Some of the most rewarding moments happen on the sidelines. Whether it’s a crowd of hundreds doing “The Wave” or a couple of parents holding a sign, this is the part of any game that hits home for us — people supporting people. In fact, it’s exactly why at American Family, we’re happy and proud to join the cheering section.

Conference and National Affiliations Willamette Baseball 2008-09

NCAA Division III Willamette is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and competes in Division III, which has over 425 members and is the largest NCAA division. The colleges in Division III place a priority on the overall quality of the educational experience and on successful completion of each student’s academic programs. They seek an environment in which a student-athlete’s activities with an athletic team are seen as an integral part of his or her educational experience. Members in Division III must sponsor at least five men’s sports and five women’s sports.

Athletes in Division III do not receive financial aid related to athletic ability. Willamette and other NCAA Division III members encourage students to participate by maximizing the variety of athletic opportunities. Primary emphasis is placed on conference and regional play. Willamette often sends its teams to California, Idaho, Washington and Texas for in-region games. NCAA Division III members establish an environment with cultural diversity and gender equity among student-athletes and staff. In Division III, faculty and staff care about the well-being of student-athletes.

Northwest Conference The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation for the NWC as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 80 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College.

Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only. The NWC offers championships in 18 sports (nine men’s and nine women’s). The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.

Bearcat Season Outlook 2009 Willamette Baseball 2008-09 The Willamette University baseball players and coaches are excited about the 2009 season. The Bearcats feature a combination of returning veterans and young players. Five starters return to anchor the infield, while several newcomers will play key roles in the success of the team. The mixture of veterans and newcomers includes many talented players. They can create offense throughout the lineup. Head Coach Aaron Swick is starting his first season leading the Bearcats, but it’s not his first year with the team. He was an assistant coach at WU in 2006 and 2007, before serving as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at South Dakota State University in 2008. WU returns seven of its top 10 hitters after batting .308 as a team last year. The Bearcats led NCAA Division III in home runs per game, blasting 66 homers in 40 games (1.65 avg.). WU ranked 25th in slugging percentage (.518), while achieving 66 doubles and 114 extra-base hits. Kyle Stalker (Sr., 1B) is back as a team leader. In 2008, he ranked first in Division III in home runs per game (22 homers, 39 games, 0.56 avg.). He was second in the nation in RBIs per game (1.62) and seventh in slugging percentage (.844). Stalker was named Northwest Conference Player of the Year and was chosen Third Team All-America by the ABCA. He established WU season records for home runs and RBIs (63). He also set the record for career home runs (36). Sophomores will offer significant support on offense, with shortstop Doug Bloom, left fielder T.C. Lee and catcher/DH Max Stepan all hitting over .320 as freshmen last spring. Bloom was selected First Team All-NWC after hitting .333, earning seven doubles, scoring 39 runs and stealing 16 bases on 20 attempts. Lee received Second Team All-NWC honors last spring. He hit .320 and smacked 10 homers, while pouinding out six doubles and tying for second on the team with 34 RBIs. Stepan batted .343 for the ‘Cats and hit seven home runs in 70 at bats. He achieved a .671 slugging percentage on offense and earned a .990 fielding percentage behind the plate.

Doug Bloom was named First Team All-NWC as a freshman at shortstop last season.

Willamette hoped to compete for the NWC title this season. The ’Cats will play each of the NWC teams four times. WU also will travel to California to play CSU-East Bay and Menlo. WU was 20-20 last year, including 16-15 in the NWC. The Bearcats split four games with perennial power George Fox University.

Pitching Graduating seniors threw 65% of the total innings for the Bearcats last year. As a result, the pitching staff is young. Even so, the pitchers have the skills to be successful. Kelsey Nakata (Sr., RHP) is the only returning starter and is projected to anchor the rotation. Nakata’s career ERA of 4.22 ranks ninth on WU’s all-time list. Other projected starters are Devin Grindy (So, RHP), Ryan Hood-Taylor (So, RHP) and Chris Torgerson (So, RHP). Each saw several innings on the mound last season. Other key contributors to the pitching staff will be Scott Martin (Jr., RHP) and Jack McGee (Sr. RHP). Martin, a middle reliever, threw 17 innings and had a 5.71 ERA in 2008. McGee remains the Bearcats’ closer, after recording four saves last season. McGee also will see time at first base after hitting .288 as a junior.

Bearcat Season Outlook 2009 Willamette Baseball 2008-09 Several players will provide pitching depth. Senior Colin Clark, sophomores David Stott, Andrew Wyman, Stephen Branch, Nate Bender, and Quinn Humphries, and freshmen Blake Paisley and Casey Spink will provide support in relief of WU’s starting rotation.

Catching Willamette returns both starting catchers from last season. Dan Maslanik (Sr.) will be the starter. He has caught the pitching staff throughout his career. Stepan will see action behind the plate and contribute to the offense as a designated hitter when he isn’t catching. In 2008, Maslanik hit .279 and was solid on defense, as he earned a .992 fielding percentage. Stepan’s .343 batting average ranked third on the team. Maslanik and Stepan combined to throw out 10 base stealers. Dylan Summers (Fr.) and Ross Knutsen (So.) will provide depth for the Bearcats at catcher this year.

Infield The Bearcats return starters at every infield position. In addition to the catcher, WU has returners in Stalker at first base, Ellis Webster

(Sr.) at second base, Bloom at shortstop, and McGee and David Tufo at third base. Depth in the infield will be provided by Michael Dearborn (So.), Jake Atwell-Scrivner (Sr.), Mike Oliver (Fr.) and Tim Schilf (Fr.). Willamette registered 38 double plays and one triple play in 2008. Bloom, Webster, and Stalker combined to turn the triple play in a game against Whitworth on March 30.

Outfield Willamette graduated Sean Anderson and Colin Young in the outfield. Both produced on offense and defense. Anderson batted .388, was First Team All-NWC and belted eight homers. Young batted .314 with nine home runs. Lee returns to anchor the outfield after an All-NWC rookie season a year ago. He showed power at the plate (.320 avg., 10 HRs) and was one of seven Bearcats to hit over .300. Michael Rierson (So.) will start in center field after playing in 23 games and hitting .284 last year. Clark will challenge for playing time in the outfield in addition to pitching. Also playing in the outfield will be freshmen Adam Reid and Mitchell Rowan.

Students are expected to work hard in their academic endeavors and to be active members of the Salem area and their home communities. Willamette is proud of the academic accomplishments and well-rounded lives of its students. At WU, students have found an ideal match between the demands of a rigorous academic program and the ability to participate in a variety of athletic, social and community activities. The stadium features chairback seating in part of the grandstand. Overall capacity is 1,000. The field is natural grass, which remains green nearly all-year due to Oregon’s moderate climate. Willamette’s football team plays home games at McCulloch Stadium, located two blocks from campus. The stadium seats 2,400 fans and has lights for night games. It also features a new scoreboard with a video display screen. There is an athletic training room, along with spacious locker rooms and meeting rooms. McCulloch Stadium creates the atmosphere of an old stadium, but provides many modern conveniences. It has a FieldTurf surface. The Charles Bowles Track, located inside McCulloch Stadium, is an all-weather facility for WU’s track and field and cross country teams, which host meets each year. In 2008, Willamette hosted the NCAA West Regional in cross country. The entire football, track, cross country and baseball complex is at Bush’s Pasture Park. The park hosts cross country meets on its wide paths and is known for its art exhibits and rose garden. Cone Field House is the home court for the Willamette men’s basketball, women’s basketball and volleyball teams. The arena holds 2,500 fans, with plenty of seating on each side of the court. There is a quality sound system, plus tables for

official timers, scorekeepers and statisticians, along with space for broadcast media. Cone Field House is part of the Lestle J. Sparks Center, which houses offices for the Department of Athletics and the Department of Exercise Science. The building has basketball, handball and racquetball courts, a weight lifting and fitness center, classrooms and locker rooms.

John Lewis Field is the home of the Bearcat baseball team. The field is located near the WU campus at Roy “Spec” Keene Stadium.

Also connected to the Sparks Center is the WU natatorium, home of Bearcat swimming. The natatorium, with space for 200 fans, also can be seen from a viewing area in the lobby. The Bearcat soccer teams play home games at Sparks Field, an artificial turf facility next to the Sparks Center. The field is equipped with lights for night games and seats 500 spectators. It also has seating for both teams, plus a public address system. The facility is one of the top college fields in the Northwest. Close to the Sparks Center and Sparks Field are six outdoor tennis courts. The men’s and women’s tennis teams host meets during the spring each year. On the east side of campus is the Willamette Softball Complex. It includes covered dugouts, batting cages, a scoreboard and bleachers. The WU men’s and women’s golf teams usually practice at Illahe Hills Country Club or Creekside Golf Club. Members of the men’s and women’s rowing teams have their own boathouse and hold workouts on the Willamette River in downtown Salem.
