DEAR STUDENTS For kids, writing a journal is not only to write about what we just did or, have already done, but also to selfexplore and keep expressing our life aspects through our fingers. It is but natural that we may not be able to write grammatically correct at first. Initially it could be a good idea to express our ideas using illustrations drawing pictures and using colours to express ourselves. Imagining and writing short stories or cartoons expressing our thoughts and ideas. Remember students, “Practice makes perfect.” By getting thoughts out of our head and writing them down on pieces of paper, moreover, providing them with a chance to write something, especially a journal, gives kids a safe place to have fun with our creativity and to improve our writing abilities and other skills.

Enjoy writing! Foreign Language Department Teachers

Writing Tips #1 Essay structure

For a 2000-word essay: (proportion of words can be adjusted)

- 10% for your introduction (200 words) - 80% for your body (1,600 words) - 10% for your conclusion (200 words)

What an introduction needs to do:

• Tell your readers why this is an important area to study.

What a body needs to do:

• Each paragraph should develop one point only, which should be clear from the first sentence.

What a conclusion needs to do:

• Clearly state what you found out. PAGE

Writing Tips #3 Paraphrasing VS Summarising

Paraphrasing A writing method using different words to re-express an idea contained in a short section of source material. The paraphrased information should be in a simpler and shorter form that makes the original meaning clearer. Summarising A common reason for using your own words and style to shorten a longer section of text or a whole text. It can be short and powerful, often giving the main point of one or more texts in just a couple of sentences. PAGE
