied for the team lead with two triples. Chinn will battle returning players Alex Lavery (So., 1B) and Michael Oliver (Sr., 1B) for the starting position at first base. Lavery batted .375 in 2011, primarily as a pinchhitter for the Bearcats. Oliver attained a .326 batting average and contributed a .977 fielding percentage on defense. Likewise, Semlacher is one of three players with the potential to start at third base this spring. The other challengers are Galen Duff (Jr., IF) and Tyler Olson (Fr. RHP/IF). Duff

2012 season outloo k

has played mostly as a substitute at second base, but that didn’t prevent him from hitting a solid .333 last season. Two freshmen are the top prospects to claim the starting position at second base. They are Hunter Gallant from Rescue, Calif., and Tanner Oates from Sparks, Nev. Both have the skills to be key players for the Bearcats.

Outfield Rowan returns to the lineup this spring and will start in left field. He hit .403 in 2010 with 41 runs and 42 RBIs. He batted .393 last year before injuring his had. Rowan is tied for sixth on Willamette’s career list with 17 home runs. He hit 12 homers in 2010. In center field, Giza will be the starter for the third consecutive year. Last spring, he started 39 games, batted .333, scored 32 runs and hit 10 doubles. He registered 113 putouts and attained a .991 fielding percentage. While two of the outfield positions have clearly defined starters, the other position is up for grabs. Returning players Kelley and Adam Reid (Sr.) have an edge in experience. Kelley achieved a .374 batting average in 2010, while Reid hit .297 in 2011. Both can provide the Bearcats with big plays on defense. Also looking to receive time in right field will be freshmen Rolenn Himuro and Andrew Wilson. Bryan Afzali, also a freshman, will provide depth at the outfield positions. T.C. Lee, who led the team with a .417 batting average in 2011, graduated after being chosen Second Team All-America, First Team All-West Region and First Team All-NWC. Lee finished his career ranked second at Willamette in batting average (.368), hits (201), doubles (45) and home runs (34). He belted 15 doubles and 12 homers last season.

Catching This is probably WU’s most competitive fielding position with one returning player and four newcomers talented enough to challenge for the starting spot. Dylan Summers (Sr.) played in 17 games with 10 starts in 2011. He achieved a .966 fielding percentage. Ben Petersen (Jr.) is the most experienced newcomer after playing two seasons at the junior college level. Freshmen who will battle for playing time are Tiras Koon, Jake Berg-Rosenblatt and Brad Breier. Max Stepan, the starting catcher from last season, has graduated and will be playing this year with the Feldkirch Cardinals (Austria) in the Baseball Bundesliga. Last year, Stepan batted .381 with 39 runs and 39 RBIs. He hit the ball out of the park 11 times to finish his career third on WU’s all-time list with 25 home runs.

PAGE 18

2012 season outlook

Designated Hitter Head Coach Aaron Swick may have more quality options at designated hitter than the Bearcats have had in several seasons. All of the athletes vying for playing time at designated hitter also will challenge for action as infielders or outfielders. Topping the list of candidates are Semlacher, Koon, Lavery and Olson. Nearly every other top player is capable of helping out at this important offensive position.

Pitching Two of last year’s primary starters are back on the mound this season. Brandon Simon (Jr., RHP) and Blake Paisley (Sr., RHP) led the WU pitching staff in 2011. Simon went 7-3 with a 2.31 earned run average. Paisley went 5-1 and led the team with a 2.21 ERA. Simon struck out a total of 45 batters and held opponents to a .227 batting average in 70 innings. Paisley allowed just two home runs and struck out 24 batters in 53 innings. Both helped Willamette lead NCAA Division III in fewest walks allowed per nine innings (1.95). Paisley walked six batters and Simon walked seven. WU graduated one primary starter, Chris Torgerson. In 2011, Torgerson pitched three complete games and registered 36 strikeouts in 63 1/3 innings. A trio of talented pitchers will compete for the third spot in the Northwest Conference pitching rotation. Returning player Jamie McCaffrey (Jr., LHP) saw action in 11 games with three starts last year. He struck out 18 batters in 28 innings of work. Among the newcomers, Olson, who also will challenge for playing time on the infield, and T.J. Whidby (Fr., RHP) have shown the greatest potential as starters. Olson played at Yuba City High School in California, while Whidby pitched for Redmond High School in Washington. The bullpen should be a strength for the Bearcats. Parker Johnson (Jr., RHP) returns as the closer, after recording four saves and a 1.46 ERA in 2011. He struck out 12 batters in 24 2/3 innings. Experience in middle relief will be provided by Ryan Smith (Sr., RHP). Smith led the team with 15 appearances and had a 2.54 ERA in his first season with the Bearcats last spring. Other top returning relief pitchers are Jake Jones (Jr,, RHP) and Henry Harrison (So., LHP). Key newcomers joining the relievers are Blake Evetts (Fr., RHP) and Peter Hoffman (Fr., RHP). Bringing depth to the bullpen will be Eland Tsubata (Fr., LHP), Garrett Davis (So., RHP), Zach Holcomb (Fr., RHP) and Jared Virtue (Fr., LHP).

Schedule Willamette’s schedule features 24 games against Northwest Conference opponents, with three games against each NWC foe. The schedule also includes a challenging list of non-conference games. The Bearcats will open the season with a four-game series at Simpson University in Redding, Calif., followed by a four-game set at the College of Idaho in Caldwell, Idaho. WU will play additional non-conference games against crosstown rival Corban University as well as in-state foe Oregon Institute of Technology. Willamette’s players and coaches plan to battle for the NWC title this spring. Last year, the Bearcats finished three games out of second place and two games out of third. The second place team, University of Puget Sound, was defeated by the Bearcats two times in three games.

BEARCATS EARN 22-17-1 RECORD IN 2011 Willamette University concluded the 2011 season with a 22-17-1 record. It was the most wins for the Bearcats since 2001. Willamette was 12-12 in the Northwest Conference with six losses by one run. The Bearcats played the 16th hardest schedule in NCAA Division III in 2011 according to Boyd’s World. Even so, the WU pitching staff led Division III in fewest walks allowed per nine innings (1.95). The Bearcats were 43rd in team ERA (3.60). On offense, WU ranked in the top 50 in homers (14th, 33) and homers per game (14th, 0.83), plus slugging percentage (31st, .457), and sacrifice flies (40th, 23).

in hits (201) and doubles (45), as well as home runs (34). He was included in the top 10 in at bats (546), runs (131), RBIs (131) and walks (72). Max Stepan (C), who also received First Team All-NWC honors in 2011, was in the top 10 in battting average (.341), doubles (33), home runs (25) and RBIs (102). Chris Torgerson (RHP), who had a 3.84 ERA as a senior, ended his career with 13 wins to tie for 10th on the all-time list. Joining Lee and Stepan as All-NWC picks last season were Second Team choices Brandon Simon (So., RHP) and Brandon Chinn (Fr., 1B). Four Bearcats were named Honorable Mention All-NWC. They were Bloom, Torgerson, Blake Paisley (Jr., RHP) and Parker Johnson (So., RHP). Simon and Paisley topped the pitching staff in wins and ERA. Simon achieved a 7-3 record and led the team in wins. He maintained a 2.31 ERA and limited hitters to a .227 average. Paisley ranked first with a 2.21 ERA to go with a 5-1 record. With a solid pitching staff, the Bearcats were in nearly every game. Whether working one-on-one with a professor, studying abroad, pursuing innovative research, interning with a business or nonprofit, or leading a campus organization, you can hone your creativity, global perspective and critical thinking for a lifetime of success.

Since 1990, ten Willamette faculty members have been named Oregon Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation. They have been honored among the most outstanding undergraduate instructors in the country for excelling in teaching and positively influencing the lives and careers of their students.

WILLAMETTE UNIVERSITY

With an average class size of 14 and a student-to-faculty ratio of 10:1, Willamette provides a personal classroom experience where professors get to know you well, making it easy to find individualized help or ask questions. The life of the Willamette student is active, thought-provoking and focused on community — in the classroom and out. More than 100 student organizations, in addition to numerous athletic, leadership and service opportunities, help you develop your character in addition to your intellect — and have fun, too. Our students are engaged in communities locally and around the world. About 50% earn study abroad credit before they graduate, and 68% of students complete at least one internship while at Willamette. Academics come first at Willamette, but you still have time to compete. Our athletes, both formal and informal, have an enthusiastic network of supporters. Willamette’s NCAA Division III athletics program includes 10 men’s and 10 women’s sports and about 25% of students are DIII student-athletes. Our alumni say their time at Willamette was life-changing, and they credit their education with providing them the expertise they needed for a successful career and life — whether they went on to a job, prestigious graduate program, national fellowship or public service.

Salem, Oregon

Located in the heart of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, the university is situated ideally to access all the benefits of the Pacific Northwest. Gorgeous forests, rivers, mountains and ocean beaches nearby. A relaxed and creative culture. Vibrant arts and music scenes. And, coffee shops on almost every block. Willamette University is in the heart of downtown Salem, Oregon’s capital, a community that is large enough to provide plenty of entertainment, yet personal enough that you’ll usually run into someone you know. When you want to enjoy some of Oregon’s attractions outside Salem, it’s not hard to find a university organized trip or an informal group of friends to join you — whether you plan to snowboard on Mount Hood, catch a concert in Portland or build a bonfire at the coast.

JOHN LEWIS FIELD John Lewis Field at Roy S. “Spec” Keene Stadium is the home of Bearcat baseball. The field is at Bush’s Pasture Park near the WU campus. The overall capacity of 1,000 fans includes chairback seating behind the plate. The natural grass field stays green year-round. In 2009, Willamette laser-leveled the infield and improved the mound and home plate. New lockers were added and two covered and lighted batting cages were installed. When needed, the team can practice on one of Willamette’s two artificial turf fields. Another advantage is that players can lift weights in the team’s conditioning room at John Lewis Field. Other athletic facilities are Cone Field House for men’s and women’s basketball as well as volleyball, Sparks Field for men’s and women’s soccer, McCulloch Stadium for football and track and field, the Willamette Natatorium for swimming, plus the WU Tennis Courts and the WU Softball Field. The Bearcats host cross country meets at Bush’s Pasture Park, while the rowing teams practice on the Willamette River and golfers practice at Illahe Hills Country Club and Creekside Golf Club. WU baseball can practice inside Cone Field House. There are two full-length batting cages and portable mounds for bullpen throwing.

ATHLETIC Facilities

SPEC KEENE STADIUM The Bearcats are forturnate to have their baseball clubhouse right at Spec Keene Stadium. In addition, Willamette players benefit from having the largest baseball clubhouse located in the Pacific Northwest outside of NCAA Division I. At Willamette, the Bearcat clubhouse is below the stadium seating. It features two satellite televisions and can be accessed from Willamette’s dugout at field level. With the clubhouse located at the field, home games really provide a true baseball experience for the Bearcats each season.

The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 84 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College. Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only and dropped out in 2009. The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998.

NCAA Division III is where the true student-athlete studies and competes. The National Collegiate Athletic Association is the main governing body of collegiate sports, dividing levels of classification into three divisions. D3 institutions are largely regarded as leading academic institutions and do not offer athletic scholarships. Still, athletics in D3 is highly competitive. There are over 136,000 athletes at over 430 D3 colleges and universities and each one is studying to earn a valuable degree in preparation for the workplace while playing the sport that he or she loves. For D3 athletes, sports have been an integral part of our lives since our youth. From elementary school through high school, sports have complemented our educational experience. And as college looms, we want to continue playing the sport we love while receiving an education from a first-rate college. A D3 school is that fit.

Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.
