About Willamette University Bearcat Baseball 2007 Willamette University, the first university in the West, has a heritage dating to its founding in 1842. Students and employees are proud of its academic strength, as well as its beautiful campus. Academic success is typical for students at Willamette. More importantly, faculty and staff are concerned about the overall success of each student, so the focus is not only on quality experiences in the classroom, but also on social and cultural development. Students are expected to work hard in their academic endeavors and are also expected to have fun, be active in the community and bring their own personality to everything they do. Why Willamette? • Quality Academics • Student-Athletes are more than 1/4 of the student body • Competition in the NCAA and the Northwest Conference • Student-Faculty Ratio of 11:1 • Students from 34 States • Opportunity to Study Abroad • Located across the street from the Oregon State Capitol • Near the Pacific Coast and the Cascade Mountains We’re proud of our students’ academic abilities. We’re also proud of our students as friends, neighbors and fellow citizens. They have found an ideal match between high-level academics and a variety of quality experiences as members of the community. They exemplify the University motto: “Not unto ourselves alone are we born.” Page

The Mill Race, which runs through campus, is a great place for students to relax.
This motto is put into action locally and throughout the world. At Willamette, you can study abroad, as many of our students do each year. Our students also are actively involved in social and environmental issues. They are concerned about maintaining the beautiful Oregon landscape, while working to improve the lives of others. And so, while Willamette has the same academic expectations as the nation’s most acclaimed colleges and universities, we hope we’ve added something extra ... an equally important focus outside the classroom. Attending college should be fun, inspiring and at times invigorating. It should both challenge you and make you laugh. Academically, Willamette has the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Law, the George H. Atkinson Graduate School of Management, and the School of Education. Cooperative programs enable all students to benefit from the quality curriculum. Willamette is known for its intellectual vitality, its cohesive campus community, its concern for every student, and its ability to balance a rigorous academic program with varied extracurricular activities. They are engaged in scholarly research and publish their findings, but they are primarily focused on teaching. Willamette is selective and seeks serious and talented students. The average first-year student has a 3.74 GPA, an SAT score of 1261 and an ACT score of 27. Enrollment at the undergraduate level is 1,916, with a total enrollment of 2,524. Its endowment consistently earns a spot among the largest in the Northwest and compares favorably on a national basis. The campus features 42 buildings on 61 acres. During the past decade, more than $50 million has been invested on campus. Administrative offices, academic buildings, residence halls and recreational facilities have been renovated or refurbished. The Oregon State Capitol is located across the street from Willamette University.
Salem, the state capital, is the secondlargest city in Oregon, with a population of about 147,000. The Pacific Coast is just about an hour away and the Pacific Coast mountain range is even closer. To the east are the Cascade Mountains, lakes, streams and rivers. Also within driving distance are Portland, the Columbia River gorge and Mount Hood. Willamette benefits from its location across the street from the Oregon State Capitol and from being near other federal, state, county, and city offices. In particular, Willamette students are often chosen for internships with government organizations. Students also participate in the Community Outreach Program through a variety of volunteer service projects. Page

The NCAA and the Northwest Conference Bearcat Baseball 2007
NCAA Division III Willamette is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and competes in Division III, which has over 425 members and is the largest NCAA division. The colleges in Division III place a priority on the overall quality of the educational experience and on successful completion of each student’s academic programs. They seek an environment in which a student-athlete’s activities with an athletic team are seen as an integral part of his or her educational experience. Members in Division III must sponsor at least five men’s sports and five women’s sports.
Athletes in Division III do not receive financial aid related to athletic ability. Willamette and other NCAA Division III members encourage students to participate by maximizing the variety of athletic opportunities. Primary emphasis is placed on conference and regional play. Willamette often sends its teams to California, Idaho, Washington and Texas for in-region games. NCAA Division III members establish an environment with cultural diversity and gender equity among student-athletes and staff. In Division III, employees care about the well-being of their student-athletes.
Northwest Conference The nine prviate colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation for the NWC as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 80 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound, plus Whitman and Whitworth. The charter members in 1926 included Willamette, College of Idaho (Albertson College), Linfield, Pacific, and the College of Puget Sound (UPS). Albany College was added in 1931 and remained for seven
Bearcats
years, then departed and returned in 1949 as Lewis and Clark College. The next member, Pacific Lutheran, joined in 1965, followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew in 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984, but returned in 1988. Menlo College joined the NWC in 2006 in football only. The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes. Page 15

Willamette Season Outlook Bearcat Baseball 2007 The Bearcats return a significant portion of the 2006 Willamette squad that featured a large number of underclassmen. Returning senior starters Kelly Gilmore, Matt Rasmussen, and Grant Yamaguchi will lead a young group of players. Willamette will start three seniors, two juniors and four sophomores as the Bearcats begin the year. The team has shown a relentless work ethic in practice and Head Coach Matt Allison calls it the “funnest group on the field” in his 19 seasons coaching at the collegiate level. With only five seniors graduating at the end of the 2007 season, there is optimism that the Bearcat baseball team will be able to establish a solid reputation over the next several years. Allison, now in his fourth season with the Bearcats, hopes to guide Willamette to a tophalf finish in the Northwest Conference this spring. WU has the potential to challenge the top teams in the NWC, and will have a great chance to do so when the Bearcats host defending champion George Fox University in a three-game series Mar. 3-4. The series with GFU begins a stretch in which Willamette will play 10 of 13 games at home. The Bearcats are slated to open the season on Saturday, Feb. 3 with a home game against crosstown rival Corban College, followed by a doubleheader against Lewis & Clark College at Tigard HS in Tigard, Ore. Willamette’s home schedule continues with the George Fox series three weeks later. Last year, the Bearcats were 17-19 overall, including 11-13 in the NWC. The following is a position-by-position look at Willamette’s 2007 baseball team.
Pitching This year’s group of pitchers has a wealth of experience, with juniors Tye Sundlee and Clint Moran anchoring the pitching staff. Last year, Sundlee tied for the team lead with four wins, led Willamette with 68 2/3 innings pitched and ranked first on the team with 51 strikeouts. He earned a complete-game win against Pacific University in Willamette’s 9-1 win on Mar. 18. Page 20
Tye Sundlee throws to the plate. Last year, he struck out 51 batters in 68 2/3 innings.
Moran, the Bearcats’ lone returning southpaw pitcher, was needed in several roles last season, but will be called upon to give quality innings as a starter this year. Moran had quality outings against Occidental and Whitworth in 2006. One of the strengths of Willamette baseball this season is junior closer Matt Bicocca. He led the Northwest Conference with six saves a year ago. During the football season, Bicocca is Willamette’s starting place-kicker and Moran is the team’s top punter. Sophomore right-hander Kelsey Nakata was another valuable member of last year’s bullpen. Nakata was 3-0, and a 2.31 ERA. He will be called upon late in games again this season. Another key pitcher on this year’s team is sophomore Jarrid Summers. He appeared in eight games last season and held opponents to a miniscule .212 batting average. Other returning players on the WU pitching staff are junior Ryan Smith and sophomores Jimmy Meuel and Tim Mitchell. Smith started two games in 2006 to gain valuable experience that will help him this season. Meuel pitched just two innings in 2006, but gained valuable playing time during the junior varsity season. Mitchell also was a strong contributor to the junior varsity squad last year. Freshmen on the current roster who will contribute valuable innings to the Bearcats this

Willamette Season Outlook Bearcat Baseball 2007 season are right-hander Scott Martin and lefthander Stephen Lane. The Willamette pitching staff has worked hard in the off-season. The success of the staff will be determined by the ability of each pitcher to keep control and to throw strikes consistently.
Catcher For the second straight season, the Bearcats will need to replace their starting catcher from the previous year. The two players competing for the starting job in 2007 are sophomore Dan Maslanik and freshman Zach Kimball. Maslanik had only eight varsity at bats as a freshman, but caught almost every inning of the junior varsity season. He has improved significantly since stepping onto campus. Kimball, from Mesa, Ariz., is a talented freshman, who impressed coaches with his efforts during fall practice.
Infield Coach Allison believes the strongest part of the 2007 Bearcats will be the team’s infield defense. Senior shortstop Matt Rasmussen will anchor the middle of the infield. Rasmussen batted .268 in 2006, but played in just 18 games before suffering an injury against Pacific. D a v i d
Kyle Stalker waits for a pitch. Stalker led the Bearcats with nine home runs in 2006.
Bearcats
Tufo, a sophomore this season, started half of the Bearcats’ games at third base last year. He batted .260 and played well at the “hot corner.” Graduated senior Matt Johnson started every game at second base in 2006. He will be replaced by sophomore Ellis Webster, who started 15 games at shortstop a year ago. The coaches feel the double play combination of Rasmussen and Webster might be the best in the conference this season. Senior Grant Yamaguchi and sophomore Kyle Stalker will man first base. Yamaguchi was a starter in 33 games in 2006 and batted .300 for the Bearcats with five home runs. Stalker hit nine homers in 28 games to finish ninth in the country with 0.32 homers per game. He also hit .309 and tied for the team lead with 32 RBIs. Providing valuable depth in the infield will be senior Ryan Peterson, junior Kiel Wood, and sophomores Jack McGee, Emilio Solano and Kirk Struble. Junior Jared Myers and freshman Andrew Ross will add depth at third base.
Outfield Both senior Kelly Gilmore and junior Sean Anderson started every game last season in the outfield for Willamette. Gilmore led the team in hitting at .333 and on-base percentage at .515. He also had the unique distinction of leading the country in walks per game at the NCAA Division III level, after recording 44 walks in 36 games (1.22 walks per game). Anderson will once again man center field, after batting .262 and tying for the team lead with 29 runs. The most competitive position this fall was left field, where junior Colin Young, senior Ty Eriksen and sophomore Colin Clark battled for the job. All three played platoon roles in 2006, but were able to improve significantly thanks to last year’s junior varsity schedule. Also providing strong depth in the outfield will be sophomore Jordan Roberts. A diligent worker, Roberts was a late-inning defensive specialist in 2006. Freshman James Perez from the WU football team will supply the Bearcats with quality speed off the bench.
