Jeff Stromgren First Season at Washburn
Thirty-two-year high school coach and Washburn graduate Jeff Stromgren begins his first season as head coach of the Ichabods golf team in 2012-13. Stromgren, a head coach at Washburn Rural High School from 1993-2012, is a 1979 graduate of Washburn with a bachelor's degree in education. He played basketball and golf for the Ichabods from 1977-79 and was the basketball team MVP in 1978-79. He also earned all-Central States Intercollegiate Conference as a guard that year. Stromgren replaces Doug Hamilton, who coached 10 years at Washburn before resigning last summer. Hamilton led Washburn to its first five MIAA titles and to 10 NCAA tournaments. The Ichabods finished second in the league this year and 15th in the nation. Stromgren started his career in 1980 at Meade High School in Meade, Kan., as head boy's basketball coach and assistant football coach until 1982. He then coached from 1982 to 1989 at Winfield High School in Winfield, Kan., as head coach of the boy's and girl's golf teams and the boy's basketball team. He moved to Topeka in 1989 and started at Washburn Rural as head boy's basketball coach until 1994. In 1993 he took over the girl's golf program and in 1997 he
headed the boy's golf team and held those two positions since spring of 2012. Stromgren has three 6A state titles at Washburn Rural (1997, 2005, 2008) and 17 city titles with five in the last five years. His Junior Blues teams have finished in the top five in state 15 times and he has 25 league and 21 regional titles in his career. He was city coach of the year 19 times and state coach of the year in 2005. Stromgren has coached over 30 players who went on to play college golf including nine who played with NCAA Division I schools. Along with coaching, he has also taught at each of the three high schools he's worked at. He will continue to teach at Washburn Rural during the 2012-13 season. Stromgren was born in Emporia, Kan., but grew up in Abilene. He's a 1975 graduate of Abilene High School and he's been married 33 years to his wife, Stephanie. They have two grown daughters, Whitney and Adin. Whitney played college golf at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Adin played at Wichita State. Along with his degree from Washburn, he earned an associate's degree in 1977 at Cowley County Community College and a master's in education administration in 1988 from Southwestern College.

Washburn University was established in February 1865 as Lincoln College by a charter issued by the State of Kansas and the General Association of Congregational Ministers and Churches of Kansas. A two-story brick building on the northeast corner of 10th and Jackson Streets was soon erected and the first classes began in January 1866. In 1868, the school was renamed Washburn College, in recognition of a $25,000 donation by Ichabod Washburn, a church deacon and resident of Worcester, Mass. The university was granted a permanent location in 1865 when Topekan Col. John Ritchie donated a 160-acre site, which at the time was a considerable distance southwest of the city. Construction on the first building began in 1872, with occupancy taking place in 1874. For the next two decades, college President Peter MacVicar conducted an aggressive development campaign. His efforts resulted in the establishment of numerous Victorian limestone structures which characterized the campus for the next 90 years. Expansion of the school was constant. The School of Law was organized in 1903, as was a School of Fine Arts and a medical school, which educated physicians until 1913. During the next three decades structures such as the Mulvane Art Museum, Benton Hall and Whiting Field House were added to the campus. In June 1966, a tornado struck Topeka and several historic buildings on campus were demolished. The Washburn community rallied and financial support from friends and alumni made possible the rebuilding of many school facilities during the coming years. Today, university facilities offer more than one million square feet of modern academic and support space. In 1941, the citizens of Topeka endorsed Washburn by voting to establish a municipal university, supported in part by the city and governed by a local board of regents. In 1952, the Washburn Board of Regents officially changed the name of the school to Washburn University of Topeka. In 1999, the university’s primary funding was moved from city property tax to county sales tax sources, with the school retaining status as a municipal subdivision of the state. In addition to local financial support, Washburn has received state funds since 1961, which have been coordinated by the Kansas Board of Regents since 1991. Washburn is governed by its own nine member Board of Regents.
