KIP IOANE
Head Coach - 3rd Year Email: kioane@willamette.edu Office Phone: (503) 370-6063
”Two things set us apart as a basketball program: our commitment to building a family atmosphere, and our desire to have that family play an all-out attacking style on the court.” Kip Ioane is in his third year as the head coach of the men’s basketball team at Willamette University. He was previously an assistant coach for the Bearcats for eight seasons. Ioane also played for the Bearcats from 1997-98 through 2000-01. He was a two-year captain and earned four letters while playing at Willamette. He was a finalist for the Josten’s Trophy, given annually to the NCAA Division III men’s basketball player of the year. Ioane earned a B.A. degree from Willamette in 2001 and achieved a Master of Arts in Teaching at WU in 2002. In his first year as head coach, Ioane led the 2009-10 Bearcats to a 9-16 overall record. The team improved during the season as players learned a new system. WU ended the year by going 6-3 in its last nine games. During 2010-11 the Bearcats achieved a 7-18 record. Willamette swept two games from nearby rivals Linfield College and Concordia University and upset Lewis & Clark in the final regular season game. Ioane was All-Conference and All-State in football, basketball and track and field as

an athlete at Billings Skyview High School in Montana. He played in 100 basketball games at Willamette. He contributed to the Bearcats earning a combined record of 54-44 during his four seasons. ”Willamette University and the Bearcat Hoop program raised me to be the man I am today,” Ioane said. “It is my honor to provide that same type of experience as a coach for the players we have today.” Ioane’s wife, Kelly (Sorenson) ’01, MAT ’02, was a star for the WU volleyball and basketball teams. Kip and Kelly are the parents of Lincoln, 4 years old, and Leah, 2 years old.
MIKE PLANK ‘07
Assistant Coach - 4th Year Email: mplank@willamette.edu Office Phone: (503) 370-6063
Mike Plank, who played at Willamette as a student, is in his fourth year as an assistant coach this season. He works on recruiting and has game day and practice duties. At Willamette, he was a four-year letterman in basketball and football, and played baseball for one year. In football, he led the team in receiving in 2005 and 2006. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from WU in 2007. Plank is the director of the mentoring program he started at nearby South Salem High School in 2008. He leads Willamette students in mentoring high school students. He is working to gradually extend the program throughout the Salem-Keizer School District. Plank is from Stockton, Calif., where he attended Franklin High School.
kevin macrae
Assistant Coach - 2nd Year Kevin Macrae is in his second year on Willamette’s coaching staff after six years as an assistant football and basketball coach at McKay High School in Salem. He helped McKay’s basketball team reach the OSAA State quarterfinals twice. In addition, two members of the team were each honored once as the Central Valley Conference Player of the Year. While at McKay, he worked with offensive and defensive systems similar to those used by Kip Ioane at Willamette. He is a valuable assistant coach for the Bearcats due to his previous coaching experience, plus his familiarity with Willamette’s offensive and defensive schemes. His wife, Mallory, is a Willamette graduate.

Where we’ve been
Where we’re going
Willamette won several games with exciting finishes in 2010-11. Three of the wins were earned in the closing seconds of play.
The Bearcats and Head Coach Kip Ioane, now in his third year, will begin 2011-12 with 11 returning players, including three returning starters. The returning starters are Taylor Mounts (Sr., W/P), Ryan Meehan (Sr., W) and Terrell Malley (Jr., G).
On Nov. 18, WU trailed by one point after Concordia hit a three with seven seconds to go. Ryan Meehan scored with two seconds left for an 89-88 win. When the two teams met again, WU won on a 3-pointer by Taylor Mounts as time expired, 86-84. WU trailed by one point after Concordia sank a free throw with eight seconds remaining. Later, Willamette defeated archrival Linfield on a 3-pointer by Mounts with 1.4 seconds left, 90-88. WU trailed by one point after Linfield scored on a 3-pointer with 10.9 seconds left. WU finished the 2010-11 season with a 7-18 overall record, including 4-12 in the NWC (8th place). The Bearcats averaged 80.3 points per game and ranked 28th in the nation in scoring. Willamette has achieved 1,240 wins since the Bearcats started playing in 1924-25. WU owns a 56.3% all-time winning percentage. The Bearcats won the 1992-93 NAIA Division II National Championship. WU now competes in NCAA Division III.
In addition, Sean Dart (Jr., P), who ranked second in NCAA Division III in field goal shooting at 66.7% in 2010-11, is likely to return from a knee injury. If he can, the Bearcats will have four returning starters. Mounts led WU in scoring last year and was Second Team All-NWC. He led the Bearcats with 20.2 points and 7.9 boards per game. He begins this season with 866 points and 375 rebounds during his career. Last year, Mounts was third in the NWC and 32nd in NCAA Division III in scoring. He was 2nd in the NWC in rebounding. Meehan provided 14.0 points per game in 2010-11. He hit 46 three-pointers and made 74.7% of his free throws (65 of 87). Malley earned 12.9 points per game. He shot 77.5% at the line (55 of 71). In two years at WU, Meehan has tallied 637 points. Malley has scored 539 points. WU must replace guard Robbie Kunke (Sr. in 2010-11), who graduated with a school record 523 assists. He earned 143 assists last season to lead the NWC and rank 22nd nationally with 5.7 assists per game. Trevor Bos (So., G), who saw action in 22 games last year, will start at point guard. He hit 14 of 38 threes last season (36.8%). Other top returners are Avery Manu (So., W), Oliver Hughes (Jr., W), Alex Hansen (So., G) and Noah Ripley (So., P). Manu and Hughes played in 25 games, Hansen played in 21 and Ripley played in 17. The Bearcats will feature a high-pressure up-tempo style again this year. It should be another season of high-scoring games with great effort at both ends of the court.

Silverton Hospital The Willamette University sports medicine program provides medical support to our varsity athletes. Athletic trainers focus on two components: service and education. Service includes the evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries suffered by our athletes. It also involves referrals to medical personnel when athletes become injured or ill. The education component is designed for any student interested in athletic training or other medical fields to gain valuable experience working in a clinical setting.
Students achieve experience by covering practices and games, and by working in the treatment centers where they help Willamette’s certified athletic trainers with rehabilitation of injuries. Our athletic training staff works closely with our team physicians from Silverton Hospital, the physical therapist from PT Northwest and the staff at the Bisohop Wellness Center on the WU campus to provide care for our varsity athletes. WILLAMETTE UNIVERSITY
With an average class size of 14 and a student-to-faculty ratio of 10:1, Willamette provides a personal classroom experience where professors get to know you well, making it easy to find individualized help or ask questions. The life of the Willamette student is active, thought-provoking and focused on community — in the classroom and out. More than 100 student organizations, in addition to numerous athletic, leadership and service opportunities, help you develop your character in addition to your intellect — and have fun, too. Our students are engaged in communities locally and around the world. About 50% earn study abroad credit before they graduate, and 68% of students complete at least one internship while at Willamette. Academics come first at Willamette, but you still have time to compete. Our athletes, both formal and informal, have an enthusiastic network of supporters. Willamette’s NCAA Division III athletics program includes 10 men’s and 10 women’s sports and about 25% of students are DIII student-athletes. Our alumni say their time at Willamette was life-changing, and they credit their education with providing them the expertise they needed for a successful career and life — whether they went on to a job, prestigious graduate program, national fellowship or public service.
Salem, Oregon
Located in the heart of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, the university is situated ideally to access all the benefits of the Pacific Northwest. Gorgeous forests, rivers, mountains and ocean beaches nearby. A relaxed and creative culture. Vibrant arts and music scenes. And, coffee shops on almost every block. Willamette University is in the heart of downtown Salem, Oregon’s capital, a community that is large enough to provide plenty of entertainment, yet personal enough that you’ll usually run into someone you know. When you want to enjoy some of Oregon’s attractions outside Salem, it’s not hard to find a university organized trip or an informal group of friends to join you — whether you plan to snowboard on Mount Hood, catch a concert in Portland or build a bonfire at the coast.

CONE FIELD HOUSE Cone Field House/Gordie James Court is the home of the WU men’s basketball, women’s basketball and volleyball teams. The arena holds 2,500 fans, with plenty of seating on each side of the court. The court was redone and named after former men’s basketball coach Gordie James in 2010 with the new Bearcat logo added at center court. The WU basketball court is connected to the Lestle J. Sparks Center. The Sparks Center includes the Fitness Center, which is available for use by the basketball teams. The Currey Classroom in the Sparks Center is a great location for team meetings and to evaluate player performances on video. Other facilities at WU include Sparks Field, where the men’s and women’s soccer teams play, McCulloch Stadium for football and track and field, John Lewis Field for baseball, the WU Natatorium for swimming, plus the WU Tennis Courts and the WU Softball Field. The Bearcats host cross country meets in Bush’s Pasture Park, the rowing teams practice on the Willamette River, and golfers practice at both Illahe Country Club and Creekside Golf Club.

GORDIE JAMES COURT The game floor at Cone Field House is named after retired Willamette men’s basketball Head Coach Gordie James. In 22 seasons as the Bearcats’ head coach, from 1987-88 until 2008-09, James achieved a 357-230 (.608) record. He also earned a 340-129 (.725) record in 22 years at the high school level, giving him a combined record of 697-359 (.660). The court received its official name during a dedication ceremony on Nov. 20, 2010.
The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 84 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College. Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only and dropped out in 2009. The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998.
NCAA Division III is where the true student-athlete studies and competes. The National Collegiate Athletic Association is the main governing body of collegiate sports, dividing levels of classification into three divisions. D3 institutions are largely regarded as leading academic institutions and do not offer athletic scholarships. Still, athletics in D3 is highly competitive. There are over 136,000 athletes at over 430 D3 colleges and universities and each one is studying to earn a valuable degree in preparation for the workplace while playing the sport that he or she loves. For D3 athletes, sports have been an integral part of our lives since our youth. From elementary school through high school, sports have complemented our educational experience. And as college looms, we want to continue playing the sport we love while receiving an education from a first-rate college. A D3 school is that fit.
Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.
