Holi (Festival of Colours) INDIA

The annual Holi festival in India commemorates the triumph of good versus evil, as unwavering devotion to the Hindu god Lord Vishnu brought about the defeat of the demoness Holika. Celebrations usually take place on the day after the last full moon of the lunar month, but the traditional rituals are carried out on the eve of Holi, where people walk around a large bonfire three times, breaking out in song and dance to mark the occasion. The morning of Holi commences with a rainbow of colour, as celebrants throw or smear vibrantly-coloured powder and water at each other to welcome the season of spring. Holi festivities take place more commonly in the northern part of India, with Goa and the cities of Mathura and Mumbai having some of the biggest and wildest Holi celebrations.

Omizutori (Water-Drawing Festival) JAPAN

A long-standing traditional event for more than 1,000 years, this annual Buddhist festival in Nara, Japan welcomes the season of spring with a series of repentance rituals and ceremonies at the Todaiji Temple. One of the most popular and spectacular ceremonies during this two-week festival is the Otaimatsu, where large pine torches are lit after sunset and held over the crowd at Nigatsudo Hall. Try not to shy away from these sparks; as it is believed that getting showered with these embers will protect you from evil. The highlight of the Omizutori, the actual water-drawing event, is performed on the early morning of March 13, where priests head to the well located at the base of the temple building to draw water, which is said to have restorative abilities. http://www.jnto.go.jp/eng/

The picturesque scenery can be seen for miles, and after each gentle bend in the road your decision to selfdrive around this immense country would feel like the best decision you have made in your entire life. With the help of navigational devices such as, GPS, the prospect of independent travel has not only become more tempting, but has also risen in popularity as self-drive packages and tours are becoming more preferable amongst travellers in the past few years. Being a self-drive destination, New Zealand has made tremendous efforts to encourage safe driving as well as to raise awareness about driving rules. These efforts are further bolstered by providing

travellers with driving itineraries that cover various sites of New Zealand in days or even close to a month, depending on the duration of their visit. The freedom and flexibility one experiences when embarking on these tours is unparalleled, and it imbues one with confidence to tour a foreign land independently. The terrain in New Zealand is diverse, ranging from rugged plains to vast flat grasslands, and if you would like to experience the entirety of this magnificent country on a relatively faster pace, do consider renting a car to save time, and to enjoy the surreal surroundings from the comforts of your vehicle. Depending on what piques your interest, New Zealand offers different perspectives of what the country consists of. Major areas of the country have their own charms and popular attractions that draw people from both near and afar.

An Adventure to the North Island

There are various locations in the North Island of New Zealand that have noteworthy highlights, accessible via The Thermal Explorer Highway - an impressive route in and of itself. One such place is Rotorua, a geothermal city known for its geysers and thermal mud pools. Visitors can gaze the Pohutu geyser, in the Te Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley, erupting scalding water 30 metres into the air up to 20 times throughout the day. The town is steeped in Maori culture, and holds cultural performances that are as entrancing as the thermal landscape itself.

Continue down the route to Lake Taupo, which houses the famous Huka Falls, as well as the 10-meter high Maori rock craving at Mine Bay. The rock craving has become a prominent cultural site, and can only be reached by boat. In addition, wary travellers can make their way to the Tokaanu Thermal Pools, in Lake Taupo, to rejuvenate themselves after a long journey. Drivers have a choice between taking The Pacific Coast Highway or the Twin Discovery Tour Route to return back to Auckland. The Pacific Coast will provide spectacular views of the coastlines that stretches as far as the horizon, whereby the Twin Discovery Tour

The quaint port town provides ferry service between the North and South Islands of New Zealand. Cruise along Queen Charlotte Drive that links the twisty roads of Picton and Havelock. Once reaching Havelock, drivers should set some time aside to make stopovers at spots marked with the sign, “lookout”, and indulge in the captivating sights in the vicinity. This is especially true when looking out from Cullens Point, relish

On the other hand, if you would like to cross the rugged terrains of New Zealand’s South Island, the Southern Scenic Heritage Highway route will plunge you into the world loved and adored by fans of the novel-based fantasy film series, The Lord of the Rings. OKINAWA’S TOP SIX

Rediscover the hidden beauty of Okinawa through the eyes of the locals

SHURI-JO CASTLE

Marine Activities & Marine Life Observation

For the thrill seekers, get ready for hours of fun in Okinawa’s emerald green clear waters. It is one of the best places in the world to explore marine sports such as diving, jet-skiing, and even fly-boarding! If you want to experience Okinawa’s underwater beauty without getting wet, visit the famous Churaumi Aquarium. For those who want to get a little more up close and personal, take a ride on the glass-bottomed boat or explore the sea through the Busena Marine Observatory Tower.

Makishi Public Market & ‘Minyou’ Folk Song Restaurants

Taste the flavours of Okinawa at the Makishi Public Market – an indoor market selling everything from raw seafood to quirky souvenirs. Take your pick from the freshest catch of the day, and get it prepared in one of the restaurants for 500 yen. At night, head to the local izakaya where you can enjoy performances of sanshin (a three-stringed instrument) and taiko (drums) and traditional folk music. This is a great place to mingle with the locals over some good music and excellent Okinawan cuisine.

Bingata Painting

Okinawa has adopted an experiential method to introduce its culture. At Shuri Ryusen, you can create your very own Bingata souvenir. Bingata is a dyeing technique unique to Okinawa, which creates intricate patterns and a cacophony of colours on fabrics and clothes. Here you can witness the various stages of Bingata production and get in on the action at the same time.

Shuri-jo Castle

For history buffs, be sure to visit Okinawa’s Shuri castle (Shuri-jo) , which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was restored in 1992 after being destroyed in the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. Symbolising the splendour of the Ryukyu Kingdom, its Chinese and Japanese influences can be seen in its architecture and design.

CELEBRATING THE DIVERSITY OF INDIA

India is a country steeped in cultural and traditional festivals, thanks to its diverse castes, cultures, and religions. The following are some of the major festivities to be a part of or to witness: HOLI (23rd March 2016)

Holi, arguably one of the more well-known fiestas internationally, is the festival of colours (also known as the festival of love). Celebrating the arrival of spring, the value of forgiveness, and healing broken relationships, it is a time for individuals to throw caution to the wind and indulge in frivolous merry-making. This is done primarily through playfully smearing coloured powder and water on family, friends, and strangers in the streets, accompanied by singing and dancing. The festival date varies every year, as per the Hindu calendar, and is typically celebrated in March.

VALLAM KALI (SNAKE BOAT RACE)/ ONAM (13 September, 2016):

Vallam Kali is a traditional boat race in Kerala, India. A form of canoe racing, it is mainly conducted during the season of the harvest festival called Onam in autumn. Vallam Kali includes races of many kinds of paddled longboats - the traditional boats of Kerala. The race of Chundan Vallam (snake boat) is the major event. Hence Vallam Kali is also known as the Snake Boat Race and is a major tourist attraction.

FESTIVAL PROCESSION

grounds, proving to be quite the visual feast. The state government has accorded the status of ‘international festival’ to Kullu Dussehra, which attracts over 400,000 attendees – locals and tourists alike – annually.

CHHATH PUJA (6th Nov, 2016)

DEVOTEES AT KULLU DUSSEHRA

LADAKH FESTIVAL (18th-25th September 2016)

Ladakh festival takes place in second last week of September every year in Leh, a town in the Himalayas. It showcases Ladakh’s culture, traditions, and heritage. The ceremony takes place in Leh, with a large procession of various cultural troupes from different parts of Ladakh. The festival lasts for 15 days with a regular program conducted in different villages. Partake in one of the many programs which include archery, polo, and mask dances from the monasteries, concerts, and traditional dances organised by the various troupes from villages.

Chhath Puja (also called Dala Chhath) is a Hindu festival popular in the Northern and Eastern Indian states. It is typically celebrated six days after Deepavali, the festival of lights. Chhath is mainly characterised by riverside rituals in which the Sun God is worshipped. Devotees believe that the Sun God bestows all blessings in life upon them; so in return, they offer up special prayers and carry out specific rituals both at dawn and at dusk. The morning ‘arghya’ is a prayer for a good harvest, peace and prosperity while the evening ‘arghya’ is an expression of thanks to the benevolence of the Sun God for all that he has granted during the year. It is quite a marvellous sight to witness and experience, as throngs of people in multi-coloured traditional wear, gather just before sunrise and sunset, to offer up prayers and offerings.

PUSHKAR FAIR (8-12 November, 2016)

Pushkar is one of the world’s largest camel fairs, taking place at the banks of the Pushkar Lake. Quirky competitions such

PUSHKAR FAIR

as the “longest moustache” and “bridal competition” are some of the main attractions for this fair. In recent years the fair has also included a cricket match, in which tourists are welcome to participate. A camel race signals the start of the festival, and is accompanied by music, songs and exhibitions. Pushkar Camel Fair is one of India’s most highly-rated travel experiences, attracting more than 11,000 camels, horses and cattle and visited by over 400,000 people over a period of fourteen days. For visitors, it’s a once-in-alifetime opportunity to be part of and witness the grandeur and charm of one of the last great traditional village fairs, which brings livestock, farmers, traders and villagers from all over Rajasthan.

KULLU DUSSEHRA (11th October, 2016):

The festival of Kullu Dusshera originated from royal beginnings, and has evolved into a celebration of religion, culture, and community. Celebrated over a period of seven days in the panoramic Kullu Valley, it is considered to be one of the most sacred festivals in India. The highlights do not end with the grand processions. Stalls selling a myriad of wares and food vendors cooking up a storm line the festival

NEWFOUND MARVELS OF TAIWAN Exploring the natural wonders of Taiwan will open your eyes to a whole new perspective of this small island nation.

M

ost of us have heard about the delicious street food, the bustling night markets and the quirky themed restaurant concepts that Taiwan has to offer, and we often stick to such popular recommendations from friends, family and fellow travellers alike. Instead, consider throwing away all your preconceptions of Taiwan, and embrace all that nature has to offer; the lush mountains and hills, that fresh breath of air by the river – details that are right under your nose (and eyes) but often overlooked.

Hot Springs in Sanxia

A traditional, suburban district that exudes old tradition and culture, Sanxia is best known for its old street that recounts the area’s rich past as an influential productions base, as well as the impressive architecture of Qingshui Zushi Temple. However, unbeknown to most tourists, Sanxia also boasts of an all-natural hot springs area immersed within the forest. The Great Roots Forestry Spa Resort, which is named after an enormous century-old buttress tree, is a unique spa resort where you will find an assortment of outdoor hot springs surrounded by serene nature and picturesque mountain views. reward you with surprising marvels that may otherwise remain hidden to the average tourist. So, why not go off the beaten track (albeit literally) and opt for a leisurely afternoon of bike riding along the scenic routes of Taiwan? One interesting cycling path that you must not miss is the Dong Feng Bikeway, a 13-kilometre-long bicycle trail that was converted from old railway tracks in Houli. Visual treats along this path includes a breathtaking view overlooking the Shigang Dam and the surrounding lake, a Japanese-era rice-husking barn, and a magnificent Hakka Cultural Museum that was reconstructed from a traditional Hakka home. Head to the adjoining Houfeng Bikeway section to relish the unique experience of cycling through the covered No. 9 tunnel and make your way across Dajia River on a steel bridge built way back in 1908, before you backtrack back to Dong Feng Bikeway to get an up-close look at the Lover’s Bridge and an abandoned railway train.

Dakeng Leisure Farm

SUN MOON LAKE

Chickens pecking on the ground, greedy pigs snorting and rolling around in the mud and peacocks strutting along the lawn; these are the sights that greet you at the family-run Dakeng Leisure Farm. Originally started off as a native chicken farm, it was expanded to include a chicken restaurant after the second generation of the Tsai family took over, before it was converted into the current eco-friendly leisure farm that it is today. Built on the slopes of Dakeng Mountain, the spacious compound

offers accommodation in the form of upscale villas, forest huts and Japanese style-dormitories, all simply outfitted with beautiful wooden furnishings. Try your hand at bamboo weaving or the traditional way of making glutinous rice cake, or hike up to the hilltop viewing tower for a spectacular view of the landscape, before making your way down the hill via the single-rope footbridge or a thrilling ride on the sky slider. Indulge in a mouth-watering, home-cooked meal specially whipped up by the Tsai family members themselves, or unwind at the Boat House bar with a cocktail mix prepared by one of the three daughters.

Releasing Sky Lanterns at Pingxi

A popular activity to do in Taiwan that has become somewhat of a tradition for both tourists and locals alike, is the releasing of sky lanterns. Blessings and wishes are written on large paper lanterns before they are lit up and released into the skies, an action that symbolizes the sending of your wishes to God (or one’s ancestors in heaven). If you happen to be in the right place at the right time, you may even get to catch the annual Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival, where thousands of people gather to release their lanterns simultaneously, resulting in a stunning sight of countless lanterns illuminating the night sky. TRAVEL ESSENTIAL

LOST PASSPORT WOES BE GONE

We take you through what you need to do in the event where you lose your passport in a foreign country

Y

ou finally arrive at your dream destination, and you spend a lazy afternoon wandering along the charming streets of Italy, camera shutter clicking all the way as you marvel at the amazing sights that surround you. A floaty tourmaline dress draped on the mannequin catches your roving eye as you peek into the window of a snazzy little boutique, and you decide to indulge in some spontaneity and purchase that little number. Just as you are making payment, you dig into your bag for your passport to get your VAT refund, but it is nowhere to be found. An hour of futile searching and backtracking turns up nothing, and you begin to feel panic rising in your throat. Losing something as important as your passport in the midst of your trip overseas can be a mind-scrambling experience, throwing a wrench into all your travel plans in a single instant. However, knowing what to do would go a long way towards keeping your head in such a situation, and even minimising the disruption to your itinerary.

SINGAPOREAN HONORARY CONSULATE

Before you go

As the old adage goes, it is always better to be safe than sorry. Before you fly, preparing these documents and bringing them along on your travels would work wonders during such circumstances. Firstly, make a copy of your identity card and your passport, whether it may be in the form of an actual photocopy or a photo taken using your phone. If you are travelling with family or friends, you may consider preparing the respective documents on their behalf or suggest that they do the same as well. Bear in mind to keep the copies of these documents with you at all times, and make sure you do not keep them in your wallet or even with your passport, as it would defeat their purpose if you lose them along with your passport. Bringing along two passport-sized photographs of yourself – and urging your travel companions to do the same – would also come in handy in the situation where you need to obtain replacement travel documents. Another point of advice is that you should also check beforehand and find out where the embassy is located in your travel destination/s, including important details such as its operating hours and non-working days, so that you know where and when you need to go. This is especially important, as the destination/s that you are headed to may not have a Singapore overseas mission based there, which means that the nearest embassy may be located in another part of the country. These information can all be found on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) website, or you can contact them via phone or email should you require more assistance.

The final preparation step, which is also one of the most essential, is to get yourself insured for your vacation. What you need to look into are the different types and various degrees of coverage each policy offers before deciding on one that suits your needs best, taking into consideration the destination of travel as well. For instance, you should look out for policies that provide better coverage and higher payout limits for the loss of personal property or belongings if you are travelling to cities where purse-snatching and pickpocketing are rampant.

What to do when you lose your passport

Once you have realised that you have indeed lost your passport (and not simply misplaced it somewhere), you should head to the closest police station to make a police report. Request a printed copy of the report or any acknowledgement document with the report number along with the name and location of the police station. You will need this report to procure your replacement travel documents as well as make a successful claim on your travel insurance for the cost of replacing your passport. The following few steps are where all your preparation before the trip would prove useful, saving you some time and effort in the process. First, you need to contact the nearest Singapore Mission and make an appointment to replace your passport. Make sure to prepare all the necessary documents before making your way down to the embassy, such as a copy of your police report, your proof of identity and two passport photos. If you did not prepare suitable photographs

ASSISTANCE FROM THE TOUR MANAGER

in advance, you may want to ask for directions to an ID photo booth where you can get your photo taken. These computer-operated booths can usually be found in underground subway or metro stations, but do take note that not all stations have them. Next, report the loss to the Singapore overseas mission and present the relevant supporting documents. You will need to pay an admin fee before you receive a Document of Identity, which will fill in as your temporary passport to facilitate your return to Singapore. Following your arrival back in Singapore, you would need to apply for a replacement passport in person at the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority within 14 days of the loss. PRAGUE CASTLE

REVISIT A CAPITAL FROZEN IN TIME

Embodying the rich history of Europe in every shape, form and space imaginable, Prague, capital of the Czech Republic, bares its ageless beauty to travelers near and far.

T

he soft sound of your footfalls bounce off the walls and echo through the baroque halls. At any moment you expect to hear someone shushing you, but as you stop in your tracks, the monastic library settles back into its nonchalant silence, just then the tour guide whispers something into your ear, while pointing to the arched ceiling above you. Your eyes settle on the designs etched into the high ceiling, serving as a framework for the equally awe-inspiring paintings that captures the artistic styles of the 17th and 18th century. Here in the Strahov Monastery, the largest monastic library in Prague, the past remains sheltered from the flow of time. Prague, the capital and largest city situated in the Czech Republic, is wellknown for its historic landmarks, and architecture embellished with intricate artworks. Listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city prides itself in the preservation of ancient structures imprinted in time, prominent religious, and cultural places of interest. Prague earned

its nickname, “the City of a Hundred Spires”, as most of the buildings were built with an acutely pointed pyramidal roof, erected at the very top of the building.

Sedlec Ossuary/ Church of Bones

If you have a deep appreciation for all kinds of architecture, even ones that conjure a grim and dark atmosphere, then the Sedlec Ossuary is a must visit on anyone’s list. Dubbed the Church of Bones, this Roman Catholic chapel built beneath the Cemetery Church of All Saints, incorporates more than 40,000 skeletons to serve as furnitures and decorations. Despite its eccentricity, the Ossuary draws over 200,000 people annually. Not sparing any part of the human skeleton, almost every corner is occupied with skulls and bones meant to adorn the walls of the interior, this includes an enormous skeletal chandelier that hangs from the ceiling of the chapel. In the late 1800s, a woodcarver was assigned with the task of organising the bones such that it amplified the unconventional charm of the oratory.

27 | Travel Journal | Issue 05 | March 2016 St Vitus Cathedral

After taking almost six centuries and several builders to aid the completion of its construction, the St Vitus Cathedral rules the skyline of Prague with an imposing presence that makes an impression on even the most seasoned traveler. The Cathedral’s grandeur befits royalty, to the extent of kings, queens and even patron saints to be placed in the royal mausoleum, located in front of the high altar, as their final resting place. In stark contrast to its ghastly and foreboding exterior of the St Vitusguarded by Gargoyles, the interior exhibits depictions of saints, angels and the like, on the stain glass windows in a vibrant choreography of colours stretching across the large panels. In addition, the Cathedral also boasts a collection of valuable antiquities, such as, the 14th-century of the Last Judgement above the Golden Gate, the baroque silver tomb of St John of Nepomuck and the ornate Chapel of St Wenceslas amongst others. The biggest bell in the republic is held in the Great South Tower of the Cathedral, the 287 steps are well worth the climb for visitors looking to capture a panoramic view of the entire metropolis. Although admission is free for the first part of the premises, a ticket is required to explore the rest.

Prague Castle

Once the residence of Czech royalty, emperors and presidents for thousands of years, the Prague Castle stands regally above the Vltava’s, the longest river within the Czech Republic, left bank. The massive complex is home to the dominant St. Vitus Cathedral, a towering Gothic masterpiece, and reverent spiritual symbol of the Czech state. The compound also comprises of several museums, art galleries, viewing towers and other spots to pique the curiosity and interest of the public.

THE VLTAVA RIVER AND VYSEHRAD

Old Town Square

Said to be the heart of the capital, the Old Town Square is where you’ll discover the soul of Prague permeating through the buildings, churches and numerous multicoloured houses in the surrounding area. The winding lanes run through the quaint town and spill out onto the Old Town Hall, where the distinct astronomical clock resides. Dating back to the 12th century, structures adopting the Romanesque, Baroque, and Gothic architectural style were constructed to magnify the charm of the square. Each addition to the square came with stories of wealthy merchants and underhanded political dealings, thus breathing life into the stoic frameworks. Several cafes are lined along the square, giving patrons the chance to relax and to fully immerse themselves in the sights, sounds and atmosphere of the square.

ASTRONOMICAL CLOCK

Astronomical Clock

OLD TOWN SQUARE

The medieval astronomical clock mounted on the southern wall of the Old Town Hall, is the oldest clock in the world that is still in operation to this day. Filled with fascinating symbolism, the clock demonstrates a tangible display of time in the form of moving figures, and rotating zodiacal rings. Crowds gather beneath the attraction to catch a glimpse of the Clock in action. When the clock strikes the hour, the figures break their statuesque demeanour and move in a clockwork precision to delight onlookers to a 45-second mechanical performance. The performance ends when the huge bell positioned at the top of the tower is rung. The four figures were specifically chosen to represent the worries that befuddled 15thcentury Praguers.

CHARLES BRIDGE

Charles Bridge

Linking the two sides of Prague, namely Old Town and the Lesser Town/ Prague castle, the Charles Bridge remains as one of Prague’s timeless treasures. The 14th century stone bridge is ornamented with 75 Baroque statues, and provides an expansive view of the surrounding vicinity as you stroll along

the old cobblestone path. Emanating a majestic demeanour by day, and casting a romantic ambience by night, the Charles bridge has long since been the muse of artists, poets and musicians.
