After being well-received in 2007 - when it first launched - the World DJ Festival grew to become one of the biggest outdoor music festivals in Asia. The yearly event features acts by various international and local artists over the weekend. Taking place in the second weekend in May, the lovely spring weather offers a perfect ambience to lose yourself to the heavy drops of the electronic dance music. In addition to immersing yourself to the fist-pumping sounds, you could take a break by participating in some games or grabbing a bite or two at the festival.

Set amidst the scenic vista of fully bloomed cherry blossoms, the antique floats of the Inuyama Festival captivate both locals and visitors from all over the world. The annual festival was initially held at the Haritsuna Shrine in 1635, before becoming officially known as the Inuyama Festival. The two-day parade features impressive views of 13 three-layered, 25-feet tall floats with 365 Japanese lanterns attached to them. All 13 floats have been recognised as Aichi (a Japanese prefecture in the central Honshu Island) prefectural tangible folk assets. One unique addition that accompanies these amazing floats are the Karakuri mechanical puppets, which are situated at the top of each structure.

Over the span of five days, the Byron Bay Bluesfest will showcase over 200 performances, on up to seven stages. Taking place at the Tyagarah Tea Tree Farm, the festival’s international line-up will include the biggest names in the music industry. Iconic musicians such as Bob Dylan, John Legend, and Joss Stone will be taking to the stage to enthrall audiences. First launched in 1990, with a modest turnout of 6,000, the Byron Bay Bluesfest has grown to attract 100,000 blues fan. Besides entertaining audiences with soul-stirring performances, the event also promotes and highlights Byron Bay and its culture.

Score Run 2017 MALAYSIA, Kuala Lumpur Conquer the bustling city as you run under the watchful gaze of towering skyscrapers and renowned hotel chains. Anticipated to be one of the biggest running events of the year, the marathon is expected to draw an estimated 12,000 runners. Score Run seeks to inculcate the sport of running as an enjoyable habit amongst people of all ages. There are three race categories - 6km, 12km, and 21km - available for participants. BHUTAN, A LAND STEEPED IN MYSTICISM Tucked away in the Himalayas, this Buddhist kingdom enthralls visitors with its history and culture.

hen one thinks of Bhutan, the immediate image that pops into the head, is a mystical land with places of worship perched precariously on the side of a cliff. Bhutan impresses travellers with its monasteries, fortresses (or dzongs) and dramatic landscapes that stretch as far as the eye can see. This Buddhist kingdom is situated on the eastern edge of the Himalayas, wedged between Indian Ladakh and the Tibetan Plateau. It is known for housing several of the most revered Buddhist sites in the Himalayas. Besides serving as the spiritual centre of the region, this destination captivates travellers with many of its historical and cultural highlights. Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, is the perfect example of a city that encapsulates the soul of Bhutan while maintaining an image that is synonymous with a bustling city. It fascinates its visitors with its almost seamless combination of modernity and antiquity. Restaurants, internet cafes, nightclubs and shopping centres can be found here. Even if you’re strapped for cash, ATM banking facilities can be found at convenient locations throughout the capital. such attraction. If you have some time to spare, drop by the National Folk Heritage Museum and learn about Bhutan’s past through its exhibitions, demonstrations, and artifacts. The building’s facade resembles that of a traditional farmhouse or a rural home, and features three stories of art, culture, and relics. The Tashichho Dzong is another notable must-see sight. Build in 1216 A.D., this Buddhist monastery and fortress has been the seat of the government since 1952. Today, it houses the throne room and the offices of the King, the secretariat, and the ministries of home affairs and finance. An interesting fact about this structure, is that it reflects a distinctive Bhutanese architecture, and was built in a traditional style without the use of nails or written plans for aid. Others places of interest such as the Memorial Chorten, the Buddha Dordenma Statue, the Changangkha Temple and the Craft Bazaar, a marketplace that sells and promotes

traditional arts and crafts, it’s perfect for those looking for some authentic Bhutanese souvenirs to bring back home. The Punakha district or Punakha Dzongkhag, served as Bhutan’s capital from 1637 to 1907. Situated just a few hours from Thimphu, Punakha enchants travellers with its picturesque landscapes and serene atmosphere. The region is renowned for housing the Punakha Dzong, a regal and imposing dzong that is believed to be the most beautiful in the country. Set amidst the lush green valleys, this impressive dzong has hosted the coronation of all of Bhutan’s kings. It is also notable for keeping the preserved remains of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, a Tibetan Buddhist lama and the unifier of Bhutan as a nation-state. Paro, a town in Bhutan is another place one can stop by after exploring Thimphu and the Punakha district. The charming region offers amazing sights of fertile rice fields and a scenic vista of the pristine river winding through the historic town.

Taktsang Monastery, which is also known as the Tiger’s Nest. The tourist attraction is positioned on the side of the upper Paro valley, Bhutan. Standing 3120 meters above the sea level, the temple complex is a cultural icon of Bhutan, and is comprised of four main temples and several dwellings. Besides its golden roofs, the complex has an equally stunning interior comprised of a gold-plated dome and golden idols. NATAS TRAVEL FAIR 2017

Record-breaking attendance at NATAS’ Golden Jubilee Fair!

he National Association of Travel Agents Singapore (NATAS) Fair ran the 50th edition of the fair from the 17th to 19th of February at Singapore EXPO Halls 7 and 8. The fair, which was celebrating its golden jubilee, has come a long way from its inception in 1987. Admission to the fair, has been free since 2015 but this time round, the fair drew a grand total of 110, 901 visitors – almost double the amount from the figures of the previous fairs. The bi-annual consumer fair offered irresistible travel deals and packages. Travel agents, national tourism organisations, and various travel-related service providers were present to entice the public with holidays to places near and far. The opening ceremony of the fair was graced by His Excellency, Mr Marc Abensour, Ambassador of the Republic of France in Singapore, and Mr Devinder Ohri, with an attendance of over 200 guests including dignitaries from embassies, the travel industry and airline partners. In his welcome address, Mr Abensour spoke of the measures that France has put in place to stand resilient on the tourism front despite recent security issues, highlighting the necessity for the travel industry to keep abreast of current world issues and adapt accordingly. On each day of the fair, the first 50 consumers who arrived at the fair were rewarded with goodie bags, each with $50 worth of goodies. Visitors could also enjoy a specially curated line-up of performances by entrancing belly dancers and other cultural dances; talks such as a Travel Photography Talk by Canon were held to provide useful tips to turn regular holiday photography into works of art. Those who made

purchases at the fair could take part in the Grand Draws and Daily Draws and stand a chance to win over 30 attractive prizes consisting of airline tickets, cruises, and land tours to popular destinations in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. The first prize of the Grand Draw was a pair of Business Class tickets sponsored by Singapore Airlines to the capital of Sweden, whilst the first prize of the Daily Draw was a 5D4N Penang & Phuket Cruise for two sponsored by Royal Caribbean Cruises Asia. Mr. Steven Ler, Deputy President of NATAS, said “Our survey results have revealed that the most sought-after destinations by consumers for this fair were Europe, South Korea, China and Japan. The theme of Travel 2017 was ‘See the World’, and aptly so, as Singaporeans have demonstrated a desire to visit new and upcoming places, with an increased demand for more exotic destinations such as the Maldives, Bhutan, Kazakhstan and Kenya” Tourism Authority of Thailand had a special dessert-making demonstration station at their booth. Visitors to the Thailand booth enjoyed a taste of Khanom and were treated to an authentic crepe-like sweet dessert fresh off the pan made by Khanom locals. At Tourism Indonesia’s booth, you could wash down that dessert with a piping hot cup of Balinese coffee or sit down and enjoy a massage by expert hands. Travel Agents offered a myriad of exotic and thrilling tour packages. New Shan Travel for instance, were offering opportunity to explore the magnificence of the ancient trading route – the Silk Road in China. Stamford Cruises were

UOB Travel offered deals such as ‘kids travel free’ promotions to selected destinations whilst H.I.S Travel unveiled innovative travel experiences such as their ‘& Tokyo’ series, which allowed for special thematic travels to other nearby destinations with the addition of exploring the well-loved city of Tokyo. “We are absolutely overwhelmed by the phenomenal support we have received from the travelling public. This historic figure on the cusp of our Golden Jubilee celebration is a testament to the confidence Singaporeans have in the NATAS brand,” said Mr Devinder Ohri, President of NATAS. “Significant to NATAS is not only the historical milestone achieved, nor the outstanding attendance or the business transacted during the fair. Equally significant for us, and the industry is the return and therefore the reunification of close to 90 per cent of our Outbound Tours community as one big happy family. s the largest country in the world, Russia has long emanated an imposing global presence with its size and political influence. Besides being known for covering a large geographic area, the nation has roots tracing back to the Middle Ages. The country is home to an eclectic mix of ethnicities, attractions and highlights. Moscow

The bustling capital of Russia is home to famous Bolshoi Theatre and the iconic Kremlin. The broad avenues are perfect for taking a slow stroll and admiring the surroundings. This small settlement, which was founded in 1661, was renowned as a gold and fur trade centre. However, from the start of the 19th century, the region became renowned for housing men involved in the Decembrist Revolt. By the end of the 19th century, it was estimated that about 30% of the population consisted of the Decembrist, which is believed to be one of the reasons why Irkutsk became the cultural and educational center of Serbia. Most of the city’s historical monuments dating back to the late 19th to 20th centuries can be found on the main streets - on Karl Marx and Lenin. The region also has a museum dedicated to the Decembrists, which is comprised of two memorial manors - Trubetskoy Manor and Volkonsky Manor. Both buildings contain items from the Decembrists and their family members. The Volkonsky Manor has interiors that were recreated to showcase traditions and the life of the prince and Decembrist, Count Sergei Volkonsky. A ferry ride from Irkutsk will take passengers to the spectacular Olkhon Island. Situated on the middle of a lake, this island captivates travellers with its placid, turquoise blue waters and its most popular site, Shaman Rock.

Listvyanka

The compact village of Listvyanka is one of the oldest settlements on Lake Baikal, a freshwater reserve. The town also provides easy and fast access to the picturesque lake. There are a number of places visitors can explore to get a deeper understanding of Listvyanka. Some of these places are the orthodox wooden church of Saint-Nicolas and the small market, where the local babushkas sell smoked fish from the lake and some locally produced handicrafts. In addition to the captivating scenery, Listvyanka also accommodates the Baikal Ecology Museum, where visitors can learn about the stunning fauna and flora that populate the unique Baikal ecosystem. geyser that can sprout water up to seventy feet high every few minutes! At the end of the day, you get to head to the Old Reykjavik Harbour to get on board the Ocean Diamond which will ferry you to the beautiful town of Stykkisholmur.

Stykkisholmur

Located on the Snaefellnes Peninsula in the west of Iceland, the town of Stykkisholmur, is an untouched beauty. Its inhabitants pride themselves for being an extremely environmentally conscious community. The area is home to Breidafjördur Bay and Snaefellsjoskull glacier – which sits at the top of a 700,000-year old dormant volcano.

Isafjördur/ Siglufjördur

Isafjördur is the largest town in the Westfjords region and hosts some of Iceland’s biggest festivals. The secluded peninsula is connected to the Icelandic mainland by a narrow strip of land. Take in the jaw-dropping sights of dramatic fjords carved by ancient glaciers and table mountains that plunge into the sea.

After heading to the largest town in the Westjfords region, visit the small town of Siglufjördur - an idyllic little paradise for those seeking adventure in the wild. Be it revving through the snow on a snowmobile or hiking through the valleys, the recreational possibilities here are endless. Your tour will include a visit to the Herring Era Museum, where you will learn more about Iceland’s herring industry which played a significant role in Iceland’s economy in the 20th century.

Akureyri /Husavik/Seydisfjördur

The cruise adventure will continue on to Akureyri, Iceland’s second largest city. Here, the gorgeous region of Lake Myvatn awaits! The area is best known for its cacophony of sights – from lush pastures on one side to lava fields on the other. You will then head to the whale watching capital of Iceland. Husavik’s waters are home to 15 different whale species, dolphins and approximately 30 types of birds! You have the option to watch these graceful sea giants in their Arctic habitat by adding on optional whale-watching tours. Alternatively, you could get on a super jeep and traverse through the road less travelled. The area is also well-known

for its geothermal springs, so you could sit back and relax at one of the many heated local pools. Continue on to Seydisfjördur, a friendly town of just 700 people. Djupivogur

Djupivogur is a fishing village in south-east Iceland, and the starting point for an optional excursion to Vatnajokill glacier. You can choose to embark on an adventurous super jeep tour, which includes a challenging two-hour hike and lunch for fuel! Vestmannaeyjar

Your cruise will leave you on the archipelago of Vestmannaeyjar, which is located off Iceland’s south coast, a standalone island off the mainland. You will head to the island of Heimaey, the only inhabited island, where the eerie remains of half-buried houses can still be seen from a violent eruption in 1973. Named after the mythical bird, the Phoenix Ancient Town or better known as Fenghuang County takes travellers back to much simpler times. Nestled in the west of the Hunan Province, Zhangjiajie is home to the captivating Wulingyuan, a scenic and historic interest area. The site is somewhat reminiscent of the fictional landscape seen in the 2009 American epic science fiction film, Avatar. Besides accommodating a flourishing habitat consisting of forests, rivers, waterfalls, and natural land bridges, Wulingyuan is also filled with jagged quartzite sandstone columns, many of which are over 200m tall. Travellers can make their way via cable car to the northern part of Wulingyuan, and explore the picturesque landscape of the Emperor Mountain or more commonly known as Tianzi Mountain. Situated at 1,182 meters, this mountain peak offers a breathtaking views of the vast landscape. The sight becomes even more spectacular when there is cloud cover the sea of clouds that carpet the peaks can usually be seen during spring or early autumn. Brave souls can also venture across the formidable Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge, the world’s longest and highest glass bridge. The glass-bottomed bridge provides a terrifying, yet an impressive panoramic view of the stunning Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon.

netherworld. There are three major tests the deceased must face before reaching their destination. These tests are taken at three specific locations, these are the Nothing-To-BeDone-Bridge, the Ghost Torturing Pass and the Tianzi (Son of Heaven) Palace.

Chongqing is China’s fourth city after Beijing, Shanghai, and Tianjin. The bustling metropolis is situated on the upper reaches of the Yangtze, at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers. The region shares its borders with the provinces of Hubei, Hunan, Guizhou, Sichuan, and Shaanxi. The port city is also known as the “Mountain City”. TRAVEL REVOLUTION FAIR 2017 BACK WITH A BANG!

rom the 24th to the 27th of February, consumers packed the halls of Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Halls A and B, searching for the best travel deals. There was a steady stream of visitors over the course of the three days of the Travel Revolution Fair. From Chan Brothers Travel to Tourism New Zealand, the booths of travel agents and national tourism organisations alike were abuzz with activity. Nam Ho Travel, for instance, set up a little booth at the front of their counter to make Spring Onion Taiwanese Pancakes fresh off the stove! A popcorn machine and a photo booth with two different backdrops (you could pick the mystical Northern Lights or the enchanting fall season in Korea) that came with matching costumes such as winter coats and the Korean Hanbok, truly added to the ‘fun

fair’ experience of the event. A new feature of the fair, called the ‘Wanderlust Market’ was a line-up of pop-up stalls selling everything from handmade jewellery from France to artisanal leather bags, cultural artefacts, and whimsical dreamcatchers. Other exhibitors, such as Avis Car Rental – had fun road safety games lined up which allowed participants to win goodies such as a useful RFID card case. As an associated media of the fair, Travel Journal was also at the fair to provide travel fair goers with the opportunity to win hotel stays and redeem goodie bags with freebies such as pens, notebooks, luggage tags, brochures and vouchers for tours by various travel agents. The Travel Journal booth also had an impressive backdrop of a snow-capped mountain in India, proudly sponsored by India Tourism Board, which served as a

photo booth for visitors to the booth to take quirky photos. TRF also organised a series of free travel talks for consumers who were interested in exploring exotic destinations in Africa and learning more about the natural phenomenon, the Northern Lights.
