Information about how and when to register and registration fees is available on the Crafts Center website: ncsu.edu/crafts. Click on the Register for Classes link in the navigation bar on the left. Registrations must be made in person, mailed in, or deposited in our drop box. We cannot accept registrations via phone or e-mail.

An introductory class perfectly suited for NC State students, alumni and the community who wish to visually explore a few memorable sites on campus while learning the art of B&W photography! On the first evening your instructor will provide impromptu instruction as she leads the class around campus where you will learn to compose the light and motion to be captured in SLR film cameras. Bring your own camera or use a Crafts Center loaner! Students will process their exposed film and spend the remainder of this class camped out in the darkroom exploring the traditional B&W printing process. Students in this hands-on class will have the opportunity to create keepsake visual memories of life on our campus. Visit Katy’s website: katyswalls.tumblr.com.

Clay

Participants must be age 14 or older. Crafts Center classes are extracurricular, noncredit classes. All clay classes include a pass for access to the studio for the current semester. The clay studio is available for use without taking a class; see Studio Use Fees for more information. Would you like to learn how to work on the pottery wheel? This class covers fundamentals of throwing basic forms: wedging, centering, pulling & shaping walls to make cylinder forms, mugs, bowls and vases. Learn to trim and glaze to create finished pots. Practice time outside of class is strongly suggested to develop throwing skills. Supply fee includes one 25# bag of clay. HaNDBUIlDING 101

Supply fee Instructor: Jennifer Siegel No experience necessary. Coiling, soft and hard slab construction, and extruding are the main $18 methods of handbuilding this beginner level class introduces. Students will create functional as Class fee well as sculptural forms, such as small bowls, plates, and lidded boxes. Surface decoration I = $50 through slips, stains, and wax, as well as glazing, will be a significant aspect of this class. Instructor: Edge Barnes For both the potter who wants to throw BIG stuff as well as the one who's reached a plateau in size and wants to move up to the next level. Instruction will include a variety of methods for making larger vessels as well as how to handle more clay and get more out of what you already can manage to throw. From learning the various camera controls to exercising the options of how and when they are best used, students in this nuts and bolts class will gain the confidence needed to capture that perfect instant. Learn to use your own SLR camera or use one of our Nikon D3000 loaners in order to get the most out of this series of hands-on discussions and photo shoots. tHe seVeNtH aNNUal NC state PINHOle Camera CHalleNGe

Instructor: Katy Walls Supply fee Now Open to EVERYONE 18 years or older: Grab a friend or family member and I = $2 register for this fun weekend of picture taking. It’s a magical process and a great II & III = $10 way to see campus life through a different “lens.”

Build Your Camera: Bring one or even two well-made light-tight containers anytime from 3:00 9:00 pm Thursday, September 10, or Friday, September 11, to make your cameras. Oatmeal boxes, shoe boxes, Altoid cans, metal tins of all types and even a small pumpkin have been transformed into cameras in the past…use your imagination! Plan on spending an hour to make your camera!

Take Your Pictures: Drop by any time on the Challenge Days - Saturday, September 12 and Sunday, September 13, from 9:30 am - 4:00pm (preferably early in the day). We advise that you come early and make a day of it! You’ll load your camera with photographic paper, practice a little, and go anywhere on campus to take your pictures. Then, head back to the Crafts Center to process your own original prints. You can take as many pictures as you wish until the 4:00 pm stop time. Wear good shoes, you’ll be doing lots of walking!

Add some color to your world! Learn to cut, foil and solder flat glass using the Tiffany copper foil method while making a simple sun catcher. Students in this beginning level class will also create an 8” x 11” panel using a pattern of their choice. The supply fee includes glass and materials used to make the sun catcher and panel. An introductory class. Create mosaic patterns of stained glass to be fused or slumped into jewelry components, small plates and bowls. Color your jewelry in this ancient art form that fuses glass to metal. Students will create several one-of-a-kind pendants using fine silver, powdered enamels, wires, and gold and silver foils. After building your image and following multiple trips through the hot kiln, you’ll be amazed as the beauty unfolds during the final steps of grinding and polishing. All skill levels are welcome. Suitable for all skill levels. Work with needle and thread using a variety of glass beads to explore simple, yet elegant, bead weaving techniques. We’ll warm up by weaving a herringbone bracelet using Super Duo beads. Next, we’ll make two lovely necklaces adorned with pendants. We’ll peyote weave around a Rivoli for one necklace and use a netting technique to create a Star of David for the other. Instructor: Kirk Adam For beginners only. An excellent class for those who have never painted. Learn about composition, value, materialism, space, volume, techniques, and color. Students will work from still life to learn skills and then have the opportunity to paint their desired subjects. Have you ever wanted to print your own design on a T-shirt or print cool posters? In this class you'll learn the basics to do just that. We'll cover things such as creating designs, making silkscreens, applying emulsions, exposing the screen, and printing techniques. No experience necessary, just an open mind to let creativity flow. In addition to the supply fee paid at registration, students are responsible for providing their own additional supplies and will receive a supply list upon registration. For the painter with experience in acrylics who wants to improve their skills and master more! Each week explore different acrylic painting exercises, learn different techniques, and refine your skill as you bring confidence into your new artwork possibilities. For NC State students only. No experience needed. Intensely hands-on! Make a custom-sized longboard skateboard you can ride and enjoy for years. Students will learn to laminate plys of Baltic birch into the necessary complex curves. The form will then be cut with the band saw, drilled, routed and sanded to final shape. By the end of the three classes, you will have a finished longboard deck ready for wheels.

Instructor: Leon Harkins For all skill levels. Learn this traditional form of ornamental carving in which a design is incised directly into the wood surface. Using a one tool approach, the class will be introduced to the fundamentals of design, carving technique and tool care. I = $17 Would you like to learn to play the guitar? For both electric and acoustic guitar, students II = $30 in this introductory class will build the basic foundation of chords and rhythm needed to play their favorite songs. No prior knowledge of music is required! (The Crafts Center has III = $33 three electric guitars for use during class by the first three students to reserve one with registration.) Repeat students welcome. Section A: Monday evenings, 5:00 - 6:00 pm, for 6 weeks, from August 24 – October 5 (skip Sept. 7) Section B: Wednesday evenings, 5:00 - 6:00 pm, for 6 weeks, from August 26 – September 30

sCrOll saw ImaGery

Instructor: Maria Chang Puzzles, portraiture, and layer-built imagery - all of these can be created out of colorful woods with the help of the scroll saw. Gain confidence in scroll sawing as you work to complete a basic project. Once the machine is mastered, you will explore more advanced techniques, work with more advanced patterns, and even create imagery of your own design. I n s t r u c t o r : D a v i d Tr u e b l o o d $24 Working with 12/4” poplar blanks, you’ll machine cut mortises before band sawing the Class fee signature reverse “S” curve common to the Queen Anne cabriole styled leg. The real fun I = $50 comes in the hand sculpting needed to shape and refine the elegant knee and spoon foot. II = $90 After completing four matching legs, you’ll tenon the aprons before final assembly. It’ll III = $100 be up to you to add a padded top of your own.
