BEARCAT FRESHMEN
willamettE ready for 2013 season
TYSON GIZA It’s an exciting time for the Willamette University baseball team, as the Bearcats begin the season with five returning starters in the field. Two starting pitchers also return, along with the three most experienced relievers. Seven of the top 10 hitters are back. Willamette will benefit from its returning starters and from quality freshmen who can compete right away at many positions. The roster provides Head Coach Aaron Swick, now in his fifth season, with plenty of versatility and depth throughout the lineup. Even so, the Bearcats need to replace the contributions of six seniors from a year ago. Outfielder Mitch Rowan completed his WU career by leading the 2012 team with a .342 batting average, 11 doubles, 10 homers, 34 runs and 40 RBIs. He was 10 for 10 on stolen bases. He was Second Team All-West Region and Second Team All-NWC. Rowan earned fourth place on WU’s all-time list with a .356 career batting average. He recorded 144 hits, scored 103 runs and achieved 123 RBIs. He ranked third at WU with 27 homers and was fifth in RBIs. He was 26 of 28 on stolen bases. Catcher Dylan Summers achieved a .340 batting average. He easrned a hit in 19 of his last 20 games, including a 13-game hitting streak. He was named First Team All-NWC. Seven of the next eight hitters from 2012 have returned, led by senior center fielder Tyson Giza, who hit .329 last spring. Ben Petersen (Sr., C) batted .320 a year ago. Tommy Kawamura (Jr., 2B) was Honorable Mention All-NWC after playing shortstop in 2012. He hit .279, led the team with 36 starts and contributed a team-high 108 assists. WU ranked second in NCAA Division III last year with 0.95 homers per game (35 in 37 games), was 21st in walks (190) and was 38th in stolen bases per game (80, 2.16 avg.). The Bearcats were 14-23 in 2012, including 9-15 in the NWC (6th place). Willamette played the 18th most difficult Division III schedule according to Boyd’s World. “We only lost three everyday players from a team that scored a lot of runs,” Swick said. “Our team speed and defense have both improved significantly. We have a ton of talent offensively, and great depth at each position. The pitching staff is young, but has a competitive edge and throws strikes.”

Infield The infield should be a strength for the Bearcats this season. WU has several returning starters, plus a group of skilled newcomers. At first base, Brandon Chinn (Jr.) and Corbin Bennett (Fr.) are the top contenders to start for the Bearcats. Chinn played in 23 games with 17 starts last season. He earned a solid .985 fielding percentage and ranked second on the team with 124 putouts. Gordie Clary (Fr.) and Tyler Olson (So.) will provide depth at first base. Kawamura moves from shortstop back to second base, where he played in 36 games two years ago. Last season, he was third on the team with 30 runs scored, and went 9 for 10 on stolen bases. Tanner Oates (So.) also is set to contribute at second base. Joining Kawamura as a starter in the middle of the infield will be freshman Matt Hirsch. According to Swick, Hirsch and Kawamura have the potential to be the top infield duo in the NWC Hunter Gallant (So.) is will start at third base. He batted .279 as a freshman last season. He played in 36 games (34 starts), and finished with eight doubles and three homers. “Hunter got better every week while playing a ton as a freshman (at second and third),” Swick noted. “He hit .390 in his last 10 games.” Austin Hagarty (Fr., IF) and Shea Harrison (Fr., IF/RHP) will give the Bearcats versatility and quality depth on the infield. Both players can contribute at several positions.
Outfield Willamette has significant speed and athletic ability throughout the outfield. Giza will be a four-year starter for the Bearcats in center field, where he can cover plenty of ground. While hitting .329 in 2012, he smacked 10 doubles, scored 32 runs and earned 23 RBIs. Tosh Semlacher (Jr.), who played mostly at third base last year, will move to left field. He batted .272 a year ago, while scoring 20 runs and going 13 for 14 on stolen bases. “Tosh has transitioned really well to the outfield and he is a threat in multiple ways offensively,” Swick said. Also challenging for starting positions will be Rolenn Himuro (So.) and Peter Davis (Fr., OF/RHP). Himuro hit .279 last year, while scoring 16 runs. “I envision us giving up less hits this year because of the speed in the outfield,” Swick commented. Andrew Wilson (So.), who hit three homers in 19 games as a freshman, and Bryan Afzali (So.), who played in 12 games, will provided quality depth behind the outfield starters.
Catching Petersen missed part of 2012 due to injury, but platooned behind the plate and saw action in 19 games (13 starts). He brings experience to the Bearcats’ group of catchers.
PAGE 20
2013 season outlook
“He has done a great job of leading the pitching staff, and offensively he has been making great strides in practice,” Swick said. Tiras Koon (So.) played catcher a year ago and hit .265 at the plate. Brad Breier (So.) also will contend for playing time at catcher.
Designated Hitter The Bearcats will fill the designated hitter position during each game with one of the top players who is not starting at his primary position. Top contenders for designated hitter when not playing in the field are Koon, Peter Davis and Bennett.
brandon simon
Pitching Willamette returns two of the three primary pitchers from last year’s starting rotation. They are Brandon Simon (Sr., RHP) and Peter Hoffman (So., RHP). Simon finished the season with a 4-5 record and 24 strikeouts in 57 innings pitched. Hoffman achieved a 5.17 earned run average and struck out 32 batters in 54 innings. Several pitchers, including newcomer Albert Garcia (Fr., LHP), will battle for the third spot in the Bearcats’ starting rotation. The bullpen will feature Parker Johnson (Sr., RHP) as the closer, along with returning relief pitchers Henry Harrison (Sr., LHP) and Zach Holcomb (So., RHP). In addition, a group of talented newcomers are ready to contribute on the mound. Harrison finished with a 2.92 ERA last spring in a team-high 13 appearances. Holcomb attained a 3.21 ERA in eight appearances. Top newcomers include Jordan Ramp (Fr., RHP), Evan Giddings (Fr., RHP), Nate Balk (Fr., RHP), Jackson Watt (Fr., RHP) and Travis Wilson (Fr., LHP). Field players who are also strong pitchers are Peter Davis and Shea Harrison. Depth at pitcher will be supplied by Garrett Davis (Jr., RHP) and Jake Jones (Sr., RHP). “Anytime you can return two-thirds of your rotation and three of your most experienced relievers you have a good foundation for success,” Swick said.

The Willamette University sports medicine program provides medical support to our varsity athletes. Athletic trainers focus on two components: service and education. Service includes the evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries suffered by our athletes. It also involves referrals to medical personnel when athletes become injured or ill. The education component is designed for any student interested in athletic training or other medical fields to gain valuable experience working in a clinical setting.

2012 Season Review Willamette University concluded the 2012 baseball season with a 14-23 overall record. The Bearcats were 9-15 in Northwest Conference play, finishing in sixth place. Willamette played the 18th hardest schedule in NCAA Division III last year according to Boyd’s World, but remained competitive, losing seven games by just one run. The Bearcats continued their trend of finishing the season strong under Head Coach Aaron Swick. Willamette won two of its final three NWC series in 2012, while earning non-conference wins over Pacific and Corban during that same stretch.

For his career, Rowan earned a .356 career batting average (fourth all-time at Willamette), 27 home runs (third), and 123 RBIs (fifth). Despite missing most of his junior year due to injury, Rowan was selected 2012 and 2011 Preseason All-America by D3baseball.com. He earned First Team All-West Region and First Team All-NWC honors in 2010. Dylan Summers (C) received First Team All-NWC recognition in 2012. He ranked second on the team with a .340 batting average, and recorded a 13-game hitting streak during the season. He hit safely in 19 of his final 20 games at Willamette, batting .413 during that stretch. Joining Summers and Rowan as All-NWC picks last season were Honorable Mention selections Sky Kelley (Jr., OF) and Tommy Kawamura (So., SS). Willamette ended the season with a .279 team batting average. After Rowan and Summers, the Bearcats had three other consistent starters hit over .300. Tyson Giza (Jr., CF) hit .329, Kelley hit .325, and Ben Petersen (Jr., C) hit .320.
The Bearcats’ potent offense finished the year ranked second in Division III in home runs per game (0.95), and sixth in total home runs (35). WU also ranked in the nation’s top 50 in walks (21st, 190) and stolen bases per game (38th, 2.16). At the conference level, the Bearcats led the NWC in home runs, triples, walks, stolen bases, and slugging percentage. Willamette graduated six seniors at the end of the 2012 season, including two highly decorated players. Mitch Rowan (RF) led the 2012 Bearcats with a .342 batting average, 11 doubles,
Defensively, Willamette posted a solid .958 fielding percentage, committing just 59 errors over the course of the season to rank third-best in the NWC. Tiras Koon (Fr., C) led the team in putouts with 137, closely followed by Brandon Chinn (So., 1B), who had 137. Willamette’s young pitching staff posted a team ERA of 6.36, but relievers Henry Harrison (Jr., LHP) and Zach Holcomb (Fr., RHP) were bright spots out of the bullpen. Harrison led WU in appearances with 13, posting a 2.92 ERA in 24.2 innings pitched. Holcomb, whose 3.21 ERA ranked second on the Bearcats’ roster, pitched 14 innings while holding opponents to a team-low .226 batting average.

WILLAMETTE UNIVERSITY
With an average class size of 14 and a student-to-faculty ratio of 10:1, Willamette provides a personal classroom experience where professors get to know you well, making it easy to find individualized help or ask questions. The life of the Willamette student is active, thought-provoking and focused on community — in the classroom and out. More than 100 student organizations, in addition to numerous athletic, leadership and service opportunities, help you develop your character in addition to your intellect — and have fun, too. Our students are engaged in communities locally and around the world. About 50% earn study abroad credit before they graduate, and 68% of students complete at least one internship while at Willamette. Academics come first at Willamette, but you still have time to compete. Our athletes, both formal and informal, have an enthusiastic network of supporters. Willamette’s NCAA Division III athletics program includes 10 men’s and 10 women’s sports and about 25% of students are DIII student-athletes. Our alumni say their time at Willamette was life-changing, and they credit their education with providing them the expertise they needed for a successful career and life — whether they went on to a job, prestigious graduate program, national fellowship or public service.
Salem, Oregon
Located in the heart of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, the university is situated ideally to access all the benefits of the Pacific Northwest. Gorgeous forests, rivers, mountains and ocean beaches nearby. A relaxed and creative culture. Vibrant arts and music scenes. And, coffee shops on almost every block. Willamette University is in the heart of downtown Salem, Oregon’s capital, a community that is large enough to provide plenty of entertainment, yet personal enough that you’ll usually run into someone you know. When you want to enjoy some of Oregon’s attractions outside Salem, it’s not hard to find a university organized trip or an informal group of friends to join you — whether you plan to snowboard on Mount Hood, catch a concert in Portland or build a bonfire at the coast.

JOHN LEWIS FIELD John Lewis Field at Roy S. “Spec” Keene Stadium is the home of Bearcat baseball. The field is at Bush’s Pasture Park near the WU campus. The overall capacity of 1,000 fans includes chairback seating behind the plate. The natural grass field stays green year-round. In 2009, Willamette laser-leveled the infield and improved the mound and home plate. New lockers were added and two covered and lighted batting cages were installed. When needed, the team can practice on one of Willamette’s two artificial turf fields. Another advantage is that players can lift weights in the team’s conditioning room at John Lewis Field. Other athletic facilities are Cone Field House for men’s and women’s basketball as well as volleyball, Sparks Field for men’s and women’s soccer, McCulloch Stadium for football and track and field, the Willamette Natatorium for swimming, plus the WU Tennis Courts and the WU Softball Field. The Bearcats host cross country meets at Bush’s Pasture Park, while the rowing teams practice on the Willamette River and golfers practice at Illahe Hills Country Club and Creekside Golf Club. WU baseball can practice inside Cone Field House. There are two full-length batting cages and portable mounds for bullpen throwing.

ATHLETIC Facilities
“SPEC” KEENE STADIUM The Bearcats are forturnate to have their baseball clubhouse right at “Spec” Keene Stadium. In addition, Willamette players benefit from having the largest baseball clubhouse located in the Pacific Northwest outside of NCAA Division I. At Willamette, the Bearcat clubhouse is below the stadium seating. It features two satellite televisions and can be accessed from Willamette’s dugout at field level. With the clubhouse located at the field, home games really provide a true baseball experience for the Bearcats each season.
The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 84 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis & Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College. Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only and dropped out in 2009. The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998.
NCAA Division III is where the true student-athlete studies and competes. The National Collegiate Athletic Association is the main governing body of collegiate sports, dividing levels of classification into three divisions. D3 institutions are largely regarded as leading academic institutions and do not offer athletic scholarships. Still, athletics in D3 is highly competitive. There are over 136,000 athletes at over 430 D3 colleges and universities and each one is studying to earn a valuable degree in preparation for the workplace while playing the sport that he or she loves. For D3 athletes, sports have been an integral part of our lives since our youth. From elementary school through high school, sports have complemented our educational experience. And as college looms, we want to continue playing the sport we love while receiving an education from a first-rate college. A D3 school is that fit.
Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.
