WILLAMETTE UNIVERSITY The life of the Willamette student is active, thoughtprovoking and focused on community — in the classroom and out. Student organizations, in addition to numerous athletic, leadership and service opportunities, help develop character in addition to intellect. Our students are engaged in communities locally and around the world. About 50% earn study abroad credit before they graduate, and 68% of students complete at least one internship while at Willamette. Academics come first at Willamette, but you still have time to compete. Our athletes, have an enthusiastic network of supporters. Willamette’s NCAA Division III athletics program includes 10 men’s and 10 women’s sports. About 25% of students are student-athletes. Our alumni say their time at Willamette was lifechanging, and they credit their education with providing them the expertise they needed for a successful career and life — whether they went on to a job, prestigious graduate program, national fellowship or public service.

As a result of the devastation that hit the running community last week, Willamette student-athletes requested that as a conference we make a show of support for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing. At the conclusion of the awards ceremony all athletes will be asked to gather at the south turn of the track for a conference picture. The logo above will be shown on the scoreboard in the background of the photo.

CONFERENCE SHIRTS A limited number of conference shirts will be available for purchase. If you reserved a shirt please pick it up by noon on Saturday. Shirts not picket up by noon will be made available to the general public.

SALEM, OREGON Located in the heart of the Willamette Valley, Willamette University is situated ideally to access all the benefits of the Pacific Northwest. Gorgeous forests, rivers, mountains and ocean beaches nearby. A relaxed and creative culture. Vibrant arts and music scenes. And, coffee shops on almost every block. Willamette University is in the midst of downtown Salem, Oregon’s capital, a community that is large enough to provide plenty of entertainment, yet personal enough that you’ll usually run into someone you know. 2013 TRACK & FIELD NWC CHAMPIONSHIPS

THE NORTHWEST CONFERENCE The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a strong reputation as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a very wide spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC has changed membership and national affiliation during its 87-year existence. It is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, Pacific, Willamette. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth. Charter members included the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific, Puget Sound, Whitman and Willamette. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College. Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only and withdrew after 2009. The NWC offers championships in 18 sports (nine men’s and nine women’s). The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but later joined forces with

the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges (WCIC) in 1984 to create the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges (NCIC). The name was shortened to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.

NCAA DIVISION III All members of the Northwest Conference compete in NCAA Division III, which has 447 institutions and is the largest division in the NCAA. Division III is about following your passions and discovering your potential. The college experience is a time of learning and growth. For student-athletes in Division III, this happens in the classroom, through athletics and, ultimately, by earning an academic degree. The Division III experience provides student-athletes with the opportunity to participate in a competitive athletic environment. Student-athletes can push themselves to excellence. In the NWC, student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their full passions and find their potential through a comprehensive educational experience. Athletes in Division III do not receive financial aid related to athletic ability. NCAA Division III members encourage students to participate by maximizing the number and variety of athletic opportunities.

An emphasis is placed on conference and regional play. NWC members often send their teams throughout the West Coast, Rocky Mountains and Southwest, as well as the center of the country for in-region games. Every member of the Northwest Conference shifted its affiliation to the NCAA in 1998. In almost every sport, the winner of the NWC earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III national championship bracket. Division III members of the NCAA establish an environment with cultural diversity and gender equity among studentathletes and staff. In Division III, faculty and staff focus on the well-being of student-athletes.
