These days we are given the luxury of choice on our method of travel, whether it is by land, sea or air. A recent journey by cruise left me with a unique outlook on travel, and has allowed me to fully immerse myself in the country and its fascinating history. I would like to share a personal cruise experience that covered the picturesque Three Gorges, eastwarddownstream to Hubei province. The cruise exceeded my expectations when I first got on board. The interior and the overall atmosphere was akin to a 5-star hotel. The wide range of activities and entertainment options available kept me occupied for the duration of my journey. I crossed the Yangtze River, and was captivated by the stunning scenery of the Three Gorges. The beauty of the crystal clear river was enhanced by the surrounding lush, green valleys in the area. The Jingzhou day tour began from Hubei province. Every morning I was greeted by a different view of the river. Wisps of mist hung in the humid air, distant peaks served as a backdrop and contrasted against the red and orange sky; these natural elements contributed to the spellbinding aura of the entire place. After having a hearty breakfast in my cabin, my exploration of the Three Gorges began. We cruised through the Xiling Gorge and delved deeper into the history of the Three Gorges Dam which received lots of controversy. It flooded a region the size of Singapore causing over 1.2 million people to relocate, and brought massive destruction to roughly 90% of the historical sites housing relics dating back to the Tang Dynasty. Despite the unfortunate accident, this dam is an engineering feat, its ability to control water levels prevents flooding in the region. In addition, the operation of the Three Gorges hydropower station protects the environment by reducing tons of carbon dioxide emissions. Reaching the banks of the Yangtze River, we visited historical Baidi Town, the ghost town of Shiyan, Shennong Stream and Baoding Mountain etc. I enjoyed learning more about the three kingdoms, and understanding them in my own pace and time. For instance, did you know that Baidi Town used to be where the Emperor of the Shu Kingdom- during the Three Kingdoms Period between 220-280 AD? Liu Bei retreated to when his kingdom faced a devastating defeat by the Wu Kingdom. On that note, I hope that you will be as inspired to travel by cruise-continue reading to find more related features, and gain more information on cruise lines and their new routes.

Taichung City Mazu International Festival TAIWAN

Every year, millions of pilgrims gather to pay homage to Mazu, a renowned deity in Taiwan, in the city of Taichung, Dajia District. What makes this so outstanding is the scope of the festival and the way it unfolds. Aptly dubbed the “Mazu March Mania”, the nine-day cultural and religious event consists of a multi-city pilgrimage that covers an incredible journey of 300 kilometers. Pilgrims have been known to walk up to 12 hours a day, visiting more than 100 temples along the way with the statue of Mazu. The pilgrimage has become a significant religious practice, so much so that it is recognised by UNESCO as a world intangible or living heritage.

Takayama Spring Festival JAPAN

Since 1652, the quaint town of Takayama has actively kept the spirit of spring alive with their boisterous communitydriven ceremony. The 2-day celebration showcases intricately crafted floats with Karakuri mechanical puppets, automated Japanese puppets manufactured in the 17th to 19th centuries, propped on the top of the multi-coloured floats. Due to their antiquity, the floats have become important cultural assets of Japan. As the sun sets, the narrow streets are enveloped with the glowing lights permeating from the many Japanese lanterns embellishing the magnificent structures. A similar festival that is as notable as the spring festival, is the autumn festival that falls in October. Unlike its counterpart however, the autumn festival uses floats sponsored by different shrines.

INVIGORATING EXPERIENCES AT INCREDIBLE PRICES

Thousands attend the much anticipated bi-annual Travel Revolution Fair, and walked away with more than just goodie bags and freebies.

O

n Friday, the 26th of February 2016, the atmosphere outside the doors of Marina Bay Sands Expo Hall E was abuzz with anticipation and excitement as throngs of eager travellers waited for the doors to open at 11am. Travel Revolution Fair (TRF) 2016 was visited by an impressive 82,000 people. Thanks to supporting partners and key industry players, the recent fair has once again seen a spectacular turnout. Organised by the Singapore Outbound Travel Agents Association (SOTAA) for the third time since its inception, it was clear that TRF was well worth the wait. Farmosa Tours noted they had repeat customers who came back to book their trips. “We are quite happy with the results of the fair, especially with the response for our Australia tours for which we have many attractive offers,” Product Development Manager of Famosa Holidays, Ms. Annie Wong shared. Whether it is a group tour, or an itinerary that allows for freedom and flexibility, TRF had it all. Exhibitor Ms Shirley Shi from TravelStar Pte Ltd was pleased with the crowds that TRF amassed, so much so that TravelStar has extended its TRF promotions until mid-April. “As we have been appointed the official travel agency for the city of Chongqing, China, this has been one of the destinations that become the focal point of our promotion. The most popular destinations amongst travellers were film locations, such as the ones from the box office hit, Transformers 4, which also includes The Three Gorges that is featured in our Golden Cruise package,” said Ms Shirley Shi. Consumers may also visit the seven different National Tourism Organisations that were present during the fair to gain more information and a deeper understanding of the various destinations. REDISCOVERING LANDS FROM A NEW PERSPECTIVE

Over the past three days of the Travel Revolution Fair, travel workshops featuring the most popular destinations in the world explored different countries in a whole new light. New Zealand Workshop

New Zealand’s Self-Drive Holiday travel workshop was the first to be fully booked by travel enthusiasts wanting to know more about taking the road less travelled. Organised by Travel Journal, the hour-long talk gave attendees a better understanding of New Zealand’s best travel routes and useful self-drive travel tips from the experts themselves. Tourism New Zealand got the ball rolling with a basic introduction about the land of the Kiwis, a common term used to describe the people of New Zealand, before touching on the scenic spots and travel routes in the country. Christchurch & Canterbury Tourism provided the crowd with insights on what to see and do. Hertz continued the session by providing the crowd with valuable information on driving in New Zealand, together with some dos and don’ts. The

we believe the workshop organiser did. The session was truly inspiring to us as a couple. The coverage on flights, culture, and road-drive tips was highly informative. We have ruled out other places in our list of choices as we are now more inclined on New Zealand for this year’s vacation”.

final segment was presented by Air New Zealand, whose representative updated the crowd on their new services, promotions, as well as provide relevant information on the frequency of flights. During the seminar, the crowd was treated to some tasty treats from New Zealand. Participants were also given a chance to take part in an instant draw. One lucky winner walked away with a car rental package worth over S$300 (sponsored by Hertz) for driving in New Zealand. “Driving in New Zealand is a pleasure as the roads are well-signed and well-maintained with picturesque landscapes along the way. I’m happy to share the fun of driving holidays with Singaporeans, and get them excited to go on a road trip in New Zealand with HERTZ for a smooth and safe journey,” said Mr. Wong Yan Kit, Manager of International Sales for Hertz. Everyone in attendance also received travel packs, which included travel itineraries and freebies sponsored by the supporting partners of the workshop. A survey conducted by Travel Journal after the workshop revealed that 97% of those in attendance stated that they were satisfied with the session. Ashwin and Anandhi, were one such couple who attended the workshop together and found it useful. “An extraordinary place such as this, needs to be promoted and that’s what

As the 50-seat workshop arena started filling up, it was clear that everyone in attendance could hardly wait to hear all about this little prefecture in Japan. The presenter, Mr. Katsuya Tamaki, Director of Okinawa Prefectural Government Singapore Representative Office began the session with some basic facts about the island and proceeded to talk more about Okinawa. The participants got exclusive first-hand information from the Okinawan local about the best travel routes to Okinawa as well as top sights and attractions. Various videos about Okinawa’s pristine beaches, clear waters, hidden gems and most importantly – Okinawan cuisine – were also played during the presentation to provide a clearer visual idea about this diving paradise, frequently dubbed as the “Hawaii of Asia”. The mini-seminar ended off with a lucky draw, where five audience members walked away with Okinawan

memorabilia. Participants were also invited for a photo session with Okinawa’s adorable mascot, who delighted both children and adults alike. It was an excellent and very well-organised guide for would-be travellers,” she said.

What better way to learn about a foreign location than from the locals themselves? Upon learning about the travel workshops, Mr. Irvinder Singh of Incredible Odyssey was more than happy to share his knowledge and expertise on Bhutan, Himalayas, and Sri Lanka. Invited by Farmosa Holiday Tours to conduct talks on these novel destinations during the Travel Revolution Fair, all three workshops proved to be a massive success. With his 23 years of experience in customizing itineraries that varies across different courses and events, extending from family holidays, mountaineering expeditions to pilgrimage tours in India, Bhutan and Nepal, it was clear that he was the right person for the job. “There needs to be more awareness and participation surrounding these countries because people need to understand, especially with countries such as India, that these places are completely safe for holidays. With our escorted tours, visitors are not only safe, but they also get to experience life by walking around in the shoes of a local, which provides for a much more valuable experience,” said Mr. Irvinder Singh.

Bhutan - The Kingdom of Happiness

The first workshop was Bhutan, known to be the country with the highest Gross National Happiness. In the workshop, participants got to know more about its untouched natural splendour as the presenter, Mr. Dependra Chettri, from Incredible Odyssey donned his traditional bhutanese costume to showcase breathtakingly beautiful photos of Bhutan. Participants learned about Bhutan’s sacred spaces from temples and monasteries to striking works of art. He then proceeded to talk more about travelling in Bhutan, with his accommodation recommendations and essential travel tips.

Himalayas on Wheels

The second workshop was held on the second day of the Travel Revolution Fair. Mr. Irvinder Singh, from Incredible Odyssey provided the participants with an engaging and interactive presentation. With his comprehensive and detailed introduction of Himalayas, exploring the snow-capped mountains of Ladakh in winter or the panoramic wonders of Himachal Pradesh in summer did not seem like an impossible dream. Aimed at all travellers, young and old, the workshop delivered a wealth of information about exploring the terrains of Himalayas on four wheels. Participants got information on multiple travel routes to discover the Himalayas, as well as an introduction to the cuisines of the hills. Participants who were keen to find out more also stayed behind to ask more questions about the destination.

Refreshingly Sri Lanka

On the last day of Travel Revolution Fair, the Sri Lanka Travel Workshop was conducted by Mr. Tandley Maruti from Sri Lankan Airlines and Mr Khem Raj Thakur from Incredible Odyssey. Presenters uncovered Sri Lanka’s natural beauty and allowed participants to get a fresh perspective on this tiny island that is located a little off the south of India. Home to numerous scenic beaches, the presenters played a couple of videos to illustrate the island’s magnificence. These three workshops ended off with an instant lucky draw. Three participants in each travel workshop walked away with hotel vouchers to The Himalayas sponsored by Incredible Odyssey. As the official organisers for the workshops, we were imbued with a sense of pride and satisfaction as we watched attendees leave with crucial knowledge to make the most out of their vacations. We are also immensely grateful to our partners and presenters for their collective efforts and contributions to make these workshops an overall success!

rom the arrival of His Excellency, Mr Miguel Angel Navarro Portera, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain to the Lion Dance and Flamenco Dance performances, the 48th edition of the Natas travel fair marked 2016 with its long-awaited return with a grand entrance into the travel scene in Singapore. Held from 4th to 6th March 2016 at the Singapore EXPO, NATAS focused all its resources to provide individuals visiting the exhibitions with a holistic and fruitful travel fair experience. As noted by President of NATAS, Mr Devinder Ohri in his welcome address, “NATAS 2016 has assembled close to 60 exhibitors comprising of travel agents and tour operators; airlines and cruise lines;

hotels and resorts and food vendors; … to cater to this insatiable appetite for travel that Singaporeans have”. Those who attended the fair were offered a wide selection of travel choices – whether opting for a traditional tour package or a customised itinerary – there was something for everyone. Exhibitors such as Ergo:Travel and GuteReise! (Germany and More!) were some of the agents present who offered information to travellers interested in group tours, as well as to the more intrepid who wish to explore the country of their choosing independently. Nepal Tourism Board was one of the National Tourism Organisations at the fair - their presence a testament to the fact that Nepal’s tourism sector is ready to bounce back from the

tragedy that struck them almost a year ago. If the prospect of exploring uncharted territories was not enough to entice visitors to book their holidays, NATAS also invited various food vendors to be part of the bazaar, giving attendees a taste of the country’s cuisine. Throughout the course of the fair, stage performances such as Nepalese and Indonesian cultural dance, and even Chinese steel pen calligraphy was demonstrated to engage and entertain spectators. The lineup also provided an opportunity for would-be travellers to get a taste and peek into the diverse cultures at the fair. Staying a step ahead and anticipating the needs of travellers, the organisers of NATAS once again put together a Doctor’s Talk, by Tan Tock Seng Hospital, to touch on travel

related vaccinations and health matters, which are often overlooked during the frenzy and buzz of planning a trip. MACAO, THE ORIENTAL GEM OF ASIA Get ready for Macao’s glamour and charms. This once Portuguese empire is now very commonly known to the world as the ‘Las Vegas of Macao’. Despite the modern and glitzy exteriors, the country’s colonial influences from the 16th century coupled with its current political climate emanates through Macao’s architecture, food, and culture. Popular places of interest include the Ruins of St. Paul’s and the Senado Square. The former is considered to be one of Macao’s greatest cathedrals. Destroyed by a fire, the remaining ruins showcase an extremely regal and impressive structure. The UNESCO World

Heritage site is also considered to be one of Macao’s landmarks. A little walk away is Senado Square - the iconic cobblestoned streets and the unmistakably European infrastructure around the square has always been a lovely reminder of Macao’s unique dual identity. You will also find stores selling an array of goods such as antiques as well as restaurants and little shops selling knick-knacks for you to munch on while you shop. Be sure to visit one of Macao’s oldest temples, the A-Ma Temple, which is said to have existed even before the city of Macao came into being. The country ‘s name was

derived from the Chinese words ‘A-MaGau’ which means ‘Bay of A-ma’, where the temple is located. The Taipa Houses-Museum is another set of charming Portuguese-styled buildings one should visit during their time in Macao. For a grand view of Macao, get yourself to the observation deck of and revolving restaurant of the Macao Tower Convention and Entertainment Centre. If you’re in for a little more adventure and adrenaline-inducing thrills, partake in activities such as bungee-jumping and skyjumping from the top of the tower! If you would like a little more glamour and
