SRHS GREAT BOOKS CLUB The English Teachers in Shore Regional are passionate about reading and discussing all the great characters and stories found in the vast world of literature. We are always looking for ways to transfer our passion for reading to our students. In the past few years, the English department has implemented a successful independent reading program in our individual classrooms. Readers of all abilities, motivated and unmotivated, cherished the idea of being given the responsibility to choose a work of literature they found to be of value and to share the experience in their unique way. The Independent Reading Program became beloved by the students, but it was not enough to quench the growing thirst for reading and discussion. Due to this overwhelming desire to continue their discovery of great literature, the students began to ask Ms. Bahrs and me start a club. Consequently, the Great Books Group was formed. This group is a mixture of teachers and students who collectively decide on a novel to read and discuss their experience every two weeks over snacks in room A-8. The students have already read The Scarlet Letter and have decided to read the incredibly popular Hunger Games next. Students are given a stress free environment to discuss why classic literature has stood the test of time and what modern works have the potential to become “great books.”
