Tuk Tuk of the Month Nap Lover There are individuals in The Charming City that you know you’ll enjoy the moment you come in contact; Mr. Robin was one of them. At his suggestion, we met at Happy Pink Elephant Pizza, the spot where Robin generally waits for his customers. I was greeted with a gigantic smile and eagerness to chat. Considering Robin’s work starts at seven am and ends at nine pm seven days a week, his energy was astounding. After ordering a round of orange Fantas, his personal favorite, we started in on the trials and joys of working as a Tuk Tuk driver. Although faced with the difficulties of having little time with his four children and wife as they live in Kampong Speu and the struggle to continue his English education because of time constraints, even though he does pick up some English from his clients, Robin’s positivity and lighthearted disposition resonate as he affirmed us that every single one of his customers have been courteous and honest and that he truly appreciates his career.

word of mouth for clients. When asked if he ever has issues with territory in the city, he explained that he stays in his area unless taking his customer somewhere else and returns to “Happy Backpackers” and that other drivers do the same. We shared a good laugh over the naps he sometimes takes in his Tuk Tuk and he more than happily posed for us in this manner, laughing almost too much for us to even get the shot. Next time you’ve imbibed on the Happy Pizza strip, give Robin a ring. He’s bound to bring an even wider smile to your face.

He mentioned that I should try my hand at Tuk Tuk driving, but he laughed for a good minute when I explained that I would most likely drive it into the Mekong. Upon this, he assured proudly that he had never been in any sort of accident, from the start of his driving career as a motodop six years ago and then the past four years driving a Tuk Tuk. The most important thing for him is to stay busy and that he relies purely on

The dance program also sees that they learn team skills, and a sense of respect, loyalty and family. These skills that many take for granted, are great tools for empowering youth to grow

ur dentist

Writer Tom Stall

Dr. Mori Dental Clinic Teeth Samurai I was in Europe when the agony struck. The pain and the horror, and I was on holiday. Normally, in this type of situation I’m the kind of person who says, “We’ll take care of it later”, but the pain was too much and “later” meant Cambodia. My dentist told me I would need at least five appointments - it was that bad. “It’s better that we do nothing now and you take care of it when you get back.” Seriously?? I come to you during my ten-day vacation and that’s all you’ve got. Fine, just give me some pain killers. Please. My plane landed and as I started looking for a dentist, I remembered my job in an orphanage in the countryside. We had a day, once a month: hair cut – lice check – dentist day. No, all three were not done by the same person. I won’t say it. I WON’T. After all, there are more dental clinics than private English schools in Cambodia. And that, my friends, is a real feat! Sorry, it can’t be right.

I started thinking I didn’t really need my teeth. They have nice soups here. I took my last antibiotic pill and then went on the quest of a lifetime: to find a decent dentist in Cambodia. Finally, I heard about Dr Mori, a Japanese dentist and Kendo lover (a Japanese martial art, c.f. picture). “He’s really good, you’ll see.” When I got to Dr Mori’s clinic, I felt immediately at ease. It’s not that I am afraid of pain, but I prefer to stay on guard. His calm way of talking and explaining everything reassured me. I thought I would like to hang out with this guy, even feeling sorry at the end of our consultation, as I had been enjoying my time there. “It’s already over? Wait, I think you missed a tooth.” He’s the kind of person I want to be friends with on Facebook. I made a pact with myself: if he does a good job, I’ll add him. _ 12

It turns out Dr Mori has 25 years of experience and used to run his own private clinic in Yokohama, Japan. He opened his practice in Phnom Penh last February. Why? Dental tourism, he explained. That’s a concept I was not familiar with. I knew regular tourism like going to Disneyland (wohow!). Dental tourism, I didn’t. Basically, let’s say you’re from the US, Japan or somewhere in Europe, and you want a ceramic tooth. At home you’ll pay $3000, while here the same quality treatment will cost you just $500. Dr Mori showed me how they use 3D modeling to create your new teeth (everything is done on the computer) and the teeth are then built to fit into your mouth perfectly, using technology available in Cambodia. Done. If you need any information, to see it with your own eyes, or ask questions, feel free to check his Facebook page, website or contact him by email (see the info box below).

After five sessions, my teeth were perfectly fixed, and I even have one filled with Kevlar. True story. Come at me now, you gun people! Oh, and it didn’t cost me an arm and a leg - just between $10 and 20 per visit, never more. And Dr Mori and I are now friends on Facebook. ur band

Writer Samir Cheriaa

Play Like Jimi Jimi’s Spirit is Still Alive One of the most interesting and probably most inspirational period of Jimi Hendrix’s musical career was when he formed the Band of Gypsies. Although many artists imitate and honor the music of Jimi Hendrix, very few of them, if any, reach the spirit of the music that was created in that time period. ‘Play Like Jimi’ is one of them. The group is spearheaded by legendary rock guitarist Niki Buzz, formerly part of Vendetta and M-80, with The Wailers’ Winston Scholsberg on drums and Martin Seij on bass and vocals. Niki’s musical understanding of Hendrix charisma and style was evident when he became the guitarist for the legendary Curtis Knight who discovered Jimi Hendrix. For over 20 years, Niki performed with Curtis until he died in 1999 in which Curtis stated “Niki’s the best guitarist that I have ever performed with since Jimi Hendrix!” Curtis Knight moved to Europe in the early 90s and asked Niki to join him in 1993 for a European tour. That’s where they met Winston whom Curtis felt would be a great drummer for the band.

When interviewed Winston Scholsberg said: “Playing with legends like Curtis Knight and Niki Buzz was great because when they were on stage Rock and Roll never felt this great. I could really feel the friendship between them. For my first tour with Curtis in 1994/95 I called my tour manager John Kohl and asked him if he knew Curtis Knight. He said : ‘yes I saw him in the early seventies performing on stage’. I told him I met Curtis the week before in Amsterdam. He started to laugh and said : ‘Don’t joke with me, Curtis is dead.’ I said no man I’m putting a band together and I want you to set us up a tour in Austria. Five weeks later we went on a 14 day tour and John Kohl could not have been happier to see his idol perform on stage.” Niki Buzz says: “In one particular show in the Netherlands, the stage was downstairs and the dressing room upstairs. So you could literally take the stairs from the dressing room and end up on the stage. Curtis missed a step, and started to tumble down the stairs and rolled down the stairs, and continued to roll onto the

stage grabbing the microphone while he was rolling and started singing the song! This was simply amazing, for a 70-year-old man in his condition.” “We really want to concentrate on his music, and share with the audience the spirit in which he wrote and performed. We do not play Hendrix songs note for note, anyone can do that. All you have to do is rehearse. What we do is capture the soul and spirit of the music, which is why people walk away feeling that they experienced Jimi.” To celebrate Jimi’s 70th birthday, ‘Play Like Jimi’ will be on tour in Asia in late November and will pass by

Phnom Penh’s awesome Rock’n Blues Bar: the Memphis Pub. This band is so close to the sound of the Band of Gypsies that you will be in complete amazement when you will see them on stage, Friday November 30th.

Plastic Bag Situation Phnom Penh is an exciting city – there is such great street food to eat and shopping to enjoy, but at the end of the day it is not uncommon to return home with a mountain of plastic bags. Clothes and art from the Russian market get popped in plastic bags, street food is wrapped in multiple plastic bags and fruit and vegetables, whether bought from a fancy supermarket or a simple road side stall, all get separately placed in individual plastic bags.

What to do? Simply take a good, reusable carry bag or basket out shopping with you and every time someone tries to put your purchase in to a cheap disposable plastic bag say “ot sbaong au kuun” - no bag thank you. The Governor of Phnom Penh agrees. In February he called on all businesses to minimise the use of plastic bags in favour of reusable bags and baskets. But his word has not yet spread.

However, the plastic bags that give us a few minutes of convenience will be on this earth, in one form or another, for an eternity. Whether dumped on the street or in landfill, burnt or washed in to drains and rivers, plastic ain’t so fantastic. Plastic does not biodegrade. In landfill it takes up precious space. Burning plastic solves this problem, but releases toxic fumes which are damaging to our health. Dumped on the street, plastic bags can block drains during heavy rains before eventually washing out to sea where dolphins, fish and turtles mistake them for food and slowly starve.

There are lots of strong, inexpensive, reusable shopping bags and baskets for sale on the street in Phnom Penh. The ones made from recycled sacks are particularly good because they have been diverted from landfill. The hand woven baskets are beautiful and natural. So if you love the Cambodian environment and want to do something small and simple every day to protect it, take a reusable bag or basket when shopping and say “ot sbaong au kuun.” Reusable bags or baskets are found anywhere around Russian and Central Market or in several shops on street 240.

ur style

Writer Anna Mischke

New Girl’s Necessities in Phnom Penh It’s the small things that attract me when it comes to styling, whether it be a gilded spiked bracelet, vintage Harley tank, or an oversized boyfriend cashmere sweater; I like things fairly simple. There are a few items that made their way into my 22 kilo suitcase, that have made leaving the rainiest state in America, to hot and humid Cambodia manageable. Giant Sunglasses: One of my favorite things being in Phnom Penh are the tuk tuk rides, day and night. What I don’t enjoy is dust and debris flying in my eyes. Shield them with a nice pair of large lensed aviators, teashades, or wayfarers. Kill three birds with one stone (or a pair of Ray Bans) by protecting those windows into your soul from dust, UV rays, and covertly hiding hungover eyes. The Perfect Tee: One thing I’ll invest on is a basic, solid colored oversized tee. They’re go-tos on a hot day or easily dressed up with a piece of costume jewelry. It’s worth it to spend a bit more on a Vince or T by Alexander Wang, but it’s hard to compete with a worn-in men’s HANES tee.

Bonus: when wearing one of these you can leave your pants unbuttoned in the event of overeating steak and no one will be the wiser A Leather Clutch: Bag snatching is a topic brought up by the women of Phnom Penh regularly, with reason. Carrying a clutch big enough to hold your martini money, mobile phone, mints, notepad and a lipstick yet small enough to hold close to your body on a moto ride makes it a lot more difficult for a thief to grab. Plus, it’s way easier to get down dancing without a gigantic saddlebag weighing you down. Solid Pair of Boots: Cowboy. Motorcycle. Combat. I never thought I would wear boots as much as I have here considering the heat, but when you’re sloshing around puddles after a downpour, avoiding cockroaches skittering across your toes, or getting beer unceremoniously spilled on your feet it’s nice to have some serious coverage. Who can be bothered to teeter around on six inch pleather stilts when there are cats to be chased? Pictures by Kyle Johnson & Adrian John Ragasa kjphotos.com

The French Element Damn Girl! Looking Good! do’s scheduled for Friday for a special event”, he says. At The French Element, you will find the most sought-after treatments. “I brought back a special device from France, and so now we are the only place in the city to do IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) depilation.” Another treatment currently hot in salons in the US is Brazilian Keratin, and Jerome is already a specialist.

After managing some of the best salons in Beijing for six years, Jérome and Olek embarked on a Cambodian journey and opened The French Element two years ago. Jerome takes care of the hair salon, while Olek runs the beauty parlour. The setting and music are trendy, and customers speak Chinese, French, English, Spanish, Italian or Khmer during their manicure, setting quite the cosmopolitan mood in the salon. “I spend at least one afternoon each month here,” confesses a customer who has come in to dye her hair, getting a foot massage while she waits. “Hmmm, yes… at LEAST!” answers Olek, laughing.

“In the salon, we only use popular brands like l’Oreal and Schwartzkopf or Ahava, the first beauty treatment ” he explains. Ladies (and gentlemen!), here then is a beauty spot to discover or discover again. Himawari Hotel tel: 077 283 332 www.thefrenchelement.com

ur artist

Philong Sovan Philong Sovan is one of Cambodia’s promising artist of this generation, despite his initial ambivalence to photography. Whilst working for a video production NGO, he was summoned to participate in a photography workshop. “I didn’t understand why photography needed to be learned,” but after only few hours of study, he fell in love with the subject and has never looked back. Philong was hired to take pictures at Photo Phnom Penh (Photo festival), his first report as a photographer. His obvious talent is probably what opened the door to The Phnom Penh Post where he began as a freelancer. Working at The Post was a rich experience which gave him the opportunity to learn quickly. “With the press, everything needs to go very fast”, he explains. Covering everyday events, crisis, and violent protests like those in Bangkok last year, he also understood how important it was to bring new pictures everyday, and the race to get the cover. This led him to think about breaking photojournalism rules by adding an artistic element to it. During these three years of collaboration with The Post, he continued to work on his personal projects. As he was watching someone working on his laptop one day, he

came up with idea of using the screen light in his art. “It was revealing interesting expressions on the skin.” He went to the countryside with this idea and for the first time he lit the faces of people by the laptop screen. Philong’s work continued to evolve and he kept working with different effects of light on the skin. He decided next to put the headlight of his motorbike on people in the provinces during the night. At this time the moto’s light was the only thing bringing them out of the darkness. “When the light comes down on them, you can capture the activity you won’t be able to see without it. By taking a picture of that moment you can see what’s inside them, through their illuminated faces.” He showed this work at the Photo Quay exhibition in 2011 in Paris and has since joined the Lumière school, a prestigious establishment; a program sponsored by the French Embassy. He is already eager to bring back his experiences to Cambodia. “There is a lack of photography schools in Cambodia and I want my people to have the opportunity to develop their skills and realize their own personal projects”. After an operation in Istanbul ends in disaster, James Bond is missing and presumed to be dead, and the identities of every active undercover MI6 agent are leaked onto the internet. For over 30 years, Ralph has been doing the same job and has become tired of being the villain. Wanting to prove he can be a decent individual and not just a villain, Ralph escapes his game through a power cord and lands in Hero’s Duty, a light-gun shooter game where he helps the game’s hero, Sergeant Calhoun, battle against “Cy-Bugs”. Ralph meets Vanellope von Schweetz, who has learned that her game is faced with a dire threat that could affect the entire arcade, and one that Ralph may have inadvertently started.

ur opinion

Writer Romi Grossberg

Helmets On! It’s Worth Messing Your Hair Did you know that the passenger on a motodop is less likely to get injured or die in a moto accident? Do you actually believe that? It astounds me the number of people, westerners included, not wearing a motorbike helmet. Could you imagine telling the police in Australia, America, U.K. or wherever, “it’s just a short trip”, or “but I didn’t want to ruin my hair”? Would you dare get on a motorbike in your home country without a helmet? Wouldn’t dream of it. Do you really just not know that traffic accidents are the number 1 killer in Cambodia? In case you missed this, The Phnom Penh Posts’ (Sept 28th) article stated that “traffic accidents killed more than five people every day and injured an average of 40 per day in 2011…” or are you somehow ‘exempt’ from that? Do you have a magic wand? Over the last five years accidents have increased by 217% with fatalities almost doubling. Of those, almost 90% were motorbike drivers, passengers, bicyclists or pedestrians. Still think you are exempt?

Are expats and tourists in Cambodia really so naïve to the facts? Or just too lazy to buy or carry a helmet? Most of us come from countries where there is no longer even a need for motorbike helmet campaigns because it is a given. Yet we arrive here and all common sense goes out the window. Going to a decent restaurant and having a meal and drink in Phnom Penh costs about $12… the same that it costs to buy a motorbike helmet. Yes just $12 can save your life! Hmmm, let’s try a different tactic. Think of the person you are most close to in Cambodia, the one you love and trust, go drinking with and away for weekends with. Now picture them having to call your family in your home country and say: “I am really sorry but your son/daughter died today in a moto accident … and no they were not wearing a helmet, and yes that was by choice”.
