The Bearcats earned wins against both Pacific University and Pacific Lutheran University in NWC action. Four losses were by six points or less. In high school, Lapray was the 1989-90 Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of

Where we’ve been
Where we’re going
Willamette achieved one of the top comebacks in recent years when the Bearcats rallied late to defeat Pacific University, 58-57 on Feb. 5, 2011.
The Willamette University Bearcats enter the 2011-12 season with a total of eight returning players, including three seniors and two starters.
The Bearcats trailed 49-39 with 3:05 remaining. WU scored 19 points and hit five 3-pointers the rest of the way.
Kaileigh Westermann (Sr., F) is the team’s top returning scorer, after averaging 11.4 points per game last season. She earned 9.0 rebounds per game to lead WU and to rank third in the Northwest Conference.
WU’s success from behind the arc was important because Pacific converted 8 of 10 free throws during the rally. Pacific scored its last point when Erica Schultz hit the first of two free throws with four seconds left for a 57-55 lead. Kaileigh Westermann hauled down the rebound and passed to Sophie Wilson, who crossed mid-court before launching the winning shot from 33 feet just before the buzzer sounded. The top scorer in 2010-11 was senior Alex Zennan at 12.0 points per game. Zennan finished fifth on the Bearcats’ career scoring list with 1,123 points. Willamette ended the season with a 3-20 record (2-14 NWC). The Bearcats allowed just 74.7 points per game and held 12 opponents to 73 points or less. The Bearcats have won 11 conference titles over the years. WU won five in a row from 1982-83 through 1986-87 and have claimed back-to-back titles an additional three times.
Maya McFaddin (Sr., W) scored 4.0 points per game and hauled down 2.8 rebounds per game. Westermann played in all 23 games with 22 starts. McFaddin competed in a total of 22 games and received 21 starts. Forward Dora Rabih also returns for her senior year. Rabih received playing time in 21 games in 2010-11 after transferring from Arizona Western College. Other top returning players for WU are junior guard Sophie Wilson, sophomore wing Mackenzie Lamson and sophomore point guard Breanne Faehnrich. Wilson played in all 23 games in 2010-11 and provided the winning 3-pointer at the buzzer in Willamette’s 58-57 victory over Pacific University on Feb. 5, 2011. Lamson saw action in 21 games, while averaging 5.3 points per contest. Faehnrich also competed in 21 games. She shot 76.2% at the free throw line by sinking 16 of 21 attempts. The Bearcats are in their third year under Head Coach Anne Lapray. This season, Lapray has a group of nine freshmen who will join the eight returning players. The freshmen are very athletic. They will battle for significant playing time. Lapray’s experienced returning athletes and talented freshmen create flexibility on offense and defense. They will battle each opponent from start to finish.

Silverton Hospital The Willamette University sports medicine program provides medical support to our varsity athletes. Athletic trainers focus on two components: service and education. Service includes the evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries suffered by our athletes. It also involves referrals to medical personnel when athletes become injured or ill. The education component is designed for any student interested in athletic training or other medical fields to gain valuable experience working in a clinical setting.
Students achieve experience by covering practices and games, and by working in the treatment centers where they help Willamette’s certified athletic trainers with rehabilitation of injuries. Our athletic training staff works closely with our team physicians from Silverton Hospital, the physical therapist from PT Northwest and the staff at the Bishop Wellness Center on the WU campus to provide care for our varsity athletes. WILLAMETTE UNIVERSITY
With an average class size of 14 and a student-to-faculty ratio of 10:1, Willamette provides a personal classroom experience where professors get to know you well, making it easy to find individualized help or ask questions. The life of the Willamette student is active, thought-provoking and focused on community — in the classroom and out. More than 100 student organizations, in addition to numerous athletic, leadership and service opportunities, help you develop your character in addition to your intellect — and have fun, too. Our students are engaged in communities locally and around the world. About 50% earn study abroad credit before they graduate, and 68% of students complete at least one internship while at Willamette. Academics come first at Willamette, but you still have time to compete. Our athletes, both formal and informal, have an enthusiastic network of supporters. Willamette’s NCAA Division III athletics program includes 10 men’s and 10 women’s sports and about 25% of students are DIII student-athletes. Our alumni say their time at Willamette was life-changing, and they credit their education with providing them the expertise they needed for a successful career and life — whether they went on to a job, prestigious graduate program, national fellowship or public service.
Salem, Oregon
Located in the heart of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, the university is situated ideally to access all the benefits of the Pacific Northwest. Gorgeous forests, rivers, mountains and ocean beaches nearby. A relaxed and creative culture. Vibrant arts and music scenes. And, coffee shops on almost every block. Willamette University is in the heart of downtown Salem, Oregon’s capital, a community that is large enough to provide plenty of entertainment, yet personal enough that you’ll usually run into someone you know. When you want to enjoy some of Oregon’s attractions outside Salem, it’s not hard to find a university organized trip or an informal group of friends to join you — whether you plan to snowboard on Mount Hood, catch a concert in Portland or build a bonfire at the coast.

CONE FIELD HOUSE Cone Field House/Gordie James Court is the home of the WU women’s basketball, men’s basketball and volleyball teams. The arena holds 2,500 fans, with plenty of seating on each side of the court. The court was redone and named after former men’s basketball coach Gordie James in 2010 with the new Bearcat logo added at center court. The WU basketball court is connected to the Lestle J. Sparks Center. The Sparks Center includes the Fitness Center, which is available for use by the basketball teams. The Currey Classroom in the Sparks Center is a great location for team meetings and to evaluate player performances on video. Other facilities at WU include Sparks Field, where the men’s and women’s soccer teams play, McCulloch Stadium for football and track and field, John Lewis Field for baseball, the WU Natatorium for swimming, plus the WU Tennis Courts and the WU Softball Field. The Bearcats host cross country meets in Bush’s Pasture Park, the rowing teams practice on the Willamette River, and golfers practice at both Illahe Country Club and Creekside Golf Club.

GORDIE JAMES COURT The game floor at Cone Field House is named after retired Willamette men’s basketball Head Coach Gordie James. In 22 seasons as the Bearcats’ head coach, from 1987-88 until 2008-09, James achieved a 357-230 (.608) record. He also earned a 340-129 (.725) record in 22 years at the high school level, giving him a combined record of 697-359 (.660). The court received its official name during a dedication ceremony on Nov. 20, 2010.
The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 84 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College. Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only and dropped out in 2009. The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998.
NCAA Division III is where the true student-athlete studies and competes. The National Collegiate Athletic Association is the main governing body of collegiate sports, dividing levels of classification into three divisions. D3 institutions are largely regarded as leading academic institutions and do not offer athletic scholarships. Still, athletics in D3 is highly competitive. There are over 136,000 athletes at over 430 D3 colleges and universities and each one is studying to earn a valuable degree in preparation for the workplace while playing the sport that he or she loves. For D3 athletes, sports have been an integral part of our lives since our youth. From elementary school through high school, sports have complemented our educational experience. And as college looms, we want to continue playing the sport we love while receiving an education from a first-rate college. A D3 school is that fit.
Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.
