Lady Blues soccer field
Building a future for Washburn Soccer Construction started in early May on the Lady Blues soccer field southeast of the Washburn Softball Complex with the removing of several trees and then levelling of the ground. On July 14, workers came in to lay down the sod that would soon become the Lady Blues’ soccer field. When complete, the field will have a built in watering system and fenced in area covering more than three acres. Future plans include a press box and seating for more than 300.
Freshman Amanda Geist, sophomore Jolene Silovsky, head coach Tim Collins and freshman Erica Schmidt help roll out the first lines of the Lady Blues Soccer field on July 14.

About washburn Washburn University was established in February 1865 as Lincoln College by a charter issued by the State of Kansas and the General Association of Congregational Ministers and Churches of Kansas. A two-story brick building on the northeast corner of 10th and Jackson Streets was soon erected and the first classes began in January 1866. In 1868, the school was renamed Washburn College, in recognition of a $25,000 donation by Ichabod Washburn, a church deacon and resident of Worcester, Mass. The university was granted a permanent location in 1865 when Topekan Col. John Ritchie donated a 160-acre site, which at the time was a considerable distance southwest of the city. Construction on the first building began in 1872, with occupancy taking place in 1874. For the next two decades, college President Peter McVicar conducted an aggressive development campaign. His efforts resulted in the establishment of numerous Victorian limestone structures which characterized the campus for the next 90 years. Expansion of the school was constant. The School of Law was organized in 1903, as was a School of Fine Arts and a medical school, which educated physicians until 1913. During the next three decades structures such as the Mulvane Art Museum, Benton Hall and Whiting Field House were added to the campus. In June 1966, a tornado struck Topeka and several historic buildings on campus were demolished. The Washburn community rallied and financial support from friends and alumni made possible the rebuilding of many school facilities during the coming years. Today, university facilities offer more than one million square feet of modern academic and support space. In 1941, the citizens of Topeka endorsed Washburn by voting to establish a munici-

About washburn pal university, supported in part by the city and governed by a local board of regents. In 1952, the Washburn Board of Regents officially changed the name of the school to Washburn University of Topeka. In 1999, the university's primary funding was moved from city property tax to county sales tax sources, with the school retaining status as a municipal subdivision of the state. In addition to local financial support, Washburn has received state funds since 1961, which have been coordinated by the Kansas Board of Regents since 1991. Washburn is governed by its own nine member Board of Regents. Washburn provides broadly-based liberal arts and professional education through more than 190 certificate, associate, baccalaureate, master's and juris doctor programs through the College of Arts and Sciences and the Schools of Law, Business, Nursing and Applied Studies. Ninety-seven percent of the faculty hold a doctorate or the highest degree available in their discipline.

The Ichabod Club is a booster club that works to promote Washburn University Athletics and provides financial support to its athletic programs. Membership in the Ichabod Club has played a major role in supporting the annual scholarship drive and making a difference in the lives of Washburn student-athletes for the past 20 years. Washburn Athletics depends upon the annual contributions to the Ichabod Club Scholarship Fund to continue offering scholarship aid to our student-athletes. The mission of the Ichabod Club is simply to provide the scholarship assistance to young men and women student-athletes (tuition, fees, books, room and board) unless the contribution is restricted to a specific sport or some other specific purpose. All gifts to the Ichabod Club are tax deductible to the full extent allowable by law. Opportunities for alumni, friends, parents and boosters to become involved with the Ichabod Club program are available through pregame parties, golf tournaments, the Ichabod Club newsletter, monthly luncheons, the kick-off party and other special events. For more information, call the Washburn Athletic Department at 785.231.1135.

washburn facilities WEIGHT ROOM After more than $150,000 in upgrades to the weight room, the Washburn athletic program now boasts one of the best facilities in the Midwest. Ichabod Power is based on using free weights and the feet in contact with the floor, using triple extension of the ankle, knee and hip. This type of training is used to develop athletes stability in the joints and trunk, and power in the lower body when in contact with the playing surface. Each multi-rack and Olympic platform allows the Washburn athlete to perform Olympic Lifts on a solid oak surface. The multi-racks are self-contained with all the weight on the rack. This allows the Washburn athlete to perform 90 to 95 percent of their work in one area. The racks and platforms have special features that allow the student-athlete to perform secondary exercises with special attachments. The installation of new equipment transformed Washburn’s weight room into a top notch facility.
TRAINING ROOM The Washburn Athletic Training Center is one of the most advanced in the Midwest. The four-year old facility is nearly triple the size than the one it replaced. Steve Ice, Washburn’s Head Athletic Trainer, has been with the Ichabods and Lady Blues athletic programs for more than 24 years. He has a student staff of more than 20. Joining Ice’s staff this season will be assistant John Burns, who will also teach in the Health and Physical Education Department. Dr. Iris Gonzalez, the campus physician, is the team’s resident doctor. Dr. Matthew Bohm of the Cotton O’Neil Clinic comes to campus every Wednesday to evaluate student-athletes and to educate athletic trainers. Orthopedic Clinic and Sports Medicine provides state-of-the-art orthopedic care. The clinic has a team of five surgeons, a physical assistant, registered nurses, a physical therapist and certified athletic trainers. Stormont-Vail’s Gerald Applelhans, Director of Physical Medicine, provides Michael Ramirez, ATC-R, for daily treatments, education and internship sites.

2003 outlook by Gene Cassell Washburn Sports Information Director Game time has finally arrived and first-year head coach Tim Collins couldn’t be happier. “This is what I have been waiting for,” Collins said. “When there was talk about beginning a program at Washburn, there was so much excitement two years ago from myself and the soccer community and now that it is here, the excitement has grown even more.” The Lady Blues will be a young squad with 19 freshman, something any first-year program would be faced with, but Collins is thrilled to have the talented base to build the program with. “We were very fortunate to land some of the players we did considering the late jump in recruiting we had,” Collins said. “We were able to sign some of the best players in the surrounding area of Topeka, the Kansas City metro area and western Kansas.”
The Plan Building a program from the beginning will take time but Collins is looking to improve from the very first practice all the way through the season. “I’m looking at this from a three period learning clock for the team,” Collins said. “First off we have the preseason up until the first game. In this period I want the team to learn how to play with one another and feel more comfortable playing with each other. “In the second period, I consider this the time from first game through the midpoint of the season. Here I want to team to improve on the style of play we have implemented. “And in the final period, I want to see improvement of everything that we have tried to accomplish this season. Just because we are a new program who has never played a minute of college soccer
together, we want to be competitive.”
The Roster With 19 freshmen, two sophomores and one junior on the team, the Lady Blues will have a fast learning curve to get acclimated to the college game. Only sophomores Virginia Barnes and Jolene Silovsky have played any college soccer. Barnes played one season at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts and Silovsky will sit out the 2003 season after transferring from Missouri-Rolla, due to MIAA inter-conference transfer rules. The lone junior on the squad is goalkeeper Stacey Becker. Becker is new to soccer on the college level after playing basketball at Kansas and Wichita State before joining the Lady Blues. Of the 19 freshmen on the inaugural roster, nine times they have received allstate honors and the incoming freshmen have also tallied 14 allconference and region awards. The MIAA Three-time defending MIAA Champion Truman State was tabbed first with three first place votes and 45 points. Central Missouri was second with 43 points and three first place votes as well. Southwest Baptist was picked third with two first place votes. Rounding out the coaches poll was Emporia State in fourth with 30 points, Missouri Southern and Northwest Missouri in a tie for fifth with 21 points. Missouri-Rolla was picked seventh with 15 points and the Lady Blues were picked eighth in the poll with nine points. “We want to be competitive with teams in the MIAA,” Collins said. “This is our goal from the start of the season until we are finished this year and we are going to work hard every day in practice and in games to attain that goal.”
