The Museum of Innocence by Orhan Pamuk
The Museum of the Other Reflecting on my passing years studying and practicing as an architect, I realized my greatest interest in engaging the world by promoting mutual understanding between architect and others, architecture and others, by means of empathetic input with real and deep understanding of others. Aristotle sees every object an expression of a this-now-here—the linear time connects every indivisible moment. I have always been interested in everyman’s everyday experiences. Collecting objects whose that-past-there intertwines with personal history of their owner. Those moments in the life of an object induce my senses and imagination towards an understanding of their owners at certain time of their life. The habit of collecting others’ objects benefits for my dream of building the museum of the other, preserving exhibits concerned with time and memory within, and sincerely touching the world between illusory and reality they create. During my studio review at National Cheng Kung University in 2013, Mr. Huang Sheng-Yuan, the chief architect of Field office Architects in Taiwan, told me that the highest social pattern might be one without architects. I now realize how that is possible. I am not denying the value of architects. In contrast, it is precisely the expression of architects’ imagination—the ability to imagine themselves as others that values. In this sense, they could speak for the time and land which are unable to speak and individuals whose voices are suppressed. When the profession begins to be obsessed with self-construction and self-expression, its possibilities are gradually narrowing in reality. Only when the profession begins to acknowledge that the life it illustrates has the potential to happen to the other and his world is also the world of the other—one related to time, land, and the bottom of society — could we acquire sustained and innocent imagination. Just as what President L. Rafael Reif believed in, as an institution, MIT do some of its best work when it turns outward to the world. I am attracted to MIT not because of its reputation, but the value it encourages — a constant pursuit of ways to listen to one another. If I were admitted into MIT, I would definitely benefit from MIT’s openness to diverse talent, culture, and ideas, and would be able to contribute more to the discussion of humanity and sensitivity to the academic community. Therefore, I am applying for MIT SMArchS program of architecture and urbanism to continue my research on how to invent live and warm architecture and environments, taking advantageous of MIT’s cross-disciplinary context and resource in urban study, science, and sociology, and how to use architecture to solve real-world problem, to reveal basic human nature — with sympathy, humility, decency, respect, and optimism.

An Electricity Meter My first exhibit is an electricity meter. An electricity meter is a manager of everyday life. However, during people’s collective life of compound yard, an electricity meter gradually becomes the only material link which relates to local’s personal life. I came across this group of electricity meters in No.36 Qianliang Hutong. It was like a manifesto of privacy. No one could intrude other’s personal possession, even personal space. Whereas, the more residents care about their own life, the more they ignore the public environment they are living in. Therefore, I take the electricity meter in this Museum of the Other. As an observer, it reminds me of how other people care about their privacy.

Strolling around the Hutong, encountering a grandpa enjoying the opera on the radio in his pocket, or a grandma reading the newspaper at the entrance to share the news with her neighbors, you will never find life colorless, even if it is restricted within the confined Hutong.
The young people narrowly dwell here. The high density living environment for underclass integrates multiple life styles. You can find diverse expresses of each company showing up gradually observing through the gateway of the courtyard.
It can be easily found some twisted Chinese characters carved on the mottled red-painted wooden gates in the Hutong. That is the way how the kids draw their dreams.

Decentralization of conventional public place The conventional community center is a proper “isolated center”, requiring people to visit specially. It is a space of heroism, which is set as a center isolated from the community to build a center-toward “center”. There is no direct relationship between it and resident behaviors and routes home. Therefore, we expect to change the rigid status quo and dispel the sense of center.

Renovation steps
Minimize intervention I show great approval and respect to existing situation, which is the living dependence of local residents. I hope to improve their living condition and minimize disturbance to original life through following steps:
Steel frame; Easily constructed timber material
[1]Keep the existing brick walls. [2]Build the public area by steel-timber structure. [3]Protect privacy by glass bricks. [4]Strengthen the sense of public sphere by combination of new and old brick walls to restrict expansion building privately. [5]Arrange doors and windows, heating and ventilation and barrier-free facilities. [6]The reshaped landscape of pavement and planting.

A Merry-Go-Round Toy I met a merry-go-round toy on the seashore of Shoubuta. After swept by the Great East Japan Earthquake, the beach of Shoubuta has become a wasteland where nobody would come by. In order to protect people’s life and possession, government has launched policy to build embankment along beach. Nevertheless, locals are worried about the ecological side effect and are sorrowful of being unable to return the sea. The collective memory of residents are all about happy time with beach. The barriers are not only physical ones defending disaster but also obstacles between human and sea. The merry-go-round toy is a special exhibit, telling the joyful laugh on this land. Therefore, the infratopia is designed for getting the lost happiness back for locals meanwhile providing a secure life.

One day with infratopia
Recently, a new complex embankment has been established between the seashore and beach, which gradually became the focus of Shoubuta.
The local residents gradually come over the beach for recreation again, where they never appear since tsunami happened. Since my friend has told me that the interior of the embankment is totally another different world, I would like explore it now.
Different changeable Plugins with various functions are inserted in the structural frameworks. Sitting in the restaurant-plugin, I could witness the happiness of children playing in the opposite amusement park.
Other plugins consist the boutique stores, the museum, the education and exhibition pavilion, the barbecue kiosk, the public toilet and bathroom, the aquarium and the greenhouse. Local residents could always find their appropriate plugins.
Going downstairs, children are playing various entertainment programs, such as water slide and Ferris Wheel.
People taking activities could look and be looked in the atrium.
When earthquake comes, the embankment could resist tsunami for some degree, leaving people time for escape.
Go with the people flow in tunnel, I could finally go outside without any harm.

An Hourglass Previously, coal mines were discovered in Fushun, attracting various businessmen, labors and dreamers. They crazily grabbed from the earth. The land has its own revenge. When coal mines are used up, large quantity of pits appeared on the ground surface. The households are sinking altogether with the soil. An hourglass is a symbol of time shift. We all admit that the past would never represent again. Still, we use our own methods to represent it. When an inverted house is located on the water pits, the reflection it projects in some moments confuses me of the dream and reality. It is a lesson told by land, making us return the land to land itself and consistently warning us that the past would never appear again.

Instantaneous Bamboo wabi-sabi Space design
Type: Competition Collaborator: Yu Yan, Feng Zhu Site: Shibuya, Japan Completion Date: October, 2015 Excellent Prize of Circos International Architecture Competition
A Bamboo Lantern The bamboo contents everything because of its empty as inside, receives ‘ki’ as outside because of its joint, and mottled shadow because of its verdancy as poetic imagery. The beauty of Wabi-Sabi is based on years and texture and creating transparency between inside and outside phenomenally as the mottled shadow reflects on the gauze. The bamboo is light and easy to assemble, making the establishment of instantaneous inside possible——to create a utopia of transience beyond city, which is the thinking of inner peace among chaos in a modern busy city. The bamboo space hanging on the urban façade is as light as lantern, which could be stored on balcony after use and be expanded to a multilayer micro space through the control of layer via pulley. The characteristics of bamboo materials—— light, beautiful and dreamy are extracted and reorganized to the bustling city cement forest, bringing a fragrance of tea, a piece of silence, a moment of thinking. People in such heterotopia space full of Zen could drink, look, meditate and cultivate themselves. What is outside? Real outside is hiding in inside authentically, vice verse. What is inner peace? Real inner peace is hiding in the very chaos.

lIFENS memorial design for AYLAN KURdI
Type: Competition Collaborator: Yu Yan, Feng Zhu Site: Bodrum, Turkey Completion Date: June, 2016 Selected for International VELUX Award of Architectural Students
A Magnifier Aylan Kurdi was the very boy found died on the beach of Turkey. He was the tragedy caused by war. A magnifier has distinguished physical features. With the distance between the observer and the object changing, the figure appears behind magnifier would correspondingly change. It experiences the stages of blur - clear - blur, representing that the hope arises while finally fades, showing that the opposite bank - the destination becomes a place out of reach forever. A magnifier also focus the daylight, projecting facula on the beach side. It inspires different memorial behavior of people passing by. A memorial of an ordinary people is nothing. The 3 year-old boy Aylan Kurdi's body was washed up on the beach of Bodrum, Turkey, with his face buried in sands and his body constantly beaten by waves. I would like to use light to commemorate Aylan Kurdi on the Bodrum beach where his body was found.

Suhrawardi's Islamic philosophy of illumination provides inspiration
Theory: philosophy of light Islamic philosopher Suhrawardi proposes that the purpose of human is to be illuminated and return to his/her origin in the end in the book philosophy of illumination. Taking Suhrawardi's theory as a cultural background, we choose light as a medium to commemorate this event at the ship's source, Bodrum, in order to let the boy return to his origin, to inspire people to spontaneously commemorate under the light and shadow, to heal the pain of heart, to reflect on the suffering the war brings to mankind.

Physical light properties of lens
Strategy: design a memorial lens Therefore, a monumental lens, Lifens, is designed to respond to people's memorial behavior. It takes advantages of two physical properties of light, namely lens' fraction and focusing effect.
On the one hand, the Lifens uses light's fraction to tell story. It expresses three memorial stages from far and near via the refraction of light: 1) when people walk towards the monumental lens on the beach, the destination seen in the lens, the Kos Island, gradually becomes clearer. The opposite bank becomes synonymous with hope. 2) For that the focal length of the lens is shorter than the distance between the Bodrum and Kos, as people walk closer, they find it just a subverted and remote illusion the moment the image of destination could be seen clearly. 3) As people arrive in front of the lens, the image of island in lens finally becomes out of focus, while the opposite bank becomes out of reach.

Solution for guiding memorial behavior On the other hand, the Lifens uses lens' focus function to guide memorial behavior. With the change of solar elevation angle and azimuth angle during the day, from sunrise to sunset, between rising tide and falling tide, a time-varying facula appears on the beach due to Lifens' focus of daylight. People coming by spontaneously carve the boy's name in the facula on the illuminated sands, place flowers, write mourning poems down, commemorate the boy in their own ways, wishing the boy's life could last eternally in the light.

Acknowledgment I did begin to build my own museum of the other several years before when I met my tutor Peigen Chai. I had not quite decided to become an architect later. I had come to suspect insisting being an architect, lost in various self-expressions by others, but I was not yet sure what path of my life would prefer. He took me to the Hutongs of Beijing, presenting an interesting people’s living scenario in front of me. I spent one month commuting between my dorm and the Hutongs, gradually realizing that architecture is not something that merely expresses yourself but to document the authenticity. Being the other means that you need to take the position of others. I first found it frustrated because it is sometimes even hard for one to understand the other. However, Chai told me that the basic nature of people are the same. I could finally achieve the same emotional connection with them. I have to thank him, introducing the sympathy and identification into my personal architectural world.
