2018 Outlook Sixth-year head coach Jeff Stromgren lost a team leader and All-MIAA performer in Carson Roberts, but a young, talented core will look to bring the Ichabods to new heights after finishing second in the MIAA last season. The Ichabods had a successful fall season, garnering four top-10 team finishes, three of those in the top five. At the Washburn Invitational on Oct. 16-17, the Ichabods finished third out of 18 teams, and had the individual winner in sophomore Blake Allen. Fellow Ichabod and sophomore Jared Burns ended the three rounds tied with Allen, and went to a three-hole playoff which culminated in Allen’s victory. Both earned MIAA Co-Athletes of the week in men’s golf following the performance. The Ichabods showed depth throughout the fall, as Allen, Burns, Colton Massey and Brock Falley each were top-scoring Ichabods in fall events. Allen, Burns and Massey each tabulated top 10 individual finishes for the fall, as well.

Kang and Parker are the two non-Kansas natives on the team. The Ichabods will open the spring out west in the Las Vegas Desert Classic, an event hosted by the University of Missouri-St. Louis that will take place March 5-6. They will then travel to the Dave Falconer Golf Classic in Russellville, Arkansas the following week. Their next event will be at the tail end of March, the 26-27, at the Northern Sun Preview in Smithville, Missouri, and the final event before the conference tournament will be the UCO Classic on April 16-17. The Ichabods will have a chance to make another impressive conference tournament run on April 23-25, and go for a fourth NCAA Super Regional appearance under Stromgren. The Super Regional will be May 8-10, and the National Championships will take place on May 22.

The lone senior on the team is Chase Coble, who completed his first season as an Ichabod in 2017 after transferring from Hutchinson Community College. He finished the fall as the third best individual on the team with a 74.91 stroke average. The junior class is the largest for the Ichabods with six of the 13 players. Falley, Colton Allen, Brooks Brown, Narito Mendez, Nathan Roy and Turner Wintz join Coble as the Ichabods’ upperclassmen. Roy is a transfer from Saint Gregory’s (Okla.), where he was the topscoring Cavalier in two events over the fall of 2017. Three Ichabods make up the sophomore class, including the two top-scorers of the fall in Blake Allen and Burns. Ian Trebilcock joins the two, as Trebilcock competed in all five team events in the fall and had a top 25 finish at The Mule, hosted by Central Missouri. Austin Kang, Massey and Whit Parker make up the freshman class that will be entering their first springs season as Ichabods. All three were named All-State selections during their time in high school; Kang in Oklahoma, Massey in Kansas and Parker in Arkansas.

• The Washburn University Foundation assets of approximately $152 million rank second in the state on a per-student basis. • Each year, more than 1,000 students participate in internship opportunities to gain hands-on experience in a professional work environment prior to graduation.

• The Ichabod. Washburn’s mascot honors the school’s early benefactor, Ichabod Washburn, a Massachusetts industrialist. The original design of the studious-looking, tuxedo-clad figure was created in 1938 by Bradbury Thompson (ba ‘34).

Loren Ferré Athletic Director Loren Ferré became Washburn’s director of athletics in February of 1996 after a six-year appointment at Black Hills State University in Spearfish, S.D. Ferré is a dynamic leader who has implemented many internal changes within the athletic department since arriving on campus. He has put increasing scholarships and departmental fund-raising at the top of his list. He has been at Washburn for 33 of the 39 MIAA titles won and 76 of the 86 NCAA appearances in school

history. In 2005, Ferré was named the Central Region Athletic Director of the Year. At Washburn, Ferré has been instrumental in the establishment of a strong Ichabod Club support team and the raising of funds for athletic scholarships. While at BHSU, Ferré was also director of the Donald E. Young Sports Fitness Center, a 172,000 square foot, $10.2 million facility. During his Black Hills tenure, the athletics department nearly tripled its outside revenue, including large increases in ticket sales and scholarship funding. All 10 varsity teams won a conference title in his final three years. Before joining the staff at Black Hills State, Ferré spent 17 years at the University of North Texas. He was the director of the Coliseum (1987-90) and was the associate and assistant director since 1980. He held the post of event coordinator (1978-80). Ferré is a 1971 graduate of Texas Christian University, earning a bachelor of arts degree. He earned a master’s in journalism from North Texas in 1982. Ferré also served a three-year term as Chair of the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball South Central Regional Chairman. Ferré and his wife Sarah, have two daughters, Caitlin and Hope.

The strength and conditioning center as well as the athletic training facilities help Washburn student-athletes be ready for the court and the field... • The Whiting Field house expansion project was a $7.2 million renovation completed prior to the 2010-11 school year and is one of the largest training facilities in the MIAA.

• There are more than 12,000 square feet of workout space inside the weight room facility. • There are 21 weight platforms for multiple teams to use at the same time.

• A 39-yard warm up lane made from field turf gives student athletes an area to jog and loosen up and cool down after their workouts.

• The Washburn Athletic Training center was renovated in 2012 and features a Hydroworx aquatic therapy pool along with additional therapy and injury prevention equipment and treatment options.
