Tuk Tuk of the Month Mr. Smiley I remember it was May 2010 and I had just finished the last sip of my ‘Tom Cruise’ cocktail at the old Elsewhere bar. When I looked out the doorway that lead to the bustling street 278, I felt stressed at the thought of having to hustle for a tuk tuk, choose the ‘right’ one and get the ‘right’ price. The barman offered to help and asked me what I wanted, as if from a menu. He then walked out in to the street, chatted with some drivers and when I next looked up, they had all moved away and all that was left was one man. Sporting a groovy hat and a t-shirt covering his slightly rounded belly, was a man with a big friendly smile. Instantly I named him Mr. Smiley and it was about a year before he told me his name – Mr. Song. The man knows every street, bar, restaurant and even new gallery in Phnom Penh. He can take you somewhere once and never forget how to get back there. Most importantly though, is that he is sober and safe. He keeps an eye out for trouble and will point out any groups of men that he thinks may look ‘dodgy’, and more recently needs to look out for fast cars flying past. He will not just stop at your house, take the money (haggle for more) and leave, he will turn off his engine and wait until the gate is locked and you are standing on the inside. Mr. Song is 38 years old and married with two children. He finished grade 12 at school but did not go on to further study as he needed to work. He has worked

for a club in Phnom Penh and for a restaurant but says the income was small. His parents told him he could earn more money as a tuk tuk driver and that it was a good job, so he saved until he could afford to buy one. He has been driving nights for the past five years after having spent three years as a day driver, but times are getting tough with more and more drivers. Whilst he is technically a night driver, he will work whenever he is called. You can always find ‘Mr. Song-Smiley’ on street 278 near Equinox waiting of course, with a big smile. Mr. Song enjoys being a driver. When asked why, he explains that it means he can afford to look after his family, including his mother who lives outside Phnom Penh.

Cambodian Living Arts

Art at heart The series of three successful rotating shows, Plae Pakaa, at the National Museum is a rare chance to discover a wide range of traditional performing arts (classical and folk dancing, opera, and theater), the diversity of Cambodian culture, and the wealth of its talent. It is also an opportunity to get to know the work of Cambodian Living Arts. The non-profit organization founded by the renowned human rights leader Arn Chorn-Pond, has been dedicated to promoting and developing the Cambodian art scene and creating a favourable environment for artists since the early 1990s. Today, the organization is a program of the Marion Institute, a US-based non-profit. CLA works in different areas of the art world with three main missions: arts education, promotion of the arts, and advocacy. With these missions, they are building a community by strengthening art. As well as its work on the social and cultural role of art, Cambodian Living Arts also demonstrates how art can be an economic asset. CLA dedicates much of their resources to education, to pass the gift of living arts on to the next generation

by conducting workshops and offering scholarships to young Cambodian talents. They also support established artists, providing access to facilities such as rehearsal space and recording studios. Artists in the program put on shows, tours and festivals, as part of its goal to bring art to the people. The purpose is to create a dynamic interplay between artists and the public, that will highlight the relevance of art in every-day life, encouraging investment in the arts, opening schools and bringing about an awareness of the importance of the arts in Cambodia. CLA also pushes forward dialogue on the protection of intellectual property, building partnerships, sharing expertise and ensuring that artists have the resources they need. Ultimately, the goal is to create an ecosystem where creativity and artistic expression become political and economic strengths in Cambodia’s future. UR COVER /

SOMA NORODOM The Rebel Princess Writer : Romi Grossberg Photo : Nick Sells /KPR Walking into the Riverhouse I was met by the vivacious, ever-smiling ball of energy that is none other than Princess Soma Norodom. The last time we sat down for an interview was in 2011 where she was the one asking the questions of me on Cambodia’s first university, English speaking PUC Radio Talk Show that she founded, which in true ‘Soma style’ became # 1. Since then, Soma has turned from radio to print and currently writes the weekly column ‘Royal Rebel, The Social Agenda with Princess Soma Norodom’ for the Phnom Penh Post, which of course is now the # 1 most read section. She is also a consultant for S&A Enterprises and the host of Thursday’s ‘Women’s Night’ at the Riverhouse Bistro.

_ 12

“Education is the only way out of poverty” -Soma Norodom Soma’s talents are numerous and her reputation as the ‘royal rebel’ seems to make her giggle and give her a greater platform to get involved and advocate on behalf of those who can’t. She is no stranger to volunteer and charity work, both in the U.S. and here in Cambodia. This, she says she gets from her late father and greatest mentor, Prince Norodom Vatvani, whom I was fortunate to have met last year. Her eyes light up like a child as she talks about him and how he always believed in her. “He was all about volunteer work” and instilled in her that “if you are one of the fortunate ones, you must help others”, something that Soma carries on today. In order to keep his legacy alive, Soma is setting up the ‘Norodom Vatvani (scholarship) Foundation’ this year to help young people go to university and hopes to encourage the future leaders of Cambodia. “Education is the only way out of poverty”, Soma says. She was fortunate that after her family fled the Khmer

Rouge in 1975, she had the opportunity to go to both school and university. She remembers her mother pushing her to study hard and instilling in her that respect and success come from doing well in school. This year Soma was rewarded for her charity work also with the ‘Peace Through Service Woman’s Leadership Award’ of which she is very proud. Times have been tough though in recent months for Soma. In October the King’s father died, shortly after she was publicly criticised for a controversial column in the Post, and then in December her own father died. All of this in such a short period of time took its toll, and Soma needed to find inner strength to continue on. With U.S. citizenship, she can always leave but she has chosen to stay. Cambodia is her home and she has many more plans, starting with hosting the TechCamp Phnom Penh conference organised by US Embassy and Open Institute Cambodia on March 13-14th.

Syna’ Styling photo by : Montana Rakz

When flipping through a glossy magazine and see an exceptionally stunning model or sitting front row at a high end fashion show, it is highly likely that Leang Syna, the artist behind Syna’Styling, had her hand in prepping the pretty faces. As the leading makeup artist in the beauty and fashion industry, Syna has managed to build her portfolio to great extents in Phnom Penh and has worked with top models for exceptional projects and campaigns. She has also worked on several movie sets, contributing to war makeup, prosthetics, and special effects like those in the film Saigon, Summer of Our 20’s. She began her training as a hair stylist and makeup artist at Marine’r Paris in 2002 and continued her education at Sapors Modeling Agency through 2004. Syna now finds herself no longer the student,

but teacher. She holds private instruction sessions for individuals interested in learning proper makeup techniques for their personal look along with students hoping to work as future cosmetologists themselves. Syna hopes in the next year to open her own studio to hold these classes on a regular basis and also have a welcoming space for clients to receive their beauty treatments. Syna’s ability to understand facial structures, skin tones from all nationalities, and how to highlight each person’s best features sets her apart from other makeup artists in the country. Stylists and photographers have learned to give her free reign when it comes to a shoot, her instincts prove to be spot on and each look differs from the last. Her abilities also have great range.

On one page of her portfolio you may see a blushing bride, glowing softly in a subtle champagne palette with slightly glossed baby pink lips, and with a flip of the page be faced with an incredible haute couture styled face, complete with high gloss lips, gilded eyes and thick, fluffy eyelashes then on to a perfectly powdered retro, heavily eye lined model playfully posing for the camera.

Be warned, you may want to book ahead of time to ensure her services. Brides are currently booking up to ten months ahead! Trust us when we tell you, Syna will help you put your best face forward.

GOLDEN BANANA Boutique Hotel & Resort

“Luxury oasis in Siem Reap”

If you wish to treat yourself to something more special than the run-of-the-mill guesthouse during your stay in Siem Reap, look no further than the Golden Banana Boutique Hotel & Resort. The classy Boutique Hotel was opened in 2006, followed in 2009 by the Resort just down the road. The two establishments provide different yet equally delightful experiences, whether you’re taking the whole family on a relaxing get-away, or looking for a lively social experience. The owner has created a unique atmosphere of luxurious yet intimate hotels that feel like a home away from home. The swimming pools, complete with waterfalls, the sun decks, the restaurant and pool bar: everything is geared at providing you with the elusive lost paradise experience that those of us

living in chaotic Phnom Penh yearn for. Nothing like reading a book by the pool, enjoying the sun of Siem Reap, cocktail at hand. There is an open, gay-friendly and welcoming atmosphere to all guests, whether young couples, families or singles. Being located on two separate properties provides guests with a choice: families will enjoy the quiet and restful Boutique Hotel, while social butterflies can spread their wings at the Resort. The rooms at the Resort are a treasure: spacious, with private terraces and rooftops, outdoor bathtubs, and sun decks. Everything has been designed to ensure a memorable stay at the Golden Banana. And even if you’re not a guest at the hotel, you’re most welcome to come and enjoy a day at the pool, or a meal at the delightful, cosy restaurant.

Owner and seasoned traveller, Dirk, has blended influences from around the world into the hotels’ decor. A tasteful mix of Balinese objects, with subtle echoes of European style, colorful tiles from around Asia, and other tasteful touches create a charming atmosphere of yesteryear, with many guests mistakenly believing that these new buildings are gems of the colonial era. The friendly owner and staff also provide a range of services to help you make the best of your time in Siem Reap. There will be no need to haggle over the price of a tuk-tuk to visit Angkor Wat, as the Golden Banana has its own team of tuk-tuk and taxi drivers

at your service. They will also happily assist you with travel arrangements or other activities in the Siem Reap area, including adventure trips on motorbikes, quads (four-wheeled motorbikes), hiking and, coming soon, kayaking on the lake. Want to learn how to create the unique flavors of Khmer cuisine? Ask about the cooking class! Whatever you’re looking for, the Golden Banana team will tailor a package of activities to your taste. The Golden Banana team values the relationships with their customers, and they’re offering discounts to returning guests, as they strive to ensure that you always feel at home in their beautiful gem of a hotel.

The first WINE GARAGE sale

BY WUPP MAG & AK WINES Photo by Nick Sells / KPR Last month, AK Wines hosted Cambodia’s first ever Wine Garage Sale partnering with WUPP Mag at The Living Room. Walking up the stairs guests were greeted with cases and cases of wine. More wine than they’ve likely seen before, all gathered in one place. The affair started at 10:00 in the morning; a steady stream of people came throughout the day until it closed at 6:00. The different stands of wine set up across the rooms gave everyone who came a real opportunity to try and learn about wines from around the world. Stands for most of the major wine producing countries were arranged across two rooms and a balcony in the intimate setting of the Living Room. Some fifty odd wines were available to taste, twice as many to buy. The clearance table offered even more specials, while they lasted. No one left empty handed, most walked away with a case or two… or three. In addition to all the wine, a real French Winemaker, Claude Fournier of Domaine Fournier Père et Fils, was at the event to talk about his wines. He also came to promote Sancerre, a lesser-known French Wine Region.

INTERVIEW:

What brings you to Cambodia? I love travelling and I love Cambodia. I come here quite regularly. Sancerre, where I’m from, is a small region. People haven’t heard about it, but we make some really special wines. I’m here to share those wines with the world. What do you think of the wine fair? It’s been great. It’s given me a real chance to show and talk about my wine. I think people have been pleasantly surprised. It’s always good to show them something new. And, I admit, there are a few wines I would buy myself, if I could get them back to France. Can you tell me a little about Sancerre? It’s a wonderful slice of land along the Loire River. We grow mostly white wine from Sauvignon Blanc, and a little bit of red from Pinot Noir. Our wines have a lot of character. INFO : www.fournier-pere-fils.fr _ 20

STREET FOOD Food is a huge part of life in Phnom Penh, and a big part of the food scene is street food. It looks delicious, it’s cheap but where to go to make sure you have a fantastic experience? The Wupp team put together a list of their favorite places to share with you. Your search for cheap, delicious meals around the city is now over.

Mi cha: Fried noodles On St 386 near corner of St 143, a kind middle-aged woman brings out her cooking cart twice a day and makes some of the best fried noodles (with beef, eggs or both) for only 2000 - 2500 Riels a plate. In the evening, on the corner of St 107 and 109, near Orussey market, a mother and her two daughters cook up delicious fried noodles and Khmer sandwiches, a must try!

Ban Bao Along Monivong, near the corner with St 360, several stalls. Steamed buns stuffed with pork meat, onions, and eggs. Also available with only vegetables or beans. Perfect for a snack, light lunch or a post-party meal.

Num Pang A delicious sandwich full of fresh vegetables and Vietnamese pâté. Nothing is easier to find in the city.

_ 34

Orussey Market On St 182, day and night. Even better at night. Awesome fried noodles with beef. The perfect spot to try your first “pregnant eggs (not for the faint of heart).

Russian market Indoor stalls: A famous place to eat street food. Good quality. Our favorites: barbecued skewers (pork, beef and chicken) with bread and finely grated fresh vegetables. A different kind of fried noodle, lot cha, which are smaller and thicker noodles. Some really good bo bun (a delicious mix of rice noodles, spring rolls and fresh peanuts). And for those with a sweet tooth, there are waffles, cakes and delicious fruits.

CP Chicken You can find their signature red stalls all around Phnom Penh. Their fried chicken is the real deal. For just 3000 Riels a piece, you can enjoy their delicious and high quality food.

The organic basket delivery sustainable agriculture at your door

The produce delivery service is a new initiative started by Khmer Farmer Garden (KFG). The NGO, which promotes organic and sustainable agriculture in Cambodia, is starting a weekly home delivery of organic fruit and vegetable baskets (known to some as the community supported agriculture (CSA) model). The idea is simple: you sign up and every Tuesday or Thursday you get either a 3 kg basket (8$), or a smaller one (5$), full of fresh vegetables, fruits and other products (tasty salads, eggplants, tomatoes, rice, L’Irresistible jam ...) with the possibility to choose exactly what you want and create your perfect basket. Same Same but better

A few weeks ago, we told you about U-Care Pharma, the best spot for your health related needs. But U-Care has now more to offer than pharmacies: it is also a minimart, conveniently called U-Care Mart. Minimarts are flourishing all over Phnom Penh, and it is not hard to find one wherever you are, whenever you need it. But while most of these often don’t provide an attentive service and a wide range of products, U-Care Mart shares the same core objectives as U-Care Pharma: always provide you with top quality service and products. And with its “So Fresh!” section full of fruit and vegetables, U-Care Mart is certainly the only minimart in Phnom Penh where you can get a fresh fruit juice squeezed in front of you. That’s why U-Care started their own line of minimarts dispensing high quality, enjoyable items, exclusive and premium products that are hard to find elsewhere. Proper storage of the products, quality service, fresh fruit and vegetable, a clean and spacious store, and of course a prime location: these are the ingredients of the perfect recipe, and that’s what makes U-Care Mart different. A second U-care Mart is about to open in Siem Reap.

FOODIEBUS CAMBODIA TOUR EPISODE 1 + RECIPE

In Mohaliep, Kompong Cham Province

The Foodiebus Cambodia Tour 2013 started last January in the quiet village of Mohaliep in Kompong Cham Province. The team behind the intimate gastronomic restaurant on Street 310, hit the dusty roads of Cambodia for a 5 hour trip to discover the specialties of the Kingdom. On their journey, they met up with Om Laye, who was Chef Bo’s nanny when he was a kid. Om Laye, a krama maker and seller, is also an amazing cook and lives alone in a house with no electricity but many ghosts. She took the foodiebus team to a huge open market where all the villagers come with their products and sat down by the road to sell them. It’s not easy to find meat in the area and the fish is clearly the top

source of protein. Due to her religion, Om Laye cannot kill animals herself and so the team had to find a vendor with “pre-killed” fish - not the easiest task in a country with little refrigeration, and where fish is kept fresh by being kept alive. Finally, with fish at hand, the team was ready for their lesson. Om Laye taught them two popular, cheap and tasty recipes, a soup and a salad. Chef Bo was amazed by Om Laye’s techniques and her ability to create aromas, pound and mix herbs to add subtle flavors to her dishes. Next step on the Foodiebus Cambodia Tour: Mondulkiri and the unique cooking style of the region’s minorities, who serve up delicious dishes cooked inside sections of bamboo!

KhELTICA Celtic souls

For those who had the chance to see Kheltica live, they already know how their Celtic and festive music rocks the place. This huge band of ten musicians shares with Wupp its passion for music and explains what Kheltica is about . Welcome in the great Celtic lands filled with ghosts and magic.

_ 40

How did everything start? I already started a Celtic band in 2008, we rehearsed for a year and only gave one concert. Then people left and I started a new project which played for the first time live for Saint Patrick’s day. After this show, the managers of the Chinese House asked us to play at their place for International music day in 2009. We were supposed to be six, ended up being 3. We had a one hour set planed. We actually stayed three hours on stage playing again and again. The atmosphere was amazing! And Kheltica was born

Ten musicians is a lot, how do you work all together? We work on each song in a way that everyone find their place. We listen to each other a lot, correct each other. Everybody give ideas for arrangements that we try, and adopt if everybody agrees. We have different levels in the band from amateur to professional. Some of us had never played Celtic music before entering the band and learned as they were playing with Kheltica. That is what makes the band so rich.

What is the spirit of your music? It is a Celtic music: it comes from Ireland, Brittany, and Scotland. It can express joy as well as sadness : drinking songs, ballads, protest songs. It is mostly the kind of music that makes you want to dance and has real diversity. In Kheltica, we cover songs that we rearrange with our own style : we add a little a bit of rock, but also play traditional songs. The main idea is to enjoy ourselves and make people discover this music. The songs filling our repertoire are waltz, polkas, scottish, gigues. And our biggest joy is to see people dance on our music. On this matter, Phnom Penh’s audience is really fun and receptive.

NEW ALBUM IS OUT! Dub Addiction meets Kampuchea Rockers Uptown

‘Dub Addiction meets Kampuchea Rockers Uptown’, the new Dub Addiction’s album is out! Jan aka Prof Kinski tells us more about what’s behind this exciting project. How did the recording go? For this second album, we wanted to create a more organic, authentic dub sound in our music, so we booked a recording day at Cambodian Living Arts Studio and captured the live drum and bass tracks. Armed with those multi tracks we gathered in my Kinski’s Mad Lab Studio and did all of the additional recordings like guitar, keys, vocals, etc... After all the recordings were done, it was on me to create the dub typical remix sounds with delay, reverb and other effects, and I created the arrangement of the final songs. It took about half a year from the first recordings to the final product. What kind of album did you want? There has never been a Cambodian Reggae, Dub or Dancehall album. Dub Addiction tried to change that. I’m not coming from the classic Reggae but I have always been a great fan of Raggamuffin, Dub or Jungle / Drum’n Bass. On this album you can hear all of those influences. The whole album sounds more epic, more massive,

more Dub than the first one. There are more songs on it (13).... It is a journey, starting with a sweet and lovely female vocal Dub, full of expectation, followed by the first massive Raggamuffin burner, then roots sounding reggae, Khmer slow and deep dub style, and a Punk – Ragga as a final song.

Any surprise for the fans? He have recruited local Hip Hop Icons Pou Khlaing and Nen Tum to participate in one of our best hits (soon to hear on Radio NRG) and they both did a great job. The last song on the album “The Stopper Revisited” is the same song as the first one on our first album..... but in a totally different style. What’s next? We have an offer to play at Hanoi’s Reggae Festival in May, after that we’re invited to play 2 shows at a Copenhagen Festival in August. We are currently recording our third album already. INFO: ‘Dub Addiction meets Kampuchea Rockers Uptown’, released on Metal Postcard records, Hong Kong Released at the end of March

TRUE BRANDS No fake allowed!

In a city full of knockoff brands and malls replete with replica footwear, handbags, and apparel it becomes difficult to discern which products are to be trusted as originals. Although it may be tempting to get a new pair of Nike Frees or Asics Tigers for $25, you know you’ll be getting what you pay for. Luckily for sportswear fans, there’s a new store in town that guarantees originals from brands such as Puma, Adidas, and Reebok among others. True Brands, managed by Retail Vision Asia, joins its sister stores, the Adidas outlets on Mao Tse Tong and Siem Reap, to offer shoppers bonafide offseason goods for at least 20% off the recommended retail price. Stepping into the new store, shoppers will be greeted by friendly staff and racks of attractive, quality sportswear and sports goods for men and women. The staff are informative, helpful, and knowledgeable about technical sportswear. The range of goods are excellent with dozens of styles of shoes for everyone, whether the serious football player or casual chic shopper who appreciates the importance of comfort.

One trip to True Brands simply won’t be enough as they continue to update their stock monthly directly from manufacturers, keeping up on current styles and providing fresh kicks for all the sneakerheads in town. True Brands also completely avoids all third party retailers to deter any fake goods from making their way into the store like the recent and unfortunate bootlegging scam that Gucci was involved in recently in Vietnam. Not only are the products guaranteed authentic, shoppers have the ability to find pieces unavailable anywhere else in Cambodia. Currently True Brands stocks a limited edition supply of the Vespa and Adidas collaboration line, a collection that you’re guaranteed not to find anywhere else in the fair city of Phnom Penh. True Brands continues to push for new names to enter the store, so buyers keep an eye out for Nike, New Balance, and Asics to line the shelves of True Brands.

The only True Brands open to this day, store owners Jack and John hope to expand the number of shopfronts and will continue to add sportswear stores to the Cambodian market like Purely Puma, which will join retailers on Sihanouk Boulevard. Another plus, guests have the option to receive updates on sales and campaigns via SMS. Simply go into True Brands and register into their database for VIP access to upcoming events and additional markdowns. Join the team and make your way to True Brands and expect to walk out with an extra boost in your step, thanks to some fresh trainers straight out of the box. Where to play football in PP? There are lots of spots to grab a quick game of football, featuring all levels of skill and talent. From five a side to eleven, even places to play under the lights. Don’t worry if you’ve never played before it is still a great way to be active or try something new. Wupp tells you where to find the best spots: Check out the 3G Mini Football Pitch, Cambodia’s first artificial field that can be played either 3 a side or 11. This pitch is good if you have a small team, I would say this field is for more experienced players as you get a lot of teams that play here as well, the good news is you can also play here at night. The mini fields can be rented out, but they’re pay per use. Address : Corner Sihanouk Bvd and Street 163 Opening Hours : 6am to 10 :30pm Olympic Stadium is another spot, not only just for football but other sports as well. If you’re just looking for an easy going friendly football match this is the place. The field and pitches are larger, and if they definitely aren’t up to standard, it is still a lot of fun. Grab a game with some of the people playing there, they are always welcoming and looking for some new competition, so don’t hesitate. Here is free to play and open all days of the week, its best to go after 4 because that’s when people start to get off and the stadium starts to fill up. And for the heat also… Address : Corner Sihanouk Boulevard and Street 163 Open every day RooY7 Sport Club field located in Toul Kork, has the same concept than the 3G pitches except for larger pitch sizes (five aside and seven aside) as well as mini golf field and table tennis areas. Address : No. 206, Street 598 Booking : 066 858 687 For first timers there’s always juggling alongside the riverside with the use of a small ball almost in the shape of a birdie, the sey. This is a great way to learn the basics of juggling and freestyle street skills. Even if you are not a footballer or are just looking for something to do, get up and get active! _ 46 _46

ur geek report

THE FIRST GOOGLE CAR TO BE LAUNCHED SOON Google has been working for years on its self-driving car that will be able to drive anyone from a place to another securely, thanks to cameras and other extremely precise sensors. These cars have travelled more than 300,000 miles during their tests, without a single scratch. The project’s product manager, Anthony Levandowski, said during the Society for Automotive Engineers conference, held in February, that the Google Self Driving Cars will certainly be available to

consumers in 3 to 5 years. Despite Google’s efforts to meet this scheduled date, external issues might delay the launch of this product. According to certain experts, the launch might take more time : 15 to 20 years from now. For the moment, only three states have allowed them : California, Nevada and Florida. Insurance companies policies might also delay the launch, as we don’t know who will be held responsible in case of an accident.

THE iWATCH: THE NEW iTOY? The rumours about an Apple iWatch have been running for quite a long time, but got stronger last month on the internet. Is it a sign that the project is getting serious? According to Bloomberg, “Apple has a team of about 100 product designers working on a wristwatch-like device that may perform some of the computing tasks now handled by the iPhone and iPad, two people familiar with the company’s plans said “ Siri would also be integrated and allow to send texts,

mails, ask for the weather and make appointments. Thanks to these SmartWatches, you don’t even have to take your phone out of your pocket to check if you have any notifications, texts or emails. All of these are now available with a quick look to your wrist. Sony launched its Smartwatch in 2012, but its impact has been very limited. Other watches have been on the market for a while, but none of them has been a big success yet. Just like smartphones before Apple arrived with its iPhone in 2007.
