WASHBURN FACILITIES

The strength and conditioning center as well as the athletic training facilities help Washburn student-athletes be ready for the court and the field...

• The Whiting Field house expansion project was a $7.2 million renovation completed prior to the 2010-11 school year and is one of the largest training facilities in the MIAA. • There are more than 12,000 square feet of workout space inside the weight room facility. • There are 21 weight platforms for multiple teams to use at the same time. • A 39-yard warm up lane made from field turf gives student athletes an area to jog and loosen up and cool down after their workouts. • The Washburn Athletic Training center was renovated in 2012 and features a Hydroworx aquatic therapy pool along with additional therapy and injury prevention equipment and treatment options.

CONDITIONING AREA GAHNSTROM FIELD

The Washburn Ichabods have played every season of action at the Washburn Softball Complex which was renamed to Gahnstrom Field by the Washburn Board of Regents at its meeting on Oct. 29, 2020, in honor of Bill and Emilie Gahnstrom and their generous support to the Washburn softball program. Prior to the 2001 season, the facility underwent its first major upgrade since the first season of 1970. A new press box was constructed with restrooms, concession stands, training table and storage on the lower level and a working press area on the second level. Before the start of play in the 2002 season, the facility was completed with the addition of a public address system. The complex houses two fields with the 200 foot fence down the lines and 210 feet to center. Each field has two separate microphone systems for announcing. The past 22 seasons, the Ichabods have enjoyed great success playing at home compiling a 240-125 (.656) record. The first game played in the complex with the new press box was a doubleheader sweep over Bethany winning 13-0 and 8-0. The first run was scored by Stacie Carpenter who scored via the first hit - a home run by Katie Schmidt in the second inning. Prior to the start of the 2020 season the field became the third in the MIAA to have a completely turfed field. The facility upgrades also include new fencing, bullpens and batting cages added to the new dugouts that were added prior to the 2019 season along with a net backstop and padding. Additional bleachers were installed prior to the 2020 season and in the spring of 2014, a new 36-foot LED scoreboard was installed for use replacing the original scoreboard. New lights were installed prior to the 2021 season at the field. GAHNSTROM FIELD

This $20 million state-of-the-art facility was unanimously approved by the Washburn Board of Regents in December 2017 and has since received more than $6 million in donations for its construction. The facility will be located in the southwest end of campus along 21st Street between the baseball and softball fields. What about seating you ask, well, there will be plenty of it... 1,500 seats to be exact, allowing Washburn the ability to host regional and national championships right in Topeka, Kansas.

Once built, the facility will have two distinct areas. One side will be a 100-yard turf field for use by Washburn’s football, soccer, baseball and softball teams. The other side... well, that’ll be specifically for the cross country and track & field teams. Separated by drop down netting, the indoor track & field side will rival most NCAA Division I facilities, let alone Division II. This climate controlled facility will allow student-athletes complete freedom to train at optimal levels throughout the year. Other features of the track & field side include a 60-meter runway located in the infield, along with designated lanes for jumps and pole vault all surrounded by a 200-meter banked track - the only one in Division II and one just 28 in all of the NCAA.
