A MESSAGE FROM DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
Shane Lyons The COVID-19 pandemic presented many challenges for our student-athletes during the 2020-21 season. Scheduling changes, game cancellations, travel problems and limited fans in our venues took a big toll on our athletic teams. However, I am thankful and proud of the way our student-athletes, coaches and staff handled these challenges to accomplish many great things, which you will read about in this annual report. In the past year, our department had 37 All-Americans, 15 national award winners and 70 All-Conference performers as six of our teams made the NCAA tournament and another 15 individuals qualified for NCAA championships. While all the accomplishments are too numerous to name, some highlights included men’s basketball coach Bob Huggins winning his 900th game, football coach Neal Brown leading our program to a winning season and a bowl victory, women’s basketball coach Mike Carey winning his 700th career game, women’s basketball and women’s soccer finishing second in the Big 12 Conference and cross country finishing third at the conference championships. In the classroom, we won 28 individual academic honors, produced 262 Academic All-Conference selections and continued our strong Academic Progress Rate (APR). Rifle’s Verena Zaisberger was a Scholar-Athlete of the Year and four teams earned academic recognition in their sport. All of our accomplishments are detailed in the pages to come but rest assured that our success in competition and in the classroom is a direct reflection of your support for Mountaineer athletics, and I again thank you for everything you have done for our department. None of our success would happen without your contributions to the Mountaineer Athletic Club, and we appreciate your understanding of how you can make a difference in support of our more than 450 Mountaineer student-athletes.
2
In the coming year, I will chair the all-important NCAA Division I Council, and it’s an honor to represent you and my alma mater on that prestigious national committee. Also, in the coming year, we look forward to welcoming you all back to our athletic venues at 100% capacity. It’s been a long time coming, and our teams can’t wait for your return. Stay safe, be well, and I hope you enjoy reading our 2020-21 Annual Report. While it was a difficult year for all of us, I think you will find many accomplishments by our teams and student-athletes that will make you proud to be a part of Mountaineer Nation. Sincerely,
Shane Lyons Director of Athletics/Associate Vice President West Virginia University

Mountaineers Adapt to Life With COVID-19 in 2020-21 The COVID-19 pandemic that took hold in the spring of 2020 and raged throughout the summer and fall, held on as the calendar turned to 2021, wreaking havoc with day-to-day life across the globe. Masks and social distancing became commonplace, but the emergence of vaccines near the beginning of 2021 finally helped bring about a return to some sort of normalcy. While seasons were shorter, seating capacities were reduced, games were rescheduled, testing was prevalent and student-athletes missed games, sports did return to West Virginia University for the 2020-21 season.

Athletics Facilities Update In the summer of 2018, Shane Lyons stood before a room full of reporters to map out his vision for the future. He was holding a wooden pointer
16
and behind him was a visual display of the Climbing Higher Campaign, an ambitious, $100 million capital improvement initiative announced that afternoon. He talked about refurbishing the WVU Coliseum and Milan Puskar Center complexes and improving facilities for some of West Virginia’s Olympic sports teams. He said if there isn’t a crane somewhere on campus or a construction project ongoing, then West Virginia University is falling behind or going backward. “We need to continue moving our department forward,” he said at the time. “These are not wants … these are needs. We need these things for our department and our student-athletes as we continue to grow. You look at the success we’ve had in basketball, soccer and baseball and I think some of that correlates to the improvements made
with their facilities from a recruiting and coach retention standpoint.” The WVU Coliseum received a new video board and seats this past fall and some of the other projects Lyons discussed that day, such as the renovation of the Milan Puskar Center and the massive new Olympic Sports Performance Center have become realities. That’s a credit to the great vision put forth by Lyons, WVU President Gordon Gee and the WVU Board of Governors, as well as the tremendous generosity of Mountaineer Nation because the financing for these projects has come through private donations and bonds along with WVU’s relationship with Learfield.

Huggins and Carey pick up Milestone Wins Mountaineer basketball coaches Bob Huggins and Mike Carey racked up milestone wins this past season. Huggins won his 900th career game with an 84-67 victory over Morehead State in the first round of the NCAA tournament in Indianapolis, becoming just the sixth Division I basketball coach to reach the milestone. He joined Mike Krzyzewski, Jim Boeheim, Jim Calhoun,
Roy Williams and Bob Knight in the exclusive club. In 14 seasons with the Mountaineers, Huggins has posted a 310-171 mark and been to the postseason 12 times - 10 NCAA berths, the NIT and the CBI. Prior to returning home to WVU in 2007, he had a 23-12 record in one season at Kansas State, a 399-127 record in 16 seasons at

Cincinnati, a 97-46 mark in five seasons at Akron and a 71-26 record in three seasons at Walsh. The winningest coach in program history, Carey won his 700th career game over LSU in the South Point Thanksgiving Shootout. In his 33 seasons as a head coach, Carey has posted a 720-325 mark and became
one of eight coaches nationally who surpassed 700 career wins in 2020-21. In 20 seasons at WVU, Carey has a 432-223 record. Prior to WVU, he was 288-102 in 13 seasons as the men’s coach at Salem. The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association recognized Carey as a member of its Victory Club.

Lyons and Zinn Earn Recognition
In the most challenging year of their professional careers, Shane Lyons and Keli Zinn also had rewarding experiences. Lyons was named one of four Athletics Directors of the Year for the Football Bowl Subdivision by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), while Zinn was recognized by Silver Waves Media as on of its top assistant athletics directors in the country. Also joining Lyons as this year’s Football Bowl Subdivision recipients were Coastal Carolina’s Matt Hogue,
BYU’s Tom Holmoe and Oregon’s Rob Mullens. According to the announcement, the award “highlights the efforts of athletics directors at all levels for their commitment and positive contributions to studentathletes, campuses and their surrounding communities.” Lyons has certainly contributed a lot of positives in year filled with negatives. In the spring of 2020, a once-ina-lifetime pandemic shut down the country, canceled March Madness and threatened the college football season.
19
Athletics directors from Washington to Miami were staring into the abyss. Lyons, as chair of the NCAA Division I Football Committee, was presented with a crisis that required some momentous decision making. Could college football be played safely in the fall during a worldwide pandemic? If not, what does that mean for the future of collegiate sports? Lyons not only had to steer his alma mater through this crisis, but also an entire industry because of his involvement on the Division I Football Committee. In the summer of 2020, when some columnists and pundits were recommending college football be canceled, Lyons and West Virginia University President E. Gordon Gee urged everyone to be patient and not overreact to each piece of conflicting medical data being reported. Lyons also had to make some difficult decisions within his department to help it survive the pandemic. He said he relied on the talents of his senior leadership team and also the University administration to put forth a solid plan moving forward. Zinn was one of those on that senior leadership team, and here’s what Silver Waves Media wrote of her in recognizing her for the award: Zinn, a WVU graduate, has helped to lead the Mountaineers athletic
program to excel in football, basketball, golf, baseball, and many other notable sports. She is the athletic department’s primary liaison for the University’s central administration and works closely with WVU’s general counsel, strategic initiatives, finance and human resources. In 2014, Zinn was appointed to interim Director of Athletics and became the first female to lead the University’s Athletic Department. In 2020, Zinn was inducted into the WVU College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences’ Hall of Fame. Other achievements include The Sports Business Journal naming Zinn as a recipient of the prestigious Forty Under 40 Awards in 2019, being honored as WVU’s Distinguished Alumnus of the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences in 2018, and being selected among the Sports Business Journal’s Game Changers in 2016. Silver Waves Media came up with its list after consulting coaches, presidents, search firms and influencers. A total of 84 administrators were recognized.
