2023 First-Year Student Schedule

WELCOME, CLASS OF 2027!

As you prepare to start your college career, you will have many experiences similar to other new students, starting with Bear Beginnings: Fall Welcome. The orientation events are intended to provide a shared experience and foster community among the Class of 2027 and the entire WashU community.

At the same time, WashU recognizes the individuality of its students, and we encourage you to tailor your orientation experience to your own personal needs and preferences. Your Fall Welcome experience comprises of programs designed for the entire first-year class, events related to your academic division, and additional activities tailored to your specific interests.

Each undergraduate school has its own set of programs for students enrolled in that academic division. Please pay special attention to REQUIRED EVENTS because they may be related to academic requirements. Required events are marked with an asterisk. Also, take note of non-school-affiliated programs, such as the WashU Life series, social events, and residential college activities and floor meetings. We strongly advise you to participate in all programs to get the most out of your Fall Welcome experience.

Throughout the schedule, the following abbreviations are used to indicate programs and events for each academic division:

Internships are an important part of your engineering experience and there are many career paths for engineering students. Hear from current students in various engineering majors about their internship experiences, including how they found their internships and how their internship may have solidified or changed their career goals. Also learn more about the support services that McKelvey Engineering and Center for Career Engagement offer students for internships, cooperative experiences, and job search. This will be a great opportunity to hear about real-life applications of engineering.

Come out for a comedy show featuring comedian Victoria Vincent! Victoria Vincent is a Columbus, OH native and a rising star in the Chicago comedy scene. She is a healthcare worker and comedian. Victoria is one of the Just for Laughs New Faces 2022 and a regular feature at Zanies and Laugh Factory Chicago. The host and producer of Don’t Tell Comedy Chicago has opened for the likes of Cameron Esposito, Hannah Berner, Bobcat Goldthwait, and was featured in the Chicago Reader. Hosted by Campus Life.

WUSA Hours are a university tradition that occur every week throughout the academic year, except for breaks. They typically involve games, chatting, and communitybuilding activities. WUSA Hours will be from 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM on the first two Thursdays of the semester. Your WUSA will work with the floor to determine the best day and time for the gathering after the first two weeks.

During this session, you will prepare for your first week of classes by engaging in conversations around academic success habits, thinking about your calendar and schedule, participating in a first-day-of-class priorities activity, and reflecting on your academic goals.

FIND YOUR CLASSES TOURS

Bring your class schedule to the Clocktower to walk the campus with a WUSA! During this session, WUSAs will help you find your classrooms, talk with you about nearby dining facilities to help you plan your first days, and help you navigate campus. Tours leave every 10 minutes in smaller groups. The last tour will leave at 3:30 PM.

WUSA SMALL GROUP: OUR WASHINGTON AND PRE-CONVOCATION*

See communication from your WUSA for specific locations. Meet once again with your WUSA small group. In this session, you will reflect on your lessons learned during Fall Welcome, engage in an appreciation activity, and participate in a tradition, Our Washington, before reconvening with your residential college in preparation for Convocation.

A long-standing university tradition, Convocation marks your official start at WashU. Chancellor Andrew D. Martin will be joined by Provost Beverly Wendland and Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Anna Gonzalez in sharing their words of wisdom for new WashU students.

PARTY IN THE PARK

Immediately following Convocation, join the Chancellor’s procession for entertainment and light refreshments.

RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE TRADITIONS

Experience the first tradition of the year and get to know some of the student and full-time staff in your community! Each residential college tradition includes some type of snack and/or drink as well as a chance to meet other individuals in your community. Hosted by Residential Life.

RELIGIOUS, SPIRITUAL, AND ETHICAL SERVICES AND EVENTS

The Office of Religious, Spiritual, and Ethical Life (ORSEL) offers connections to a wide variety of religious organizations on campus and in the St. Louis area. Please reach out to ORSEL to get connected with campus ministry groups and St. Louis organizations.

It often happens that religious services occur during Fall Welcome. It is our goal that students will be able to fully observe their faith, practices, and traditions without missing important information. Students should reach out to their WUSA if they plan to participate in a religious observance during an orientation event to ensure they have access to any information they miss.
