about the MIAA
noakes@themiaa.com
The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, a 11-member conference of NCAA Division II institutions in Missouri and Kansas, was first organized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Over the past 20 years, the league has undergone several changes, highlighted by increased participation in national championships. The MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA student-athletes have won 13 national team championships and more than 100 individual national titles. The MIAA currently conducts conference championships in eight men’s and eight women’s sports. Men’s championships include football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track and field, baseball, tennis, and golf. Women’s champions are determined in volleyball, soccer, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track and field, softball and tennis. MIAA Commissioner Jim Johnson succeeded Ralph McFillen on July 1, 2007. Johnson spent two seasons as athletic director at Texas A&M-Commerce before becoming the MIAA’s third full-time commissioner. Johnson spent nearly two years (2003-05) at what is now the University of Central Missouri as associate athletics director for development. While in Warrensburg, he also served as the institution’s government relations director. Like his predecessor, Johnson has experience in the NCAA national office. He was in membership services from 1997-02, working as membership coordinator and Division II governance liaison. Natasha Oakes, a former All-MIAA track performer at Emporia State University, was added as the third full-time staffer in July 2005 as assistant to the commissioner for compliance. Larry House started in the summer of 2007 assisting the MIAA in the marketing of the conference events. Kellen Coleman started in the summer of 2009 as the director of communications overseeing media relations for the conference.

About WU
Washburn University was established in February 1865 as Lincoln College by a charter issued by the State of Kansas and the General Association of Congregational Ministers and Churches of Kansas. A two-story brick building on the northeast corner of 10th and Jackson Streets was soon erected and the first classes began in January 1866. In 1868, the school was renamed Washburn College, in recognition of a $25,000 donation by Ichabod Washburn, a church deacon and resident of Worcester, Mass. The university was granted a permanent location in 1865 when Topekan Col. John Ritchie donated a 160-acre site, which at the time was a considerable distance southwest of the city. Construction on the first building began in 1872, with occupancy taking place in 1874. For the next two decades, college President Peter MacVicar conducted an aggressive development campaign. His efforts resulted in the establishment of numerous Victorian limestone structures which characterized the campus for the next 90 years. Expansion of the school was constant. The School of Law was organized in 1903, as was a School of Fine Arts and a medical school, which educated physicians until 1913. During the next three decades structures such as the Mulvane Art Museum, Benton Hall and Whiting Field House were added to the campus. In June 1966, a tornado struck Topeka and several historic buildings on campus were demolished. The Washburn community rallied and financial support from friends and alumni made possible the rebuilding of many school facilities during the coming years. Today, university facilities offer more than one million square feet of modern academic and support space. In 1941, the citizens of Topeka endorsed Washburn by voting to establish a municipal university, supported in part by the city and governed by a local board of regents. In 1952, the Washburn Board of Regents officially changed the name of the school to Washburn University of Topeka. In 1999, the university’s primary funding was moved from city property tax to county sales tax sources, with the school retaining status as a municipal subdivision of the state. In addition to local financial support, Washburn has received state funds since 1961, which have been coordinated by the Kansas Board of Regents since 1991. Washburn is governed by its own nine member Board of Regents.

Loren Ferré became Washburn’s director of athletics in February of 1996 after a six-year appointment at Black Hills State University in Spearfish, S.D. Ferré is a dynamic leader who has implemented many internal changes within the athletic department since arriving on campus. He has put increasing scholarships and departmental fund-raising at the top of his list. He has been at Washburn for 26 of the 32 MIAA titles won and 58 of the 68 NCAA appearances in school history. In 2005, Ferré was named the Central Region Athletic Director of the Year. At Washburn, Ferré has been instrumental in the establishment of a strong Ichabod Club support team and the raising of funds for athletic scholarships. While at BHSU, Ferré was also director of the Donald E. Young Sports Fitness Center, a 172,000 square foot, $10.2 million facility. During his Black Hills tenure, the athletics department nearly tripled its outside revenue, including large increases in ticket sales and scholarship funding. All 10 varsity teams won a conference title in his final three years. Before joining the staff at Black Hills State, Ferré spent 17 years at the University of North Texas. He was the director of the Coliseum (1987-90) and was the associate and assistant director since 1980. He held the post of event coordinator (1978-80). Ferré is a 1971 graduate of Texas Christian University, earning a bachelor of arts degree. He earned a master’s in journalism from North Texas in 1982. Ferré also served a three-year term as Chair of the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball South Central Regional Chairman. Ferré and his wife Sarah, have two daughters, Caitlin and Hope.

Since then that success has continued to sustain and grow as Washburn’s athletic teams have won 31 conference championships and one national champion in women’s basketball in 2005. Only one other MIAA team has more MIAA titles since WU became eligible for conference championships in 1990-91. The Ichabod and Lady Blues athletic teams won one MIAA championship during the 2008-09 school year as the Ichabod tennis team won its third title in the last four seasons. Washburn recorded three runner-up finishes during the season while sending eight of 10 teams to postseason play.

Washburn Facilities Weight ROOM
The newly completed Capitol Federal Savings Student Athlete Strength and Conditioning Center has nearly 12,000 square feet of space for Washburn athletes to work out. Ichabod Power is based on using free weights and the feet in contact with the floor, using triple extension of the ankle, knee and hip. This type of training is used to develop athletes stability in the joints and trunk, and power in the lower body when in contact with the playing surface. Each multi-rack and Olympic platform allows the Washburn athlete to perform Olympic Lifts on a solid oak surface. The multi-racks are self-contained with all the weight on the rack. This allows the Washburn athlete to perform 90 to 95 percent of their work in one area. The racks and platforms have special features that allow the student-athlete to perform secondary exercises with special attachments. The installation of new equipment transformed Washburn’s weight room into a top-notch facility.
BASKETBALL/VOLLEYBALL COURT
On the second level of the Whiting Fieldhouse addition is a court which can house two basketball or volleyball courts or a full size court for each sport for practice. The lighting mounts across the top of the building are also high enough a volleyball tournament could be played on the main court. A viewing area surrounds the practice facility above the court level with enough room for extra workout areas for athletic teams.
