THE MIAA
ABOUT THE MIAA
The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, a 14-member conference of NCAA Division II institutions in Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma, was first organized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Over the past 100 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA student-athletes have won 16 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, more than 160 individual national titles. The MIAA currently conducts championships in eight sports for men and nine for women. For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf. The women compete for titles in volleyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and tennis. The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II conference changed its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State University and Washburn University became the first schools outside the state of Missouri to gain membership in the MIAA. The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institutions. Of those original members, only the University of Central Missouri and Northwest Missouri State University still remain a part of the MIAA. The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Central, Truman, Northwest, Southeast Missouri State University and Missouri State. Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: the Missouri S&T in 1935, Lincoln University in 1970, and the University of MissouriSt. Louis in 1980. The 1980s brought the biggest changes in the conference. In 1981, Southwest Missouri State University opted to move to NCAA Division I and the MIAA appointed its first full-time commissioner, Ken Jones, in July. He would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Former Gulf South and Metro commissioner Ralph McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retirement in 2007. Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen in July of that year and served as commissioner until September of 2010. Dr. Bob Boerigter succeeded Johnson in September 2010. Southwest Baptist University brought membership back to eight schools in 1986, before the major expansion of the conference in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri Southern State University and Missouri Western State University, formerly members of the Central States Intercollegiate Conference, began competition in the 1989-90 season. Southeast Missouri State left the MIAA following the 1990-91 season to move on to NCAA Division I, and was replaced by Emporia State University in the 1991-92 season. An assistant to the commissioner for compliance and internal operations/SWA position was added in 2005 and Amber Feldman has held it since 2011. Larry House joined the staff in August 2007 as coordinator of external affairs, and is now the assistant commissioner for championships and business development. The membership of the MIAA dropped to 11 schools, with the departure of Missouri-St. Louis in 1996 and Missouri-Rolla in 2005, the forfeiture of membership by Lincoln in 1999, the addition of Fort Hays State University in 2006 and the University of Nebraska Omaha in 2008, the re-joining of Lincoln in 2010, and the departure of Nebraska Omaha in 2011. On July 29, 2010, the MIAA CEO Council voted to extend invitations to the University of Central Oklahoma and Northeastern State University to become members of the league, and on September 24, 2010, it voted to extend invitations to the University of Nebraska-Kearney and Lindenwood University to become conference institutions, beginning in 2012-13. Charter member Truman State left the conference following the 2012-13 school year dropping the current membership to 14 teams.

Loren Ferré Athletic Director Loren Ferré became Washburn’s director of athletics in February of 1996 after a six-year appointment at Black Hills State University in Spearfish, S.D. Ferré is a dynamic leader who has implemented many internal changes within the athletic department since arriving on campus. He has put increasing scholarships and departmental fund-raising at the top of his list. He has been at Washburn for 33 of the 39 MIAA titles won and 76 of the 86 NCAA appearances in school history. In 2005, Ferré was named the Central Region Athletic Director of the Year. At Washburn, Ferré has been instrumental in the establishment of a strong Ichabod Club support team and the raising of funds for athletic scholarships. While at BHSU, Ferré was also director of the Donald E. Young Sports Fitness Center, a 172,000 square foot, $10.2 million facility. During his Black Hills tenure, the athletics department nearly tripled its outside revenue, including large increases in ticket sales and scholarship funding. All 10 varsity teams won a conference title in his final three years. Before joining the staff at Black Hills State, Ferré spent 17 years at the University of North Texas. He was the director of the Coliseum (1987-90) and was the associate and assistant director since 1980. He held the post of event coordinator (1978-80). Ferré is a 1971 graduate of Texas Christian University, earning a bachelor of arts degree. He earned a master’s in journalism from North Texas in 1982. Ferré also served a three-year term as Chair of the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball South Central Regional Chairman. Ferré and his wife Sarah, have two daughters, Caitlin and Hope.
