A look back... Hello, land lovers! In your hands is the Blue Ridge Land Conservancy’s annual report for its 2015-16 business year. Last year was one of many successes, and we’re proud to share some of them with you: • We worked with Campbell County landowners Dale and Lisa Moore to protect their 262-acre Wagyu beef cattle farm along the Big Otter River. Dale and Lisa’s agreement protects the rolling farm from excess development while protecting the water quality in the river, an important tributary of the Roanoke River. You can learn more about this amazing farm and its owners later in this report! • At the Conservation Celebration in the fall of 2015, we honored long-time environmental advocates and Mill Mountain supporters Betty Field of Roanoke and daughter Liza Field of Wytheville with our highest honor, the A. Victor Thomas Environmental Stewardship Award. Conservation easement donors and land protection advocates Jim and Jill Woltz of Roanoke County received our Land Saver Award.

• We kicked off our 20th anniversary year with a 20-mile relay hike across the Roanoke Valley, from Carvins Cove to Mill Mountain. Teams from local businesses and organizations took 1-2 mile long legs of the day-long journey which ended in front of the Roanoke Star.
• Our school education programs continued to grow. In addition to our popular Bay Day program for Botetourt County fourth graders, we added a River Day program for Floyd County fourth graders focused on water quality in the Little River and New River watersheds. Students got their feet wet and their hands dirty as they explored a creek on a conserved farm, while also learning about pollution and land conservation.
• The 2015 Outdoor Adventure Series ended with a moonlit walk in Carvins Cove and a bat box-building class on Mill Mountain, while the 2016 series kicked off with our annual Mill Mountain potluck dinner and bird walk, and a guided hike up Franklin County’s towering Cahas Mountain. And the list goes on—volunteers gave of their time, donors gave their money, staff and board worked hard to monitor and defend our existing conserved properties and add new ones to the fold. It couldn’t have happened without you and your support. Thank you for being a part of our land conservation family, and please enjoy our 2015-16 annual report.

Dale and Lisa Moore
Dale Moore is a busy company chief, farmer, land saver, grandfather
omebody has got to save the land or what is it going to be like down the road?” Dale Moore asked as he sat in his home on a windy hilltop near Altavista, about 50 miles east of Roanoke. In 2015, Dale signed a conservation agreement with the Blue Ridge Land Conservancy, to protect 255 acres of hill and dale along the Big Otter River.
changes to how the farm operated. The family operation follows a strict plan set forth by their Japanese consultant that includes the cattle being grass-fed and finished with a Japanese finishing method. It takes a long 30 months to finish Wagyu beef, but pays off in the end with a better product. In addition to selling meat, Dale sells individual cattle as well as Wagyu embryos and semen.
Dale, founder and chairman of a large electrical and mechanical company, said his goal is to “make a model farm” to show his son and daughter and six grandchildren “the right way to do it.” He’s well on the way with a herd of over 100 Wagyu beef cattle, a couple of Tennessee Walking Horses and clean pastures. Dale’s wife Lisa keeps honeybees on the farm. Nestled in Campbell County, the farm enjoys a striking view of the Peaks of Otter.
Dale’s efforts to save land started with a nearby Virginia Techsponsored meeting, promoting projects to reduce pollution in streams. There he learned about a Natural Resources Conservation Service program which would pay part of the cost of fencing off streams. This applied to his 1.5 miles of frontage on Big Otter River. As he thought about caring for his land long-term, the next step was a conservation agreement.
Dale’s love and appreciation for farming began when he was young. His grandfather handed down the love of looking after the land. He spent several years purchasing properties to form the farm he now owns. He had been raising Angus beef cattle for 20 years before tasting Wagyu beef at lunch one day. After sampling the meat, he was determined to set the farm on a new direction.
Dale says he does about 95 percent of the farm work, with help in hay season. But he says, “Farming is not like work. You can go from daylight to dark on a farm and it’s not like work.” At 62, “I feel like a boy,” he adds.
Because the breed is well-guarded by Japan, Dale first had to make several
With Dale’s commitment to conservation, we are happy to say he will be able to enjoy working the farm for years to come thanks to the newly-signed conservation agreement.

ABOUT THE BLUE RIDGE LAND CONSERVANCY We save land! Founded in 1996, the Blue Ridge Land Conservancy protects over 17,000 acres of land and more than 44 miles of streams with conservation agreements. We work with rural landowners who want to voluntarily protect their land from excessive development and protect the natural resources on their property. The Conservancy also works with local schools to teach children about the value of clean water and open lands, and provides fun, family-based outdoor programs for the general public. Our core service area includes the counties of Bedford, Botetourt, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Montgomery, and Roanoke, and the cities of Roanoke and Salem. The Conservancy also protects land outside this area on occasion. The Blue Ridge Land Conservancy is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization incorporated in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Conservancy is governed by a volunteer Board of Trustees and relies on the financial contributions of individuals, families, and businesses in the greater Roanoke region to carry out its mission.
