Season Review

Season Outlook

Willamette University entered 2011 with an extremely young volleyball team that included no seniors, four juniors, seven sophomores and four freshmen. That inexperience took its toll, as the Bearcats ended the year at 8-17, 5-11 in the NWC. Even so, Willamette was highly competitive throughout the year and registered a sweep of archrival Linfield College.

In their fifth season under Head Coach Tom Shoji, the Bearcats will field their most experienced team in several years, with multiple seniors on the roster for the first time since 2009.

Junior Madisyn Leenstra led the WU attack, registering 221 kills and an average of 2.83 kills per set. Carly Hargrave and Shannon Waltz, both sophomores, were Willamette’s other top attackers. Hargrave pounded out 121 kills, while Waltz earned 119 kills and a .220 hitting percentage.

Senior hitter Madisyn Leenstra will likely be the focal point of Willamette’s attack, receiving support from fellow seniors Danica Reed and Nicole Mertens, along with juniors Shannon Waltz and Carly Hargrave. This group of hitters has the ability to carry the team. Willamette’s other top returning hitters include junior Kirsten Brehmer and sophomores Elisa Ahern and Taylor Gee. They will provide significant depth at multiple positions.

Sophomore setter Emily Compton notched 724 assists. Her 7.87 assists per set average ranked fourth in the Northwest Conference.

Setter Emily Compton is in her third season as a Bearcat. In her Willamette career, Compton has tallied 1367 assists, for an average of 8.14 assists per set.

Defensively, the Bearcats were led by junior Kathy Lee Glenn, who achieved 413 digs (5.16 avg.). In a Sept. 2 match against Pomona-Pitzer, Glenn registered 49 digs, setting a new Willamette single-match record.

Senior libero/defensive specialist Kathy Lee Glenn will look to build on a breakout 2011 season that saw her lead the team in digs, digs per set, and service aces. Junior Lizzy Balding, who split time with Glenn last year, will aid the Bearcats defensively.

Waltz led the team with 63 blocks, while Hargrave added 62 blocks and a team-high 0.90 blocks per set.

The Bearcats also have added three talented freshmen to the roster this year: outside hitters Macy Hayashi and Mandara Hogarth, and setter Alyssa Workman.

Leenstra and Waltz each were chosen Honorable Mention All-NWC.

Willamette’s schedule this season includes a trip to the 2012 Star Classic, hosted by Dominican University in River Forest, Illinois There, the Bearcats will face off with Dominican, Lakeland College (Wis.), and Greenville University (Illinois). The Northwest Conference schedule gets underway on Sept. 14 with a trip to take on archrival Linfield College. Willamette will close out its regular season on Nov. 3, when George Fox University visits Cone Field House.

Dr. Daniel Schweigert WU Team Physician

The Willamette University sports medicine program provides medical support to our varsity athletes. Athletic trainers focus on two components: service and education. Service includes the evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries suffered by our athletes. It also involves referrals to medical personnel when athletes become injured or ill. The education component is designed for any student interested in athletic training or other medical fields to gain valuable experience working in a clinical setting.

Dr. David Thorsett WU Team Physician

Students achieve experience by covering practices and games, and by working in the treatment centers where they help Willamette’s certified athletic trainers with rehabilitation of injuries. Our athletic training staff works closely with our team physicians from Silverton Hospital, the physical therapist from PT Northwest and the staff at the Bisohop Wellness Center on the WU campus to provide care for our varsity athletes. Since 1990, 10 Willamette faculty members have been named Oregon Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation. They have been honored among the most outstanding undergraduate instructors in the country for excelling in teaching and positively influencing the lives and careers of their students.

WILLAMETTE UNIVERSITY

With an average class size of 14 and a student-to-faculty ratio of 10:1, Willamette provides a personal classroom experience where professors get to know you well, making it easy to find individualized help or ask questions. The life of the Willamette student is active, thought-provoking and focused on community — in the classroom and out. More than 100 student organizations, in addition to numerous athletic, leadership and service opportunities, help you develop your character in addition to your intellect — and have fun, too. Our students are engaged in communities locally and around the world. About 50% earn study abroad credit before they graduate, and 68% of students complete at least one internship while at Willamette. Academics come first at Willamette, but you still have time to compete. Our athletes, both formal and informal, have an enthusiastic network of supporters. Willamette’s NCAA Division III athletics program includes 10 men’s and 10 women’s sports and about 25% of students are DIII student-athletes. Our alumni say their time at Willamette was life-changing, and they credit their education with providing them the expertise they needed for a successful career and life — whether they went on to a job, prestigious graduate program, national fellowship or public service.

Salem, Oregon

Located in the heart of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, the university is situated ideally to access all the benefits of the Pacific Northwest. Gorgeous forests, rivers, mountains and ocean beaches nearby. A relaxed and creative culture. Vibrant arts and music scenes. And, coffee shops on almost every block. Willamette University is in the heart of downtown Salem, Oregon’s capital, a community that is large enough to provide plenty of entertainment, yet personal enough that you’ll usually run into someone you know. When you want to enjoy some of Oregon’s attractions outside Salem, it’s not hard to find a university organized trip or an informal group of friends to join you — whether you plan to snowboard on Mount Hood, catch a concert in Portland or build a bonfire at the coast.

The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Willamette has won 28 NWC team titles since 2003. Current coaches at WU have achieved NWC Coach of the Year honors 24 times. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 84 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College. Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only and dropped out in 2009.

NCAA Division III is where the true student-athlete studies and competes. The National Collegiate Athletic Association is the main governing body of collegiate sports, dividing levels of classification into three divisions. D3 institutions are largely regarded as leading academic institutions and do not offer athletic scholarships. Still, athletics in D3 is highly competitive. There are over 136,000 athletes at over 430 D3 colleges and universities and each one is studying to earn a valuable degree in preparation for the workplace while playing the sport that he or she loves. For D3 athletes, sports have been an integral part of our lives since our youth. From elementary school through high school, sports have complemented our educational experience. And as college looms, we want to continue playing the sport we love while receiving an education from a first-rate college. A D3 school is that fit.

The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.
