A CHAMPIONSHIP PROGRAM Year in and year out the West Virginia swimming and diving teams send swimmers to the NCAA Championships, as well as finishing near the top of the conference championships. In 2012, Rachael Burnett, Kata Fodor, Mandie Nugent and Danielle Smith made up the 800 free relay team that earned All-America Honorable Mention honors at the NCAA Championships. Individually, Burnett earned All-America Honorable Mention honors in the 500 free and 1650 free, while Nugent earned the honor in the 200 fly. At the 2012 Big East Championships, coach Vic Riggs was named the Big East Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Swimming Coach of the Year and Burnett was named the Big East Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Most Outstanding Swimmer.

BIG 12 CONFERENCE The new Big 12 ushers in its 17th year by welcoming a new commissioner and two new members as it continues to promote the stability, strength and success of one of the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s premier athletic conferences. Bob Bowlsby was named the Conferenceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fourth commissioner on May 4, 2012, after spending the previous six years as director of athletics at Stanford University. Big 12 institutions create a league that encompasses five states and nearly 37 million people. More than 4,200 student-athletes from across the United States and around the World compete annually in the sports sponsored by the Conference. The Big 12 is a strong conference that, like WVU, values quality academic and athletic programs, and has a great tradition of success. Whether in the pool, in the classroom, or within the community, the student-athletes, administrators, coaches and meet officials of the Big 12 support the highest ideals in sportsmanship. The Big 12 conducts postseason championships for 20 of its 23 sports, including swimming and diving. The Big 12 has produced 12 NCAA Championships teams, as well as 60 NCAA individual champions In its first 16 years, the Conference has distributed more than $1.6 billion to its member institutions. The conference office is headquartered in Irving, Texas.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING Athletic excellence and strength and conditioning go handin-hand at West Virginia University. WVUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s strength and conditioning staff ensures that the swimming and diving athletes are on year-long programs designed to continue improving the fitness capabilities needed in their sports. The primary training goal for the Mountaineer swimmers and divers is injury prevention by correcting muscle imbalances and improving joint mobility. A more resilient athlete is a better athlete! The next focus is maximizing sports performance â&#x20AC;&#x201C; primarily lower body strength and power, upper body strength and power, core strength, muscular endurance and general work capacity and fitness. Plyometric/jump training is done to increase explosiveness on starts, turns, underwater kicking and height off the boards. Each athlete is educated on correct dietary habits and essential vitamins and minerals necessary to be an elite athlete. Student-athletes have the opportunity to meet with nutritionists, go on guided grocery store tours and receive diets designed specifically for them.

ATHLETIC TRAINING The West Virginia athletic training program looks to get its student-athletes back on the field in a timely manner while providing quality health care for its student-athletes and coaches. The scope of the athletic training services encompass various domains which includes injury recognition, treatment, rehabilitation, prevention, education and counseling that will enable the athlete to maintain an optimal quality of life beyond the span of athletic competition. Multiple athletic training rooms are available for studentathletes, furnished with the latest in technology and equipment. The athletic training staff will work in conjunction with the team physicians and athletic administration to assure the student-athletes receive quality care throughout their career at WVU.

FACILITIES The facility covers 119,000-square feet, with the pool area itself covering 12,730 square feet. The pool is eight lanes and features a complete Colorado Timing System, along with a large pool deck. The divers use a 13-1/2 foot diving well equipped with two 3-meter and two 1-meter boards, as well as a trampoline. The center is equipped with seating for approximately 500 spectators and also houses its own weight room and cardio facility. The bottom floor has two men’s and women’s locker rooms. Recently, there have been a number of renovations to the pool itself, including underwater filming and review and TiVo taping for the diving program. Renovations in the upstairs foyer have been completed and feature a WVU Swimming and Diving Wall of Fame section. The coaches’ offices have recently been renovated, while there is a common area between the head coach and assistant coaches’ offices that features couches and a flat-screen television for the student-athletes.

COMMUNITY SERVICE The WVU swimming and diving teams recognize that it’s important to win in the pool, but the squad also realizes it’s equally important to win over the community by giving back in every possible aspect. Not only have the Mountaineers helped Morgantown become a better place through various humanitarian efforts, but the teams make the extra stride to travel outside of the immediate area to lend a hand. The team also regularly donates its time and knowledge by hosting and teaching local youth swim clubs, including West Virginia Aquatics, to learn the fundamentals of the sport. Along with strengthening the youngsters’ skills, they also teach the participants the importance of good sportsmanship, courage, determination and hard work. The WVU men’s team has been partnering with Habitat for Humanity to help rebuild houses throughout the past year. Mountaineer coaches and swimmers also take part in Relay for Life of Monongalia County, the American Cancer Society’s signature activity. It offers everyone in a community an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer. Teams of people camp out at WVU’s outdoor track and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Relays are an overnight event, up to 24 hours in length.

STUDENT-ATHLETE SERVICES West Virginia University offers a variety of services and programs to help student-athletes maximize their academic potential. Department staff members work with coaches, on campus student service providers and faculty to help student-athletes meet the unique demands of the classroom, the sporting arena and the personal-social challenges they face as developing adults. While many of the headlines center on the Mountaineers’ accomplishments on the playing field, West Virginia athletes have also made some noteworthy strides in the classroom. Some of those strides include a string of nine consecutive years where the department has had at least one first team Academic All-American. To help its student athletes achieve academic success, one of the nation’s finest facilities resides in the WVU Coliseum – The Athletic Academic Performance Center. The 8,000-square foot facility provides individual and group study areas, a plethora of computer stations and the latest in fingerprint technology used when signing in.

STUDENT-ATHLETE SERVICES

West Virginia University’s graduation rate for student-athletes has been impressive, to say the least, over the past eight years. The ratio of student-athletes graduating to the general student body has increased almost every year. WVU’s combined varsity athletic teams have an Academic Progress Rate (APR) score of 975 according to data released today by the NCAA. The APR is based upon eligibility and retention of student-athletes over a four-year period, used as an assessment of real-time academic success. WVU’s average APR score of 975 is up one point from last year’s average is higher than the NCAA’s overall four-year APR average score of 973. For the 2010-11 academic year, West Virginia had three teams with perfect 1,000 scores: gymnastics, rowing and men’s soccer. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) provides a forum for the “voice of the student-athlete” on WVU’s campus. SAAC membership provides feedback to administration about how to better WVU athletic programs. They offer input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes’ lives on NCAA member institution campuses.

Student Living Experience: The First-Year Experience—unique among state universities—helps students navigate their first year at WVU. A sampling of services: Lincoln Hall, a residential college; Resident Faculty Leaders, faculty couples who live in the halls to mentor and guide students; and Adventure West Virginia, an outdoor freshman orientation program. All WVU students benefit from a vibrant array of student life programs, including a Festival of Ideas lecture series, bringing the world’s top minds to campus to share their experiences and knowledge; WVUp All Night, a weekend package of safe, fun, and healthy activities; an award-winning Student Recreation Center. Transportation: University buses operate free on a year-round basis as does the Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system—a computer-directed system that glides along 8.7 miles of guideway between Downtown, Evansdale, and Health Sciences Center campuses. In addition, Morgantown’s expanded MountainLine bus service offers free rides to students and employees. WVU ID required for all services. Safety: WVU has one of the safest college campuses in America, with 24-hour police protection and 37 outdoor emergency phones. Student Organizations: Choose from over 300 student organizations, or participate in an active intramural program and a variety of club sports. Study Abroad: More than 900 students participate in University-led study abroad programs and international exchanges. Civic Engagement: The Center for Civic Engagement develops and organizes service learning and volunteer opportunities for students and faculty and consults with academic units on incorporating civic engagement into the curriculum. Last year, about 15,726 WVU students contributed 204,000 hours of service to the community. Scholarships & Aid: Approximately $10 million a year is awarded by the WVU Scholars Program; more than 5,000 students benefit from this program annually. In addition, there are many different types of scholarships available based on academic record, financial need, group affiliation, or some combination of these factors. Parents Club: The Mountaineer Parents Club, with more than 20,000 members in clubs across the state and nation, fosters success by connecting parents and family members with the student experience. The organization sponsors events on and off-campus, has a newsletter, a toll-free helpline (1-800-WVU-0096), parent electronic news, and a “Parent Perk” program. Membership is free.

Vic Riggs Head Coach Sixth Season

Now in his sixth season at West Virginia, Vic Riggs has helped the WVU swimming and diving teams climb to a nationally acclaimed status, and with an academic support system designed around the swimming and diving programs, Riggs is looking to build a team that also is recognized nationally for academic success. 2011-12 Riggs had his most successful season as a head coach, leading the women and men to third- and fourth-place finishes, respectively, as the Big East Championships. For his efforts, he was named the Big East Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year. The team placed 15 members on the all-conference squad, with Rachael Burnett and Mandie Nugent leading the way with seven top-three finishes for the women, while Taylor Camp had three for the men. Burnett was named the Big East Women’s Most Outstanding Swimmer. Four different women earned a total of seven All-America Honorable Mention honors at the NCAA Championships as the team placed 26th. Burnett, Nugent, Kata Fodor and Danielle Smith finished 16th in the 800 free relay. Burnett earned the honor twice more, finishing 14th in the 500 free and 11th in the 1650 free, while Nugent took ninth in the 200 fly.

Riggs also sent eight swimmers to the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb., the most ever from WVU. The Mountaineers were represented in 15 different events during the Trials. In total, 10 school records, three pool records and five Big East records were broken, with Burnett leading the way behind four individual and two relay records. 2007-11 Both squads continued success in the 2010-11 season, with the women finishing third at the Big East Championships, while the men finished in fourth place. A total of six school records were broken throughout the season, one being a Big East record. For the men, Jared Goldthorpe broke the 200 back school record with a 10th-place finish

in the NCAA Championships to earn All-America Honorable Mention status. The women’s squad saw Burnett and Nugent named the Co-Big East Women’s Most Outstanding Swimmers at the Big East Championships. Burnett took wins in the 500 free and 400 IM at the championships, while finishing sixth in the 200 fly. Nugent won the 200 fly on the final day of competition after achieving a Big East and school record time of 1:56.64 in the preliminary session. Nugent also finished second in the 100 fly and fourth in the 500 free. Riggs had an astonishing season in 200910, with the women breaking three Big East records, 12 school records and three pools records, while the men broke four school records and two pool records.

At the NCAA Championships, Burnett, Kayla Andrews, Morgan Callaway and Shaunna Purtell earned All-America Honorable Mention honors with their 15th-place finish in the 400 free relay. Andrews, Burnett, Callaway, Goldthorpe, Nugent and George Farquhar were all individual Big East champions as well. In 2008-09, there were 11 school records broken for the women’s team and five for the men. The women also sent three athletes to the NCAA Championships, with Michael Walker representing the men, finishing the 400 IM with AllAmerica Honorable Mention honors. Andrews, Callaway, Lindsey Largo and Walker were all Big East champions, with Callaway being named women’s Big East Most Outstanding Swimmer at the meet. The 2008-09 recruiting class also was a best for Riggs and his staff, as the men’s class was ranked 17th nationally and the women 24th. In 2007-08, Riggs’ first season, the West Virginia women’s team broke 12 team, three pool and one Big East record. They also had three individual qualifiers for the NCAA Championships. On the men’s side, the squad broke four pool, three team and three Big East records, while Kevin Donohue became West Virginia’s first men’s All-American for an individual event. Donohue placed fifth in the 100 breast at the NCAA Championships and helped the Mountaineers to a 33rd place finish. Riggs guided the team to third- and fourthplace finishes at the Big East Championships as well. The Mountaineers had nine individual champions and two relay champions. Throughout his coaching career, Riggs has coached numerous U.S. National and NCAA Qualifiers, along with 12 Olympic medalists.

During the 2008 season, Nick Delic earned ESPN The Magazine Academic AllAmerican Third Team honors, as well as being named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 2 First Team. Success as an Assistant Riggs came to West Virginia from Georgia, where he served as an assistant coach for the Bulldogs in 2006-07. There, Riggs assisted the head coach in daily workouts and designed and implemented the sprint program, while also assisting with the meet line-ups. Prior to his stint at Georgia, Riggs coached at USC under Mark Schubert, guiding numerous Trojan sprinters and breaststrokers to All-America recognition. Academic Success The women’s squad has earned Collegiate Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) All-Academic Team honors nine consecutive semesters, with Andrews and Callaway being named CSCAA Scholar All-Americans in 2009 and 2010, while Largo and Ashley Malik earned the honor in 2009 and 2010, respectively. The men’s team was named an AllAcademic Team for the spring 2010 and spring 2011 term with a minimum of a 3.0 GPA. Individually, Brandon Robinson was named a CSCAA Scholar All-American in 2010, while Pablo Marmolejo earned the honor in 2009. The teams ranked in one of the top in the Big East for academics, having a total of 43 women and 34 men being named Big East Academic All-Stars in Riggs’ four seasons.

Among the athletes Riggs coached during that time was the USC All-American Sandeno, who was a part of the 800m free relay that won a gold medal and broke a world record at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. Riggs also served as the age group head coach at Saddleback Valley Aquatics in Lake Forest, Calif., from 1991-95. He was an assistant coach at Cal State San Bernardino from 1990-91 and also served as head age group coach for Riverside Aquatics in that time. He began his coaching career as the senior assistant at Fullerton Area Sports Team (FAST) in 1989. Prior to Coaching Riggs competed at California-Berkeley, earning All-America honors in 1986 and swam on Cal’s second-place NCAA team. He was ranked seventh in the world in the 1500m free and ninth in the 400m free in 1985 and was in the Top 25 in the world in both events in 1984. A 1985 World University Games participant for the U.S., he was an Olympic Trials qualifier in 1984 and 1988. He was a 28-time qualifier for the U.S. Senior Nationals from 1983-89 and won a junior national title in 1982.

Damion Dennis Associate Head Coach Sixth Season

Damion Dennis enters his sixth season as the with the Mountaineer swimming and diving program and his first as an associate head coach. Dennis serves as the sprint specialist and assists coach Vic Riggs with day-to-day operations and recruiting. Dennis helped to send eight swimmers to the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb., competing in 15 different events. Tim Squires swam in the 50 free and 100 free, while Brad Eichenseer swam the 50 free and Taylor Camp in the 100 free. The 2011-12 season was WVU’s most productive under the current coaching staff, as the women placed 26th at the 2012 NCAA Championships. Rachael Burnett, Kata Fodor, Mandie Nugent and Danielle Smith earned All-America Honorable Mention honors as part of the 16th-place 800 free relay team. Burnett earned the honor twice more, finishing 14th in the 500 free and 11th in the 1650 free, while Nugent finished ninth in the 200 fly. At the 2012 Big East Championships, the women took third place and the men finished in fourth place, as 15 members of the squad earned All-Big East honors. Burnett and Nugent led the women with seven top-three finishes, while Taylor Camp had three for the men. Burnett was named the Big East Women’s Most Outstanding Swimmer.

Dennis has brought a wealth of knowledge from his experience working with top-10 Division I and Division II teams, Olympic Trials qualifiers, Senior/Junior National qualifiers and NCAA and high school state champions. At West Virginia he has brought energy and charisma while working closely with the swimmers. Dennis also is responsible for the 2008-09 recruiting classes that found the men ranked at 17th and the women at 24th. As a coach at the collegiate level, Dennis has developed more than 90 percent of lifetime swims for the teams themselves and has devised seasonal plans that have developed more than 200 personal records, 77 team records and 41 All-Americans. Before coming to West Virginia, Dennis had a two-year stint at California-San Diego, where he served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. Prior to his stay at UC-San Diego, Dennis spent three years at Princeton, where he was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. It was there that Dennis revitalized the Princeton strength and conditioning program while maintaining undefeated seasons from 2002-04, and increasing the recruiting class size. From 2000-02, Dennis worked as a graduate assistant at Michigan while working toward his master’s. He worked under world-

Dennis put together a stellar career at Western Illinois where he was part of a six-time conference champion program. He swam the 100 back, 200 back, 100 fly, 1000 free, 400 IM and also dove two seasons. A native of Peoria, Ill., Dennis has stayed in touch with his roots as he runs the Peoria Swim Lab each summer. The week-long camp is aimed at helping middle school to high school athletes who are looking to further their swimming abilities. Dennis graduated from Western Illinois in 2000 with a degree in exercise science and kine-siology. He later went on to receive his master’s from Michigan in 2002 in exercise science and kinesiology. Dennis earned his Level 4 coaching certificate from the American Swimming Coaches Association in 2005. Dennis and his wife, Hillary, reside in Morgantown.

Kyle Gallo Assistant Coach Sixth Season

Kyle Gallo is in his sixth season with the Mountaineers and fifth as an assistant coach. Gallo assists coach Vic Riggs with the middistance, distance and stroke swimming, while also overseeing day-to-day operations, recruiting and academics. Gallo played a key part in sending eight swimmers, the most ever sent by WVU, to the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials this past summer in Omaha, Neb. The Mountaineers were represented in 15 different events during the Trials. The 2011-12 season was WVU’s most productive under the current coaching staff as the women placed 26th at the 2012 NCAA Championships. Under Gallo’s watch, 53 WVU records, 18 pool records and 13 Big East Championships records have been broken. In total, Gallo has coached one NCAA AllAmerican and 14 NCAA All-America Honorable Mentions. Kevin Donohue became the swimming program’s first-ever individual All-American with his fifth-place finish in the 100 breast at the 2008 NCAA Championships. Gallo also coached Jared Goldthorpe to a 10th-place finish in the 200 back at the 2011 NCAA Championships and Michael Walker to an 11th-place finish in the 400 IM. Burnett, Kayla Andrews, Morgan Callaway and Shaunna Purtell earned Honorable Mention All-American status with their 15th-place finish in the 400 free relay at the 2010 NCAA Championships. Gallo has most notably helped the team in the classroom, as both the men’s and women’s teams were named to the Collegiate Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) All-Academic Team during the 2011-12 terms. The Sterling, Va., native has been coaching all ability levels and age groups for 13 years. He is a former coach for Mountaineer Aquatic Club and is now currently the co-head coach for West Virginia Aquatics. Gallo also spent one year as an assistant coach at University High in Morgantown after graduating from WVU in 2006 with a degree in physical education and health education teaching, and a minor in athletic coaching. In the summer of 2009, Gallo received his master’s in physical education. Gallo was a four-year swimmer and 2005 captain of the WVU swim team, where he competed in the sprint free events. He also is a multiple Big East Championships qualifier.

Men’s Season Preview WVU to rely heavily on freshmen class A mixture of experience and youth will play a heavy part in the success of the 2012-13 West Virginia University men’s swimming and diving team. The Mountaineers return 13 members from last year’s squad that finished fourth at the Big East Championships, while there will be 15 newcomers on squad. Freestyle Key returners for the freestyle group include senior Hugh Simmonds (200 free, 500 free), sophomore Nathan Cobbe (200 free, 500 free), Daeton Davenport (500 free, 1650 free). Simmonds will likely lead the group after finishing eighth in the 200 free and 13th in the 500 free at the Big East Championships last season. Davenport capped his freshman season with a sixth place finish in the 1650 free at the conference championships, while Cobbe finished fourth in the 200 free.

Newcomers Ross Glegg, Wali Toulson and Julian Vialette will all score points for WVU in the 50 free and 100 free. Glegg and Vialette both have experienced international careers and Toulson was the top sprinter in Palm Beach County.

Individual Medley Williams will be the main contributor in the individual medley events after taking fourth in the 200 IM at the Virginia Short Course Championships.

Backstroke Sophomore David Palley is the lone backstroke returner after taking 12th in the 200 back at the Big East Championships last season. Freshmen Jay Hickey and Andrew Marsh will provide depth in each event. Hickey finished 10th in the 100 back at last year’s Ohio state championships, while Marsh finished third in the 100 back at the New York state championships.

Diving The diving squad continues to get bigger and returns NCAA Zone qualifier, junior Richard Pokorny. Pokorny finished third on the 1-meter board and 11th on the 3-meter board at last season’s Big East Championships. Also returning is junior Liam McLaughlin, who sat out last season with an injury, while incoming freshmen include Keith Carmichael, Ibrahim Ismail and Christian Parker.

Butterfly Marsh will also swim the fly events as he was a New York state champion in the 100 fly, while fellow freshman Chase Williams finished 10th in the 100 fly and 12th in the 200 fly at the Virginia Short Course Championships. Breast After finishing 17th in the 200 breast and 18th in the 100 breast at the Big East Championships, sophomore Christopher Brill will lead the breaststroke group. Freshman Aidan Fumagalli will play a vital role as well after finishing second in the 100 breast at the Texas state championships last season.

Women’s Season Preview WVU senior class to provide leadership The women’s side will use a deep, accoladeladen senior class to lead a group of 11 newcomers into the Big 12 for the 2012-13 season. Last season, senior Rachael Burnett was named the Big East Women’s Most Outstanding Swimmer for the second-consecutive season as the women took third place at the championships. Freestyle The 50 free and 100 will continue to be led by junior Eva Burlingham, while freshman Jaimee Gillmore will joins the squad after finishing 13th in the 50 free and 18th in the 100 free at last season’s Florida state championships. The mid-distance and distance freestyle events continue to have the most depth and are anchored by Burnett, the 200 free, 500 free and 1650 free Big East champion. Senior Kata Fodor will follow closely after earning fourth in the 500 free and 1650 free at the Big East Championships. Senior Mandie Nugent and junior Danielle Smith also are top returners with Nugent taking second in the 500 free at the Big East Championships and Smith finishing ninth in the 500 free.

Backstroke Smith will also be a key contributor in the 100 back and 200 back at all levels as she finished second in the 100 back and third in the 200 back at the conference meet last season. Senior Nikki Vetterlein returns after taking ninth in the 200 back at BIG EASTs last year, while West Virginia state champion Courtney Miller will make an immediate impact. Butterfly Nugent is a three-time Big East Champion in the 200 fly and won the 100 fly last season, setting conference records in both events. Sophomore Julie Ogden had a breakout season that came to a close with a second-place finish behind Nugent in the 100 fly. Also expected to contribute is freshmen Natalie Johnsen and Kelsey Frantz. Breast After finishing seventh in the 200 breast and 12th in the 100 breast at the Big East Championships last season, senior Breanna McCann will lead the group of breaststrokers. Also expected to contribute is sophomore Jenelle Zee and freshman Morgan Emter. Zee finished 10th in the 100 breast at the Big East Championships.

2011-12 Season Review WVU competes in eight events at NCAAs Record Breaking Season Nine WVU records, four Big East records and three pool records were broken in 2011-12, and there were a total of 126 lifetime-best swims. Thirty-two NCAA A & B cuts standards also were eclipsed in 2011-12. NCAA Honorable Mention All-Americans The 800 free relay team of Rachael Burnett, Kata Fodor, Mandie Nugent and Danielle Smith finished 16th at the NCAA Championships, earning Honorable Mention All-America honors. Burnett also was an Honorable Mention AllAmerican in the 500 free and 1650 free, while Nugent earned the honor in the 200 fly. Riggs Named Coach of the Year Coach Vic Riggs was named the 2012 Big East Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year after leading the team to a third-place finish at the Big East Championships in Pittsburgh, Pa. Riggs led the women’s squad to a win in the 800 free relay, along with individual victories in the 200 free, 500 free, 1650 free, 100 fly and 200 fly.

Rachael Burnett Burnett Earns Second-Consecutive Award Rachael Burnett was named the 2012 Big East Women’s Most Outstanding Swimmer for the second consecutive season with victories in the 200 free (1:46.23), 500 free (4:39.63), 1650 free (16:13.94) and 800 free relay (7:06.87). Burnett’s time in the 500 free and 800 free relay were new Big East and pool records, while her finish in the 1650 free was a new Big East record. Diving Shines at Zones Richard Pokorny and Haily VandePoel represented the divers at the 2012 NCAA Zone “A” Diving Championships. Pokorny took 29th place on the 1-meter (247.00), while placing 31st on the 3-meter (245.70). VandePoel finished in 31st on the 1-meter (210.95), and 14th place on the 3-meter (264.00). Both Squads Earn Academic Honor Both the men’s and women’s squads were named CSCAA Scholar All-American teams, with the men posting a 3.08 GPA and the women a 3.19 GPA.

During his third appearance at the NCAA Championships, Hyser became WVUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first male All-America swimmer, placing 10th for honorable mention state in the 100-yard butterfly at the NCAA finals in Indianapolis. The Mountaineer team captain and five-time school record holder posted a time of 48.29 in the 100 fly to attain his honorable mention KREG LEWIS 1986 Towson, Md. A transfer from national champion Florida, Lewis brought honorable mention All-America honors to WVU in 1986 with his ninth-place finish in the 100 fly at the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis. Earning his award with a time of 47.48, the sophomore helped WVU capture the Eastern team title earlier that year. NICK DELIC 2006, 2007 Split, Croatia

Nick Delic had a productive 2007 NCAA Championships, earning his first All-America honors as a member of the seventh-place 200 free relay squad. He also earned honorable mention All-America honors, contributing to the 11th-place 400 free relay team, the 16th-place 200 medley team and the 16th-place 400 medley team. Just a year earlier, Delic earned honorable mention All-America honors in the 100 breast with his 13th-place finish at the 2006 NCAA Championships in Atlanta. His second distinction as honorable mention All-America came as a member of the 200 free relay that placed 13th. As only a junior, Delic owned eight school records, three Natatorium records and three BIG EAST records in both individual and relay events.

After transferring from national champion Auburn, Hagedorn became a honorable mention All-American in 2006 as a member of the 200 free relay that finished 13th at the NCAA Championships in Atlanta. At the 2006 BIG EAST Championships, Hagedorn captured six BIG EAST titles and set two championship records on his way to being named BIG EAST Swimmer of the Year, a first in West Virginia history. ANDREW LANGENFELD 2006, 2007 Centralia, Ill. Langenfeld returned to the NCAA Championships stage in 2007, this time bringing home All-America honors as a member of the seventhplace 200 free relay squad. The sophomore also earned three honorable mention All-America honors with the 11th-place 400 free relay, the 16th-place 200 medley relay and the 16th-place 400 medley relay teams. Langenfeld made his first championship appearance at the 2006 NCAA Championships in Atlanta as a true freshman. Earning honorable mention All-America honors as a member of the 200 free relay that finished 13th, Langenfeld also competed in the 50 free, 100 fly and 400 free relay. PABLO MARMOLEJO 2006, 2007 Mexico City, Mexico A versatile swimmer with many proven strokes, Pablo Marmolejo made his second straight

appareance at the NCAA Championships in 2007, traveling to Minneapolis, Minn., and earning honorable mention All-America honors with his 16th-place finish in the 200 fly. Marmolejo first took home honorable mention All-America honors in the 200 fly with his 13th-place finish at the 2006 NCAA Championships in Atlanta.

A staple of the Mountaineer relay teams, Williams garnered honorable mention AllAmerica honors as a member of the 200 free relay that finished 13th at the 2006 NCAA Championships in Atlanta. The junior was making his first NCAA appearance.

TONY CISNEROS 2007 Garden Grove, Calif. A fast swimmer with a ferocious free stroke, Cisneros made his first appearance at the NCAA Championships in 2007 as a sophomore and earned honorable mention All-America honors as a member of the 11thplace 400 free relay squad. Cisneros set two school records and one BIG EAST record while at WVU. KEVIN DONOHUE 2007 Wakefield, R.I. After spending a year at Northwestern and Rhode Island, Donohue transferred to WVU in 2006 and quickly found his groove with the team. He became the first-ever menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s swimmer at WVU to earn All-America honors in an individual event for his fifth place showing in the 100 breast at the 2008 NCAA Championships. At the 2008 BIG EAST Championships, he captured two first-place finishes in the 100 and 200 breast events. Both were automatic qualifying times to the NCAA Championships as well as school and meet records. In only his first season, Donohue competed in the 2007 NCAA Championships, contributing to the 16th place finish of the 200 medley relay team and earning honorable mention All-America honors. Donohue also won the 100 breast at the 2007 BIG EAST Championships. At the end of his career, Donohue owned two conference championships records, two school records and one Natatorium record.

After just three months of competition as a Mountaineer, Tolic earned All-America honors as a true freshman, contributing to the seventh-place 200 free relay team at the 2007 NCAA Championships. A brilliant backstroker, Tolic also earned honorable mention All-America honors leading off the 16th-place 200 medley relay team and the 16th-place 400 medley relay team. Tolic set three school records in his career at WVU. MICHAEL WALKER 2009 Bridgeport, W.Va. Walker earned honorable mention All-America honors in the 400 IM with an 11th-place finish in his first career NCAA Championships. Walker finished the race in a time of 3:44.89, a new school record. Walker joined Chris Hagedorn as the only other native West Virginia WVU swimmer to earn All-America status. The four-time BIG EAST qualifier won the 400 IM at the BIG EAST Championships in 2008 and 2009, both school and meet records. Walker is considered one of the most decorated Mountaineer swimmers of all time. JARED GOLDTHORPE 2011 New South Wales, Australia After competing in the NCAA Division I Menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Swimming and Diving Championships, Goldthorpe was named an honorable mention AllAmerican for his 10th-place finish in the 200 back. At a record setting pace of 1:42.17, Goldthorpe set a school record and became the first male swimmer at WVU since 2009 to earn All-America status.

ZOLTAN POVAZSAY 2007 Dunakeszi, Hungary Povazsay stormed on to the collegiate swimming scene his freshman year at WVU, winning 29 events throughout the course of the season. Povazsay took to the 2007 NCAA Championships pool as a true freshman and earned All-America honors with the seventhplace 200 free relay team. He also earned honorable mention All-America honors with the 11th-place 400 free relay squad and the 16th-place 400 medley relay squad. Just three weeks earlier, Povazsay won six events at the BIG EAST Championships, garnering BIG EAST Male Swimmer of the Year honors, only the second Mountaineer ever to do so. After only one year at WVU, Povazsay owned six school records and one conference record.

Rachael Burnett 2010, 2012 Springfield, Va.

AILEEN CONVERY 1988,89 Dublin, Ireland Convery earned honorable mention All-America honors in the 200 back with her 16th-place finish at the 1989 NCAA meet at Indianapolis. The former WVU and Eastern record-holder in the 200 back, Convery, also an Academic All-American, was a member of several record-setting WVU relay teams and finished 18th in her event at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul as a member of the Irish Olympic team. She repeated as a honorable mention All-American with a 15th-place finish in the 1990 NCAA meet at Texas. KIM KAUFMAN 1984-85-86 Belpre, Ohio A three-time honorable mention All-American, Kaufman earned her honors despite swimming two years with a torn rotator cuff. The first WVU female student-athlete to earn All-America status in an NCAA sport, Kaufman finished 12th as a sophomore in the 100 yard backstroke, 13th as a junior and 12th as a senior in the 100 back in a WVU record time of 57.35. She was the first WVU swimmer ever to earn four trips to the NCAA Championships. Kaufman was inducted into the WVU Sports Hall of Fame in 1999, becoming only the second woman to be inducted.

Burnett has been awarded Honorable Mention AllAmerica status four times during her dominating career with the Mountaineers. In her rookie campaign, Burnett shattered multiple WVU school records and was on the 400 free relay team that placed 15th at the 2010 NCAA Championships for Honorable Mention All-America honors. During the 2012 NCAA Championships, Burnett placed 11th in the 1650, 14th in the 500 free and was a member of the 16th place 800 free relay team to be named Honorable Mention All-America three times. Burnett currently holds five individual school records and three relay records. MORGAN CALLAWAY 2010 Coatesville, Pa. Callaway developed into arguably one of the best swimmer to ever come through the West Virginia program as a four-year NCAA qualifier. Callaway was a member of the 15th-place 400 free relay team that earned honorable mention All-America honors at the 2010 NCAA Championships. The swim was the final of Callaway’s prolific career. Callaway was the 2009 BIG EAST Swimmer of the Year.

RENEE RICCIO 1991-92 Altoona, Pa. Riccio was an honorable mention All-American in the 100 fly in 1991 and in the 100 fly and 200 fly in 1992. One of the nation’s top butterfliers, Riccio earned a berth to the 1992 U.S. Olympic Trials. A recordholder in the 100 fly and 200 fly and a team recordholder in the 200 IM and 400 IM, she also held two Eastern records in the 200 IM and 100 fly. DEBBIE SCOTT 1985 Pittsburgh, Pa. A Mountaineer captain, Scott earned honorable mention All-America status with a ninth-place finish in the 50 free at the NCAA Championships at Alabama. Swimming her specialty in a time of 23.51, the senior was making her first appearance at the NCAA Championships. KAYLA ANDREWS 2010 Newark, Del. Arguably one of the best sprint swimmer in WVU history, Andrews had an outstanding four-year career in which she set the school records in the 50 free and 100 free. Andrews was a multiple BIG EAST champion and four-year NCAA qualifier. Andrews was a member of the 15th-place 400 free relay team that earned honorable mention All-America honors at the 2010 NCAA Championships.

SHAUNNA PURTELL 2010 The Woodlands, Texas One of the most improved swimmers to ever come through the program, Purtell garnered honorable mention All-America honors as a member of the 400 free relay team that finished 15th at the 2010 NCAA Championships. Purtell was making her first-ever appearance at the championships and the swim was the final of her career. Kata Fodor 2012 Sarasota, Fla. In her first trip the NCAA Championships in 2012, Fodor earned Honorable Mention All-America status as a member of the 16th place 800 free relay squad. Fodor also swam in the 200 free, finishing 59th overall.

Mandie Nugent 2012 Greater Manchester, England The 2012 NCAA Championships were Nugent’s third trip to the championships and she recorded two Honorable Mention All-America swims. She was a member of the 800 free relay team that finished in 16th place, while also placing ninth in the 200 fly and winning the consolation finals. Danielle Smith 2012 Delray Beach, Fla. Smith earned Honorable Mention All-America status as a member of the 16th place 800 free relay at the 2012 NCAA Championships. It was the first time Smith has qualified for the championships and she swam in the 100 back and 200 back events individually.

James P. Clements, Ph.D. President Jim Clements is West Virginia University’s 23rd president. WVU is the flagship university of West Virginia, with an internationally diverse student body of more than 33,000 undergraduate and graduate students across approximately 200 degree programs in the University’s 13 constituent colleges, two divisional colleges, and multiple healthcare sites. Dr. Clements chairs the boards of the West Virginia United Health System, the WVU Hospitals, and the WVU Research Corporation. In total, WVU and its affiliates represent a $2.3 billion enterprise and employ more than 18,000 people. WVU and its affiliates are currently in the midst of more than $600 million of capital improvements. Regionally, he is a board member of the National Energy Technology Laboratory Regional University Alliance. He chairs the Implementation Committee of the Power of

32, a visioning initiative across 32 counties in Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. In the state, he recently co-chaired the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission’s Diversity Initiative Council, and co-chaired the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission’s College Completion Task Force. In addition, he serves on the board of the West Virginia Business Roundtable. On a national level, he is active with national higher education organizations such as the Association of Public Land-Grant Universities (APLU) and the American Council on Education (ACE). He is currently co-chair of the APLU Energy Forum and is the chair of the ACE Commission on Leadership. Dr. Clements was the only university president selected to join a 15-member Innovation Advisory Board to the U.S. Department of Commerce. He was also nominated and participated in the 81st Joint Civilian Orientation Conference through the U.S. Department of Defense. Before coming to WVU, Dr. Clements served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Towson University, the secondlargest public university in Maryland. Prior to becoming provost, he served as Towson’s vice president for economic and community

outreach, and as the Robert W. Deutsch Distinguished Professor and chair of the Department of Computer and Information Sciences. Dr. Clements earned a B.S. in computer science and an M.S. and Ph.D. in operations analysis from the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), as well as an M.S. in computer science from Johns Hopkins University. The fourth edition of his project management textbook was published in four languages and used in multiple countries; the fifth edition was released in spring 2012. At WVU, Dr. Clements is a tenured professor in the Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources’ Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. He is married to Beth Clements, and they have four children – Tyler, twin daughters Hannah and Maggie, and Grace.

Oliver Luck Director of Athletics Successful at each of his previous career stops, Oliver Luck continues that streak at West Virginia University. A former Mountaineer quarterback, Luck, appointed the University’s 11th Director of Athletics by President James P. Clements on June 9, 2010, has made significant strides in his first two years to enhance WVU’s role as a major player in the collegiate world. In his first year, Luck hired four head coaches, while maintaining WVU’s superior level of success. In addition to new hires, Luck oversaw the progress of major capital projects, such as the $25 million WVU basketball practice facility for men’s and women’s basketball and the women’s soccer training complex. He also fostered an atmosphere for achievement and triumph in the classroom and on the field. In year two, Luck led WVU into the Big 12 Conference, oversaw the best fundraising year in school history, implemented several safety and crowd enhancements at Mountaineer sporting events, increased overall department revenue, continued a master plan for facility upgrades and watched his football program gain its third BCS bowl victory with a recordsetting 70-33 win in the Orange Bowl. Luck’s athletic and professional career has been the epitome of success, first as a recordsetting quarterback for the Mountaineers from 1978-81, then as a professional quarterback for the National Football League’s Houston Oilers, and later as a professional sports executive. Luck’s journey to the big chair at WVU began in his native Cleveland, where in 1977 he was named the Cleveland Touchdown Club Player of the Year at St. Ignatius High. Luck chose WVU over Ivy League schools Harvard and Yale, embarking upon a career that saw him establish school records for touchdown passes and completions during his playing days, while also leading the Mountaineers to a 26-6 upset victory over Florida in the 1981 Peach Bowl. His best season came as a senior in 1981 when he completed 216 of 394 passes for 2,448 yards and 16 touchdowns. He passed for a career-high 360 yards in a 27-24 loss to Syracuse at the Carrier Dome in the final regular-season game of his career. Luck ended his college career with 5,765 yards and 43 touchdown passes, both figures still ranking among the best in school history. Luck was a two-time team MVP in 1980 and

Oliver Luck was a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American quarterback at WVU. 1981, and also received the Louis D. Meisel Award for the WVU football student-athlete with the highest grade point average. The two-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American was the recipient of Today’s Top Five, presented for scholastics by the NCAA and was selected by the National Football Foundation as one of its 10 scholar-athletes to make a keynote speech at its annual banquet in 1982. Selected in the second round of the NFL draft by the Houston Oilers (44th overall pick), Luck spent four years with the Oilers from 1982-86. His most extended action came in 1983 when he started six games and finished the season completing 124-of-217 passes for 1,375 yards and eight touchdowns. After retiring from football, Luck became vice president of business development for the NFL and later was appointed general manager of the Frankfurt Galaxy of the newly created World League of American Football. He spent the ’95 season as general manager of the Rhein Fire before being named President and CEO of NFL Europe in 1996. Luck totaled more than 10 years with the NFL, before becoming chief executive officer of the Harris CountyHouston Sports Authority in 2001. In that role, Luck oversaw the development and management of a $1 billion professional sports and entertainment complex for the city of Houston that included Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros, Reliant Stadium, home of the Houston Texans, the Toyota Center, home of the Houston Rockets, Comets and Aeros and the Livestock Show and Rodeo. In 2005, Luck was appointed as the first president of Major League Soccer’s Houston Dynamos, helping that organization to a pair

of MLS Cup titles in his first two years at the helm. Luck secured the funding for an $80 million soccer complex to house the Dynamos when the call came to return to his alma mater. BBVA Compass Stadium was built and opened in 2012 adding to Luck’s legacy with the professional soccer team, and the overall Houston sports facility complexes. He returned in May, 2012 for the opening ceremony of the soccer stadium that he fought so hard for. Prior to his current position at WVU, Luck was appointed by then Gov. Joe Manchin in 2008 to a four-year term on the West Virginia University Board of Governors, a spot he relinquished to become director of athletics. The Rhodes Scholar finalist graduated Phi Betta Kappa from WVU in 1982. He also earned a law degree from Texas, graduating cum laude in 1987. In 1997, Luck was inducted into the West Virginia University Sports Hall of Fame, and in 2008, he was inducted into the CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Fame. ”It’s an incredible honor for me to be the athletic director at my alma mater,” said Luck. ”I care deeply about this school, and WVU is truly one of the outstanding land-grant universities in the country. I am so pleased to be a part of the leadership team assembled under President Clements at a dynamic and strategic time in its history.” He is married to the former Kathy Wilson. They have two sons and two daughters: Andrew, a former All-American quarterback and two-time Heisman Trophy finalist at Stanford and No. 1 overall pick of the 2012 NFL draft by the Indianapolis Colts; Mary Ellen, a junior volleyball player at Stanford; Emily, a freshman at Stanford and Addison, who attends Morgantown High.

Directions to the WVU Natatorium From I-68 Take the Pierpont Road (mile marker 7) exit and follow signs toward the football stadium by heading West onto WV 857. At second traffic light, turn left (south) on US 119. Drive up a steep hill; the Morgantown airport will be on your left. Continue straight past several car dealerships and at the second light turn right onto WV 705. Turn left at the sixth traffic light onto Van Voorhis Road. The road becomes Patteson Drive when crossing University Avenue. Proceed up Patteson to the light at Jerry West Boulevard. Go straight at the light into the Coliseum parking lots. Turn right on to Gale Catlett Drive and the Natatorium will be on your right a few hundred feet ahead.

From I-79 Take the Star City/WVU (mile marker 155) exit and follow signs to West Virginia University, heading south on US 19 and across the Star City Bridge. Proceed up Monongahela Boulevard past Texas Roadhouse. The Natatorium will be on your right a few hundred feet ahead.
