Borneo Jazz Festival MALAYSIA

Into its 11th year, the noteworthy Borneo Jazz festival returns to once again entertain audiences with its soothing jazz music. Featuring musicians from the region and all across the globe, the 2-day event held in Miri, Sarawak, will include performances by Raw Earth, a Blues, Rock & Soul band consisting of Singapore’s best, including Danny Loong and Francis Chan (from the critically acclaimed Ublues), Victor Chen (winner of Strip Acoustic at Wala Wala), Surath Godfrey and Hanrong (Rock outfit Reverie). The band has played in major festivals, such as Beerfest Asia and opened shows for music legends such as Bob Dylan. Aoi Matsuri JAPAN

Another revered festival that holds a deep cultural significance is the humble Aoi Matsuri that takes place in Kyoto, the former capital of Japan. Dating back to the 7th century, it is one of the oldest and most famous compared to the other ceremonial processions such as the Gion Matsuri and the Jidai Matsuri. The main highlight is the parade, whereby over 500 people adorning accessories and clothing from the Heian Period (794-1185) make their way from the Imperial Palace to the Kamo Shrines. Although the exact beginnings of the Aoi Matsuri is uncertain, it is believed that this tradition is practiced to this day to pacify the deities of the Kamo Shrines. http://www.jnto.org.sg

Bun Bang Fai Rocket Festival THAILAND

What better way to appease the gods then with a rocket festival? In the Yasothon province, located in the northeast of Thailand, the locals hold a deep-rooted traditional belief that launching rockets into the sky will bring rain to their crops. Adopting the literal meaning to the idiom, “the sky’s the limit”, each rocket is set-off with the intention of gaining more height than the previous launch. The home-made rockets measure up to nine metres in length and hold an estimated 20 to 25 kilograms of gunpowder. It is accompanied with folk music, street performances, and other community-driven activities to keep spectators entertained and engaged throughout the entire proceedings. http://www.tourismthailand.org

The Cheung Chau Bun Festival will probably be the quirkiest cultural celebration you have ever heard of. In the quaint island of Cheung Chau, the annual event dedicated to the god, Pak Tai, is commemorated with week-long celebrations, including the Piu Sik (Floating Colours) parade, and the popular Bun Scrambling Competition. As the main highlight of this event, the Bun Scrambling Competition requires contestants to climb a 60ft steel tower to gather as many “lucky” imitation buns as possible before the time runs out. The massive bi-annual MATTA Travel Fair hits the capital of Malaysia and receives an overwhelming turnout.

he Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) Fair roared into action on Friday, the 11th of March to dole out yet another round of extravagant travel deals and promotions to domestic, regional, as well as international destinations. The three-day affair took place at Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and attracted over 100,000 visitors. It was evident from the massive turn out that the bleak economic outlook was no deterrent to the locals’ penchant for travel. Eager travellers jostled through the crowds to make their way to the various booths that offered deals that were too good to resist. Families with young children found great

bargains at the booths of Angry Bird Activity Park, Sunway Lagoon, Legoland Malaysia Resort and other attractions. With life-sized mascots roaming the crowded walkways, and booths designed to look like mini-theme parks, the fair did a fantastic job at enticing parents and engaging young children. There were plenty of opportunities for the adults to have fun as well; Korea Tourism Organisation had tons of activities lined up throughout the day – you could spin the ‘Wheel of K-Luck’ to win some goodies, enjoy a K-Pop dance performance, or pick up some Korean beauty tips from the make up demonstrations. Taiwan Tourism also staged a great number of performances and food tastings at regular intervals to tantalise

attendees with a taste of Taiwan. Patrons of the Japan National Tourism Organisation were treated to Geisha appearances and were given a photo opportunity with these traditional female entertainers. South Australia Tourism managed to get visitors as close as possible to destinations such as Kangaroo Island and Eyre Peninsula with their Virtual Reality cameras; these ‘goggles’ provided wearers with an opportunity to catch a glimpse of Australia’s epic sceneries. Dana Urmonas, Regional Director of South Australia Tourism for Southeast Asia and India said, “MATTA provided us with an excellent opportunity to reach out to potential travellers planning to

go to Adelaide & South Australia, and acted as a platform to showcase all that our beautiful state has to offer. We were kept busy for all three days, answering queries from people. In this current economic climate, it was good to be there and to see so many people planning for their next holiday!”. The throngs of people lining up at almost every booth, enquiring about travel deals and booking holidays, was a testament to the success of the fair. It goes without saying that travellers are bound to be excited for the next MATTA Fair, which will take place from the 2nd to the 4th of September 2016. Mark your calendars, folks!

REDISCOVERING THE UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE CITY OF MELAKA

Cruise along the Melaka river and revisit the city’s most popular attractions.

Melaka River, Malaysia

he Melaka River boat cruise has become a major tourist destination over the years. With the help of the Melaka State Government the river was cleaned up and subsequently given a new lease of life. Known as the ‘Venice of the East’, the Melaka River used to be a busy port and a meeting point for traders from the East and the West. The diverse architectural style and cultural influences of the 16th century can still be found along its narrow banks. There are a lot of historical buildings and monuments in the vicinity, including old mosques, temples, and churches, as well as traditional villages that were built on the banks a long time ago. There are two types of guided cruises available, they can be taken from either the Quayside Heritage Centre or Taman Rempah. The 45-minute boat trip will take passengers to popular places in the city.

Kampung Morten

Kampung Morten is a traditional Malay village that is well worth the visit when taking the cruise tour. The living museum has been showcasing Malay heritage for more than a hundred years. The architecture and interior of the house, heavily influenced by traditional Malay decor, consists of embroidered tiles, brick staircases, and wood carvings. There are several private museums that provide more information on Malay culture, these places are accessible to the public. One of the most popular private museums in Kampung Morten is Villa Sentosa. Guided tours will be conducted by residents, and precious artifacts, including a century-old copy of Quran and an original certificate issued by King George V will be showcased.

Middleburg

After Melaka fell to the Dutch in 1641, the city’s walls were fortified as a preventive measure to ensure the city’s safety. The building of a bastion known as Middleburg is situated on the bank of Melaka River. The control tower was built in an attempt to further strengthen the city’s defences. This new bastion regulated the area around Melaka River, which at that time was bustling with shipping and trading activity. The existing defence system with the new bastion provided cannon support to the Dutch military. Strategically located at the mouth of Melaka River, the focal point for trade and stopover for international trading ships, the tower played a crucial role in detecting and overcoming external threats.

The Melaka Pirate Park has also risen in popularity over the years, housing the well-known Eye on Melaka -a giant, slow moving Ferris wheel, and other piratethemed activities, this has become a mustvisit on the itineraries of many travellers. The park may also provide interesting entertainment, such as live magic performances, fire shows and many more. Latest additions to this theme park include a pirate ship and a bungee trampoline. Visitors looking for an adrenalin-pumping activity can conquer the rock climbing wall that stands prominently near the Ferris wheel.
