Willamette Head Coach Willamette Softball 2008-09
Damian Williams
Head Coach (11th year), 191-167 (.534) Alma Mater: Seattle Pacific University, 1995 Damian Williams is in his 11th season as the head softball coach at Willamette University. He has earned an overall record of 191-167 (.534) at Willamette and has led the Bearcats to a 136-104 (.567) record in the Northwest Conference. In 2008, Williams guided the Bearcats to a 25-11 overall record, including a 19-9 record (3rd place) in the NWC. The ’Cats scored 256 runs (7.11 avg.), hit 45 homers (1.25 per game) and stole 93 bases (2.58 per game). Nikki Franchi (P/DP) earned a 19-4 pitching record and batted .518 to earn First Team All-America honors. Williams was selected NWC Coach of the Year in 2000, after leading Willamette to a 25-10 overall record and a second place tie in the NWC at 15-6. The 2000 team led the nation with an impressive 0.76 team earned run average and was ranked #5 in the West Region. In 2005, Williams helped
the Bearcats achieve a 23-12 overall record, while finishing the year with a 19-7 mark in the NWC (2nd place). The success of the 2000 and 2005 teams indicate how much the team improved after Williams arrived. In 1998, the season before Williams took over, the Bearcats were 5-33 overall. Just two years later, the 2000 team was the most-improved squad in NCAA Division III, gaining 16 games over 1999 and up 21 games from 1998. Prior to joining the Willamette coaching staff for the 1999 season, Williams served as the head coach at Shoreline Community College in Seattle for four years. His efforts gradually improved the team, which went 25-12 during the 1998 season, on its way to qualifying for the NWAACC Tournament. Williams graduated from Seattle Pacific University in 1995. He received a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and Sports Administration. Williams resides in Salem with his wife, Genesis.

Some of the most rewarding moments happen on the sidelines. Whether it’s a crowd of hundreds doing “The Wave” or a couple of parents holding a sign, this is the part of any game that hits home for us — people supporting people. In fact, it’s exactly why at American Family, we’re happy and proud to join the cheering section.

Conference and National Affiliations Willamette Softball 2008-09
NCAA Division III Willamette is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and competes in Division III, which has over 425 members and is the largest NCAA division. The colleges in Division III place a priority on the overall quality of the educational experience and on successful completion of each student’s academic programs. They seek an environment in which a student-athlete’s activities with an athletic team are seen as an integral part of his or her educational experience. Members in Division III must sponsor at least five men’s sports and five women’s sports.
Athletes in Division III do not receive financial aid related to athletic ability. Willamette and other NCAA Division III members encourage students to participate by maximizing the variety of athletic opportunities. Primary emphasis is placed on conference and regional play. Willamette often sends its teams to California, Idaho, Washington and Texas for in-region games. NCAA Division III members establish an environment with cultural diversity and gender equity among student-athletes and staff. In Division III, faculty and staff care about the well-being of student-athletes.
Northwest Conference The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation for the NWC as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 80 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College.
Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only. The NWC offers championships in 18 sports (nine men’s and nine women’s). The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.

Bearcat Season Outlook 2009 Willamette Softball 2008-09 Head Softball Coach Damian Williams and the Willamette University Bearcats have spent a busy off-season preparing for the opening of the 2009 schedule. Through all their hard work, one thing has become clear. Bearcat fans are in luck, because this team is going to put on a show. “We will be young, but exciting to watch,” Williams said. Willamette’s young team has plenty talent. Coaches in the Northwest Conference, as well as across the nation, have recognized the potential in the Willamette clubhouse. The Bearcats were picked to finished third out of nine teams in the NWC Preseason Poll and were ranked #23 in the nation in the NCAA Division III Preseason Poll conducted by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Willamette will be led by Nikki Franchi (Sr., RHP). In 2008, Franchi was named First Team All-America as a utility player by the NFCA, as she became Willamette’s first All-America selection in softball. She was chosen First Team All-West Region, NWC Player of the Year and was First Team All-NWC. At the plate, Franchi earned an impressive .518 batting average and set WU records with 10 home runs and a .955 slugging percentage. She set another record with 45 RBIs and tied a WU record with 46 runs scored. Franchi started all 36 games for the Bearcats, either as a pitcher or as a designated player. Every time Franchi steps into the circle, she gives the ’Cats a great chance to win. Franchi finished the year with a 19-4 record and a 1.85 earned run average. She struck out 203 batters to set a school record and held opponents to a .198 average. She registered three complete-game shutouts and one combined shutout. She pitched a total of 147 2/3 innings. Franchi already holds a number of records at WU, both at the plate and in the circle. With the sweat equity she put in during the off-season, she hopes to add to those records while helping the team improve on a very respectable 25-11
In two seasons with WU, Nicole Wallace has hit five doubles, two triples and six homers.
Marissa Richards hit .348 last season, while scoring 36 runs and recording 26 RBIs.
finish in 2008. Willamette was 19-9 in the NWC last spring. Along with Franchi’s talent, the Bearcats return a great deal of firepower at the plate. Seniors LaShawna Holcomb (CF) and Marissa Richards (1B) are two of the Bearcats’ top returning batters. They are solid hitters who are capable of providing base hits as well as long-range, powerful shots. Last season, Holcomb and Richards both started 36 games and each batted .348 for the Bearcats. Holcomb also provided Willamette with six homers and 36 RBI’s, while Richards

Bearcat Season Outlook 2009 Willamette Softball 2008-09 hit seven balls out of the park and drove in 26 runs. In addition to their work at the plate, they provided solid defensive on the diamond. Also returning for the Bearcats are senior left fielder Cirbi Anthony and junior second basemen Nicole Wallace. Anthony started all 36 games and was solid in the outfield last year. She provides a wealth of leadership and experience. Wallace also started every game last season. She hit .306 and blasted five home runs. Lizzy Whittemore (So., 3B), Jayleen Morris (Jr., C) and Caitlin Waugh (Jr., OF) return for the Bearcats, providing depth and experience. Whittemore played in 27 games in 2008, while Morris saw action in 23 games and Waugh was able to contribute in 16 games. Franchi is one of four returning All-NWC players for the Bearcats this season. Holcomb, Richards and Wallace were all chosen Second Team All-NWC last year. Williams succeeded in recruiting a talented group of new players to join the 2009 Bearcats. Suzannah Von Trapp (Fr., INF), Sierra Lessel (Fr., OF), Nichole Robertson (Fr.,OF), Susie Krewer (Fr., OF), Carolyn Cava (Fr., OF), Emily Bray (Fr., INF), Talissa Huntsman (Fr., P/IF), Alex Watilo (Fr., P), and Mica Romero (Fr., SS)
LaShawna Holcomb is tied for third all-time at Willamette with 75 career RBIs.

all will battle for playing time, while providing depth for the Bearcats. In addition to a challenging 28-game NWC schedule, the ’Cats also will square of against a tough crop of non-conference foes, including in-state rival Southern Oregon University on March 24. Willamette will open the season with game against Eastern Oregon University and Concordia University (Ore.) on Sunday, Feb. 22 at the Northwest Cup in Portland, Ore. The pre-conference schedule also includes two exhibition games against the University of British Columbia on Saturday, Feb. 28. The Bearcats will open Northwest Conference play on Saturday, March 7 and Sunday, March 8 with back-to-back doubleheaders at the WU Softball Field against Pacific University. Williams is entering his 11th season leading the Bearcats. He has amassed an overall record of 191-167 (.534). Seven of his teams have finished above the .500 mark and five of those teams have produced 20 or more wins. Under Williams’ guidance, the Bearcats have achieved a 136-104 (.567) record in NWC action.

Willamette Athletic Facilities Willamette Softball 2008-09
The Bearcats play their home games at the Willamette University Softball Field.
The Willamette University Softball Field is located on the east side of campus. It includes covered dugouts, a team locker room, battting cages, a scoreboard and bleachers. The field also has an infield tarp, allowing the Bearcats to play when many other fields are wet or muddy. Overall, the WU Softball Field is a quality facility. The natural grass outfield surface and dirt infield are well-maintained and provide for smooth play throughout the spring. John Lewis Field is the home of Willamette baseball. The field is located at Roy S. “Spec” Keene Stadium at Bush’s Pasture Park. Overall capacity is 1,000. The field is natural grass and remains green nearly all-year due to Oregon’s moderate climate. Willamette’s football team plays home games at McCulloch Stadium, located near John Lewis Field. The football stadium is just two blocks from campus, seats 2,400 spectators, features a new video scoreboard and has lights for night games. It also includes an athletic training room. McCulloch Stadium has a FieldTurf playing surface, along with spacious locker rooms and meeting rooms. It provides the atmosphere of an old stadium, but with modern conveniences. The Charles Bowles Track, located inside McCulloch Stadium, is an all-weather facility that showcases Willamette’s track and field and cross country teams, which host meets each year. The entire football, track, cross country and baseball complex is at Bush’s Pasture Park. The
park hosts cross country meets on its wide paths and is known for its art exhibits and rose garden. Cone Field House is the home court for the Willamette men’s basketball, women’s basketball and volleyball teams. The arena holds 2,500 fans, with plenty of seating on each side of the court. There is a sound system, plus tables for official timers, scorekeepers and statisticians. Cone Field House is part of the Lestle J. Sparks Center, which houses offices for the Department of Athletics and the Department of Exercise Science. The building has basketball, handball and racquetball courts, a weight lifting and fitness center, classrooms and locker rooms. Also connected to the Sparks Center is the WU natatorium, home of Bearcat swimming. The natatorium, with space for 200 fans, also can be seen from a viewing area in the lobby. The Willamette University soccer teams play home games at Sparks Field, an artificial turf facility next to the Sparks Center. The field is equipped with lights and seats 500 spectators. Close to the Sparks Center and Sparks Field are six outdoor tennis courts. The men’s and women’s tennis teams host meets during the spring each year. The WU men’s and women’s golf teams usually practice at Illahe Hills Country Club or Creekside Golf Club. Members of the men’s and women’s rowing teams have their own boathouse and hold workouts on the Willamette River in downtown Salem.
