Bearcat athletes excel on their respective teams throughout the year. Several teams have attained postseason success during recent seasons, continuing a history of excellence in Willamette Athletics. These teams and athletes also shine in the classroom. From Academic All-District and Academic All-America selections to several Fulbright, Kemper and NCAA Postgraduate scholarship winners, WU athletes have been honored for their academic achievements. It is this combination, along with a strong commitment to community service and Willamette’s motto, “Not unto ourselves alone are we born,” that makes Bearcat Athletics great. Hillary Arthur is the sixth head coach at Willamette since the start of the women’s soccer program in 1981. WU has been in postseason play 10 times since 1993, including the Final Four in 1998 and 2001. Hillary Arthur is in her fifth season as the head women’s soccer coach at Willamette University. In her first four years, Arthur led the team to a 39-36-5 overall record and a 34-26-4 Northwest Conference record. The Bearcats have finished third in the NWC three times in her four years. In 2011, Willamette achieved an 11-8-1 record, including 10-5-1 (3rd place) in the NWC. Arthur was named NWC Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year. Stephanie Skelly was chosen as the NWC Offensive Player of the Year in 2011 after scoring 16 goals and 5 assists. She was named Second Team All-West Region. Arthur previously coached at Western Nevada College, which competed in the NJCAA. While at WNC, Arthur led the women’s soccer team during its three seasons of existence.
education instructor at California State University-Chico for the 2001-04 seasons. She helped Chico qualify for the NCAA Division II Tournament in 2004. As a college player, Arthur started all four years at Humboldt State University, where she played center midfielder. She was a three-year captain from 1997-99. At HSU, Arthur wass chosen First Team All-Conference three times. In 1996, she helped HSU earn a #6 national ranking and reach the NCAA Division II Far West Regional. HSU finished second in the Northern California Athletic Conference in 1996 and 1997, and won Pacific West Conference titles in 1998 and 1999. During her senior year, Arthur earned a West Region Player award and qualified for Academic All-Conference recognition.
In 2006, WNC won the Region 18 title and advanced to the NJCAA Tournament, with Arthur being selected as the Region 18 Coach of the Year. In 2007, WNC earned second place in the Scenic West.
Arthur received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Exercise Science and Cardiac Rehabilitation/Kinesiology from Humboldt State in 2001. She received a Master of Arts degree in Sports Psychology/ Kinesiology from Cal State-Chico in 2004.

Amy King is in her first season as an assistant coach with the Willamette women’s soccer team. She is from Merrimack, N.H., and has a coaching background in club and high school soccer. She also has spent many summers coaching with In the Net Soccer Academy. King recently returned from the Peace Corps after serving in Azerbaijan. She helped develop girls’ soccer camps and other sports camps. She also worked with the Azerbaijan Football Federations Association (AFFA) to implement camps throughout the country. In college, King was a midfielder at Brandeis University (Mass.). She captained the team in 2007, when it won its first Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) title. King also played in the W-League in 2006. King received a Bachelor of Arts in International and Global Studies and Politics from Brandeis in 2008. She is working toward an MBA from Willamette’s Atkinson Graduate School of Management.
MIKE FOSTER
Assistant Coach - 1st Year Mike Foster joins Willamette as an assistant coach for the women’s soccer program this season. Foster is an Oregon native who grew up in nearby Turner and has developed strong soccer ties in the Willamette Valley. He previously assisted the men’s and women’s soccer teams at Chemeketa Community College, and has helped coach the Cascade High School boys’ and girls’ soccer teams. He has coached youth soccer with the Cascade Futbol Club and Woodburn United. He is the director of the Salem Indoor Soccer Academy. He played soccer at Chemeketa CC for one year. He helped the team reach the NWAACC title game. He is completing an undergraduate degree in History and Exercise Science at Eastern Oregon University.

2012 SEASON OUTLOOK
The Bearcats concluded the 2011 season with an 11-8-1 overall record and a 10-5-2 mark in the Northwest Conference for their best record since 12-7-1 in 2008. WU took third place in the NWC.
The University women’s soccer tean has 19 returning players who will team up with 10 incoming freshman, to prepare or the 2012 season. The roster includes 10 returning starters for the Bearcats.
Senior midfielder Stephanie Skelly scored 16 goals and 5 assists for 37 points, as she led the NWC in scoring. She earned three game-winning goals, including one with 21 seconds left in a 2-1 win against #4-ranked University of Puget Sound. It was Willamette’s first victory against the Loggers since Sept. 24, 2006.
Willamette will attempt to fill the loss of offensive firepower created following the graduation of Stephanie Skelly, who was chosen NWC Offensive Plaer of the Year in 2011 after leading the NWC in scoring.
Skelly’s achievements were recognized through a series of postseason honors. She was named the 2011 NWC Offensive Player of the Year and was selected First Team All-NWC. She was chosen Second Team All-West Region. In addition, she earned First Team Capital One Academic All-America honors. She was chosen as a First Team Academic All-District selection for the second year in a row. Skelly concluded her career with 35 goals and 7 assists for 77 total points. Andi Rowan started all 20 games in 2011 and achieved 1 goal and 3 assists on her way to being named Second Team All-NWC for the third year in a row. She has accumulated 5 goals and 7 assists in her Willamette career. Freshman Sarah Desautels emerged as an impact player, scoring 3 goals and tacking on 2 assists for 8 total points. She was a starter in all 20 games.
Helping fill that void will be the team’s experienced seniors: Andi Rowan, Maddy Grainger, Ariel Wilson and Shannon Scott. Rowan earned a goal and 3 assists last season. Grainger provided the winning goal against Whitworth last season, while Wilson was second on the team in points scored, with 3 goals and 5 assists for 11 points. Scott led the WU defensive, which featured a 1.33 goals against average. Other top scorers returning this season are Sarah Desautels and Kellie Standish, who each finished with three goals. Paige Lancourt provided 2 goals and 4 assists for the Bearcats. Head Coach Hillary Arthur is thrilled with the class of incoming freshmen. All 10 bring great credentials, with significant high school and club team experience. Many of the freshmen will compete for playing time this season.
Gina Barbier earned a 0.54 goals against average and four shutouts in the nets for the Bearcats. She attained a 7-1-1 record.
Willamette will play four non-conference games this year, starting with nearby rival Corban University. WU also will battle with Northwest Christian University, Whittier College (Calif.) and Concordia University (Ore.) before facing Lewis & Clark College in the NWC opener on Sept. 12.
Head Coach Hillary Arthur was selected NWC Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year after guiding the Bearcasts to their third place conference finish. In four seasons at Willamette, Arthur owns a combined record of 39-36-5 (.519).
Overall, Willamette will play 16 games in the NWC, with the Bearcats taking on the other eight teams two times each during a double round-robin schedule. WU will play six of the final nine games of the season at home on Sparks Field.

The Willamette University sports medicine program provides medical support to our varsity athletes. Athletic trainers focus on two components: service and education. Service includes the evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries suffered by our athletes. It also involves referrals to medical personnel when athletes become injured or ill. The education component is designed for any student interested in athletic training or other medical fields to gain valuable experience working in a clinical setting.

With an average class size of 14 and a student-to-faculty ratio of 10:1, Willamette provides a personal classroom experience where professors get to know you well, making it easy to find individualized help or ask questions. The life of the Willamette student is active, thought-provoking and focused on community — in the classroom and out. More than 100 student organizations, in addition to numerous athletic, leadership and service opportunities, help you develop your character in addition to your intellect — and have fun, too. Our students are engaged in communities locally and around the world. About 50% earn study abroad credit before they graduate, and 68% of students complete at least one internship while at Willamette. Academics come first at Willamette, but you still have time to compete. Our athletes, both formal and informal, have an enthusiastic network of supporters. Willamette’s NCAA Division III athletics program includes 10 men’s and 10 women’s sports and about 25% of students are DIII student-athletes. sparks field The Willamette University soccer teams play home games at Sparks Field, an artificial turf facility on the WU campus. Sparks Field has lights for night games and seats 500 fans. The facility, which features a FieldTurf surface, is one of the top small college fields in the Pacific Northwest. Sparks Field also includes covered seating for both teams and has a public address system. Adjacent to Sparks Field is the Lestle J. Sparks Center. The Sparks Center includes the Fitness Center, which is available for use by the soccer teams. The Currey Classroom in the Sparks Center is a great location for team meetings and to evaluate player performances on video. Other facilities at WU include Cone Field House for volleyball as well as men’s and women’s basketball, McCulloch Stadium for football plus track and field, John Lewis Field for baseball, the WU Natatorium for swimming, plus the WU Tennis Courts and the WU Softball Field. Cross country meets are held in Bush’s Pasture Park, the rowing teams practice on the Willamette River, and golfers practice at both Illahe Country Club and Creekside Golf Club.

sparks CENTER Sparks Field is located next to the Lestle J. Sparks Center. The Sparks Center also has offices for the Department of Athletics and the Department of Exercise Science. There are extra courts on the lower level for basketball and volleyball, plus handball and racquetball courts. There is a weight lifting and fitness center, as well as classrooms and locker rooms.
The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Willamette has won 28 NWC team titles since 2003. Current coaches at WU have achieved NWC Coach of the Year honors 24 times. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 84 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College. Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only and dropped out in 2009.
NCAA Division III is where the true student-athlete studies and competes. The National Collegiate Athletic Association is the main governing body of collegiate sports, dividing levels of classification into three divisions. D3 institutions are largely regarded as leading academic institutions and do not offer athletic scholarships. Still, athletics in D3 is highly competitive. There are over 136,000 athletes at over 430 D3 colleges and universities and each one is studying to earn a valuable degree in preparation for the workplace while playing the sport that he or she loves. For D3 athletes, sports have been an integral part of our lives since our youth. From elementary school through high school, sports have complemented our educational experience. And as college looms, we want to continue playing the sport we love while receiving an education from a first-rate college. A D3 school is that fit.
The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.

Dr. Stephen Thorsett
Willamette University President Stephen Thorsett became the 25th president of Willamette University and professor of physics in Willamette’s College of Liberal Arts on July 1, 2011. Thorsett served previously as the dean of the Division of Physical and Biological Sciences at University of California, Santa Cruz. He joined UC-Santa Cruz as an associate professor of astronomy and astrophysics in 1999. He was appointed to professor of astronomy and astrophysics and chair of the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics in 2003.
David Rigsby
Willamette University Director of Athletics David Rigsby is in his second year as the director of athletics at Willamette University. He previously served in several positions in the campus life division, most recently as associate dean of campus life. Rigsby was a member of the baseball team at WU for two years before his career was shortened by an arm injury. He earned a B.A. degree from Willamette in 2000 with a major in Chemistry, and later added an M.S. from Duquesne University.
