Willamette Head Coach Willamette Softball 2007-08

Damian Williams

Head Coach (10th year), 164-155 (.514) Alma Mater: Seattle Pacific University, 1995 Damian Williams is in his 10th season as the head softball coach at Willamette University. He has earned an overall record of 164-155 (.514) at Willamette and has led the Bearcats to a 117-95 (.552) record in the Northwest Conference. In 2007, Williams guided the Bearcats to a 20-17 overall record, including 14-14 (4th place) in the NWC. The Bearcats were ranked as high as #5 in NCAA Division III after taking second place at the prestigious NFCA Leadoff Classic in Panama City, Fla. Willamette hit .302 for the season and was 87 of 96 on stolen bases. Williams was selected NWC Coach of the Year in 2000, after leading Willamette to a 25-10 overall record and a second place tie in the NWC at 15-6. The 2000 team led the nation with an impressive 0.76 team earned run average and was ranked #5 in the West Region. In 2005, Williams helped

the Bearcats achieve a 21-11 overall record, while finishing the year with a 19-7 mark in the NWC (2nd place). The success of the 2000 and 2005 teams indicate how much the team improved after Williams arrived. In 1998, the season before Williams took over, the Bearcats were 5-33 overall. Just two years later, the 2000 team was the most-improved squad in NCAA Division III, gaining 16 games over 1999 and up 21 games from 1998. Prior to joining the Willamette coaching staff for the 1999 season, Williams served as the head coach at Shoreline Community College in Seattle for four years. His efforts gradually improved the team, which went 25-12 during the 1998 season, on its way to qualifying for the NWAACC Tournament. Williams graduated from Seattle Pacific University in 1995. He received a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and Sports Administration. Williams resides in Salem with his wife, Genesis.

Conference and National Affiliations Willamette Softball 2007-08

NCAA Division III Willamette is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and competes in Division III, which has over 425 members and is the largest NCAA division. The colleges in Division III place a priority on the overall quality of the educational experience and on successful completion of each student’s academic programs. They seek an environment in which a student-athlete’s activities with an athletic team are seen as an integral part of his or her educational experience. Members in Division III must sponsor at least five men’s sports and five women’s sports.

Athletes in Division III do not receive financial aid related to athletic ability. Willamette and other NCAA Division III members encourage students to participate by maximizing the variety of athletic opportunities. Primary emphasis is placed on conference and regional play. Willamette often sends its teams to California, Idaho, Washington and Texas for in-region games. NCAA Division III members establish an environment with cultural diversity and gender equity among student-athletes and staff. In Division III, faculty and staff care about the well-being of student-athletes.

Northwest Conference The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation for the NWC as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 80 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College.

Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only. The NWC offers championships in 18 sports (nine men’s and nine women’s). The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.

Bearcat Season Outlook 2008 Willamette Softball 2007-08 As Head Coach Damian Williams and the Willamette University softball team prepare to open the 2008 season, one thing is clear. The Bearcats are going to play hard, give their best and battle until the final out of every game. “We’re going to go out and play our best and see how far that takes us,” Williams said. “We aren’t supposed to have a great season, but our players are committed to taking one game at a time and playing up to their abilities.” The potential is there for Willamette to go pretty far. Although the Bearcats were picked to finish fifth out of nine teams in the Northwest Conference, Willamette will be led by one of the top pitchers in the conference and the team will have several offensive threats on its lineup card. Nikki Franchi (Jr., RHP) pitched in 24 games last season and earned a 10-8 record. She struck out 144 batters in 122 2/3 innings to set WU’s strikeout record. She earned a 2.45 ERA. Franchi has worked hard in the offseason and has the skills to set another strikeout record this spring. Her effectiveness in the circle should make WU competitive every time she pitches. In addition to her pitching abilities, Franchi also brings a consistent and powerful bat to the plate. Last year, she hit .390 with 15 doubles, one

Liz Gilgan batted .355 last year and scored a school record 39 runs.

Nikki Franchi will lead the pitching staff. She was 10-8 with 144 strikeouts in 2007.

triple and two home runs. She pounded out a total of 41 hits and led the team with 29 RBIs. Also providing solid firepower at the plate is the team’s only senior, shortstop Liz Gilgan. A year ago, Gilgan achieved a .355 batting average with 44 hits. She scored a school record 39 runs. Gilgan begins her senior season as the WU career record holder for hit by pitches (11) and double plays turned (21). She’s second all-time at Willamette with 65 stolen bases on 71 stolen bases attempts. She ranks third in runs scored (76) and on-base percentage (.437). She is sixth in batting average at .352 and hits (108). Joining Franchi and Gilgan as top batters in the WU lineup are Marissa Richards (Jr., 1B) and LaShawna Holcomb (Jr., CF). Both are capable of hitting line-drive singles and doubles to the power allies. They also have the strength to add to Willamette’s home run total. Holcomb hit .284 and played in 36 games in 2007. Richards batted .230 and saw action in 24 games. Both hit about .350 as freshmen in 2006.

The 2008 Willamette Bearcats (L to R): Cirbi Anthony, Debra Bohren, Liz Gilgan, Amy Valencia, Jayleen Morris, Crystal Kummerfeldt, Nicole Wallace, Caitlin Waugh, Marissa Richards, LaShawna Holcomb, Lizzy Whittemore, Kelsey Schafer, Katie Peterson, Nikki Franchi, Angela Pantley.

Also returning for Willamette are junior left fielder Cirbi Anthony and six sophomores. Last year, Anthony batted .253 and was successful on 11 of 11 stolen base attempts. Katie Peterson (So., Utility) finished a solid freshman season in 2007 with a .316 average. She played in 27 games for the Bearcats. Debra Bohren (So., RF/P) played in 30 games, hit .271 and was 13 of 14 on steals. Nicole Wallace (So., C/2B) provided solid play in 36 games, as she hit .255 with 16 runs and 16 RBIs. Caitlin Waugh (So., OF) saw action in 27 games a year ago. She made 14 putouts without any errors while playing in the outfield. Jayleen Morris (So., C) played in four games (two starts), while Angela Pantley (So., P) did not play. Willamette also welcomes four freshman to complete the Bearcats’ roster. They are Crystal Kummerfeldt (2B), Kelsey Schafer (IF), Amy Valencia (RHP) and Lizzy Whittemore (3B). All

four will battle for playing time while providing depth on the 15-player roster. The Bearcats will play a quality schedule. In addition to 28 games in Northwest Conference play, the ‘Cats are set to compete in a pair of tournaments. WU will play two games at the Northwest Cup in Portland, Ore., on Feb. 23 to start the season and will be in Orange County, Calif., for the Sun West Tournament on March 25-27. The Bearcats’ Sun West schedule features six teams from throughout the nation, including highlyregarded teams from Wellesley (Mass.), Williams (Mass.) and Chapman (Calif.). Coach Williams enters his 10th season at Willamette with a 164-155 (.514) overall record. Six of his teams have finished above the .500 mark, including four seasons with 20 or more victories. He has guided the ‘Cats to a 117-95 (.552) record in NWC action.

Some of the most rewarding moments happen on the sidelines. Whether it’s a crowd of hundreds doing “The Wave” or a couple of parents holding a sign, this is the part of any game that hits home for us — people supporting people. In fact, it’s exactly why at American Family, we’re happy and proud to join the cheering section.

About Willamette University Willamette Softball 2007-08 Willamette University, the first university in the West, has a heritage dating to its founding in 1842. Students and employees are proud of its academic strength, as well as its beautiful campus. Academic success is typical for students at Willamette. More importantly, faculty and staff are concerned about the overall success of each student, so the focus is not only on quality experiences in the classroom, but also on social and cultural development. Students are expected to work hard in their academic endeavors and are also expected to have fun, be active in the community and bring their own personality to everything they do. Why Willamette? • Quality Academics • Student-Athletes are more than 1/4 of the student body • Competition in the NCAA and the Northwest Conference • Student-Faculty Ratio of 11:1 • Students from 42 States • Opportunity to Study Abroad • Located across the street from the Oregon State Capitol • Near the Pacific Coast and the Cascade Mountains We’re proud of our students’ academic abilities. We’re also proud of our students as friends, neighbors and fellow citizens. They have found an ideal match between high-level academics and a variety of quality experiences as members of the community. They exemplify the University motto: “Not unto ourselves alone are we born.”

The Mill Stream, which runs through campus, is a great place for students to relax.

This motto is put into action locally and throughout the world. At Willamette, you can study abroad, as many of our students do each year. Our students also are actively involved in social and environmental issues. They are concerned about maintaining the beautiful Oregon landscape, while working to improve the lives of others. And so, while Willamette has the same academic expectations as the nation’s most acclaimed colleges and universities, we hope we’ve added something extra ... an equally important focus outside the classroom. Attending college should be fun, inspiring and at times invigorating. It should both challenge you and make you laugh. Academically, Willamette has the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Law, the George H. Atkinson Graduate School of Management, and the School of Education. Cooperative programs enable all students to benefit from the quality curriculum. Willamette is known for its intellectual vitality, its cohesive campus community, its concern for every student, and its ability to balance a rigorous academic program with varied extracurricular activities. The Bearcats play their home games at the Willamette University Softball Field.

The Willamette University Softball Field is located on the east side of campus. It includes covered dugouts, a team locker room, battting cages, a scoreboard and bleachers. The field also has an infield tarp, allowing the Bearcats to play when many other fields are wet or muddy. Overall, the WU Softball Field is a quality facility. The natural grass outfield surface and dirt infield are well-maintained and provide for smooth play throughout the spring. John Lewis Field is the home of Willamette baseball. The field is located at Roy S. “Spec” Keene Stadium at Bush’s Pasture Park. Overall capacity is 1,000. The field is natural grass and remains green nearly all-year due to Oregon’s moderate climate.
