Since joining the Bearcats for the 2004 season, Allison has earned an overall record of 72-77 (.483). He led the Bearcats to a 20-18 record in 2005. Last year, WU ended the season strong, going 15-12 during the final 27 games to finish 18-21 overall, 9-15 in the Northwest Conference (5th place tie). This year, Willamette has 24 returning players, with nine seniors and 13 juniors. Allison began his coaching career as an assistant at the State University of New York at Cortland from 1987-92. While at Georgetown, he worked as the team’s hitting instructor and outfield coach. In 2002-03, Allison was an assistant coach at the University of California at Berkeley. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of California-Riverside in 1982, he went on to earn his master’s degree in English and Textual Studies from Syracuse University in 1990, as well as a master’s degree in Economics from the New School for Social Research in New York in 1998. Conference and National Affiliations Willamette Baseball 2007-08

NCAA Division III Willamette is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and competes in Division III, which has over 425 members and is the largest NCAA division. The colleges in Division III place a priority on the overall quality of the educational experience and on successful completion of each student’s academic programs. They seek an environment in which a student-athlete’s activities with an athletic team are seen as an integral part of his or her educational experience. Members in Division III must sponsor at least five men’s sports and five women’s sports.

Athletes in Division III do not receive financial aid related to athletic ability. Willamette and other NCAA Division III members encourage students to participate by maximizing the variety of athletic opportunities. Primary emphasis is placed on conference and regional play. Willamette often sends its teams to California, Idaho, Washington and Texas for in-region games. NCAA Division III members establish an environment with cultural diversity and gender equity among student-athletes and staff. In Division III, faculty and staff care about the well-being of student-athletes.

Northwest Conference The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation for the NWC as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 80 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College.

Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only. The NWC offers championships in 18 sports (nine men’s and nine women’s). The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.

Bearcat Season Outlook 2008 Willamette Baseball 2007-08 Willamette University baseball players and coaches are excited about the 2008 season. The Bearcats return all three starting pitchers from last spring, plus three of the top four hitters and four relief pitchers with ERAs less than 5.00 who threw at least 15 innings. The team’s list of returning players includes nine seniors. The seniors possess significant experience and give the Bearcats a solid mix of offensive, defensive and pitching skills. With so many returning players it’s easy to forget that Willamette must replace two infield starters and two positions in the outfield. Making the transition easier will be several new players who will challenge for playing time in their first season with the Bearcats. Another bonus is the return to full strength of power hitter Kyle Stalker (Jr., 1B), who hit five home runs in 2007 despite battling injuries all season. Stalker is one of several returning Bearcats who are capable of providing an offensive spark this year. Sean Anderson (Sr., CF) led the team with 15 doubles in 2007 and Colin Young (Sr., RF) achieved a .527 slugging percentage. David Tufo (Jr., 3B) blasted nine doubles for the ‘Cats. Willamette expects to be competitive with every team in the Northwest Conference. The Bearcats will play each of the other eight NWC teams a total of four times as the conference changes from its previous three-game format. WU also is set for non-conference games against Menlo College and Cal State-East Bay, plus a total of three games against teams from the eastern U.S. during a Spring Break trip to Orlando, Fla.

Pitching Willamette’s three returning starters on the mound are left-hander Clint Moran and righthanders Tye Sundlee and Jarrid Summers. Last year, Moran led the pitching staff with a total of 53 strikeouts. Sundlee registered a 4.42 ERA and struck out 51 batters. Summers was 6-4 and was named Honorable Mention All-NWC. Rounding out the starting rotation will be junior Kelsey Nakata (RHP), who was solid in

Kyle Stalker hit nine home runs in 2006 and five home runs last season.

relief last season. Nakata went 3-2 with a 4.96 ERA and two saves. Senior pitchers Jimmy Meuel (RHP) and Ryan Smith (RHP) each started several games in 2006, but will be relievers in 2007. Meuel held opponents to a .250 batting average and Smith produced a 3.45 ERA. Scott Martin (So., RHP) will be ready to supply the Bearcats with middle relief throughout the season. Jack McGee, a junior right-handed pitcher and third baseman, will be the team’s closer. He threw just one inning last season, but struck out two batters and is ready for regular duty in 2008.

Catching The Bearcats have two returning catchers in Dan Maslanik (Jr.) and Zach Kimball (So.), who are solid behind the plate. Maslanik started 23 games in 2007 and threw out nine base stealers.

Bearcat Season Outlook 2008 Willamette Baseball 2007-08 Kimball started 16 games a year ago, but he will miss the entire 2008 season due to injury. Freshman Max Stepan provides Willamette with quality depth at catcher. He has a strong arm for throws to second base and brings power to the plate on offense.

Infield The Bearcats have two returning starters on the infield in Ellis Webster (Jr.) at second base and David Tufo (Jr.) at third base. Webster saw action in 33 games a year ago, while Tufo played in 37 games. Tufo batted .290 with 9 doubles. Stalker will take over at first base for senior starter Grant Yamaguchi. In 2007, Yamaguchi made 313 putouts and hit .296. Stalker is solid on defense and brings power to the offense. At shortstop, the Bearcats must replace Matt Rasmussen, who hit .280 as a senior and played in 106 games in his career. His replacement will be Doug Bloom, a freshman from nearby South Salem High School. Bloom has good range on defense and is consistent at the plate. McGee and Andrew Ross (So.) will battle Tufo for playing time at third. Each possesses good defensive skills. Providing depth at second base are Tufo and Michael Dearborn (Fr.).

Outfield Willamette graduated left fielder Ty Eriksen and right fielder Kelly Gilmore. Eriksen hit .264 and had 54 putouts. Gilmore’s career statistics included 126 games played, 123 starts, 113 hits, 85 runs, 24 doubles and 115 walks.

Anderson (CF) is a returning starter who hit .312 last season. He was 9 of 12 on stolen bases and ended the year 23 of 34 in his career. He holds WU’s career record for doubles with 38. Young (RF) led the Willamette squad with a .351 batting average and was named Honorable Mention All-NWC. He played in 30 games and had 19 starts. He was 7 of 10 on stolen bases. Joining Anderson and Young among WU’s top outfielders are senior Jordan Roberts (CF), sophomore Michael Rierson (RF) and freshman T.C. Lee (LF). Roberts batted .350 and played in 14 games last year. Lee is from Lafayette, Calif., and Rierson is from Sprague HS in Salem, Ore.

Bearcat Seniors Willamette’s Seniors (L to R): Sean Anderson (CF), Jarrid Summers (RHP), Clint Moran (LHP), Colin Young (RF), Tye Sundlee (RHP), Ryan Smith (RHP), Jimmy Meuel (RHP), Jordan Roberts (OF). Note: Summers is a junior, but will transfer to complete a 3-2 degree in Engineering. Not pictured: Matthias Ploetz (OF/P), Kiel Wood (SS).

Some of the most rewarding moments happen on the sidelines. Whether it’s a crowd of hundreds doing “The Wave” or a couple of parents holding a sign, this is the part of any game that hits home for us — people supporting people. In fact, it’s exactly why at American Family, we’re happy and proud to join the cheering section.

About Willamette University Willamette Baseball 2007-08 Willamette University, the first university in the West, has a heritage dating to its founding in 1842. Students and employees are proud of its academic strength, as well as its beautiful campus. Academic success is typical for students at Willamette. More importantly, faculty and staff are concerned about the overall success of each student, so the focus is not only on quality experiences in the classroom, but also on social and cultural development. Students are expected to work hard in their academic endeavors and are also expected to have fun, be active in the community and bring their own personality to everything they do. Why Willamette? • Quality Academics • Student-Athletes are more than 1/4 of the student body • Competition in the NCAA and the Northwest Conference • Student-Faculty Ratio of 11:1 • Students from 42 States • Opportunity to Study Abroad • Located across the street from the Oregon State Capitol • Near the Pacific Coast and the Cascade Mountains We’re proud of our students’ academic abilities. We’re also proud of our students as friends, neighbors and fellow citizens. They have found an ideal match between high-level academics and a variety of quality experiences as members of the community. They exemplify the University motto: “Not unto ourselves alone are we born.”

The Mill Stream, which runs through campus, is a great place for students to relax.

This motto is put into action locally and throughout the world. At Willamette, you can study abroad, as many of our students do each year. Our students also are actively involved in social and environmental issues. They are concerned about maintaining the beautiful Oregon landscape, while working to improve the lives of others. And so, while Willamette has the same academic expectations as the nation’s most acclaimed colleges and universities, we hope we’ve added something extra ... an equally important focus outside the classroom. Attending college should be fun, inspiring and at times invigorating. It should both challenge you and make you laugh. Academically, Willamette has the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Law, the George H. Atkinson Graduate School of Management, and the School of Education. Cooperative programs enable all students to benefit from the quality curriculum. Willamette is known for its intellectual vitality, its cohesive campus community, its concern for every student, and its ability to balance a rigorous academic program with varied extracurricular activities. Willamette’s student-faculty ratio of 11:1 allows faculty to maintain ample office hours and to serve as advisors. They are engaged in scholarly research and publish their findings, but they are primarily focused on teaching. Willamette is selective and seeks serious and talented students. The average first-year student has a 3.76 GPA, an SAT score of 1230 and an ACT score of 27. Enrollment at the undergraduate level is 1,943, with a total enrollment of 2,628. About 95 percent of Willamette students receive financial aid and scholarships. Many students choose to attend graduate or professional school. At Willamette, you can literally walk across the street to the State Capitol or spend an entire semester studying your major in a foreign country.

Willamette’s endowment is consistently among the largest in the Northwest and compares favorably on a national basis. The campus features 42 buildings on 61 acres. During the past decade, more than $50 million has been invested in the campus. Recent projects include the $5.5 million Hallie Ford Museum of Art, the $8 million Mary Stuart Rogers Music Center, and the $2.7 million Montag Student Center and the $14 million Kaneko Commons. Construction will begin soon on Ford Hall, which will house Rhetoric and Media Studies, Computer Science, Math, Digital Art, Film Studies and Music Technology. Funds for the 46,000-square-foot building include an $8 million gift from Hallie Ford.

The Oregon State Capitol is located across the street from Willamette University.

Salem, the state capital, is the secondlargest city in Oregon, with a population of about 147,000. The Pacific Coast is just about an hour away and the Pacific Coast mountain range is even closer. To the east are the Cascade Mountains, lakes, streams and rivers. Also within driving distance are Portland, the Columbia River gorge and Mount Hood. Willamette benefits from its location across the street from the Oregon State Capitol and from being near other federal, state, county, and city offices. In particular, Willamette students are often chosen for internships with government organizations. Students also participate in the Community Outreach Program through a variety of volunteer service projects.
