SPOTLIGHT Choosing to become a Mountaineer is special. Without a professional sports team in the state, folks across the state and throughout the region love West Virginia University athletics. No school helps its student-athletes more than the people at WVU. The West Virginia University rowing team works hard on the water to ensure that it represents the Old Gold and Blue in the best manner possible in competition. But it also works hard to give back to those who make Morgantown and the surrounding region a kind-hearted and good-natured community. This year, the team volunteered as the setup crew while fundraising for the Making Strides for Breast Cancer event that was held at the Hazel Ruby McQuain Park Amphitheatre in October. The event serves as a celebration of survivorship, an occasion to express hope, and a shared goal to end a disease that threatens the lives of so many.

Previously, the team has helped make the community a better place by helping with roadside clean-up, improving local watersheds and volunteering at senior centers. They also aided the Haiti relief fund through the West Virginia Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, which held a benefit after the country was devastated by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake in January 2010. Several team members also volunteer on an individual basis with the local Big Sister program. Additionally, associate head coach Tina Griffith and assistant coach Meg Ayers participated in a clean-up of the Monongahela River in June 2011 when the Army Corps of Engineers needed to do repairs on the lock and dam. “The residents of Morgantown and the surrounding areas are great supporters of Mountaineer athletics and we all continually reap the benefits of that support,” King says. “As members of such a privileged group, being active in the community is a way we can give back and show our appreciation.”

The Monongahela River, commonly referred to as “the Mon”, provides an idyllic rowing venue for the Mountaineers. A series of locks and dams along the Mon create a pooling effect so that a minimum navigable depth of nine feet is maintained year-round.

In the spring of 2009, West Virginia University served host to its first-ever spring regatta on the Mon, featuring Dayton, Duquense and George Mason. The race ended at the Edith Barill Riverfront Park in nearby Star City. The Mountaineers will host two scrimmages, one in the fall against Duquense and a second in the spring against George Mason, on the Mon in the 2013-14 season. The name Monongahela is derived from a Native American term loosely meaning “river of falling banks” and/or “river of high bluffs”. True to its name, the Mon flows well below its banks and is largely sheltered from prevailing winds by the surrounding bluffs. As such, the West Virginia University crews are often fortunate to train on calm water with little current.

CONDITIONING Athletic excellence and strength and conditioning go hand-in-hand at West Virginia University. WVUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s strength and conditioning staff ensures all student-athletes are on year-long programs designed to continue improving the fitness capabilities needed in their sports. To keep athletes improving and in peak physical condition, West Virginia offers a variety of training areas and an array of strength programs designed to increase performance. All student-athletes will also have their own program individually calculated and updated throughout the year. At West Virginia, student-athletes can rest assured that their strength staff is monitoring their performance on a daily basis. Equipped with excellent amenities and staffed by some of the finest strength coaches in the nation, athletes who come to West Virginia know that they are in good hands when it comes to their athletic capacity.

TRAINING The West Virginia athletic training program looks to get its student-athletes back on the water in a timely manner while providing quality health care for its student-athletes and coaches. The scope of the athletic training services encompass various domains, which include injury recognition, treatment, rehabilitation, prevention, education and counseling that will enable the athlete to maintain optimal quality of life beyond the span of athletic competition. Multiple athletic training rooms are available for student-athlete furnished with the latest technology and equipment. The athletic training staff will work in conjunction with the team physicians and athletic administration to assure the student-athletes receive quality care throughout their career at WVU.

Now in its 17th year of existence, the Big 12 Conference is a model of stability, strength and success that is backed by institutions that value quality academic and athletic programs, as well as a great tradition of success. The Big 12 is an NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics conference that encompasses five states with over 37 million people within its geographic footprint. More than 4,100 student-athletes from across the United State and around the World compete annually under the Big 12 banner. Whether on the field, in the classroom or within the community, student-athletes, administrators, coaches and game officials of the Big 12 support the highest ideals in sportsmanship. The Big 12 conducts postseason championships for 20 of its 23 sports, including rowing. In total, five members of the big 12 Conference sponsor collegiate rowing programs- Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Texas and West Virginia. On Sept. 7, 2012, the big 12 announced a 13-year media rights deal with ESPN and Fox Sports Media Rights Group that is sure to maintain the leagueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s elite status. In its first 16 years, the Conference has distributed more than $1.6 billion to its member institutions. The conference office is headquartered in Irving, Texas.

In addition to being a full-fledged member of the Big 12 Conference, the West Virginia University rowing program is also an affiliate member of Conference USA. The reason for this affiliation is

the NCAAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new automatic qualification system that was implemented in the 2013 season. Eleven teams will be selected via automatic qualifier as conference champions and 11 teams will be selected at-large by a selection committee for participation in the NCAA Championship. In order to earn an automatic qualification designation, a conference must have a minimum of six rowing schools. The five big 12 schools (Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Texas and West Virginia), along with two SEC rowing schools (Alabama and Tennessee), are affiliated with the three Conference UISA rowing schools (UCF, SMU and Tulsa). Additionally, Old Dominion officially joined Conference USA on July 1, 2013.

In the town of Henley, rowing is the premier sport and is the center of the town’ attention. The regatta began in 1839 and has been held each year since, except during the World Wars. It started as an afternoon event, but is now held over the course of five days with more than 500 teams competing in 17 events. Because the Henley began before either the England Rowing Association or the International Rowing Federation were created, the royal Regatta features a longer course and a different style of racing. The women’s course is one mile and 550 yards, which is slightly longer than the distance of 2,000 meter that the team was familiar rowing. The women only races on tea at a time, with the winner advancing to the next round.

THE BOAT:

Bow: The forward section of the boat and the first part of the boat to cross the finish line. Also the person in the seat closest to the bow. Bow coxed Boat: A shell in which the coxswain is near the bow instead of the stern. It’s hard to see the coxswain in this type of boat, because only her head is visible. Having the coxswain virtually lying down in the bow reduces wind resistance, and weight distribution is better. Button: A wide collar on the oar that keeps it from slipping through the oarlock.

Coxswain: Person who steers the shell and is the onthe-water coach for the crew.

Deck: The part of the shell at the bow and stern that is covered with fiberglass cloth or a thin plastic.

Ergometer: Rowers call it an “erg.” It’s a rowing machine that closely approximates the actual rowing motion and allows the rower to measure her “strokes per minute” and the distance covered. Gate: The bar across the oarlock that keeps the oar in place.

Lightweight: Refers to the rowers, not the boats; there is a maximum weight for each rower in a lightweight event as well as a boat average. Oar: Used to drive the boat forward

Port: Left side of the boat, while facing forward, in the direction of the movement. Power 10: A call for rowers to do 10 of their best, most powerful strokes. It’s a strategy used to pull ahead of a competitor.

Repechage: The second-chance race which ensures that everyone has two chances to advance from preliminary races since there is no seeding in the heats. Rigger: The triangular shaped metal device that is bolted onto the side of the boat and holds the oars.

Run: The run is the distance the shell moves during one stroke. You can figure it by looking for the distance between the puddles made by the same oar. Shell: Can be used interchangeably with boat.

Slide: The set of runners for the wheels of each seat in the boat.

Starboard: Right side of the boat, while facing forward, in the direction of movement. Stern: The rear of the boat; the direction the rowers are facing.

Stretcher or Footstretcher: Where the rower’s feet go. The stretcher consists of two inclined footrests that hold the rower’s shoes. The rower’s shoes are bolted into the footrests.

Stroke: The rower who sits closest to the stern. The stroke sets the rhythm for the boat; others behind her must follow her cadence. StrokeCoach: A small electronic display that rowers attach in the boat to show the important race information like stroke rate and elapsed time. Swing: The hard-to-define feeling when near-perfect synchronization of motion occurs in the shell, enhancing the performance and speed.

THE STROKE:

Catch: The point, at the end of the recovery, when the blade is placed into the water for the beginning of the next stroke. Drive: The part of the stroke when the blade is in the water and the rower is pulling on the handle/pressing with the legs. Recovery: The time between the release and the catch, when the oar is not in the water.

Feather: To gradually turn the blade so that it goes from parallel to the water to perpendicular (square) with the water just before the catch.

COXSWAIN COMMANDS:

Back-it: Means to have the rowers place their blades at the release position, squared, and push the oar handle toward the stern of the boat. This motion causes the shell to move backwards. Blades-down: This command is used to tell the rowers to place their blades back on the water.

Check-it-down: Tells the crew to square their blades and drag them across the surface to the water. Used to slow and stop the shell quickly. Ease-up, Firm-up: These commands tell the rowers to reduce the pressure on the oar, or apply more pressure as needed. Heads, ready, up: Tells the rowers to press the boat above their heads.

Hold-Water: Tells the rowers to stop rowing and square their blades immediately; dragging them across the surface of the water to slow and stop the boat quickly! Let-it-run: This tells the rowers to stop rowing.

Paddle: This tells a crew to row with just enough pressure to move the boat. Roll-it: Tells the crew to flip the boat over, together, from heads. Way-enough: Tells the rowers to stop rowing. The synonym is “let it run.”

West Virginia University offers a variety of services and programs to help student-athletes maximize their academic potential. Department staff members work with coaches, on campus student service providers and faculty to help student-athletes meet the unique demands of the classroom, the sporting arena and the personal-social challenges they face as developing adults. While many of the headlines center on the Mountaineersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; accomplishments on the playing field, West Virginia athletes have also made some noteworthy strides in the classroom. Some of those strides include a string of 10 consecutive years where the department has had at least one first team Academic All-American. To help its student athletes achieve academic success, one of the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s finest facilities resides in the WVU Coliseum â&#x20AC;&#x201C; The Athletic Academic Performance Center. The 8,000-square foot facility provides individual and group study areas, a plethora of computer stations and the latest in fingerprint technology used when signing in. A total of 340 student-athletes were recognized for their achievement in the classroom last spring, at the annual WVU Student-Athlete Academic Excellence Banquet, honoring recipients of the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll. Implemented in 1989, the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll was created to recognize students who have achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or better. Since the program began in 1989, nearly 4,000 student-athletes have earned a place on the honor roll. Ford retired in 2011 after 44 years of service with the WVU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.

West Virginia University’s graduation rate for student-athletes has been impressive, to say the least, over the past eight years. The ratio of student-athletes graduating to the general student body has increased almost every year. The West Virginia University women’s cross country team, men’s basketball team and women’s soccer team received public recognition in the spring of 2010 by the NCAA for their latest multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores. These teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport. The women’s cross country team was one of seven Mountaineer teams to earn a perfect APR score in 2011-12 alone. The APR provides a real-time look at a team’s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team’s academic performance. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) provides a forum for the “voice of the student-athlete” on WVU’s campus. SAAC membership provides feedback to administration about how to better WVU athletic programs. They offer input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes’ lives on NCAA member institution campuses.

JIMMY KING Head Coach Sixth Season | Bucknell ‘90

Jimmy King enters his sixth season at the helm of the West Virginia University rowing program. King has made tremendous strides with the team since taking over leadership responsibility during 2007-08. Each season has seen steady improvement since then, with one of the most successful seasons coming this past racing year. The 2012-13 season began at the Oak ridge Cardinal Invitational on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The Mountaineers, under King’s tutelage, secured a third-place finish in the varsity 8+ “A” race, and second and first place honors in the “B” and “C” heats, respectively. A week later, the varsity 8+ crew secured a first place finish against Alabama and UCF, with a time of 7:41.5. In mid-April at the Knecht Cup, WVU tallied two more top-10 finishes out of 34 crews in the varsity 8+, with the Mountaineers top-boat finishing in fifth with a mark of 6:49.14. Come championship season, WVU amassed 75 points for a fourth-place finish at the Big 12 Championships in Kansas City, Kan. The varsity 8 crew continued its strong season, posting a third place finish, and boasting two All-Big 12 selections. The Mountaineers season ended at the Conference USA Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn., where WVU finished in sixth place, just one point behind Kansas. During the 2011-12 season, King guided multiple crews to top-10 finishes, as well as medal finishes, during the fall and spring seasons. At the fall season opening Head of the Ohio Regatta, four medals were earned, including first-place finishes by the Varsity 8+ and 4+ crews. At the Head of the Kanawha, King guided two shells to first-place finishes. Additionally, King guided the Varsity 4+ to a top-five finish at the Head of the Schuylkill and three medals at the Frostbite Regatta. During the course of the spring season, King oversaw the advancement of all four crews to the Knecht Cup Regatta Grand Finals for only the fourth time in program history, including two top-10 finishes. In 2010-11, King guided the team to several medals and top 10 finishes in both spring and fall regattas. During the season opening Head of the Ohio Regatta in Pittsburgh, King coached both the Varsity 8+ and one doubles shell to a gold medal, while coaching a second doubles shell to a silver medal. In addition, he led the Mountaineers to top 10 finishes in the Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ events at the prestigious and well-known Head of the Schuylkill the following weekend. Furthermore, he saw the Varsity 4+ ‘A’ crew medal for the third year in a row at the Head of the Occoquan, improving upon past years by taking home silver. Other notable performances included a silver medal finish by the Varsity 8+ at the Occoquan Sprints, a fifth-place finish at the Knecht Cup Regatta (only the second time in program history the Mountaineers have qualified for the Grand Finals) and a sixth-place finish at the Big East Championships (the first time since 2005 the Varsity 8+ has reached the Grand Finals at Big East. King’s success with the team is not limited to the water, as he also stresses the importance of academics. The 2010-11 season saw the emergence of the program’s second All-American, as senior Rachel Viglianco earned the honor twice, being named to the CoSIDA Capital One All-America Women’s at-Large second team, and to the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s All-America team. In addition, five rowers were honored by the CRCA as National Scholar-Athletes, with junior Shannon Gribbons named to the all-Mid Atlantic Region first team. Gribbons became the first rower from WVU to earn this honor. The 2009-10 season served as the foundation for success, as King developed the athletes that would lead the team the following season. Notable results included a third-place finish from the Varsity 8+ at the Head of the Ohio, and a first-place finish at the second annual Head of the Mon in the fall 26

racing season. The spring season brought a first-place finish from the Varsity 8+ at North Carolina, a second-place finish at George Mason, a first-place finish in the petite final at the Big East Championships and a second-place finish in the petite finals at the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship. King was also instrumental in implementing only the second ever Head of the Mon in the spring of 2009, a home regatta for the Mountaineers that included competition from Dayton, Duquesne and George Mason. Additionally, four members of the team were honored as CRCA National Scholar-Athletes. In his first two seasons as head coach, King saw great success with the Varsity 4+. Those years saw the crew place third and second at the Head of the Ohio, respectively, as well as earning a first-place finish at the Head of the Occoquan, a first-place finish at Dayton, a second-place finish at the Knecht Cup and a first-place finish in the petite finals at the Big East Championships. In addition, the Varsity 4+ crew placed fourth at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta. Prior to his time with WVU, King spent the previous 10 years as the assistant rowing coach at Georgetown. There, he was responsible for directing the men’s heavyweight squad, and for the day-to-day running of the women’s heavyweight program. While at Georgetown, King also provided administrative support to the part-time coaches of the women’s lightweight program, having helped institute the lightweight program for the Hoyas in 1999. In 2001, while coaching the heavyweight squad at Georgetown, King served as coach of the U.S. National Team Lightweight Women’s Pair, which won the gold medal at the U.S. Rowing Championships in the Elite 2- and Lightweight 2-, and a silver medal at the FISA World Rowing Championships in the Women’s L2-. Before coaching at Georgetown, King served as coach for the men’s varsity crew squad at George Washington during 1996-97. He also served as the assistant coach and head coach of the men’s and women’s crew teams at Bucknell from 1990-96. King has also served as a coach for the Navy Rowing Camp each year since 2005. A six-day summer camp for girls ages 13-18, the camp places emphasis on technique development and personal improvement. He is a member of the CRCA and the U.S. Rowing Organization, where he is currently certified at level II. He also served as President of the Big East Coaches Association in 2010 and 2011, and previously served as Vice President of the Big East Coaches Association from April 2004-April 2006. King is a 1990 graduate of Bucknell, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology with a concentration in legal studies.

Stacey Van Order came to Morgantown from the University of Delaware, where she had served as the assistant women’s rowing coach since 2011. While with the Blue Hens, she served as the head novice coach, created and executed training plans and coordinated all regatta entries. Van Order also recruited student-athletes and managed the team’s social media outlets. In her only season at Delaware, the Blue Hens finished sixth at the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Championships. The squad placed fifth in the Varsity Fours and Second Varsity Eights, and sixth in the Varsity Eights. Additionally, Rachel Conway was named to the All-CAA Team. Van Order also led the Novice 8+ to a fourth place finish at the Dad Vail Regatta.

Prior to joining the Delaware staff, Van Order worked at the Wyandotte Boat Club, in Wyandotte, Mich., throughout the summer of 2011, and served as the junior women’s coach and the head coach of “Youth Learn to Row.” Her duties included creating and executing training plans for the junior women, coordinating regatta entries for summer racing and running two, two-week sessions of “Youth Learn to Row.” A four-year member (2004-08) of the Eastern Michigan rowing team, Van Order earned the Eagles’ Varsity of the Year Award as a senior. As a graduate assistant for the EMU squad from 2008-11, she served as the recruiting coordinator and coached the novice team. Van Order also conducted try-outs for walk-ons and created and executed workouts. Van Order is a US Rowing Level III certified coach. A native of Battle Creek, Mich., Van Order earned a bachelor’s degree in urban and regional planning from EMU in 2008. She is currently working toward a master’s degree in urban and regional planning from EMU.

Mandy Merritt joins the West Virginia University rowing staff after spending the past two years at Ohio State University as a volunteer assistant coach for the Buckeyes’ rowing team. While a volunteer assistant coach, Merritt oversaw on-campus recruiting and gave instruction on both water and land rowing technique. Merritt also served as a camp instructor for Buckeye Sports Camps, where she gave instruction on proper rowing form. Prior to coaching at OSU, Merritt was a three-time varsity letterwinner for the Buckeyes’ rowing team. She garnered Academic All-Big Ten accolades on three occasions and was the recipient of the Golden Buckeye Award. Merritt served as the team captain and was a member of the Leadership Committee. Merritt graduated from OSU in June 2011 with bachelor degrees in strategic communication and cultural studies.

“Coach Jimmy King and his staff have compiled a schedule that will challenge his rowers, while allowing his team to compete against the nation’s top programs,” says Director of Athletics Oliver Luck. “I look forward to watching our rowers excel throughout this season.” The 2014 schedule features six regattas and a scrimmage in Morgantown on the Monongahela River. The Mountaineers will travel to Tennessee, Indiana, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Oklahoma. “Like most of WVU’s sports, we revamped our schedule last year as we moved into the Big 12 Conference, which resulted in only one hold over event from years past,” says King. “Now in year two, we have a degree of familiarity that will benefit us in travel, pre-race preparations and in knowing our competition.” West Virginia University rowing opens its fall season at the 27th annual Head of Ohio Regatta on Saturday, Oct. 5, on the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh, Pa. “Although early in the season, the Head of the Ohio is a great place for us to kick off our fall racing,” King says. “We’ll have the opportunity to evaluate our team in racing conditions to see where progress has been made, as well as where progress still needs to be made.” The Mountaineers then return to the water at Thomas Eakins Head of the Schuylkill Regatta in Philadelphia on Saturday, Oct. 26. “Competition at the Head of the Schuylkill will be substantially deeper and will be a better gauge of our progress,” Kings says. “While we’re of course concerned about how we’re doing relative to our competitors, at this time of the year, we’re more focused on how we’re progressing within our program.” 48

WVU will take to the water at the Head of the Occoquan in Fairfax, Va., on Saturday, Nov. 2, and at the Collegiate Small Boat Challenge in West Windsor, N.J., on Sunday, Nov. 3. “Our entire team is looking forward to this weekend because it is the only time this fall when our entire team- varsity and novice squads- will compete together representing WVU,” King says. Both the varsity and novice squads will be competing at the Head of the Occoquan on Saturday. “It will be a good test to see how our novice squad has progressed and to let them get a feel for competition,” says assistant coach Mandy Merritt, who is coaching the novice squad. “This, their first race, will be a learning experience and a good marker to

tell me what we need to improve on to get ready for spring and championship racing later in the year.” Last season at the Head of the Occoquan, the Mountaineers earned top-10 finishes in the women’s 4+ and the women’s novice 8+. The Mountaineers will then host Duquesne on Friday, Nov. 8, in Morgantown on the Monongahela for a novice scrimmage. “We are excited to have Duquesne in this week for a novice scrimmage,” Merritt says. “It’s nice to have good competition regionally so close so that we can have races like this to analyze and work on specific things within our crews in the fall. It will also be good for our crews to line up next to a competitor to simulate what spring racing will be like.”

WVU concludes its fall schedule at the Rivanna Romp in Earlysville, Va., on Sunday, Nov. 17. “Racing at the Romp should provide a good assessment of our progress,” King says. “Racing conditions should be benign and the rowers will have their legs under them a bit more going into this weekend’s racing.” WVU is joined in the regatta by the host school, Virginia, along with Oklahoma, Louisville, Old Dominion and Penn. The Cavaliers, Sooners and Cardinals all finished last season in the top 20 of the U.S. Rowing Coaches Poll; UVA claimed the fifth spot.

“Coach (Ted) Nagorsen and I have planned to conduct a scrimmage this weekend instead of the usual 2k race. A scrimmage of multiple pieces with the opportunity to change lineups as we proceed better serves our programs at this early point of the racing season,” King explains. The crews will launch from the WVU Boathouse near the Wharf District at approximately 10 a.m. Both crews will run flights back and forth, starting and ending near the Edith Barill Park. New to the 2014 schedule is the dual against Indiana in Bloomington on April 5.

The Mountaineers open their 2014 spring slate at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational in Oak Ridge, Tenn., on March 15.

From April 12-13, the Mountaineers travel to Mercer Lake in West Windsor, New Jersey, for the Knecht Cup Regatta. The event is hosted by Villanova.

“Regardless of the situation, as always, we’ll try to focus on the things we can affect to find out where we’re starting the 2014 season in relation to some of our primary competitors,” King says. “We look forward to the fantastic racing opportunities we’ll have this weekend, and welcome every challenge presented to us.”

West Virginia returns to Pinchot Lake on April 19 for a double dual hosted by Bucknell University. Four schools will pair off to race two duals. Competing alongside the Mountaineers is Bucknell, George Mason and Temple. West Virginia will first race a dual against Bucknell, and following a short break, will then square off against George Mason.

The season-opening Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational is set for March 15-16 at the Oak Ridge Rowing Course, and will feature crews from Virginia, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Minnesota, Tennessee, Duke, Alabama, Dayton, Kansas and Louisville.

The Big 12 Championships will be hosted on the Oklahoma River in Oklahoma City on May 3. All five of the Big 12 rowing programs also are affiliated with Conference USA for NCAA selection purposes. The Conference USA Championships are on May 17 on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

WVU will then host George Mason for a varsity scrimmage on the Monongahela River on Saturday, March 29, at 11 a.m.

Rowing Competes at Head of the Ohio

The West Virginia University women’s rowing team completed its first regatta of the fall season at the Head of the Ohio in Pittsburgh, Pa. “Compared to last year’s results one might surmise we took a step backward, but just the opposite is true,” said coach Jimmy King. “We took a step forward today in racing two 8+s that finished within eight seconds of each other; a sign that our team depth is improving. There is, of course, disappointment in placing out of the top spots, but today’s performances in the 8+s is a very positive indicator for our program.” The 8+ ‘A’ crew of Karen Verwey, Rachelle Purych, Jessica Hurlbert, Kelly Kramer, Brianna Dendler, Mollie Rosen, Lisa Deklau Hilary Meale and coxswain Ellen Shular crossed the finish line in 15:22.51, earning them a fourth-place finish. The 8+ ‘B’ crew of Enya Messersmith, Tamyra Roberts, Bethany Anne Sapen, Melinda Sharon, Rachel Cokeley, Danielle Widecrantz, Elizabeth Kantak, Mary Ignatiadis and coxswain Mallory Fisher finished eight seconds behind, in fifth place, with a time of 15:30.75. The Varsity 4+ ‘A’ boat of Verwey, Purych, Kramer, Rosen and coxswain Fisher, led the Mountaineers with a second-place finish out of 27 schools. Finishing with a time of 16:30.83, the Mountaineers trailed behind Dayton by only two seconds.

Rowing Completes Action in Philadelphia

The West Virginia University rowing team had three women’s open 4+ crews place in the top 25, as well as two women’s open 8+ crews place in the top 20, at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta in Philadelphia, Pa.

“Our performances at the Head of the Schuylkill were disappointing overall because we expect more of ourselves at this point in our training year,” said coach Jimmy King. “The disappointment lies not merely in the results, but in the poor execution of our racing, especially regarding some of the technical elements on which we have recently worked.” The Varsity 4+ ‘A’ crew of Karen Verwey, Rachelle Purych, Kelly Kramer, Hilary Meale and coxswain Ellen Shular crossed the finish line of the 2.5-mile course in 15:54.86 for a fourth-place finish. The Mountaineers’ 8+ ‘A’ crew of Karen Verwey, Courtney Schrand, Jessica Hurlbert, Rachelle Purych, Mary Ignatiadis, Mollie Rosen, Kelly Kramer, Hilary Meale and coxswain Morgan Leach finished the race with a time of 14:38.99, placing them 12th overall.

The team started the day off by placing first, second and fourth in the women’s open doubles competition, with the ‘A’ crew of Mary Ignatiadis and Courtney Schrand finishing in 8:02.05, the ‘B’ crew finishing in 8:09.92 and the ‘C’ crew finishing in 8:22.89. In the varsity 4+ competitions, the ‘A’ crew of Schrand, Karen Verwey, Elizabeth Kantak, Jessica Hurlbert and coxswain Ellen Shular, finished first in their flight with a time of 8:04.05. The ‘B’ crew of Ignatiadis, Hilary Meale, Kelly Kramer, Mollie Rosen and coxswain Caitlin Madamba crossed the finish line in 8:09.68 for a first-place finish in their flight. Additionally, the ‘C’ crew finished second in the third flight. In the varsity 8+ competition, the WVU ‘A’ crew of Schrand, Verwey, Hurlbert, Danielle Widecrantz, Brianna Dendler, Danika Rencken, Kramer, Kantak and coxswain Mallory Fisher finished second in the first flight with a time of 7:12.11. The ‘B’ crew finished third in the second flight with a time of 7:37.06.

Rowing Completes Day One of Competition at Oak Ridge

The varsity 8+ ‘A’ crew of Hilary Meale, Rachelle Purych, Kelly Kramer, Lisa Deklau, Danielle Wide-

crantz, Jessica Hurlbert, Karen Verwey, Courtney Schrand, and coxswain Mallory Fisher, paced the Mountaineers in round one of racing, with a thirdplace finish of 6:57.90 against Louisville and Virginia. The 8+ ‘B’ crew of Tamyra Roberts, Jeannine McCarty, Bethany Anne Sapen, Mollie Rosen, Mary Ignatiadis, Elizabeth Kantak, Melinda Sharon, Elizabeth Duarte and coxswain Ellen Shular finished in third place as well. The varsity 4+ ‘A’ crew of Kaitlyn Eason, Susannah Hartlove, Allison Coates, Enya Messersmith and coxswain Alexandra Basil crossed the finish line in 8:24.50 for a third-place finish in their heat. In round two, the 8+ ‘A’ crew of Meale, Purych, Kramer, Ignatiadis, Widecrantz, Hurlbert, Verwey, Schrand and coxswain Morgan Leach paced the Mountaineers again in round two against Dayton and Miami with a time of 6:49.30, good enough for second place.

Rowing Earns One First, Two Runner Ups in Day Two at Oak Ridge Four WVU crews raced in round three of the regatta against Buffalo and Georgetown.

“We performed adequately considering the time of year and amount of water time we’ve had, but of course, we’re striving for more than merely adequate,” said head coach Jimmy King. “After improving our racing from round 1 to round 2, some of our crews took a step back in round 3, so that was a disappointing way to end the regatta” The varsity 8+ ‘A’ crew consisting of Rachelle Purych, Kelly Kramer, Hilary Meale, Mollie Rosen, Danielle Widecrantz, Jessica Hurlbert, Karen Verwey, Courtney Schrand and coxswain Ellen Shular crossed the finish line in 7:09.96. Their time was the best of the day for the Mountaineers and was good enough for a third-place finish.

Kantak, Jessica Hurlbert, Karen Verwey, Courtney Schrand, and coxswain Mallory Fisher paced the Mountaineers with a first-place finish (7:41.5) over the Golden Knights (7:43.2) and the Crimson Tide (7:52.1). “The best performance of the day was by our first varsity 8+ crew, and not just because they won, but in how they won,” King said. “For much of the race they were down open water to UCF gaining contact only in the last 500 meters. The poise with which they raced today made the difference in the end.” WVU’s second varsity 8+ crew of Bethany Anne Sapen, Melinda Sharon, Hilary Meale, Mary Ignatiadis, Mollie Rosen, Tamyra Roberts, Jeannine McCarty, Elizabeth Duarte, and coxswain Morgan Leach trailed behind UCF (7:48.4) and Alabama (7:50.4) for a third-place finish with a time of 7:57.6. The Crimson Tide took the top finishes in both the first and second varsity 4+ races, with the Mountaineers’ first varsity crew of Susannah Hartlove, Allison Coates, Danika Rencken, Mary Cook and coxswain Alexandra Basil finishing in third (9:13.9) and second varsity crew of Kendra Welker, Kaitlyn Eason, Enya Messersmith, Caroline Mullins and coxswain Sarah Dodd finishing in second (9:10.4). The Golden Knights did not have a crew compete in the varsity 4+ ‘B’ race.

Rowing Completes Competition at Knecht Cup

The West Virginia University rowing team concluded racing at the Knecht Cup on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J., with two crews placing in the top 10 of their respective events. The first varsity 8+ crew of Rachelle Purych, Lisa Deklau, Kelly Kramer, Danielle Widecrantz, Elizabeth Kantak, Jessica Hurlbert, Karen Verwey, Courtney Schrand and coxswain Mallory Fisher, set the stage

for the Mountaineers by advancing to the Grand Final of their event. WVU raced against Bucknell, Holy Cross, Barry, Northeastern and Bucknell (LWT), crossing the finish line in fifth place in 6:49.14. The crew earned the Mountaineers’ highest finish of the day, with a fifthplace finish out of 34 crews. Prior to the varsity 8+ event, the second varsity 8+ crew of Bethany Anne Sapen, Melinda Sharon, Mollie Rosen, Allison Coates, Hilary Meale, Mary Ignatiadis, Jeannine McCarty, Elizabeth Duarte and coxswain Ellen Shular advanced to the Petite Final of their event. The crew faced Buffalo, Old Dominion, Alabama, Dayton and North Carolina, and posted a fourthplace finish with a time of 7:12.88. The crew’s finish was good enough for a 10th-place finish out of 31 entries.

Rowing Completes Competition at Bucknell

“Our performances versus Bucknell and Delaware were our most complete as a team this season, said head coach Jimmy King. “We narrowed the margins in all events relative to Bucknell from two weeks ago. Our 4s finally put forth quality-racing efforts and we look for them to continue improving as we enter the championship season.” The first varsity 4+ crew comprised of Enya Messersmith, Allison Coates, Susannah Hartlove, Rachel Cokeley and coxswain Morgan Leach also finished second to Bucknell (6:48.0) with a time of 6:58.1. The first varsity 8+ crew comprised of Rachelle Purych, Danielle Widecrantz, Kelly Kramer, Lisa Deklau, Elizabeth Kantak, Jessica Hurlbert, Karen Verwey, Courtney Schrand and coxswain Mallory Fisher ended round one of racing for WVU with a second-place finish in 6:53.2 behind Bucknell (6:49.0).

The varsity 4+ crew of Allison Coates, Enya Messersmith, Caroline Mullins, Susannah Hartlove and coxswain Alexandra Basil wrapped up competition for WVU with a time of 8:22.84, good enough for second place.

Rowing Earns One First at Alabama

The West Virginia University rowing team, which was competing in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on the Black Warrior River against Alabama and UCF, earned one first-place finish. “Today’s racing presented an excellent opportunity to evaluate our crews in true racing conditions and to measure ourselves against Conference USA foes Alabama and UCF,” said coach Jimmy King. The first varsity 8+ crew concluded competition for the Mountaineers with a first-place finish in 6:54.2 over Delaware (7:08.7).

Rowing Places Fourth at Big 12s

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University rowing team concluded racing at the Big 12 Championships on the Wyandotte County Lake in Kansas City, Kan. The Mountaineers competed in five of the six events, tallying 75 points for a fourthplace finish overall. “I’m pleased with the overall performance of our team today,” said coach Jimmy King. “Regardless of the finish position of any of our crews, each crew has clearly progressed over the past few weeks.” WVU’s varsity eight crew of Rachelle Purych, Danielle Widecrantz, Kelly Kramer, Lisa Deklau, Elizabeth Kantak, Jessica Hurlbert, Karen Verwey, Courtney Schrand and coxswain Mallory Fisher kicked off racing for the Mountaineers by competing in the first event of the day. The crew crossed the finish line in 6:36.45 in third place, a spot higher than its seed of fourth, behind Oklahoma (6:28.39) and Texas (6:31.15). the All-Big 12 Second Team. Following the varsity eight, the second varsity eight lined up to race. The crew of Bethany Anne Sapen, Melinda Sharon, Mollie Rosen, Tamyra Roberts, Hilary Meale, Mary Ignatiadis, Jeannine McCarty, Elizabeth Duarte and coxswain Ellen Shular finished the race in 6:46.66. The crew finished fourth, a spot higher than its seed of fifth, behind Oklahoma (6:34.24), Kansas (6:41.14) and Texas (6:46.15), but ahead of Kansas State (6:54.16). Next up for the Mountaineers was the first varsity four heat. The crew of Enya Messersmith, Allison Coates, Susannah Hartlove, Rachel Cokeley and coxswain Morgan Leach finished fifth with a time of 7:48. 61, behind Oklahoma (7:18.92), Texas (7:20.15), Kansas State (7:24.82) and Kansas (7:31.55).

Rowing Places Sixth at C-USA Championship

The West Virginia University rowing team had its 2013 spring season come to a close as it placed sixth in the Conference USA Rowing Championship held on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The Mountaineers accumulated 36 team points – one behind Kansas State’s 37 points that placed it fifth overall. The first varsity 8+ crew of Jessica Hurlbert, Courtney Schrand, Rachelle Purych, Lisa Deklau, Danielle Widecrantz, Karen Verwey, Kelly Kramer, Liz Kantak and coxswain Mallory Fisher registered a third-place

finish (6:49.53) in its heat and a fifth-place finish (6:47.56) in its Grand Final. The second varsity 8+ crew of Hilary Meale, Mary Ignatiadis, Mollie Rosen, Bethany Anne Sapen, Melinda Sharon, Tamyra Roberts, Jeannine McCarty, Elizabeth Duarte and coxswain Ellen Shular finished third (6:59.59) in its heat and placed fifth (7:06.06) in its Grand Final. In the varsity 4+ competition, the Mountaineers’ crew of Enya Messersmith, Susannah Hartlove, Rachel Cokeley, Allison Coates and coxswain Morgan Leach finished sixth (7:59.62) in its heat. In its Petite Final, the crew placed fifth (7:59.88). In open 4+ competition, WVU had two crews compete. With both Mountaineer crews competing in the Petite Final, the 4+ ‘B’ crew of Summer Socha, Caroline Mullins, Mary Cook, Kendra Welker and coxswain Brittany James placed third (8:03.84), while the ‘A’ crew of Danika Rencken, Kaitlyn Eason, Sarah Taylor, Kimberlie May and coxswain Sarah Dodd finished fourth (8:07.27). Following racing action, the C-USA All-Conference Team was announced, with Schrand being the lone WVU representative. For Schrand, it is her second all-conference honor of the season, as she was named All-Big 12 First Team at the Big 12 Championship.

HENLEY ROYAL REGATTA

INCHES MAKE CHAMPIONS

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The sport of rowing is not one in which achievements are often recognized. So when the West Virginia University rowing team acquired a new Varsity 4+ Vespoli racing shell and was contemplating a name, the decision to reach out and ask some former team members for help came as a pleasant surprise. “It was such an honor,” said former coxswain Christine DiRienzo. “When Tina Griffith sent us an email telling us that they were going to name the boat and wanted us to help, I immediately pulled out my old photo album and starting looking through everything.” DiRienzo had many fond memories to reminisce upon, including the 2001 season when she led the women’s Varsity 4+ to a first-place finish at the Dad Vail Regatta, subsequently earning an invitation to the Women’s Royal Henley Regatta in England, one of the most prestigious events in women’s rowing. In fact, it was this very accomplishment that had five women traveling from all areas of the country in early October, from both east and west coast, to come to Morgantown and participate in a boat christening in their honor. It had been nearly ten years since Griffith, Risha Kelley, Erin Nisbet, Noelle Dodge and DiRienzo had come together for a crew related event, and for a few, the first time they had seen each other in nearly a decade. There was laughter, hugs, and memories to share, but perhaps most importantly, a lasting legacy to leave behind for future generations of Mountaineer rowers. A legacy of what can happen when hard work, determination and enthusiasm are put forth every day. The journey to Henley began during the team’s spring training trip in Miami. The coach at that time, Nancy LaRocque, noticed right away that this group of women had something special. “She noticed that we had really good flow and really good body mechanics,” said Dodge. “When she saw that she kept telling us that we could be great and that we could be the best. We believed that, and we just felt unstoppable. We were all mentally in it to win it.” The team won its first race of the season convincingly, beating Cincinnati and Louisville to the finish line at Hersha Lake with a time of 7:23.6. But it was the second race of the season that really changed the way they looked at things. After making it to the finals at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association’s (SIRA) Regatta, the team came in second to Jacksonville by mere inches. It was a loss that would spur the team on to great success, though they didn’t know it at the time. “We had such drive after the race in Tennessee,” detailed Nisbet. “It just drove us for the rest of the season. We just had confidence and we walked around with our heads up knowing that no one was going to take us down again and no one was going to beat us. I just remember having this fuel, and this feeling inside that once we got into the boat, no one was going to get in our way. After we finished a race, we were focused on the next challenge and thinking about how we were going to achieve and overcome it.” The team next took on the BIG EAST Championships, where it won in a BIG EAST record setting time of 7:33.08, before moving on to the Dad Vail Regatta. The Dad Vail Regatta is the largest collegiate regatta in the United States, with over 100 colleges and universities from across the United States and Canada converging in Philadelphia during the second weekend of May. It would have been an honor for the West Virginia team just to finish well. But this Varsity 4+ had trained long and hard for a race such as this, and they weren’t going to take home anything less than gold. “When you really mesh with your team and your group, you really feel

the flow,” Nisbet explained. “You can just feel and anticipate each other’s movements, something that’s really hard to obtain. But once you get that and you know what that feeling is, you’re able to get that in a lot of those races. Instead of four rowers, we were able to become one which is really what drove us.” The Mountaineers earned a much deserved victory that day before heading back to Morgantown to finish school and start the beginning of their summer vacations. They never anticipated what would happen next. “After we won Vails, we didn’t know right away that we were going to go to Henley,” Nisbet reminisced. “There were a few weeks in between and then we got the call and we had to come back to school. We had all just started our summer jobs and the next thing we know we get a call saying that we need to come back to school for a few weeks to train.” “My parents had got me a graduation trip to Mexico and we couldn’t go,” laughed DiRienzo. “My brother was so mad at me!” Invitations to Women’s Royal Henley are few and far between. After the team’s convincing win, the Dad Vail Regatta organizers selected the West Virginia team to travel to Henley because it felt that the team had the best chance of winning, despite the fact that no team the committee had ever selected had ever made it past the second round. Upon arriving in England, the women noticed right away that things were done much differently in Europe. “I remember that the course was 1,500-meters for the women because as a women’s crew you couldn’t finish or go over the men’s finish line which was at 2,000-meters,” explained Dodge. “We trained for 2,000-meters and we only had to race 1,500. It made it somewhat easier, but in Europe they row at a much faster rate and every stroke was faster. So the faster pace made it much more challenging because the way we rowed was slow, strong and steady.” “You’d think it would be easier just because it’s shorter,” added DiRiezno. “But your body is already trained for 2,000-meters so you know how to hold it.” In addition, instead of racing four to six crews at a time as they do in the United States, at Henley, only two crews race in each heat. Due to this, the women had to race in three rounds, each with a quick turnaround. They sailed through the first round, easily defeating Bowdoin’s crew. The next race wasn’t so easy, however. “The second race was really close; it had the feel of a final race. It was against Birmingham and we emptied the tank on that one because it was such a neck to neck race,” said Dodge. “We took the boat off the water afterwards and put it on the shore and literally five minutes later we had to pick it up and put it back in the water for the finals.” The team came in second to England’s Oxford Brookes University in the final round. Despite coming in second place, there is no denying that the team accomplished something that no one could ever have expected. “When we came back, even though we didn’t win, it was considered such an honor for the University that the president at the time, David Hardesty, got us plaques to honor us for going over and representing West Virginia,” said DiRienzo. “It’s the best plaque I ever received,” added Griffith. It seems only appropriate that ten years later, the team was welcomed back to Morgantown with open arms to celebrate a journey that hasn’t been equaled since. And only more appropriate that the shell was christened the Inches Make Champions, in honor of the race in Tennessee that truly propelled the team on its record-breaking path to Henley. As the team stood in front of the newest members of the rowing program, telling stories, drinking champagne and reminiscing, it became very clear that while many rowing achievements may go unrecognized, this is one that will never be forgotten.

Dr. E. Gordon Gee served as president of The Ohio State University from 1990 to 1997 and again from 2007 to 2013. Prior to his service at Ohio State, he led Vanderbilt University (2001-2007), Brown University (1998-2000), the University of Colorado (1985-1990), and West Virginia University (1981-1985). He returned to WVU to serve as president for a term in January 2014. Gee has served in higher education for more than three decades and in 2009 was named by Time magazine as one of the top-10 university presidents in the United States. Born in Vernal, Utah, Gee graduated from the University of Utah with an honors degree in history and earned his J.D. and Ed.D degrees from Columbia University. He clerked under Chief Justice David T. Lewis of the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals before being named a judicial fellow and staff assistant to the U.S. Supreme Court. In this role, he worked for Chief Justice Warren Burger on administrative and legal problems of the Court and federal judiciary. Gee returned to Utah as an associate professor and associate dean in the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University, and was granted full professorship in 1978. One year later, he was named dean of the West Virginia University Law School, and, in 1981, was appointed to that university’s presidency. Gee has been a member of several education-governance organizations and committees, including the Big Ten Conference Council of Presidents, the Inter-University Council of Ohio, the Business-Higher Education Forum, and the American Association of Universities. He was chair of the American Council on Education’s Commission on Higher Education Attainment and served as co-chair of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities’ Energy Advisory Committee. In 2009, Gee was invited to join the International Advisory Board of King Adbulaziz University in Saudi Arabia. Active in a number of national professional and service organizations during his tenures, he has served on the boards for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Inc., Limited Brands, and the National 4-H Council. In 2011, Gee was appointed to serve as secretary on the Board of Directors of Ohio’s economic development program, JobsOhio. In 2011-2012, he was asked by Governor Kasich to chair both the Ohio Higher Education Capital Funding Collaborative and the Ohio Higher Education Funding Commission. And in December 2012, he was asked to serve on the Columbus Education Commission. Gee has received a number of honorary degrees, awards, fellowships, and recognitions. He is a fellow of the prestigious American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest science organization. In 1994, Gee received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Utah, as well as from Teachers College of Columbia University. In 2013, he received the ACE Council of Fellows/Fidelity Investments Mentor Award and received the Outstanding Academic Leader of the Year Award on behalf of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. He is the co-author of 11 books, including Law, Policy and Higher Education, published in 2012. He is also the author of numerous papers and articles on law and education. Gee’s daughter, Rebekah, is the Medicaid Medical Director for the State of Louisiana, and an assistant professor of Public Health and Medicine at Louisiana State University. She is also a Norman F. Gant/American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology/IOM Anniversary Fellow.

Oliver Luck

Successful at each of his previous career stops, Oliver Luck continues that streak at West Virginia University. A former Mountaineer quarterback, Luck, appointed the University’s 11th Director of Athletics by President James P. Clements on June 9, 2010, has made significant strides in his first three years to enhance WVU’s role as a major player in the collegiate world. In his first year, Luck hired four head coaches, while maintaining WVU’s superior level of success. In addition to new hires, Luck oversaw the progress of major capital projects, such as the $25 million WVU basketball practice facility for men’s and women’s basketball and the women’s soccer training complex. He also fostered an atmosphere for achievement and triumph in the classroom and on the field. In year two, Luck led WVU into the Big 12 Conference, oversaw the best fundraising year in school history, implemented several safety and crowd enhancements at Mountaineer sporting events, increased overall department revenue, continued a master plan for facility upgrades and watched his football program gain its third BCS bowl victory with a record-setting 70-33 win in the Orange Bowl. In year three, Luck oversaw the reseating of the WVU Coliseum to further increase WVU’s fundraising efforts. He added an 18th varsity sport - the return of men’s golf – teeing it up in 2015 for the first time since 1982, and he continues his tireless work on facility upgrades to keep the Mountaineers competitive in the Big 12. Luck’s athletic and professional career has been the epitome of success, first as a record-setting quarterback for the Mountaineers from 1978-81, then as a professional quarterback for the National Football League’s Houston Oilers, and later as a professional sports executive. Luck’s journey to the big chair at WVU began in his native Cleveland, where in 1977 he was named the Cleveland Touchdown Club Player of the Year at St. Ignatius High. Luck chose WVU over Ivy League schools Harvard and Yale, embarking upon a career that saw him establish school records for touchdown passes and completions during his playing days, while also leading the Mountaineers to a 26-6 upset victory over Florida in the 1981 Peach Bowl. His best season came as a senior in 1981 when he completed 216 of 394 passes for 2,448 yards and 16 touchdowns. He passed for a career-high 360 yards in a 27-24 loss to Syracuse at the Carrier Dome in the final regular-season game of his career. Luck ended his college career with 5,765 yards and 43 touchdown passes, both figures still ranking among the best in school history. Luck was a two-time team MVP in 1980 and 1981, and also received the Louis D. Meisel Award for the WVU football student-athlete with the highest grade point average. The two-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American was the recipient of Today’s Top Five, presented for scholastics by the NCAA and was selected by the National Football Foundation as one of its 10 scholar-athletes to make a keynote speech at its annual banquet in 1982. Selected in the second round of the NFL draft by the Houston Oilers (44th overall pick), Luck spent four years with the Oilers from 1982-86. His most extended action came in 1983 when he started six games and finished the season completing 124-of-217 passes for 1,375 yards and eight touchdowns. After retiring from football, Luck became vice president of business development for the NFL and later was appointed general manager of the Frankfurt Galaxy of the newly created World League of American Football. He spent the ’95 season as general manager of the Rhein Fire before being named President and CEO of NFL Europe in 1996. Luck totaled more than 10 years with the NFL, before becoming chief executive officer of the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority in 2001. In that role, Luck oversaw the development and management of a $1 billion professional sports and entertainment complex for the city of Houston that included Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros, Reliant Stadium, home of the Houston Texans, the Toyota Center, home of the Houston Rockets, Comets and Aeros and the Livestock Show and Rodeo. In 2005, Luck was appointed as the first president of Major League Soccer’s Houston Dynamos, helping that organization to a pair of MLS Cup titles in his first two years at the helm. Luck secured the funding for an $80 million soccer complex to house the Dynamos when the call came to return to his alma mater. BBVA Compass Stadium was built and opened in 2012 adding to Luck’s legacy with the professional soccer team, and the overall Houston sports facility complexes. He returned in May, 2012 for the opening ceremony of the soccer stadium that he fought so hard for. Prior to his current position at WVU, Luck was appointed to a four-year term on the West Virginia University Board of Governors, a spot he relinquished to become director of athletics. The Rhodes Scholar finalist graduated Phi Beta Kappa from WVU in 1982. He also earned a law degree from Texas, graduating cum laude in 1987. In 1997, Luck was inducted into the West Virginia University Sports Hall of Fame, and in 2000, he was inducted into the CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Fame. “It’s an incredible honor for me to be the athletic director at my alma mater,” said Luck. “I care deeply about this school, and WVU is truly one of the outstanding land-grant universities in the country. I am so pleased to be a part of the leadership team assembled under President Clements at a dynamic and strategic time in its history.” He is married to the former Kathy Wilson. They have two sons and two daughters: Andrew, a former All-American quarterback and two-time Heisman Trophy finalist at Stanford and No. 1 overall pick of the 2012 NFL draft by the Indianapolis Colts; Mary Ellen, a senior volleyball player at Stanford; Emily, a sophomore at Stanford and Addison, who attends Morgantown High.
