FOUND POEM CHALLENGE In honor of National Poetry Month, here is everything you need to know about how to create a “found poem”. What’s a found poem?

A good nutshell description would be “poems that are composed from words and phrases found in another text.” A New York Times found poem uses words and phrases taken from one Times article, past or present, or several. You can mix and combine these words and phrases into a new piece. Use any magazine or newspaper you want. What are the rules? Each poem must be 14 or fewer lines long. 2. You may give it your own original title if you like. The poem itself should use no more than two of your own words. The rest of the words and phrases should come from some article or articles published in The New York Times, past or present. Here is an example using the recent Tsunami in Japan 1.

Here in Taro So unshakeable, this town’s faith-its seawall, Some jogged on it, strolled on it, rode their bicycle’s on it. But within a few minutes, waves tore through the wall Sweeping away, taking away most of Taro. Other survivors, Ms. Araya walking atop the inner wall, peering down at the ruins of Taro: “We felt protected, I believe.” Isamu Hashiba, from nearby to attend a cremation, Walking on the seawall on Wednesday: “people were looking at the tsunami from the seawall Because they felt safe.” Mr. Yamamoto, now living in a shelter, His mother invited him to take a bath in their home. “I’m going tomorrow,” he said.
