Tuk Tuk of the Month Traditional Driver “Driving a tuktuk is a good way to make money”, explains Andy, or Em Chomroem, a 26-year-old Cambodian man originally from Takeo Province who became a tuktuk driver three years ago. However, Andy does not want to be a driver forever and realizes he won’t have a choice soon – “The Cambodian Government wants to stop the tuktuk activity to make people use more cars and taxis”, he explains. Andy true goal is to become a bank employee. Nevertheless, he had to stop studying when he finished High School in order to help his family. Indeed, Andy’s siblings reside in the countryside and surely don’t earn enough money to make a living. Andy´s day starts at 8 am and finishes around 7 pm, “unless a customer asks me to stay with him. Then I can be working until midnight. A good day for me is when I can make at least US $15. A bad day is when I don´t drive anyone. Sometimes it happens”. “I like my customers. I like to make them jokes and to laugh with them. I feel lucky because in general my clients are very friendly to me”, Andy said, despite his least favorite aspect of dealing with tourists in Cambodia – “I don´t like the fact that certain women wear very short clothes. It is not respectful. If I had a girlfriend, I wouldn´t like her to wear that kind of clothing.” When we asked Andy how he saw himself in the future and if he is married, he stated: “I don´t even have a girlfriend. And paying for a wedding ceremony is too
expensive. My life boils down to be a tuktuk driver. I don´t even have time to practice my favorite hobby. I love playing football but I am not that good at it”. He also loves classical music. When I asked him which composers were his favorites, he answered in that
typically Cambodian way of never losing face, “I cannot tell you, they are all dead!”

Canon Imaging Academy Express Your Artistic Side Situated in Canon’s showroom on Sihanouk Road, Canon Imaging Academy, better known as ‘CIA’ will have its official launch next month. The school holding photography classes for adults in both Khmer and English is part of Canon’s mission to promote photography in Cambodia. This week I spoke to CIA’s Liwen Tan to find out more about CIA and what they have to offer. Classes started on Sept 22nd-23rd with a 5 week, 40 hour basic photography course being held 2-6pm Saturdays and Sundays at a cost of $100. Professional photographer’s Miller and Moni will be running the courses in Khmer and English respectively. Both photographers are former winners of the annual Canon Photo Marathon Competition which will be open again in October this year. CIA’s basic photography courses offer theory as well as hands on experience. You will not only learn composition and how to use your camera, but then be able to go out into the streets and experiment before
coming back for discussion, review and feedback. It seems this is just the beginning for CIA and once launched in October, they plan to offer more workshops and field trips such as night photography, landscape and macro photography. Excursions and even weekends away are something to look out for in the future. They look forward to offering private photography workshops or courses tailor-made to the needs of groups or organisations also. Look out for the Canon Cambodia Photography Club (CCPC) that organises meetings quarterly to share ideas and photography tips. They also have professional guest speakers on different photography topics, and showcase on Canon’s latest products. You can also follow them on Facebook. Cesvi Flood Recovery Program Cambodia was stricken by heavy floods during September 2011, claiming the lives of hundreds of people, damaging infrastructure, and causing the loss of the dry-season harvest for thousands. Though many months have gone by, the road to recovery is still long. Through funding from ECHO, Cesvi is contributing to the recovery of CholKiri district, in Kampong Chhnang province. CholKiri was one of the most affected areas by floods, located right on the Tonle Sap River. Communities here are used to high levels of water: every year during the rainy season, people travel by boat between elevated houses and children attend floating schools. However, the level that the water reached during the 2011 floods forced people to flee their homes and look for a safe place in Pagodas. Sanitation facilities are scarce in these “safe” places, as is “safe” drinking water. This stagnant water caused a spread of water-borne diseases.
water, improving hygiene & sanitation practices and preparedness of safe places. The most vulnerable households are receiving unconditional cash transfers from Cesvi, to overcome the acute food shortage they are undergoing. These households have limited coping strategies, because local social safety nets have been disrupted as a result of the flood. For women like Sarim, a 26 years old woman who lost her husband and needs to take care of her five children, this represents a real help: “I will be able to buy food and medicines for my kids, pay back my debts, at least until the harvesting of next season”. Sarim, like other target households of the project, will receive cash transfers from Cesvi every month until the end of January, when the new harvest season will provide income to communities.
Cesvi has started a Recovery project whose objective is twofold: on the one hand, it aims at alleviating the food gap and restoring the livelihood of poor households through increased access to food, capital and skills. On the other hand, it strives to help the area become more resilient to floods by increasing access to safe

The Green Fairy For centuries, absinthe has fascinated the human kind. Amazing legends float around its name and you can be sure that the liquor has “helped” quite a lot of writers and others artists; some of these writers and artists went crazy, according to stories they tell. The history of this mysterious alcohol is filled with fiery debates and prohibition is still a reality for absinthe. But, you my friend, are lucky, because you live in Phnom Penh and one bar has proudly made a specialty of it. The owner answers to the name of Thibault, and this knight of the green fairy welcomes you every day from 6pm to… Well… Let’s say that the gates will close right after the last customer flies away. Always on his stool behind the counter (rarely stressed out), this “frenchy” will mentor you on the sweet science of drinking absinthe. And if you offer him a drink, he’ll probably enjoy a few sips with you. This bar, where the French community puts its flag, might not be the trendiest bar in Phnom Penh, but the decoration is simple and will make you feel at home after one or two drinks. A MacBook lays at the end of the bar waiting for you to choose the songs you like. As well, feel free to plug in your iPod to set the mood and invite
some cute lost French girl, or guy, for a dance. We all have our favorite bar in our hometowns, a bar where you greet everyone, where the owner is your best buddy. L’Absinthe can easily remind you of this bar. Once you taste it, it’ll be hard not to come back again… And again... And again... Sometimes four times a week and then nothing for a while, but just enough to miss it quickly. It is hard to put a label on the people you will meet and the evenings that you will spend there. You can converse with NGO volunteers or interns, pub regulars, suited up expats or even the wildest of backpackers. Or, you might head there on a Monday evening, intending to have just one drink after a bad day and instead, leave around 2 a.m., screaming “Let’s go to Pontooooon!!!”, and then again on a Saturday night, just to have a long chat about classical music with Thibault while petting his dog Raoul. Anyway! L’Absinthe is a must-know. Writing this made me want to hug the green fairy again… I dash off. Corner of St. 51 and St. 174 Tel: 097 285 3217

Reaksmey Yean You have probably seen him in Phnom Penh. It’s hard to miss this young Cambodian artist with his afro look. Artist, art publicist for Cambodian Living Arts, and manager. At 21, Reaksmey has a lot to say about the Cambodian art scene with a lot of ideas brewing in his head. You left you family at an early age? I had this urge for independence. I had disagreements with my family and I realize now that this is what made me want to leave. So at 12, I decided to support myself and worked in a farm. At the same time I was studying in Phare Ponleu in Battambang [an NGO art school] and specialized in performing arts and traditional music. What’s up with the Cambodian art scene? It needs to improve. We have a lot of creative young artists but I would say that there is a lack of maturity among them. Usually they think that they can’t survive by themselves and ask foreigners for help. The result is that most of them don’t have their own identity - they’re basically pirating. They should lead their own scene!
That’s why I created my collective, Trotchaek Pneik to think about the future. Tell us more about this collective I created it in 2010. It’s 13 artists between 21 and 25 years of age, from different disciplines. We are basically gathering to talk and share about what we want for the art community in the future. My goal is to make them independent and learn from each other. So it’s not only about art, it’s also about managing, administration, etc… It’s a marketing world, you definitely need the proper skills. What about you? I recently became gallery manager at the Equinox (ground floor). I give Cambodian artists the opportunity to show their work. But on one condition: they have to take care of the organization of their own exhibition. For my personal projects, I’m thinking of a new art performance, more controversial this time. reaksmeyyean.wordpress.com/

GTS Jazz Trio Hello Gabi can you present us GTS and its members? GTS stands for members Gabi Faja (piano), Toma Willen (drums) and Sebastian Adnot (double bass). We are a bunch of professional musicians with Classical and Jazz backgrounds. All for one and one for all!
Can you describe your composition process? We don’t compose, rather we improvise. There are so many tunes out there that we can be kept busy for decades. However we are beginning to sketch our tunes and we will feature them very soon in our gigs.
How did all start? We got together for a function at Kwest Bar in Phnom penh and we never looked back. At first we played for fun but then realized we had a feeling for each others’ musical taste and we began to take it seriously. We have developed a lot musically and we continue to search for fresh, innovative and original jazz playing.
Have you made any record and, if yes, how did the recording session go? GTS hasn’t recorded yet, we played some 200 gigs in one year and had no time. We have a session planned this year with originals. But Jazz is notoriously difficult to sell, especially for a contemporary Piano Trio. We are trying to find a way to make our 1st record accessible, hopefully we’ll find it!
What are your musical influences? All the greats of course, from Fats Waller, through to the Swing era and on to Miles Davis and beyond. We have strong post-bop tendencies deriving from Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea and Brad Mehldau. We use 20th century Classical Music (Stravinsky, Ravel, Bartok) to explore new sounds. RadioHead, father Sihanouk Norodom and Bach seem to go hand in hand too!
How is Jazz doing in Cambodia? On TV there’s tons of karaoke and well, it’s rather different from what we play. Khmers respond most favorably to old school Jazz, with a vocalist. They loved our Piano Trio version of Stravinsky and Sihanouk Norodom music, though. Until the local music scene reaches a reasonably professional level (for Khmer players), Jazz will always be hard to master and understand. But check Thailand and Malaysia, they have massive Jazz communities, so in time Cambodia will embrace it as an art of its own.

How is touring going? Well, we tour a lot around Phnom Penh! We perhaps overkilled it the last year, so we’re going to slow down and play mainly in two, very different scenes: Jazz/Funk/ Pop with awesome Euan Gray and Silvie Izzo as opposed to GTS playing a more pure and concert-branded Jazz for a minority of listeners. This should keep us busy nonetheless. We make all our money from gigging, so we have to play four, five times a week.
Rite of Spring. It was harsh, dissonant, a-symmetric and complex. The Khmer audience, including children, erupted into a frantic applause. We never expected that but there you go. In New York we would have been drenched in tomatoes. Zappa: Jazz isn’t dead, it just smells funny. gtsjazz.wordpress.com
Any fun anecdotes? We did a gig at Intercontinental in June where we played a completely improvised version of Stravinsky’s

DSN JDG & Jayyfresh - Make Some Noise (Original Mix) This one’s more down my alley. Such a cool bouncy track from these two young producers. Epic synths with an equally impressive rythmic bassline. Bosco Delrey - Wild One (Reset! Remix) These Italians DJs really know how to make everything funky. Their unique sound (which they dubbed Turbofunk) really stands out in this one. It’s nothing like you’ve heard before and it’s sure to make you move. Firebeatz & Schella - Dear New York There’s so much energy in this track, Firebeatz and Schella sample Beastie Boys and bing you a drop made of awesome grinding saws. Really well done track that’s been getting loads of support in the scene.
Jack Beats Feat. Example & Diplo - War Out of the latest Careless EP, this is definitely the standout track. Once again, they have managed to evolve their wobble basslines into something fresh and innovative. Something well needed in a scene where many follow trends. Chris Arnott - Side By Side (REA7ISM Remix) REA7ISM is a fairly unknown producer, but his music is so promising. A bit different from what I usually play, this mid-tempo glitch tune with haunting vocals is really what electronic music is all about: taking you to another world.
Chardy & Timmy Trumpet - Sassafras Really cool track from Aussie producer, Chardy and trumpeter, Timmy Trumpet. Love the bouncy and chilled feeling to this tune, great summer track. Omar Linx - Cowboy (Zeds Dead Remix) Loved the original to bits, but this remix is great too. Nice heavy drop that comes by surprise and yet keeps the beauty and power of the original. Simina Grigoriu - Exit City I usually don’t play much Tech but this is a great song and EP. Some of you might know her as Paul Kalkbrenner’s wife, Simina is breaking through the electronic scene as a fresh and innovative producer.

Social Media Plus A new advertising company has sprung on the scene in Phnom Penh. Social Media Plus founded by Cambodian investment Management CEO Anthony Galliano and F&B marketing specialist Jonathan Polakowski. Together, they are trying to change the landscape of how Cambodian internet users interact with their local brands through Facebook and other social media platforms. “There are now over 650,000 Facebook accounts in Cambodia. That is about a 35% increase over the last 6 months. Presently Facebook is growing by approximately 12,000 new accounts a week in Cambodia,” says Chairman Galliano. The company offers a full social media management service and a menu of products to choose from. For companies that have no social media presence or have not been effective in doing social media on their own, the company builds the brand’s social media presence from scrap. “We are able to emulate a company’s website on Facebook with tabs that include information like food menus, outlet locations, company products, events, and educational information. Our mandate includes
building the community and consistently engaging them with value content every day. It is a dynamic process and it is a constant challenge to keep the community engaged. Generally, our customers let us manage the whole process, but we must remain true to the brand identity and image,” says Polakowski. “Social media is not just a about Facebook”. LinkedIn is growing rapidly and we expect Twitter will eventually be embraced. YouTube is an excellent avenue to showcase the company through video. Globally the metrics are saying that people are spending more time online, and particularly on social media. Buying decisions are increasingly influenced online. Our mission is to build a scalable and consistently engaging social media presence through the major platforms and monetizes that social media presence for the brand,” says Galliano. Beeline Arena For All Your Entertainment Needs It began with a simple observation. Cambodia had no venue for large-scale sporting events. And so a group of friends decided to do something about it: build an arena. As simple as that. After a busy year of planning and construction, they officially opened the Beeline Arena, the telecom company having paid to associate its name for five years while the company Banzai is managing the whole place. The goal was to be able to hold a variety of events, shows, and tournaments at a level not previously possible in Cambodia. Located in a rapidly developing area across the Japanese bridge, the Arena can seat up to 2,000 visitors under its covered structure. Among sports, with events catering to fans of almost every type, you can watch indoor soccer, volleyball, traditional boxing and also the first Cambodian league of basketball. Eight teams are currently playing in the Cambodia Basketball Challenge every Saturday, until October 20th. This is the first time basketball is being promoted in Cambodia, providing local talent with opportunities and raising the game’s standard and profile.
The manager of the Arena, Charles Julliard is working with NGOs to promote their activity through sportive events. The Beeline Arena is already supporting them and developing many partnerships. Among them, the popular circus Phare Ponleu Selpak from Battambang had the great experience of presenting its talent on the 29th of September, for the first time at a venue of such a high standard. . For the end of the year, there are plans to host concerts with international artists. The goal is to have two events every month, including sport, culture, exhibitions, shows, adding some new flavors to your weekends in Phnom Penh. The Arena team devoted extra resources to a 3,200 sq ft Brazilian themed VIP lodge just above the court. The Copacabana will definitely be the spot to be for a Beyonce show (when she decides to stop by Cambodia) . With increasing demand, the Beeline Arena team is already planning on expanding its offerings and by 2014 you will be able to train in an Olympic swimming pool after enjoying a few rounds on their brand new golf course.

ur fashion show
Writer Liseth Sanchez
Raffles International College Fashion Students Get Busy I am happy to feature Raffles International College (RIC) Inspiration fashion show that took place last month at Plantation Hotel. RIC is where I currently work as a fashion lecturer so writing an unbiased review of the show could be tricky. Instead I will tell you about the process and formulation behind it. The development of a fashion show requires a great deal of involvement and flexibility. As students assimilate an incredible amount of theoretical and technical information , sometimes it is difficult to realize that a successful outcome is not guaranteed by textbook isolated concepts. The key is integrating what they learn and using these tools with flexibility towards a materialized vision of the designers they would like to become. For the show they were involved in everything from working on fashion collections to developing concepts for make up, music, styling and PR. Inspiration featured: “Color Box” a collective collection of 1st year students and “Aurum”, the graduating collection of Eriya Miura.
For “ Color Box”: Chhun Liesim, Seyhak Rangsey and Chay Rithraingsey researched on global trends and worked with a vibrant, light hearted mood very directional for SS/13. The concept was a 90’s revival using geometric silhouettes and graphic color stories. Key aspects were: patterned construction surface details through pleats, perforations, transparencies and inserts. For “Aurum” Eriya mixed Byzantine aesthetics and Victorian military displaying an opulent parade of historical references. She has developed a consistent design philosophy, market awareness, brand identity and a mature sense of sophistication. We were very impressed with the enthusiasm and energy the students put in for this project. My colleagues: Sandhya Srinivasan, Paul Swanson and Seng Thai worked very hard on the logistics and production for the event. lizethsanchez@raffles-international-college.edu.kh

To Give or Not To Give Debate If you are living in, or just visiting Cambodia, you will have come across one of the estimated 24,000 children living or working on the streets. Whether they are beggars, shoe shiners, or trying to sell you something from books to bracelets, sunglasses to newspapers. Some may not be bothered by this, but for others like myself this poses an unending dilemma and raises more questions than it does answers about poverty, desperation and the legitimacy, if there is one, behind street sellers and beggars. In early 2010, I met with ‘Child Safe Cambodia’ and learnt about their ‘Think before giving to begging children’ campaign. Hours of questions and heated debate certainly gave me food for thought and made me relentlessly curious about street kids. My conclusion at that time was a flat out ‘no’ to all children on the streets whether they be begging or selling. I quietly felt guilty to all the children I was about to say no to, and guilty to the Child Safe Network knowing that only that week I had bought a book off a 12 year old boy in the street. From now on I would give my time and attention but not my money.
and handouts, I do also believe that each child is different. All children cannot be put into one basket. Yes it is true that there are children being ‘pimped’ out and treated poorly, it is true that kids are begging or selling for money to buy drugs too. It is also true that some kids are going to school half the day and selling books for example the other half so their family has enough to eat. Maybe their mother or father have died, has a disability or just can’t get a job, this doesn’t make them all evil or uncaring. The bottom line is we don’t know! We don’t know all their backgrounds and we are certainly not worthy of judging them. So what is the answer? To give or not to give? To buy or not to buy? Well, there is no right answer, there is only your awareness and understanding. The only ‘ask’ I have is this: treat them the way you would want your child treated. The solution to not being harassed by street kids is not to be rude or ignore them. They are humans too, they are children, they are just trying to survive the best they know how, and they should be treated with respect. Whilst I do agree with Child Safe’s theories around handing out money only perpetuating the cycle of begging and working the streets, of dependency on foreigners
