Leo Castillo
After a strong 2009, the Bearcat men and women will both look to defend their Northwest Conference titles. The women will seek their ninth straight title, while the men will pursue their second straight title and their seventh in the last nine years. The Bearcats also hope to add to their list of NCAA All-Americans, as there are five returning student-athletes who have national championship experience.
Distance Men: The foundation of the Bearcat men’s success has been in the distance events. The men return a large contingent of conference scorers who will look to break through on the national level after a strong fall cross country season. Leading the way for the Bearcats will be five conference scorers in the 1,500, which was won by conference champion Leo Castillo (So., Parkdale, Ore.). He led a 1-4-5-6-7 finish at last year’s conference championships. He was joined by returnees Stefan Redfield (Jr., Sisters, Ore.), Kyle Kotaich (Sr., Florence, Ore.), Nick Rebol (Jr., Cottonwood, Calif.) and Ryan McLaughlin (Jr., Milwaukie, Ore.). The Bearcat men also were impressive in the 5,000 with a 1-5-6-7 finish. Castillo again led the squad to pick up his second conference title as a freshman. He was joined by Ben Donovan (So.,

Minneapolis, Minn.), Chris Platano (Sr., Myrtle Point, Ore.) and Redfield. Platano led a 1-2-5 finish in the steeplechase along with Rebol and Donovan. Women: The women return AllAmerican and NWC Athlete of the Meet Kimber Mattox (So., Bend, Ore.). Mattox won the steeplechase with an NCAA automatic qualifying time, went on to win the 5,000 and place third behind two teammates in the 1,500. Mattox will be joined by Tina Patel (Sr., Bend, Ore.), who scored in both the 5,000 and 10,000 at last year’s NWC championships. Patel also qualified for the NCAA Cross Country Championships this last fall. Mattox and Patel are joined by a young group of runners who will be looking to replace the points lost by graduation.
Sprints, Hurdles, Jumps and Multi-Events Men: The Bearcat men return a strong group in the sprints with all four members of the third place 4 x 100-meter team back as well as 400-meter NWC champion Paul Winger

Samantha Nhim (So., Tigard, Ore.) contributed on the short relay and scored in the 400 at the NWC Meet in 2009.
Jaela Dinsmore

(So., Bonney Lake, WA). Leading the way in the short sprints is Neal Howard (So., Seattle, Wash.), who placed in both the 100 and 200 at last year’s conference championships and ran a key leg on the All-Conference relay team. Winger ran away from the field in the 400 to win his first conference crown in the long sprint. He also anchored the 4 x 400-meter team that finished third at the NWC Meet. Trevor May (Jr., Florence, Ore.) will lead the hurdlers into the season. He was fifth in the NWC in the 110-meter hurdles last season. May also scored in the high jump and the triple jump at last year’s NWC Meet. May is part of a strong multi-event group that will be led by Evin Colignon (Jr., Poulsbo, Wash.). Colignon improved in the decathlon by 1,087 points last season to record an NCAA provisional qualifying score of 6,060 points. Joining Colignon and May will be Brandt Nevin (Jr., Eagle Point, Ore.), who was an NCAA provisional qualifier in the javelin and scored at the NWC Meet with a third place finish in the pole vault.
Throws Men: Leading the way in the throws will be David Oppat (Jr., Beaverton, Ore.) and Josh Clothier (Jr., Walla Walla, Wash.), who both scored in the shot put and discus at last year’s NWC Championships. Also scoring in the NWC last year were Steven Collins (Jr., Zillah, Wash.) in the hammer throw and Nevin in the javelin. Women: The women will be led by two-time NWC shot put champion Christina Edholm (Sr., Pleasanton, Calif.). Matt McGuirk Head Coach
Matt McGuirk is in his seventh year as the head track and field coach at Willamette University and is in his 11th year on the coaching staff. He was named NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year in 2004 (men) and 2007 (women). In both 2004 and 2005, the Willamette men’s team ended the season by bringing home NCAA trophies for Top 4 finishes. In the Northwest Conference, the Bearcats have set a high bar of excellence by winning 10 of last 12 men’s and women’s team titles since 2004. At Willamette, McGuirk and his staff have coached 23 athletes to 45 All-America performances. They have helped WU athletes win 253 All-Conference awards. One of McGuirk’s top athletes was seven-time NCAA National Champion Nick Symmonds, who won the 1,500 three times and the 800 four times. Symmonds competed at the 2008 Olympics, where he won his preliminary heat to reach the semifinals. He took first place in the 800 at the Olympic Trials and has placed second at the U.S. Outdoor Championships twice. He has won two titles in the 800 at the U.S. Indoor Championships.

Among McGuirk’s proudest achievements is coaching three Bearcats (Jacob Stout, Aaron Hollingshead and Scott Overby) to All-American status at the 2004 NCAA Championships in the steeplechase, his primary race as a collegiate and professional runner. Prior to his arrival at Willamette, McGuirk was the first head coach at Wilsonville High School and built the cross country program from the ground up. In only its fifth year of existence, the school won its first State cross country title. Since then, Wilsonville has annually been one of the top Class 3A programs in Oregon. McGuirk is a native of Eugene, Ore. After completing a decorated high school career at South Eugene HS, McGuirk embarked upon an excellent college career at the University of Oregon. At U of O, he became a member of a select group by lettering eight times in cross country and track & field. McGuirk also put his name in the Oregon record books by racing to All-America status in the steeplechase in 1984, helping the Ducks win the NCAA outdoor track and field national championship. He graduated from the University of Oregon with a bachelor’s degree. He majored in Finance and Marketing. McGuirk has shown an ability to transfer his athletic experiences into true coaching expertise, allowing dedicated student-athletes to realize immediate results while working toward long-term goals.

“Willamette is the ideal place for a student who is looking for high quality academics and athletics. It’s my honest belief that if an individual chooses Willamette and decides to be successful in and out of the classroom, the opportunity will be provided. The philosophy of my staff is to simply impart the best advice, information and opportunities to allow student-athletes to be great in whatever they want to achive” 2010 BEARCAT TRACK & FIELD — Matt McGuirk

Bush’s Pasture Park Bush’s Pasture Park covers 90.5 acres and is just two blocks from the Willamette University campus. It is a public city park and is highly utilized by the Willamette community and by the citizens of Salem. Professors take their classes to the park to conduct scientific surveys or to perform ecological restoration projects. Students take breaks from studying to exercise in the park or have a picnic. A total of four Willamette sports call the park home. Baseball plays at Spec Keene Stadium, football plays at McCulloch Stadium, and track and field hosts meets at Charles Bowles Track. The cross country teams use the entire park for training and for home meets, including the Charles Bowles Invitational. The bark trail around the perimeter of the park is approximately 1.5 miles, making it a great place for Bearcat runners to complete an easy run or a full workout. Races at Bush’s Pasture Park are ideal for the spectator as well since there are many vantage points to see the action and cheer, as runners move through the fast, beautiful course.
Minto-Brown Park
2010 BEARCAT TRACK & FIELD
Although Willamette University is located in the heart of Salem, Bearcat runners love the fact that it takes just five minutes to hit the trail leading to Minto-Brown Island Park. The Willamette River makes up one of the borders of the park. When winter rains come, the river often overflows its banks and pours out into the park, turning it into an island. The park itself, just about two miles from the track, is the perfect place for long runs and workouts. While many of the 20 miles of paths are paved, a bit of exploration and adventure can lead to the soft surfaces of bark paths that runners crave. This 900-acre park doubles as a Wildlife Refuge, so keep your eyes peeled for great blue herons and beavers. The trails wind through orchards, fields, forests and a dog park. Even when the parking lots are full, Minto-Brown is the place to go for those seeking seclusion. In the front of the park, you’ll find plenty of other runners, walkers and bikers, but once you delve into the deeper trails, it feels like you have the place to yourself!
