KIP IOANE
Head Coach - 4th Year Email: kioane@willamette.edu Office Phone: (503) 370-6063
”Two things set us apart as a basketball program: our commitment to building a family atmosphere, and our desire to have that family play an all-out attacking style on the court.” Kip Ioane is in his fourth year as the head coach of the men’s basketball team at Willamette University. He was previously an assistant coach for the Bearcats for eight seasons. Ioane also played for the Bearcats from 1997-98 through 2000-01. He was a two-year captain and earned four letters while playing at Willamette. He was a finalist for the Josten’s Trophy, given annually to the NCAA Division III men’s basketball player of the year. Ioane earned a B.A. degree from Willamette in 2001 and achieved a Master of Arts in Teaching at WU in 2002. Last year, the Bearcats were led by three players who averaged in double figures. Taylor Mounts averaged 17.3 points per game and finished his career with 1,298 points (11th all-time at WU). Terrell Malley scored 12.2 points per game and Ryan Meehan added 11.8 points per contest. Ioane was All-Conference and All-State in football, basketball and track and field as an athlete at Billings Skyview High School in Montana. He played in 100 basketball games at Willamette. He contributed to the Bearcats earning a combined record of 54-44 during his four seasons.

HEAD COACH
”Willamette University and the Bearcat Hoop program raised me to be the man I am today,” Ioane said. “It is my honor to provide that same type of experience as a coach for the players we have today.” Ioane’s wife, Kelly (Sorenson) ’01, MAT ’02, was a star for the WU volleyball and basketball teams. Kip and Kelly are the parents of Lincoln, age 5, and Leah, age 3, and Xavier, born this past spring.
kevin macrae
Assistant Coach - 3rd Year Kevin MacRae is in his third year on Willamette’s coaching staff after six years as an assistant football and basketball coach at McKay High School in Salem. He helped McKay’s basketball team reach the OSAA state quarterfinals twice. In addition, two members of the team were each honored once as the Central Valley Conference Player of the Year. While at McKay, he worked with offensive and defensive systems similar to those used by Kip Ioane at Willamette. He is a valuable assistant coach for the Bearcats due to his previous coaching experience, plus his familiarity with Willamette’s offensive and defensive schemes. His wife, Mallory, is a Willamette graduate.
J. Jay Davis
Assistant Coach - 1st Year J. Jay Davis is in his first season as a member of the men’s basketball staff. Prior to coming to WU, he was head coach at Skyline High School in Sammamish, Wash., for five years, where he earned a 77-43 record and won three King County Division titles. He led the team to Skyline’s first conference championship and first trip to State in school history. During his last three years at Skyline, his teams were ranked in the top two in Class 4A in points allowed per game. He previously was the top assistant coach at Tacoma CC and at Eastside Catholic High School, along with two years as the head coach at The Bush School in Seattle, Wash. As a college player, Davis competed in basketball in the NWAACC and at Eastern Montana University (now known as Montana State University-Billings).

2011-12 SEASON rEVIEW
2012-13 SEASON OUTLOOK
Taylor Mounts concluded his career with the Bearcats by averaging 17.3 points and 8.2 rebounds per game in 2011-12 to rank third in the NWC in both categories. He was chosen H.M. All-NWC. He previously earned Second Team All-NWC recognition in 2010-11 after averaging 20.2 points.
The Willamette Bearcats look to move up in the Northwest Conference through the efforts of returning starters Terrell Malley (Sr., G), Sean Dart (Sr., Post) and Trevor Bos (Jr., G), along with several returning players and quality newcomers.
Also receiving H.M. All-NWC honors was Terrell Malley, who averaged 12.2 points per game during the season. he scored 10 or more points 14 times and shot 76.1% at the free throw line. Malley sank a 3-pointer against rival Linfield on Feb. 3 for a 5-point lead. He tacked on two free throws with 17 seconds left in WU’s 83-78 win. Ryan Meehan also finished the year with a double-digit scoring average, as he provided 11.8 ponits per game. He led the Bearcats with a total of 43 3-point baskets as well as 30 steals. Willamette experienced a tough start, with key inside player Sean Dart out due to injury. Dart returned and the tean finished 5-20, 3-13 in the NWC. WU won three of its last six games. The Bearcats have earned 1,245 wins to go with a 55.9% winning percentage since their first season in 1924-25. WU won the 1992-93 NAIA Division II National Championship. The Bearcats now compete in NCAA Division III.
It’s a mixture that has the Bearcats ready for an exciting season in 2012-13. Malley is the team’s top returning scorer. He tallied 305 points in 2011-12 and has achieved 844 points at Willamette. He is on track to reach the 1,000-point mark. Dart missed the early part of last season, but still played in 21 games and hit 60.4% from the floor. He has made 64.2% of his shots in two years at WU. He is prepared to lead the team’s rebounding efforts. Bos played in all 25 games with 23 starts last year. He led the team with 3.1 assists per game and shot 81.8% at the line. A talented group of returning players provides the Bearcats with experience. In addition to the returning starters, seven other players are back after seeing action in more than 20 games last season. Avery Manu (Jr., Wing) and Kyle McNally (So., Post) seem prepared to join WU’s starting lineup. McNally shot 55.3% on field goals last season, while Manu has shown an ability to drive to the hoop. Key newcomers are Elliot Babcock-Krenk (Sr., Wing), Rich Vasquez (Jr., Post) and Brandon Luedtke (Fr., Post). Last season, Babcock-Krenk played at Humboldt State University, while Vasquez competed at Scottsdale CC (Ariz.) and Luedtke played at Mountain View HS (Idaho). The Bearcats must replace the top scorer from last year, Taylor Mounts, who tallied 1,298 career points to finish 11th all-time at WU. This year’s team has more depth and height, but must play 10 of its first 16 games on the road. WU will play six of its final nine games at home.

The Willamette University sports medicine program provides medical support to our varsity athletes. Athletic trainers focus on two components: service and education. Service includes the evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries suffered by our athletes. It also involves referrals to medical personnel when athletes become injured or ill. The education component is designed for any student interested in athletic training or other medical fields to gain valuable experience working in a clinical setting.
Students achieve experience by covering practices and games, and by working in the treatment centers where they help Willamette’s certified athletic trainers with rehabilitation of injuries. Our athletic training staff works closely with our team physicians from Silverton Hospital, the physical therapist from PT Northwest and the staff at the Bisohop Wellness Center on the WU campus to provide care for our varsity athletes. WILLAMETTE UNIVERSITY
With an average class size of 14 and a student-to-faculty ratio of 10:1, Willamette provides a personal classroom experience where professors get to know you well, making it easy to find individualized help or ask questions. The life of the Willamette student is active, thought-provoking and focused on community — in the classroom and out. More than 100 student organizations, in addition to numerous athletic, leadership and service opportunities, help you develop your character in addition to your intellect — and have fun, too. Our students are engaged in communities locally and around the world. About 50% earn study abroad credit before they graduate, and 68% of students complete at least one internship while at Willamette. Academics come first at Willamette, but you still have time to compete. Our athletes, both formal and informal, have an enthusiastic network of supporters. Willamette’s NCAA Division III athletics program includes 10 men’s and 10 women’s sports and about 25% of students are DIII student-athletes. Our alumni say their time at Willamette was life-changing, and they credit their education with providing them the expertise they needed for a successful career and life — whether they went on to a job, prestigious graduate program, national fellowship or public service.
Salem, Oregon
Located in the heart of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, the university is situated ideally to access all the benefits of the Pacific Northwest. Gorgeous forests, rivers, mountains and ocean beaches nearby. A relaxed and creative culture. Vibrant arts and music scenes. And, coffee shops on almost every block. Willamette University is in the heart of downtown Salem, Oregon’s capital, a community that is large enough to provide plenty of entertainment, yet personal enough that you’ll usually run into someone you know. When you want to enjoy some of Oregon’s attractions outside Salem, it’s not hard to find a university organized trip or an informal group of friends to join you — whether you plan to snowboard on Mount Hood, catch a concert in Portland or build a bonfire at the coast.

CONE FIELD HOUSE Cone Field House/Gordie James Court is the home of the WU men’s basketball, women’s basketball and volleyball teams. The arena holds 2,500 fans, with plenty of seating on each side of the court. The court was redone and named after former men’s basketball coach Gordie James in 2010 with the new Bearcat logo added at center court. The WU basketball court is connected to the Lestle J. Sparks Center. The Sparks Center includes the Fitness Center, which is available for use by the basketball teams. The Currey Classroom in the Sparks Center is a great location for team meetings and to evaluate player performances on video. Other facilities at WU include Sparks Field, where the men’s and women’s soccer teams play, McCulloch Stadium for football and track and field, John Lewis Field for baseball, the WU Natatorium for swimming, plus the WU Tennis Courts and the WU Softball Field. The Bearcats host cross country meets in Bush’s Pasture Park, the rowing teams practice on the Willamette River, and golfers practice at both Illahe Country Club and Creekside Golf Club.

GORDIE JAMES COURT The court at Cone Field House is named after retired Willamette men’s basketball Head Coach Gordie James. In 22 seasons at WU, from 1987-88 until 2008-09, James achieved a 357-230 (.608) record, and directed the Bearcats to the 1992-93 NAIA Division II National Championship. He also earned a 340-129 (.725) record in 22 years at the high school level, giving him a combined record of 697-359 (.660). The refurbished court was dedicated on Nov. 20, 2010.
The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 84 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College. Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only and dropped out in 2009. The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998.
NCAA Division III is where the true student-athlete studies and competes. The National Collegiate Athletic Association is the main governing body of collegiate sports, dividing levels of classification into three divisions. D3 institutions are largely regarded as leading academic institutions and do not offer athletic scholarships. Still, athletics in D3 is highly competitive. There are over 136,000 athletes at over 430 D3 colleges and universities and each one is studying to earn a valuable degree in preparation for the workplace while playing the sport that he or she loves. For D3 athletes, sports have been an integral part of our lives since our youth. From elementary school through high school, sports have complemented our educational experience. And as college looms, we want to continue playing the sport we love while receiving an education from a first-rate college. A D3 school is that fit.
Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.
