ALLAmerican Joby Foley (1988-90) VIRGINIA BEACH, VA
Playing No. 1 singles for the first Mountaineer team to qualify for the NCAA tournament, Foley earned first team All-America honors in doubles with partner Ray Kurey for their top 16 finish at the 1988 tournament at Georgia, the first Mountaineer tandem ever to achieve that status. The next year, Foley and teammate Brad Kelly advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals in doubles, earning All-America honors again. In 1989, Foley dropped back to the No. 2 slot in singles, but helped the Mountaineers earn another Eastern title, an NCAA berth and swept the Atlantic 10 Championship. As a senior in 1990, Foley, playing at the No. 1 position, was ranked as high as 10th in the nation and was seeded eighth for the NCAA tournament, earning All-America distinction in singles, a first for a Mountaineer. He won the John Van Nostrand Award as the East’s top singles player. During his outstanding career, Foley won four tournaments to capture the USTA amateur grand slam during the summer of 1989, earning him a berth to qualify for the U.S. Open; he also competed in the Volvo All-American Tournament, the Rolex Eastern Invitational championships and the national indoor doubles championship, helping WVU earn a Top-20 ranking and NCAA tournament bids in 1988, 1989 and 1990.
Brad Kelly (1989-90) CHARLSTON, W.VA.
Teamed up with Joby Foley in doubles, Kelly and his partner advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals with wins over tandems from 16th-ranked Georgia and 10th-ranked Brigham Young to earn first team All-America status in 1989. Kelly and Foley captured the Atlantic 10 doubles title in 1989 and 1990. Playing as high as No. 3 singles, Kelly helped the Mountaineers earn three straight team invitations (1988-90) to the NCAA tournament during his tenure as well.
Ray Kurey (1988) BETHANY, W.VA.
A four-year singles performer for West Virginia, Kurey saw the Mountaineers win their first Eastern title and earn WVU’s first-ever trip to the NCAA tournament during his stellar career. Battling back from a knee injury as a sophomore, he partnered with Joby Foley to earn All-America status in doubles in 1988, advancing to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament at Georgia.
