Bearcat athletes excel on their respective teams throughout the year. Several teams have attained postseason success during recent seasons, continuing a history of excellence in Willamette Athletics. These teams and athletes also shine in the classroom. From Academic All-District and Academic All-America selections to several Fulbright, Kemper and NCAA Postgraduate scholarship winners, WU athletes have been honored for their academic achievements. It is this combination, along with a strong commitment to community service and Willamette’s motto, “Not unto ourselves alone are we born,” that makes Bearcat Athletics great. The 2012 Willamette University Men’s Soccer Media Guide was written and edited by Robert McKinney, athletics communications director, and designed by Christopher Sabato, graphic design specialist. Help provided by athletics communications assistants John Lind, Timothy Walsh, Brandon Chinn, Aly Croney and Ana Sayavedra. Lloyd Fobi
Head Coach - 2nd Year Email: lfobi@willamette.edu Office Phone: (503) 375-5428
”We are redefining who we are ... And that comes from hard work, both from the coaches’ side and from the players’ side, putting high demands on both the players and myself in attaining those goals.” Lloyd Fobi is in his second year as the head coach of the Willamette University men’s soccer team. Prior to arriving at WU, Fobi was an assistant men’s soccer coach at Corban University for a year and a half. He also has been a coach with the Oregon Olympic Development Program.
“My experience has really been seeing how you develop a team ... understanding that blueprint for success that is needed in building a program,” Foby added. He has already started helping the Bearcats make progress through his own approach to the game.
Last year, the Bearcats achieved a 6-9-2 overall record, including a 5-8-1 mark in the Northwest Conference. The Bearcats defeated eventual NWC co-champion Pacific Lutheran University, 2 -1, in Tacoma and defeated nearby archrival Linfield College twice by 3-0 margins.
“We are redefining who we are,” Fobi said. “And that comes from hard work, both from the coaches’ side and from the players’ side ... putting high demands on both the players and myself in attaining those goals.”
As a college player, Fobi competed for Oregon State University in Corvallis, Ore. He played on two OSU teams that were nationally ranked (2003, 2005) and helped the Beavers reach the NCAA Tournament in 2003. “It’s a different angle looking at the game from a coach’s perspective ... you have to look at it from the whole picture, what the final goal will be and how to get there. How do you build each day to get to that?,” Fobi said.

HEAD COAC H
Fobi wants to build a team that works hard and sets high goals and standards. Willamette competes in the Northwest Conference and is a member of NCAA Division III. “Our goal is to be the best team in our conference,” Fobi commented. “We will be a blue collar team. That is what we have to be to reach our goals. It’s how you carry yourself ... it’s working hard, but working smart.”
JARED RUST
Assistant Coach - 2nd Year Email: jrust@willamette.edu Office Phone: (503) 375-5428

He played two years at Simpson before transferring to Corban University for two seasons. After completing his eligibility, Rust became an assistant coach at Corban. He has earned a degree from Corban in Business Management. Rust and his wife, Morgan, live in the Salem area.
SIEGFRIED WUTTE Assistant Coach - 2nd Year
Siegfried Wutte is in his 2nd year as an assistant coach with the Willamette men’s soccer team. Previously, he was head coach at Central HS in Independence, Ore., for three years. Wutte holds a “C” coaching license from the USSF and brings experience as a coach at the club and high school levels. He played competitive soccer as a youngster, but began horseback riding at age 16 and became a horse trainer in his native Austria. 2011 SEASON REVIEW
2012 SEASON OUTLOOK
In their first season under Head Coach Lloyd Fobi, the Bearcats posted a 6-9-2 overall record, including 5-8-1 in the Northwest Conference. It was Willamette’s best record since 2003, when WU went 7-8-2 (6-6 NWC).
The Bearcats enter the 2012 season with great confidence for an exciting year with the return of five seniors and the addition of a talented freshman class.
Perhaps Willamette’s biggest win of the season came on Sept. 18 at Pacific Lutheran. The Bearcats defeated the Lutes 2-1, handing the eventual NWC co-champions one of their two losses in NWC action. Among the other Bearcat victories were three road wins and two sweeps of NWC foes. The Bearcats outscored George Fox University 3-0 and 3-2 en route to a season sweep of the Bruins. Willamette capped off its season with a 3-0 road against Linfield College. WU also defeated the Wildcats 3-0 in Salem earlier in the season. After missing the 2010 season due to injury Erik Kaufman topped the WU scoring chart in 2011. He finished the year with 7 goals and 4 assists for 18 total points. He started all 17 games. Adan Vazquez and Mike McGrew tied for second with 16 points each. Both players scored 6 goals and 4 assists. Alfredo Zuniga started all 17 games in goal for WU. He recorded 59 saves and earned a 1.88 goals against average.
Seniors for Willamette this year are Erik Kaufman at forward, Mike McGrew in the midfield, Etienne Galbreath and Patrick Yagi on defense and Bradley Eckerson in goal. They provide Willamette with a great level of experience. Five juniors and four sophomores also will be in action for WU this season. A group of 16 freshman completes the roster. Kaufman begins the year with 22 career goals and 50 career points. He has led Willamette in scoring in three different seasons (2008, 2009, 2011). He tallied a career-high nine goals in 2009. McGrew is Willamette’s top playmaker in the midfield. He can make quality passes on offensive restarts and has the strength to provide lengthy throw-ins. Both McGrew and juniora Trevor Jensen and Adan Vazquez are skilled at moving past defenders. The Bearcats will look for them to establish control in the offensive half of the field. Galbreath and Yagi give WU strength on the back line, while Eckerson provides a vocal and talented presence in goal. Other key experienced players include forward Will O’Neil and defenders Kevin Martin, Robin Hryciuk, Luke Falcone and Ryan Ptacek. Freshmen who will battle to start this year are forward Yazan Hishmeh and defender Sebastian Mortimer. Transfer Adam Lewis. (So.) also will seek a spot in the lineup Other freshmen who can make an impact are defender Sam Gonzalez, midfielder Austin Jacobsen, forwards Tyler Yates and Sam Zanetta, and goalie Brayden Calder.

Service includes the evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries suffered by our athletes. It also involves referrals to medical personnel when athletes become injured or ill. The education component is designed for any student interested in athletic training or other medical fields to gain valuable experience working in a clinical setting.
Dr. David Thorsett WU Team Physician
Students achieve experience by covering practices and games, and by working in the treatment centers where they help Willamette’s certified athletic trainers with rehabilitation of injuries. Our athletic training staff works closely with our team physicians from Silverton Hospital, the physical therapist from PT Northwest and the staff at the Bisohop Wellness Center on the WU campus to provide care for our varsity athletes. Whether working one-on-one with a professor, studying abroad, pursuing innovative research, interning with a business or nonprofit, or leading a campus organization, you can hone your creativity, global perspective and critical thinking for a lifetime of success.
Since 1990, ten Willamette faculty members have been named Oregon Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation. They have been honored among the most outstanding undergraduate instructors in the country for excelling in teaching and positively influencing the lives and careers of their students.

WILLAMETTE UNIVERSITY
With an average class size of 14 and a student-to-faculty ratio of 10:1, Willamette provides a personal classroom experience where professors get to know you well, making it easy to find individualized help or ask questions. The life of the Willamette student is active, thought-provoking and focused on community — in the classroom and out. More than 100 student organizations, in addition to numerous athletic, leadership and service opportunities, help you develop your character in addition to your intellect — and have fun, too. Our students are engaged in communities locally and around the world. About 50% earn study abroad credit before they graduate, and 68% of students complete at least one internship while at Willamette. Academics come first at Willamette, but you still have time to compete. Our athletes, both formal and informal, have an enthusiastic network of supporters. Willamette’s NCAA Division III athletics program includes 10 men’s and 10 women’s sports and about 25% of students are DIII student-athletes. Our alumni say their time at Willamette was life-changing, and they credit their education with providing them the expertise they needed for a successful career and life — whether they went on to a job, prestigious graduate program, national fellowship or public service.
Salem, Oregon
Located in the heart of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, the university is situated ideally to access all the benefits of the Pacific Northwest. Gorgeous forests, rivers, mountains and ocean beaches nearby. A relaxed and creative culture. Vibrant arts and music scenes. And, coffee shops on almost every block. Willamette University is in the heart of downtown Salem, Oregon’s capital, a community that is large enough to provide plenty of entertainment, yet personal enough that you’ll usually run into someone you know. When you want to enjoy some of Oregon’s attractions outside Salem, it’s not hard to find a university organized trip or an informal group of friends to join you — whether you plan to snowboard on Mount Hood, catch a concert in Portland or build a bonfire at the coast.

sparks field The Willamette University soccer teams play home games at Sparks Field, an artificial turf facility on the WU campus. Sparks Field has lights for night games and seats 500 fans. The facility, which features a FieldTurf surface, is one of the top small college fields in the Pacific Northwest. Sparks Field also includes covered seating for both teams and has a public address system. Adjacent to Sparks Field is the Lestle J. Sparks Center. The Sparks Center includes the Fitness Center, which is available for use by the soccer teams. The Currey Classroom in the Sparks Center is a great location for team meetings and to evaluate player performances on video. Other facilities at WU include Cone Field House for volleyball as well as men’s and women’s basketball, McCulloch Stadium for football plus track and field, John Lewis Field for baseball, the WU Natatorium for swimming, plus the WU Tennis Courts and the WU Softball Field. Cross country meets are held in Bush’s Pasture Park, the rowing teams practice on the Willamette River, and golfers practice at both Illahe Country Club and Creekside Golf Club.

sparks CENTER Sparks Field is located next to the Lestle J. Sparks Center. The Sparks Center also has offices for the Department of Athletics and the Department of Exercise Science. There are extra courts on the lower level for basketball and volleyball, plus handball and racquetball courts. There is a weight lifting and fitness center, as well as classrooms and locker rooms.
The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Willamette has won 28 NWC team titles since 2003. Current coaches at WU have achieved NWC Coach of the Year honors 24 times. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 84 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College. Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only and dropped out in 2009.
NCAA Division III is where the true student-athlete studies and competes. The National Collegiate Athletic Association is the main governing body of collegiate sports, dividing levels of classification into three divisions. D3 institutions are largely regarded as leading academic institutions and do not offer athletic scholarships. Still, athletics in D3 is highly competitive. There are over 136,000 athletes at over 430 D3 colleges and universities and each one is studying to earn a valuable degree in preparation for the workplace while playing the sport that he or she loves. For D3 athletes, sports have been an integral part of our lives since our youth. From elementary school through high school, sports have complemented our educational experience. And as college looms, we want to continue playing the sport we love while receiving an education from a first-rate college. A D3 school is that fit.
The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.
