Willamette University is proud to provide opportunities for student-athletes to attain great accomplishments in athletics and in the classroom. Bearcat athletes excel on their respective teams throughout the year. Several teams have attained postseason success during recent seasons, continuing a history of excellence in Willamette Athletics. These teams and athletes also shine in the classroom. From Academic All-District and Academic All-America selections to several Fulbright, Kemper and NCAA Postgraduate scholarship winners, WU athletes have been honored for their academic achievements. It is this combination, along with a strong commitment to community service and Willamette’s motto, “Not unto ourselves alone are we born,” that makes Bearcat Athletics great.

Where we’ve been

Where we’re going

Willamette University has a tradition in swimming. Since 1976, the Bearcats have competed at national meets in a variety of individual and relay events. Bearcat swimmers have recorded multiple national championships.

The Bearcats will have a young team after the best recruiting year since Head Coach Leslie Shevlin arrived at WU. With five new men and five new women, the Bearcats are young and full of passion and a competitive spirit. Laura Coddington is the only senior this season.

Steve Koga won five national titles for Willamette in the 100-yard freestyle (1980), 50-meter freestyle (1981-82) and 100-meter freestyle (1981-82). Dawn Lien achieved one national championship in the 200-yard butterfly (1980). The WU women’s 200-yard medley relay team won a national title in 1983.

The large freshman class will join an established group of upperclassmen. Coddington provides leadership and experience. She will lead the way in the backstroke events.

Willamette swimming has produced 27 All-Americans from the men’s team (56 awards), plus 39 All-Americans on the women’s team (87 awards). WU has won seven NWC men’s team titles and four NWC women’s team titles.

Also leading the women’s squad will be juniors Lauren Ballinger and Kayla Kosaki. Ballinger will swim in the sprint freestyle and will anchor the relays. Kosaki is versatile and will swim butterfly and backstroke for the Bearcats.

Since 2009, Head Coach Leslie Shevlin and the Bearcats have worked hard to honor the tradition by building a competitive team with a strong culture. WU has maintained academic excellence while achieving success in the NWC.

Juniors Ian McGahan and Austin Williams will bring leadership to help the young men’s team stay focused. McGahan will swim the butterfly and middle distance while Williams will swim distance freestyle events.

In 2010, senior Gwen Schulze earned All-NWC honors by placing second in the 100 butterfly and third in the 200 backstroke. The women’s 400 medley relay team, comprised of Schulze, Hanna Connett, Kara Koetje and Lauren Ballinger, surprised the field by moving into a fourth place finish from the eighth position. The team saw 95% personal-best times during the meet.

Sophomores Erin Parkinson, Chris Whitehead and Susie Barnes return to lead the breaststroke. Parkinson will challenge the Northwest Conference in the 1,650 after a ninth place finish at the 2011 NWC Championships.

Last year the Bearcats added talent and continued to develop a strong team atmosphere and work ethic. Dual meets were full of fast times from freshmen Susie Barnes, Erin Parkinson and Chris Whitehead. Upperclassmen continued to improve and the Bearcats went to the NWC Championships ready to race.

This year’s freshmen on the women’s team are Kersey Bars, Ann Hues, Summer Elias, Julia Wehe and Hope Nelson, a sophomore academically. Bars and Hues will make an impact in the backstroke, while Elias and Wehe will swim breaststroke and sprint freestyle. Nelson will compete in everything from sprint freestyle on relays to the 1,650 at the NWC meet.

Lauren Ballinger (So.) provided a strong performance in the 200 freestyle, as she finished seventh in 1:59.58. Erin Parkinson (Fr.) had a standout effort in the 1,650 freestyle, placing ninth with a time of 18:47.32.

Among freshmen on the men’s team, Sean Piper will lead the way in the backstroke and the individual medley. Piper brings a long tradition of fast swimming from the King Aquatic Club in Seattle. Zander Le Bel and Alex Burkhart will swim the distance free and join Piper in the individual medley.

The breaststroke was strong for the Bearcats, with Parkinson and Whitehead swimming in the 100 and 200 finals. WU produced 95% personal-best times.

Marshall Balderston and Aran Johnson have talent and speed. They will compete in the sprint freestyle and will help on relays this season.

A tremendous honor was achieved by three Bearcat athletes who were named Academic All-Conference. Whitehead, Austin Williams (So.) and Kayla Kosaki (So.) earned the honor with a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher.

WU will take a winter training trip to San Diego, Calif., which will include a meet with Soka University. The Bearcats will travel to the Northwest Invitational in November and to the NWC Championships in February.

WILLAMETTE UNIVERSITY

Since 1990, ten Willamette faculty members have been named Oregon Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation. They have been honored among the most outstanding undergraduate instructors in the country for excelling in teaching and positively influencing the lives and careers of their students. With an average class size of 14 and a student-to-faculty ratio of 10:1, Willamette provides a personal classroom experience where professors get to know you well, making it easy to find individualized help or ask questions. The life of the Willamette student is active, thought-provoking and focused on community — in the classroom and out. More than 100

student organizations, in addition to numerous athletic, leadership and service opportunities, help you develop your character in addition to your intellect — and have fun, too. Our students are engaged in communities locally and around the world. About 50% earn study abroad credit before they graduate, and 68% of students complete at least one internship while at Willamette. Academics come first at Willamette, but you still have time to compete. Our athletes have an enthusiastic network of supporters. Willamette’s NCAA Division III athletics program includes 10 men’s and 10 women’s sports, and about 25% of students are DIII student-athletes. Our alumni say their time at Willamette was life-changing, and they credit their education with providing them the expertise they needed for a successful career and life — whether they went on to a job, prestigious graduate program, national fellowship or public service.

Silverton Hospital

Willamette has treatment centers at Sparks Center and McCulloch Stadium. These facilities are staffed by three full-time athletic trainers and several work study students. Students involved in the athletic training program gain valuable work experience by covering practices and games, as well as working in the treatment centers during the academic year. Our team physicians call Silverton Hospital their home and our physical therapy contractor is PT Northwest. From our three full-time athletic trainers to our doctors and physical therapists, Willamette athletes receive top notch medical care.

NORTHWEST CONFERENCE Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College. Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978.

The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 85 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth.

Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only and dropped out in 2009. The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.

NCAA Division III NCAA Division III is where the true student-athlete studies and competes. The National Collegiate Athletic Association is the main governing body of collegiate sports, dividing levels of classification into three divisions. D3 institutions are largely regarded as leading academic institutions and do not offer athletic scholarships. Still, athletics in D3 is highly competitive. There are over 136,000 athletes at over 430 D3 colleges and universities and each one is studying to earn a valuable degree in preparation for the workplace while playing the sport that he or she loves. For D3 athletes, sports have been an integral part of our lives since our youth. From elementary school through high school, sports have complemented our educational experience. And as college looms, we want to continue playing the sport we love while receiving an education from a first-rate college. A D3 school is that fit.
