Tuk Tuk of the Month Michael Phelps Drives a Tuk-tuk The next time you’re stressed out because you have a lunch meeting at Raffles, a hair appointment at three, need to send a dozen emails, and have cocktails with the girls at seven I’d like you to keep in mind Mr. Narak Kun. Narak begins his day at seven, Monday through Saturday, as the assistant coach for swimming at iCAN British International School until four, then drives his Tuk Tuk from five until ten, maybe eleven at night. After his normal coaching schedule on Saturdays, he continues on to ICS School until three where he continues his swimming coaching. Sundays are his day of most rest, where he coaches at Sunrise, an NGO for orphaned children, for four hours in the morning.

Although Narak is new to Tuk Tuk driving, having only started three months ago, he is setting up his trade professionally with business cards and although he’s only studied English for the past three years, has quite excellent understanding of the language. He is available on call, but spends most of his time near Sothearos awaiting customers. Narak’s hopes to continue his entrepreneurship are apparent and with his perseverance, I believe Phnom Penh will one day be dining at his establishment and seeing the names of his trainees on trophies.

The desire to support his family of six in Kampong Cham moved Narak to Phnom Penh and keeps him determined to continue his more than busy schedule in hopes to one day open his own restaurant and become head coach of a competitive swimming team. On the path he’s currently taking, I see future achievements even beyond what he may hope for. A previous member of the Cambodian National Swimming Team, competing in Thailand five times although training has been difficult in Cambodia, his drive and dedication prove him to be extremely successful in his endeavours; the boys team he coaches have been victorious in their most recent competition, placing first through third in breaststroke and the one girl he trains in second place.

ur chill place

Writer Antony Hamon

Le Jardin Phnom Penh is filled with a great variety of cool places. However, even the most adventurous will struggle to stumble on an oasis of calm within such an urban jungle. Le Jardin is definitely one of them and it should find its way to feature among your favorite addresses. Established in 2007 in an exceptional setting, this café/ restaurant/ice cream parlour quickly became a perfect spot to chill. The big tables under the pergola are a welcoming prospect for a quiet dinner with friends or family (Le Jardin boasts a large playground with a slide and sandbox). On the other side of the garden, under a shady haven of trees, you can rest in big loungy sofas. It is the perfect place to spend time with a book in one hand and an homemade ice-cream in the other during a sunny afternoon, or to share a cocktail at happy hour between 6 and 8. During the evening, sweet candlelight, subtle decoration and a jazzy mood easily allows one to forget Le Jardin’s central BKK1 location. Just as an idea, this might be a perfect spot for a first date...

Coming straight from Spain where he managed a restaurant for 12 years, French chef Dominique turned around the menu, spicing it up with Mediterranean flavours. Come and discover the free homemade gaspacho (check out this month’s WUPP recipe). You can now enjoy your lunch break and fly away for two hours as the restaurant recently launched a new lunch set menu with prices quite keen to make your wallet smile. Even if Le Jardin cultivates a relaxed atmosphere, the event schedule is quite busy. For December, the team has announced special evenings, exhibitions, a jazz concert with the band Balgass and the return in January of the “Sunday Family Sessions” with Kheltica and also the Phnom Penh Hippie Orchestra. WUPP will also officially launch the WUPP After Works with a first Spanish themed event on December 12th at Le Jardin. Come and taste chef Dominique’s amazing tapas with a cold glass of Sangria. ur ngo

Writer Antony Hamon

Enfants du Mekong Help a Child Today, He Will Help His Country Tomorrow Enfants Du Mékong has been helping children in South-East Asia since 1958. Individual sponsorship of disadvantaged kids and corporate donations are the backbone of the organization, which is now able to sponsor 22 000 children and support 60 000 of them in 7 countries: Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Philippines, Burma, China, and of course Cambodia. EDM currently manages 580 programs to ease access to school and professional development, and access to clean water and good nutrition. In Cambodia, the organization’s headquarters is based in Sisophon in the Banteay Meanchey province where more than 3000 children, between 4 and 26 years old, benefit from EDM’s help. Every year, the NGO builds more than 10 schools and sets up new programs everywhere in the country to put education in motion for all. Opened in 2010, the Christophe Mérieux program center of Phnom Penh welcomes more than 200 students every day. Registered in the city’s universities and housed in a center, they are the future lawyers, engineers, pharmacists, teachers and web designers of Cambodia. Every day they attend 2 to 4 hour classes for private lessons in the center, studying French, English, Chinese, computing, philosophy, sports, human sciences

and professional life simulation: enough teaching to turn these young disadvantaged kids into tomorrow’s Cambodian elite. After one year of preparation, the Christophe Mérieux Center launched a new program last September specializing in preparation for professional careers. Lucie, a French volunteer, manages this program. “Corporate investment is crucial to keep developing Cambodian youth’s education. A part of my mission consists in convincing companies to support them as this program brings so many more chances to our students,” she says. Ladies and gentlemen, companies, HR departments, you now know where to look to find the perfect profile for an intern or a junior partner.

ur band

Writer Samir Cheriaa

Dub Addiction Cultural Shaker Dub Addiction is one of the most popular bands in Phnom Penh. Its Reggae Ragga Dub style is inspired by traditional Reggae such as Bob Marley’s, Lee Perry’s Ragga and dub bands High Tone. The Khmer musical legacy also plays an important role in their music. It’s been two years now that DA was formed in town. As I recently read on their new producer’s newsletter from Hong Kong, Metal Postcard Records (MPR), DA “is the brainchild of European producer Jan Müller, aka Professor Kinski, who brings together a disparate set of musicians, toasters and rappers based in Phnom Penh to form a collective that creates the most interesting take on dub in the region.” Indeed, “collective” and “interesting” fit perfectly with DA. First because the band counts ten artists from different musical backgrounds and origin, and also thanks to Professor Kinski, who gathered a mix of French, Senegalese and Khmer artists who create a very peculiar sound that makes it quite unique in the music industry. DA just signed with Metal Postcard Records (MPR) which tries as much as possible to work outside the

structures of the music industry. With MPR, DA recorded their brand new album, a collection of thirteen tunes in which every single member of the band brought his style and identity. The members of DA are Sebastien Adnot (FR) on bass, Toma Willen (FR) on drums, Khae Lhassan (FR) on keys and vocals and Professor Kinski (GE) on vocals and sound effects, but also the highly talented Chhen Chantrea (KH), who is primarily CTN’s official guitar player, the Ragga singer Okoro Elias Jefferson (NG) and the four Khmer singers, DJ Khla, MC Curly, Pou Khlaing and Nentum who balance their style between traditional Khmer singing style to Khmer Hip Hop. I met Toma and Jan at the Equinox right before their Gig on November 17th while the band was carrying out a sound-check. What’s the message of your lyrics? Toma - One of the singers, MC Curly, is an orphan. He grew up in the streets of Cambodia and was subjected to violence and drugs. At some point he had the choice of staying in that illegal environment or turning his energy into creation. He is now working in the cinematographic and musical sector. And that is what his lyrics are all about: children need to find another way, far away from

drug trafficking and other dirty businesses. They have to transform their energy into something positive. The other singer DJ Khla speaks about the development of Cambodia, Khmer pride, and everything else that could be positively highlighted in this country.

Any new projects in the future? We are currently in negotiations with music Festivals in Europe. After the official promotion has started, we will probably be touring to Vietnam, Australia, Europe... Of course, nothing has been confirmed yet.

What about the upcoming release of your second album? Jan - The name of the album is still secret, because it is still work in progress... We don’t know it yet. But what I can tell you is that it’s now on the way to the UK for mastering! It will be officially released in a couple of month, followed by regional promotion in Australia, America and Asia. Additionally to the album, we are going to release a 7th vinyl single on the same label.

Let’s hope the rest of the world doesn’t steal them away from us completely.

Phnom Penh

Kendo Club Phnom Penh is full of surprises. In the south of the city in a large and well-lit studio, about 20 students from all around the globe gather every week, ever since the club opened in 2009 to practice an impressive Japanese martial art, the Kendo. A quick look at the word Kendo will explain more than ten Wikipedia pages. ‘Ken’ in Japanese means sword, ‘Do’ means way. The Kendo is the way of the sword (ok Wikipedia says the same thing…), not the way to cut each other up, but a way of life based on discipline and self-development. The Kendo is not as ancient as most of the martial arts, and if it comes from the Samurai culture, the purpose is definitely not to damage or kill. It’s more of a philosophy about controlling one’s mind and emotions such as fear. Kendo is a simulation of a real fight, using a bamboo stick instead of deadly sharp swords. The fights are still pretty impressive; with their heavy armor, the fighters strike their sword with a precise hit on the opponent

while releasing energy through a powerful and noisy Ki (the ‘Street Fighter’ lovers will understand). In the end, it’s all about self-control and self-confidence. It develops concentration, smooth movement of the body and how to keep it cool when you face danger, as Itaru Mori, member of the club, explained : “If two opponents face each other, smiling cause they’re relaxed and confident, being at the top of their art, they will respect each other and not fight as they become one person out of respect. That’s the ultimate aim of Kendo and an important part of the Japanese culture.” Unfortunately, the Kingdom doesn’t host any tournament yet and the club, managed by Victor Aguayo, will have to promote this growing discipline to find its place among the abundance of fighting sports. One day maybe, your Tuk Tuk driver won’t offer to take you to a boxing fight, but to watch Kendo instead.

Lavau Wines : Good drop, Full stop

Scattered throughout rolling lush greenery, the Rhône valley vineyards stripe the hillsides with their symmetrical beauty. Scintillating lakes, stories of bandits from castle hangouts and just a hint of fresh local cheese in the air, this is truly a place of hidden gems. Nestled into the southern valleys, the Lavau winery has enjoyed six generations of rich soil, plump grapes and dedicated wine making. As the multiple award-winning Lavau wines take Phnom Penh’s scene by storm, we took the opportunity to clink glasses with the man behind the making. An experimentalist and leader of an emerging generation of young wine makers, Benoit Lavau seeks to add a twist to his wines by embroidering tradition with modernity. As the hues of his ancestor’s experience are stamped by discovery and curiosity for new flavours, one realises that these are not wine makers but artists. “We travel a lot, taste wines from all over the world, visit many wine regions, many different wine lovers from different countries” says Lavau. As the city of Phnom Penh continues to grow and ripen, an emerging community that choses wine over Angkor

suggests a growing trend for finding the diversity of enjoyable experience within a glass. Lavau paints a picture only few could resist – “I can imagine an afternoon in Phnom Penh, bedded on a lounger at the side of the pool, enjoying the flowery flavours of a white Côtes du Rhône, a perfect afternoon with friends”. As if the fiery hues of the sunset over the Mekong weren’t already enough, the spicy flavours of local food laced with Kampot pepper are well balanced by an intense, fruity Gigondas or Vacqueyras, Lavau advises. Practicing what he preaches, Benoit Lavau will often visit Phnom Penh to savour a good drop. Find him or his wines at the Booloom Booloom wine shop or Topaz restaurant for a full-bodied savoir-faire. www.lavau.eu For any product information, please contact their regional office info@redandwhite.net tel: 023 649 8999

ur health

Writer Romi Grossberg

Yoga! Phnom Penh Free Your Mind Walking through the quaint courtyard of the newly opened Yoga! Phnom Penh, you immediately feel relaxed. The yoga space is a gorgeous dark timber with plenty of natural light. Opened by none other than resident yogi’s Oskar and Alison who combined have taught over 40 years of yoga, the newest yoga place in town offers some new and interesting ideas. Starting this month, Oskar will begin Phnom Penh’s first ever men’s yoga classes. Oskar explains that whilst the benefits of yoga on men and women are mostly the same, men have a different balance between flexibility and strength and so need a different approach. Oskar and Alison both agree that many expats, men and women, are working in stressful jobs and yoga is a good way to unwind, relax, improve strength, flexibility and breathe. It is also great to compliment a regular gym work out, to recover from injury and prevent injury. Keep an eye out for new workshops too. Scars of Cambodia A Story With No Words If someone approached you in the street because you resembled their lost sister, would you stop and try to communicate with them? Would you later return to their village and devote the next stage of your life to bearing witness to their story? Photographer Emilie Arfeuil opted to stop. After her chance meeting with a 52 year old fisherman named Tut on the streets of his small village outside Kampot, she returned with Alexandre Liebert, a friend and director, and watched as Tut began to tell his personal story about the Khmer Rouge. The French duo provides a stage for Tut to share his experience in their work ‘Scars of Cambodia’ – a multimedia project comprised of a body of photographs, a thirty minute film, and an upcoming web documentary.

it was a relationship that did not involve a translator. As they explained, a translator was brought in only two or three times during the entire process, mainly to ensure that what had been interpreted was correct and to explain to Tut the next steps of the project. In the end, Emilie and Alexandre said the translator couldn’t really tell them anything that Tut hadn’t communicated while silent. Both photographer and director have agreed that, symbolically, the debut of their work must take place in Cambodia, and are ecstatic that ‘Scars of Cambodia’ will begin its international tour here. From their telling, however, the most important of the film’s screenings will be that done by Tut, alone.

Emilie and Alexandre found a unique skill in Tut’s ability to explain his story in great detail without ever relying upon words. Instead, an original cello score is the background as the full story of the trauma this man deals with becomes clear through his gestures, glances, habits, and, most hauntingly, the scars he bears and the tools he uses to mimic the actions of his torturers. Throughout the two months of filming, Emilie and Alexandre formed an intense and intimate relationship with Tut, even living with him in his home. Amazingly, _ 28

If he agrees after seeing his story reflected back on the screen, Emilie and Alexandre will rig up a sheet and a projector in a field outside his village. His community will be invited to this outdoor screening so that Tut might share his story with those whom he’s been living closest for the very first time.

Info :

The film portion of ‘Scars of Cambodia’ debuts at the Cambodia International Film Festival in December before opening at Bophana Center on December 22. The photography exhibition runs at Bophana Center from December 22 until January 5, with additional screenings of the film on December 27 and January 3. Sun Kang During one of my beginning weeks in Phnom Penh, an English woman came into my place of work and the first thing she barked at me was ‘why would you ruin yourself with those ?’, waving about at my tattoos. Instead of a sharp response about her own grave state of physicality, I gave her my brightest smile and replied “because I think they’re fun.” Opinions of tattoos go completely across the board : tacky, sexy, dangerous, ugly, exotic, cheap, beautiful, interesting... everyone is absolutely entitled to their own opinion of them. After my talks with Sun Kang, Korean tattoo master at Black Star, you may gain new perspective into the world of body modification and art. In Korea every young man must join the army for the minimum of 2 years unless they come from extreme poverty, are severely disabled, or heavily tattooed. For this reason, tattoo parlors are illegal so that men can’t go get tattooed to avoid being drafted. Another reason tattooing is so looked down upon the land of the morning calm is if one is tattooed it usually means they have status as a gangster. As a rule of thumb, heavily tattooed individuals have spent time in prison and when are re-

leased get inked to represent this period. Sun explained that if I went to Korea and they didn’t know I was a Westerner, they would “think I’m a very, very bad girl” or be “very afraid because I am daughter of Yakuza”. Sun began his apprenticeship with a Japanese tattoo master 17 years ago in Korea, regardless of the law. He had seen a tattooed individual and thought the piece had such beauty and artistry that he wanted to be able to create the same thing on other canvasses of skin. His passion for tattooing and their meanings are obvious and I respect the seriousness in which he takes his craft. His favorite style is traditional Japanese and although he does a fantastic job with other styles, admits he cannot do everything and will be honest about what he can and cannot do well. After two years of apprenticing and practicing on his own body, as testees were obviously hard to come by, Sun opened his own secret parlor in Korea. Ninety five percent of his clientele were gangsters and the favorite piece he’s done is a full torso, chest, and arm piece on a man who had served eleven years for murder. After eleven years of tattooing in Korea, he came to Cambodia for vacation and, like many of us, fell in love with the country. He decided he wanted

_ 30

to take a “quest” and instead of returning home, had all of his equipment shipped here. With no English or Khmer language skills, he created an entrepreneurship with a tattoo shop in Sihanoukville for a year with his current partners, Eddie Newman and Paul Ouk, and then moved to Phnom Penh where they have now run Black Star for 3 years. Considering Black Star is the only tattoo shop in the city that uses a professional grade autoclave, sanitation that passes Western standards, and the overall atmosphere of the shop is welcoming and clean, one can understand why his business does so well. Foreigners make up eighty percent of his clientele and the other twenty percent are Khmer. People have come from all over Cambodia, even the world, to get tattooed by Sun and some have called two to three months in advance to get booked for an appointment. He now has an apprentice of his own, Charly Han, who has proven to be just as skilled and interested in the craft and will continue learning until he can build his own clientele. Sun enjoys his current workspace as he’s the only artist at Black Star

at the moment who books many appointments and never wants to get overwhelmed to the point where he cannot perform at his highest, but may one day expand to a larger shop if he finds other artists skilled enough to join his team. Having found such a talented artist and interesting person, it will be a pleasure to grow my small collection of tattoos with Sun and look forward to designing my first large piece with him.

Paperdolls

Brunswick Street, Melbourne. Broadway to Sixth, New York. Camden, London. Via Monte Napoleone, Italy. #82Eo Street 240 ½, Phnom Penh? We may just have found the start of Phnom Penh’s street of best shopping. Hidden away in this little alley of wonders is Paperdolls, a mashup of all things fun and whimsical in Phnom Penh’s trend driven world. This clothing and accessories hideaway holds everything from kitschy jewelry and gorgeous pop surrealism prints to filmy pastel dresses and studded clutches. Opened recently in May 2012, branching off Dollhouse Salon, Paperdolls has quickly cultivated its own following. According to Brandon, one of the partners in this treasure trove, the established Dollhouse Salon clientele were “moaning about (the salon) not having a proper store” and “ending up at parties wearing the same dresses” as other expats. Brandon and Ryan collaborate in the buying process, which is a perfect match according to Brandon; Ryan tends to gravitate towards the edgier and trendier and Brandon’s aesthetic appeal is toward the more practical and conservative. This blending attracts a wide base yet still keeps things interesting. Paperdolls’ goal is to source things throughout the world, from India to Colombia and Korea so that each item is one of a kind in the area. Along with keeping Phnom Penh stylish, Paperdolls’ focus is to support new designers by reserving sections of the shop for them to display their product on a commission basis. Allowing this space gets their product on a shelf in an attractive boutique, subjects them to market research, and lets customers experience the product without the designers having to expend their resources on their own shopfronts. Paperdolls makes attractive adorning accessible to everyone, so keeping price points reasonable and keeping products fresh and new is of great importance. Make sure to keep an eye out for this partnership and I can assure you, walking out of Paperdolls empty handed is simply impossible. tel: 016 620 908

Dance Workshop Cambodia and

Universal Talent Asia Get Into The Groove Of Phnom Penh Making dance accessible to all backgrounds and ages, Laura Joy Kiddle runs the only dance school in the Kingdom to offer full education in classical ballet, modern and tap dance. Her fully equipped Riverside dance studio allows budding talents to whirl and flit across the sprung floors of mirrored rooms, a space of inspiration and expression. Once a performing arts student at The National Theatre in Victoria, Laura performed in countless musicals and pantomimes with leading roles and soaring success. After falling in love with Cambodia, she choreographed and managed the first full-scale production of Grease combining a Khmer and expat cast and opened Dance Workshop Cambodia in 2007. Today, over 50 students dance in Laura’s footsteps and have the chance to partake in a variety of facets. By keeping the classes affordable, teaching at shelters for local girls and taking on a ‘sponsored’ dancer that shows great potential every term, Laura has helped to make dance a truly universal language. “I have seen up’s and downs, for sure. An amazing studio was torn down to developers, loved students have left

for overseas and things happen that are out of your control, no matter how hard one tries. But I keep on with what I love and better myself, year after year”. The thrill on a student’s face as they learn their first jete, or a student moving from strength to strength in their dance career, all drive Laura’s passion, as she remembers some success stories: Finding amazing talent in a young Khmer girl who now continues to study ballet in South Africa. Another of her students who passed the auditions at ‘Le Petit rat de l’opera’ in France, and another girl who is currently completing her dance education at the University of Arts in Philadelphia. Never ceasing to pause or seek new flair, Laura also manages Universal Talent Asia, a boutique agency connecting international and local dancers to events in Cambodia. Dance classes will continue through mid December and re-start January 2013 Get in touch at info@universaltalentasia.com Like the fan page: facebook.com/UniversalTalentAsia or facebook.com/groups/DWCLaura/ universaltalentasia.com _ 35

Beyond Interiors .BEYOND Interiors’ presence has been of great value since their beginning in 2008. With initial vision and eventual success of sourcing and producing quality furniture in Cambodia with a skilled design team, their own production facility, the ability to constantly adapt to the demands of the design industry, and offering skills as both an interior design firm and manufacturing company we will continue to see their work throughout Phnom Penh. .BEYOND recently relaunched their website to provide more user-friendly access and unveiled a detailed catalog representing and showcasing their entire range of product. The fully customizable line includes pieces ranging from modern dining tables to luxuriant sofas. As part of .BEYOND’s rebranding, the three key aspects of the company have split into separate parts as the Showroom, the Production Team in Kien Svay, and the Design Team; allowing each area of the company to hone in on their strengths and guarantees the client quality of their project, attention to detail, and excellent fabrication of the product. Although their focus had previously been on individual proposals, they have

recently been offering their services to large scale projects such as the Total offices in the Hong Kong Center. The team hopes to engage in extended production of furniture using recycled materials such as rice husk tiles, recycled glass table tops, and source managed recycled timber furniture; all designed to be both aesthetically attractive, environmentally friendly, and entirely Cambodian. During their branding relaunch event in October, it was easy to witness the tight knit family they have created between the employees, clients and colleagues. Bronwyn Blue, founder and director of .BEYOND, hopes to expand within Cambodia and eventually branch to neighboring countries, always continuing to grow the .BEYOND family and network.

ur environment

Writer Jess Abrahams

Water and Waste Alternatives to Disposal Water Bottles When I first arrived in Phnom Penh the bin in my hotel room was soon overflowing with empty plastic water bottles, as I presumed the tap must not be safe to drink. I knew buying bottled water was bad for the environment - the plastic in the bottles comes from fossil fuels and discarded bottles cause pollution and contribute to landfill – but it is convenient. However the safety of Cambodian filtered water is guaranteed. A 2008 study found that only 24 of the 130 bottled water companies actually complied with the minimum quality standards.

Keep in mind though, the tap water sitting in ‘old metal pipes’ in your house might have collected traces of heavy metals – a problem common in both developed and developing countries. Unfortunately ceramic water filters won’t remove these metals, however running the tap for a minute or two to ‘flush’ water that has been sitting in old pipes, should.

A better option is to buy drinking water in bulk from a reputable brand (HITECH is good) and refill a quality reusable water bottle. The 20 liter blue water barrels available in many roadside shops and at your local Psaar cost $5 each and are much better value than buying bottled water. They are also refilled and reused rather than just recycled.

So if you want to help look after the Cambodian environment, don’t buy water in disposal bottles. Instead buy a good reusable bottle and fill it from a refillable 20 liter blue barrel or ‘flushed’ tap. And if you can’t avoid buying a single-use bottle, you can leave it out on the street for the “Etjai” or waste-pickers who go through this city’s rubbish at night, collecting and separating cans, cardboard and plastics, which they then sell for a small profit to recycling companies. You can make life easier for the Etjai by setting your recyclables apart when you put out your garbage.

Another option is to simply drink the tap water. Ek Sonn Chan, the legendary head of the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority, personally guarantees that the city’s tap water is safe to drink. While Phnom Penh tap water doesn’t smell or taste quite as ‘neutral’ as bottled water, it won’t make you sick.

You can buy a quality reusable water bottle from a city bike shop like Flyingbikes 2 (Golden Sorya Mall, St. 154 corner St. 51) or Vicious Cycles (No.23 Eo St. 144) or from the Camper outdoor store (No. 823-825, Confederation de la Russie / St. 110)

Ur Christmas in Phnom Penh The heat overwhelms as you sit on you moto waiting for traffic to inch its way forward. It’s 30deg outside and you’re sweating bullets, but wait, isn’t Christmas right around the corner? Well, that’s the sad reality of living in a hot country, your mind forgets the feelings of a chill breeze blowing through your pea coat, snuggling in a blanket with a steaming cup of hot chocolate, the bite of the snow through your gloves, and the tingling smells of cinnamon, vanilla, and spice warming you from the inside out. Here are 7 easy ways to ring in the holiday cheer in Phnom Penh :

1. Make your own Christmas Tree or wall tree with fabric 2. Music: Caroling or caroling concert 3. Buy an air freshener that smells like Christmas 4. Watch Elf, Charlie Brown’s Christmas, or any Holiday movie 5. Bake a pumpkin pie ! 6. DIY gifts for your friends here in Phnom Penh

Dolla and Peanut have collaborated to make PND, a dynamic duo with a unique sound. Fusing old Cambodian Rock with Western 70’s break beats, Dolla is the man behind the mic, who MC’s in both Khmer and English, and Peanut is in charge of music production. Both grew up in America, Dolla on the East Coast in Amherst, Massachusetts, and Peanut on the West Coast in Seattle, Washington. Although raised in America, they are both Khmer, and have strong pride in their roots. Their parents fled the war to America as refugees, having little choice but to raise their children in the ghettos.

It was there, however, that they came across hip hop. The PND Take Over Mixtape represents the experiences that Dolla and Peanut endured, as well as the inspirations they aspired to, while growing up in the hip hop culture of America. It has hip hop influences from the 90’s to 2012, while still maintaining a strong connection to their Khmer heritage. Download Free Album @ bboypeanut.com

ur typical day

Writer Our Dear Lady Expatriate

Your 3 Days Before Payday Day

Hop out of bed with a gleeful spring before you remember you’re broke as a joke. Panic-stricken, grab the last issue of WUPP and tear through the pages until you arrive at the coupon section: gone, all gone. Refuse to be defeated. Dust off your trusty pink pedal bike and take a deep breath before you point it into traffic towards the Russian Market. Upon your sweat-soaked, adrenaline-rushed arrival, score a bag from the lady and start grabbing fruit and veg. Bought by the mixed-up kilo here, it’s a heck of a lot cheaper than the pre-cut packs at Lucky, though you’ll have to chop it yourself, you lazy brat. Oh well, you may be skint but at least you won’t catch scurvy. Remembering how nice the pool felt when your buddies tossed you in at the last WUPP party, set off towards The Eighty8 and spend the rest of the day nursing your cocktail and lounging like the rich and famous (if they indeed had a one drink budget). When the last of your pitiful ice has melted in your glass, head out in search of sustenance. You’ve not yet tried the street-side stalls, and tonight looks to be the night. Squat down on the little red stools, gaze up at the sky and count your lucky stars that you live in Phnom Penh – the land of the monthly paychecks and daily temptations.
